This exquisite, vintage-style junk journal measures approximately 8 3/8 inches by 6 inches, making it a substantial yet portable companion for any garden enthusiast. Its sturdy 2-inch wide spine gracefully binds together 180 unique page sides, thoughtfully organized into five distinct signatures. This robust construction ensures ample space for a gardener to document, plan, and store precious memories and vital information.
The Genesis of a Garden Journal: Inspiration Blooms
The journey to create this “Seed Sower’s Companion” began last year during a serendipitous stroll through a friend’s enchanting garden. Amidst the vibrant tapestry of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, carefully arranged along picturesque paths, a powerful inspiration took root in Valerie’s mind. Although she humbly admits not being a seasoned gardener herself, the mental imagery of a dream journal for a passionate gardener started to “germinate” – a delightful pun intended, hinting at the natural progression of her creative ideas. Valerie envisioned a dedicated space: a haven for jotting down planting schedules, mapping out garden layouts, and even securely storing beloved seed packets for immediate access. It was to be a tangible reflection of what a gardener imagines, transforming dreams into documented reality.
Fast forward to a crisp winter day, Valerie stumbled upon a true treasure at a thrift store: a copy of “In and Out of the Garden” by Sara Midda, a book she had long cherished. While she already owned a pristine copy, which she could never bring herself to dismantle for crafting, finding a second, thrifted copy for a mere pittance felt like destiny. This fortuitous find provided the perfect foundation. The book’s cover, beautifully foxed and aged over the years, along with several of its interior pages, became the structural and aesthetic cornerstone, allowing her “Seed Sower’s Companion” to truly begin taking shape.
Curating the Companion: A Symphony of Vintage Elements
With a clear vision in mind, Valerie embarked on the exciting process of material selection. She leveraged the incredible resources of The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site, typing “seed” and “garden” into the search bar. This simple action unleashed a “plethora of amazing imagery” – vintage illustrations, botanical prints, and charming ephemera that practically begged to be printed and incorporated. Complementing these digital treasures, Valerie delved into her personal stash of usable bits, unearthing antique photographs, aged invoices, authentic receipts, and a variety of vintage ephemera, including genuine seed packets and delicate trade cards. These paper elements were harmoniously blended with tactile textiles, intriguing metal bits, and even a shimmering shard of mica. It was this meticulous combination of disparate materials that finally brought the journal from Valerie’s imagination into vibrant, three-dimensional reality. Despite her rigorous editing process, striving to keep only the absolute essentials, the abundant beauty and charm of her chosen elements meant her “Seed Sower’s Companion” delightfuly ended up with a full, expressive “gator-mouth” – a testament to its rich and overflowing character.
Crafting the Cover: A Tapestry of History and Art
The journal’s cover was expertly constructed using the original book boards from the thrifted Sara Midda book, providing a sense of history and permanence. Valerie then meticulously crafted a 2-inch wide spine, adorning it with a gorgeous William Morris printed fabric, specifically the iconic “Strawberry Thief” pattern, which perfectly evokes a garden aesthetic. To further enhance its charm, she added a strip of ribbon, carefully saved from a gift basket, along with a delicate piece of vintage trim, artfully repurposed for the headbands. To protect a tiny, precious front picture, Valerie thoughtfully added a square of mica, framing the piece with decorative washi tape. A vintage button, whose aged patina beautifully matched the foxed book boards, served as a functional and aesthetic anchor for the tie closure, made from ink-stained ribbon. Finally, decorative metal protectors were strategically placed on the four exposed corners, not only adding a touch of elegance but also safeguarding the journal against wear. Valerie’s overarching aim was to lovingly preserve and enhance the cover’s inherent beauty – its naturally foxed texture and the endearing little watercolor picture of a tiny person perched atop a colossal potato, a truly whimsical touch.
