Crafting a Personal Memory System: Terri’s Vision for 2020
Hi there, everyone! It’s Terri, and I’m delighted to connect with you from The Gypsy Magpie. Today, I’m absolutely thrilled to share a very special junk journal project that I meticulously created for The Graphics Fairy. This endeavor was brought to life using an array of exquisite vintage images thoughtfully curated from the Premium Member site, specifically with the upcoming year in mind. My primary goal was to design a beautiful, yet functional, space where I could diligently gather and document some of my most cherished memories throughout 2020. This wasn’t just about creating a pretty book; it was about establishing a truly successful system that would make the process of collecting photos, jotting down notes, and tucking away small pieces of meaningful ephemera both effortless and enjoyable.
I had to be incredibly honest with myself about my time commitments. I knew, unequivocally, that if the process of assembling and organizing my monthly memories took more than an hour or two at the end of each month, the project, no matter how well-intentioned, would simply never come to fruition. This realization drove me to innovate and streamline, ensuring the entire experience remained manageable and, most importantly, sustainable. After much contemplation and experimentation, I believe I’ve developed a method and a journal structure that perfectly fills that bill, offering a delightful way to preserve precious moments without feeling overwhelmed. It’s truly a testament to mindful memory keeping and accessible DIY junk journal crafting.
The Foundation: Materials and a Stunning Cover Design
The core of this entire Memory Album Junk Journal project was remarkably assembled primarily from a single, versatile bundle found on The Graphics Fairy Premium Member site: the invaluable Antique Album Pages collection. This foundational bundle provided a cohesive aesthetic and a wealth of elements that truly brought the journal to life. The physical structure of the album is a high-quality chipboard book from Prima, specifically from their “Hardware Memories” line by Frank Garcia. I’ve had the pleasure of working with these robust books before – they are available in a variety of sizes – and each time, I am consistently impressed with the exceptional results they yield. Their pages are crafted from a very rigid hardboard, making them an ideal canvas for diverse mixed media techniques, capable of withstanding various artistic applications without warping or buckling. What truly sets these books apart for junk journaling enthusiasts is their thoughtful design: a generous ¼” space is built between each page. This crucial feature is designed to comfortably accommodate thicker embellishments, collected ephemera, and dimensional elements that would typically prevent a standard book from closing properly, ensuring your finished album remains beautifully intact.
To begin the aesthetic transformation, I carefully painted the edges of each page and the spine with a smooth, antique white chalk paint. This not only provided a soft, vintage base but also offered a protective layer. While the paint dried, my search for the perfect cover image led me to the Vintage Postcard bundle on the Premium Member site, where I discovered an ideal postcard image. This beautiful image was then printed, precisely trimmed to size, and artfully adhered to the outside cover using a durable collage medium, creating a captivating focal point. For the inside covers, I selected elegant vintage sheet music, which added another layer of nostalgic charm and textural interest. Once the covers were fully dry, I found that a simple yet elegant ribbon and a few carefully chosen die-cut numbers were all the embellishment needed to achieve the refined, understated look I envisioned. One detail that particularly excites me is the personalization of the cover: placing my family name and address directly onto the giant postcard image, truly using it in the spirit of its original intention, transforms this DIY memory keepsake into a deeply personal heirloom.
Innovative Pockets for Collecting Treasures
Throughout the carefully constructed pages of this Memory Album Junk Journal, I have thoughtfully integrated a series of functional and visually appealing pockets. These pockets are absolutely essential for organizing and securely holding the various keepsakes, photographs, and notes that will accumulate over the year. Each pocket was creatively fashioned from an assortment of beautiful printable envelopes, all sourced directly from the incredibly diverse collections available on The Graphics Fairy Premium Site. My choices included selections from the Collaged Ephemera, Angelic Envelopes, and Nostalgic Christmas bundles, alongside a couple of designs from different CD cover printables, ensuring a rich variety of styles and patterns.
To add a unique numerical element to some of the pockets, I also pulled a tag featuring the numeral ‘1’ from the versatile Antique Ephemera bundle. Instead of simply folding the envelopes as they were originally designed, I approached their use with a more customized vision. I selected them primarily for their exquisite design elements and then carefully cut out the main panel to serve as the decorative front of each pocket. To ensure a neat and robust construction, I utilized a score board to create precise ½” creases along both sides and the bottom edge of each panel. This technique allowed for easy and secure adhesion to the journal pages. Furthermore, a strategically placed circle punch was used to create a gentle notch at the top center of each pocket, a small but significant detail that facilitates easier removal of items tucked inside. These beautifully crafted pockets are perfectly sized to hold tiny journals, small bundles of cherished photos, special notes, or any other precious bits of ephemera that will become part of the year’s story, making this a truly practical and elegant scrapbook alternative.
