Dream Big, Dance On: Creating a DIY Ballet Barre and Secure Mirror Installation for a Ballerina’s Room
Are you ready to transform a simple bedroom into a magical space where dreams take flight? Join us as we craft a enchanting ballet-themed room for our little Livie Bug, complete with a sturdy DIY ballet barre and a beautifully hung, heavy mirror. While some might shy away from endless shades of pink, I’m having an absolute blast bringing this vision to life! Who knows, maybe Livie will rebel against pink in her teens, only to rediscover her love for it when she has a daughter of her own – just like I did!
Regardless of future color preferences, my inner child is absolutely green with envy over Livie’s newest bedroom addition: a custom-built ballet barre paired with a grand, elegant mirror. This project, while seemingly straightforward, presented a common home improvement hurdle: securely hanging a significantly heavy mirror when a wall stud isn’t perfectly centered where you need it. But fear not, we’ve cracked the code to ensure both beauty and rock-solid safety.

Supplies for Securely Hanging a Heavy Mirror:
- 18″ Hangman hanging system: This heavy-duty system is a game-changer for large, weighty items, allowing for secure installation even between studs.
- Large mirror: Our mirror measures 35″x45″, a perfect size for dance practice. If you’re looking for a similar piece, this one is a great option, combining size and style.
- Power drill: An indispensable tool for any DIY enthusiast. We rely on this versatile model for countless projects around the house.
- Level: Crucial for ensuring your mirror and barre are perfectly straight and aesthetically pleasing.
- Stud finder: Essential for locating wall studs, which are vital for a secure installation, especially with heavy items.
Supplies for Building Your DIY Ballet Barre:
- 2″ wooden dowel: Select a length appropriate for your space. We found this size to be perfect for both grip and stability.
- 2 stairway handrail brackets: These robust brackets are designed to support weight and make excellent, cost-effective ballet barre supports.
- Wood screws: For attaching the dowel to the brackets. Ensure they are long enough to provide a strong hold.
Conquering the Mirror Challenge: Safety First for Our Little Ballerina
This project began with a cherished family heirloom: a beautiful, scrolly mirror my parents gave me when I first moved into my college apartment. It had graced their dining room wall for most of my childhood. Originally black with delicate gold leafing, I gave it a fresh update with a dose of shimmering silver spray paint, transforming it to fit Livie’s new space. But let me tell you, this mirror is incredibly heavy.

Safety was paramount. I absolutely did not want to hang it within Olivia’s reach unless I was 100% confident it wouldn’t budge. We’ve previously used heavy-duty picture hanging systems called Hangmans for other substantial pieces, like our hallway chalkboard and the unique bathroom window decor, and they have proven incredibly strong and reliable. Knowing their superior strength, I knew this system was the perfect solution for mounting this massive mirror securely and safely in Livie’s room.
As with any exciting home project, Olivia, our energetic little helper, was eager to get involved, adding her unique brand of supervision to the process.
Step-by-Step: Secure Mirror Installation with Hangman System

1. Attaching the Mirror Plate: We began by carefully screwing one of the Hangman plates to the back, top edge of the mirror. Precision is key here; we used a level to ensure it was perfectly straight, as this will dictate how the mirror hangs on the wall.

2. Positioning the Wall Plate for Optimal Centering: The real magic of the Hangman system lies in its ability to securely mount heavy items where studs aren’t ideally located. We used a stud finder to identify the studs on the wall. Then, we positioned the second Hangman plate precisely where we wanted the mirror to be centered – right between two studs. This allowed us to align a screw hole on each end of the wall plate with a solid stud, ensuring maximum support. We marked the positions for drilling.

This ingenious method meant we didn’t have to compromise on placement. Without this hanging plate system, our only option would have been to hang the mirror directly onto a single stud, which would have left it visibly off-center on the wall. For someone with a keen eye for symmetry, that would have driven me absolutely crazy!

3. Interlocking for Unbeatable Security: The brilliance of the Hangman system lies in its design: the plate on the wall features an angled lip that securely cradles and holds the plate attached to the back of the mirror. This creates an incredibly strong, interlocking connection that distributes the weight evenly and prevents any slippage.