Designing the Monthly Pages: Simplicity and Vintage Elegance
The design for the individual monthly pages within this Memory Album Junk Journal adheres to a wonderfully basic yet elegant aesthetic, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal. Each sturdy chipboard page is covered with a neutral-toned paper, providing a calming and consistent backdrop that allows the memories and embellishments to truly shine. Central to each monthly spread is a carefully constructed pocket, accentuated with a charming photo frame. These elements are further embellished with a selection of delicate trims and a soft chenille stem, adding textural interest and a touch of vintage whimsy to each page, perfectly aligning with the overall vintage junk journal style.
For the captivating photo frames featured on these pages, I turned to the extraordinary Antique Album Pages bundle, a true treasure trove of design elements. Oh, what a wealth of goodness awaits within that bundle for any paper crafting enthusiast! It is absolutely brimming with an array of stunning floral frames, each imbued with a delicate, timeless beauty, as well as several versatile basic photo mats that have become indispensable staples in my own junk journaling practice. These frames are what I affectionately refer to as “perfect chameleons” because of their incredible adaptability. They seamlessly allow me to dress them up in myriad ways – whether it’s through the intricate detail of fussy cut images, the artistic touch of stamped designs, or layered with other ephemera. I find myself constantly reaching for them, confident that they will perfectly complement any theme or aesthetic I’m pursuing. Their versatility even extends to color alteration; I often give them a very sheer “wash” of acrylic paint or gesso. This gentle application allows me to subtly adjust their hue to harmonize with a specific color palette without losing the underlying vintage charm, making them ideal for truly personalized DIY memory albums.
Taking an artistic detour from the conventional, instead of filling each beautiful floral frame with an actual photograph, I made the deliberate choice to slip delicate pieces of vintage sheet music behind them. This decision added an unexpected layer of texture and an ethereal, nostalgic quality to each monthly page. Over these charming sheet music backdrops, I then layered a subtle metal frame, accentuating it with a series of small stickers clearly denoting each month. This combination creates a unique visual interest that invites closer inspection without the immediate demand of a personal photo. Once these embellished photo frames were complete, they were securely attached to a simple, custom-sized card stock pocket that I specifically created to fit each page perfectly. This clever integration ensures that the monthly theme is clearly presented, while the underlying pocket remains ready to receive the precious mementos and memories destined for that particular month in this truly functional and beautiful vintage-style memory journal.
Flexible Memory Storage and the Goal of Simplicity
As I continue to develop this Memory Album Junk Journal, I remain somewhat uncertain about the optimal contents for each monthly pocket. Initially, I considered slipping a small ‘journal-style’ bundle of pages into each, offering ample space for detailed reflections. However, a significant concern arose regarding potential bulk. I worry that incorporating too many bundled pages might eventually make the album prohibitively thick, making it difficult to close properly and diminishing its overall aesthetic and functionality. Maintaining the integrity and ease of use of the album is paramount to its long-term success as a memory keeping tool.
Therefore, I am currently leaning towards a more streamlined approach: utilizing individual envelopes for each month. This allows for a flexible and contained way to collect photos, small snippets of notes, ticket stubs, or other mementos without adding excessive volume directly to the page. Perhaps I’ll also tuck in a little decorative tag or a vintage trading card to add a touch of charm and categorize the contents. My overarching goal for this entire project is to meticulously keep it SIMPLE. This conscious decision is driven by the desire to ensure I am highly likely to maintain current progress with it throughout the year. By keeping the process straightforward and achievable, I can confidently anticipate having a truly lovely, comprehensive, and cherished completed memento at the end of next year, a tangible record of precious memories preserved within this beautiful DIY keepsake album.
Beyond 2020: Future Inspirations for Your Junk Journals
This particular style of Memory Album Junk Journal has captivated my creative imagination, and I’m already certain I’ll be crafting many more variations in the future. The possibilities for adapting this structured yet flexible format are truly endless! Imagine, for instance, transforming this concept into a beautiful perpetual birthday book. With each passing year, you could add new pages, photographs, and notes to celebrate loved ones, creating a living archive of joy and milestones. Or consider a heartfelt book of gratitude, a dedicated space filled with the special things your family celebrates each year at Thanksgiving – right down to the cherished recipes that make it uniquely yours. This would become a truly invaluable family heirloom, rich with culinary and emotional memories.
I’m also pretty sure I’d love to apply this same thoughtful approach to document our beloved trips to the wine country, adventures we frequently share with dear friends. A dedicated album would allow us to add a new page or two whenever that special weekend pops up, capturing the essence of each journey. I can vividly envision tucking in beautifully designed labels from our favorite vineyards, detailed tasting notes from memorable pairings, along with vibrant photos of picturesque landscapes, and even business cards from charming restaurants or other unique places we visit. The beauty of this format means we could even include cherished menus from our picnics amidst the vineyards! The creative wheels are definitely turning in my brain, buzzing with excitement for all the diverse stories these adaptable junk journals can tell, each one a testament to the power of thoughtful memory keeping and the endless versatility of vintage paper crafts.