Once hung, that big, beautiful mirror is going absolutely nowhere! This mama wouldn’t have it any other way, especially with an active little one around.

And okay, come on. A moment like this absolutely called for a celebratory selfie! (Though, to be honest, selfie moments are a rare occurrence for me, this one felt earned).

Building the Dream: Crafting a DIY Ballet Barre on a Budget
With the mirror securely in place, it was time for the next exciting phase: constructing the ballet barre! (All inner ballerinas, rejoice!) Both Robert and I shared the same goal: to create a barre that was not only sturdy enough to handle a child’s weight and energetic practice sessions but also as inexpensive as possible – a guiding principle for many of our DIY endeavors.

Simple Materials, Strong Results:
Our choice of materials was simple yet effective: a 2-inch wooden dowel and a pair of robust stairway handrail brackets. These items combined set us back a mere $16, proving that a functional and beautiful ballet barre doesn’t have to break the bank. The wooden dowel provides a comfortable grip for little hands, while the handrail brackets are designed for structural support, making them perfect for this application.

Installation: Precision and Teamwork
1. Strategic Placement: Since we had meticulously centered the mirror between two wall studs, we were able to strategically position the ballet barre brackets at the same distance from the mirror, ensuring they also screwed directly into studs. This alignment provides maximum stability and support for the barre, crucial for any active use.

When determining the height for your ballet barre, a general rule of thumb is to have it reach just above the dancer’s elbow when their arm is relaxed by their side. This ensures comfort and proper posture during practice.

2. Pre-Drilling the Dowel: To prevent the wooden dowel from splitting and to ensure a clean, secure attachment, Robert carefully pre-drilled holes in the dowel. This step is essential for strong, lasting construction. Of course, Olivia was right there, offering her expert supervision, making sure every measurement and drill hole was just right.

3. Final Assembly and a Helping Hand: Attaching the dowel to the brackets required a bit of finesse and teamwork. Luckily, Robert’s sister, Ann, was visiting us over the weekend and graciously lent a helping hand. We sometimes put our guests to work – it’s a bad habit, I know! But she was a wonderful sport, and her extra set of hands made the final assembly much smoother.

Just so you know, this is our secret method for breaking up the tension during intense DIY projects. A little humor, a funny face, and we’re back in action:

Alright, but seriously… let’s do this!

The Grand Reveal: A Ballerina’s Dream Come True!
And there it is! Livie’s very own ballet barre, perfectly positioned for graceful pliés, powerful grande battements, delicate arabesques en pointe, and any other intricate ballet term she can imagine. It’s ready to support her budding talents and endless hours of creative movement.
This brings back a funny memory with my dad. When I was younger and deep into ballet, he used to tease me that “yoplait” was a dance move. My pre-teen self would roll her eyes and retort, “That’s yogurt, Dad!” The memory still makes me smile.

Wouldn’t you agree that this truly sets the ballet theme in motion for the room? While I’m not typically one for overly “theme-y” rooms, I love how this design subtly incorporates Livie’s passion into a functional and beautiful space. Just look at how adorable that ballerina appliqué pillow is over there – it adds such a sweet, personalized touch without overwhelming the aesthetic.

This DIY barre is remarkably similar to the one I used during my own ballet training at a dance studio as a girl. Those memories are so vivid! To this day, if I hear “Nutcracker” music playing during Christmas at the mall, I’m torn between running screaming (thanks to countless hours of rehearsal, 4-5 months every single year!) or spontaneously breaking into my old choreography. It’s a powerful trigger!

I think it’s safe to say that Olivia is definitely a fan of her new dance corner. Her excitement is palpable!

Now, it’s time to teach her a thing or two about formal ballet. Though, I must admit, this girl already has some impressive dance moves of her own – she’s a natural!

Once the mirror was secure and the barre was up, we couldn’t resist. We kicked off an impromptu dance party right there in her room, grooving for a good hour. While “Swan Lake” is undoubtedly classic and beautiful, “Uptown Funk” was definitely on repeat for this celebratory dance session!