A Detailed Look Inside: Pages of Delight and Practicality
Venturing into the journal’s inviting interior, the inside of the front cover reveals a vibrant green leaf endpaper, upon which Valerie expertly applied a salvaged antique die-cut of luscious strawberries, immediately setting a natural, refreshing tone. Over this, she intricately sewed a belly-band crafted from various vintage trims, designed to securely hold a charming little notebook. This miniature ledger features serene blue paper and a rich marbled endpaper print, offering a quaint space for quick notes. Valerie adorned this notebook with a picture of a seed envelope, carefully harvested from another book, and accented it with a small, characterful label. The page is further enriched by two additional labels: one digitally printed for crispness, and the other hand-stamped on stained paper, adding a touch of rustic authenticity.
To the right, this spread showcases one of the ten original vintage book pages Valerie chose as an anchor throughout the journal, lending an immediate sense of history and depth. To this page, she added a delicately torn piece of pink endpaper, providing a soft, decorative support. A tiny paperclip, chosen for its subtle charm, securely fastens a captivating picture of a flower advertisement, meticulously cut from a book, transforming it into a delightful journaling card, perfect for jotting down garden thoughts or observations.
On the left side of this captivating spread, Valerie ingeniously combined a delicate forget-me-not parchment print with a sumptuous pink-gold flower endpaper to form the foundation of the page. Enhancing its functionality and aesthetic, she added a distinctive tab sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s “Cultivating Beauty” journal tabs and stickers printable bundle. A petite paperclip thoughtfully holds an antique photograph alongside a charming page from a vintage flower book, creating a layered effect that invites contemplation. To the right, a striking seed catalog cover, beautifully printed on translucent vellum, creates an ethereal and visually stunning page that hints at the promise of spring.
This spread exemplifies Valerie’s clever use of texture and dimension. The left side features a page constructed from commercially printed cardstock, bolstered by charming torn paper washi tape for added visual interest and structural support. A delicate belly-band, fashioned from a soft pink endpaper, provides a secure spot for ephemera. Upon this band, Valerie collaged a tiny, torn fragment of a meadow endpaper alongside a hand-stamped number, adding subtle detail. Another tab from the versatile “Cultivating Beauty” journal tabs and stickers printable bundle graces the page edge, and the entire composition is meticulously machine-stitched around its perimeter. Two additional cards are thoughtfully slipped in, offering generous extra space for journaling or sketching garden ideas. On the right, a vintage seed catalog price list, printed on elegant linen paper with beautifully inked edges, offers both historical charm and potential inspiration for future plantings.
Turning to this engaging spread, the left page features a beautiful sweet pea cover print, artfully rendered on stained paper with meticulously inked edges, giving it an authentic, aged appearance that highlights its botanical elegance. The right page presents a fascinating piece of history: an authentic seed store invoice dating back to 1902. Valerie cleverly folded this historical document to create a pocket, perfectly sized to hold two delightful journal cards. These cards, harvested from an old book and thoughtfully backed with stained paper, provide additional space for a gardener’s reflections or notes, blending functionality with cherished vintage appeal.
On the left, a wonderfully coffee-stained page serves as the backdrop for a meticulously crafted pocket. This pocket, made from an inked and sewn endpaper print, is generously filled with a collection of charming ephemera: a journaling card created from a flower advertisement cut from a book, a printed seed envelope from Valerie’s personal stash, and a carefully constructed envelope from The Graphics Fairy’s “Cultivating Beauty” bundle. The front of the pocket is elegantly adorned with a printed label, adding a final touch of sophistication. To the right, Valerie has ingeniously sewn a vintage postcard directly onto the page, transforming it into a versatile tuck spot. This spot perfectly holds a substantial botanical journal card, salvaged from an old book page, providing ample space for detailed notes or illustrations related to plant care or garden planning.
The left side of this elegant spread immediately captivates with a beautiful tattered rose wallpaper print, rendered on luxurious linen paper with delicately inked edges. This single page, with its romantic and distressed aesthetic, stands alone as a truly pretty and evocative element. On the right, Valerie skillfully combined commercially printed cardstock with a charming pocket, sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s “Pink and Green Ephemera” bundle. The front of this pocket is tastefully finished with a serene blue label, providing a gentle contrast. The entire perimeter of the pocket is machine-stitched, highlighting Valerie’s attention to detail and craftsmanship, and it is thoughtfully filled with an array of delightful vintage ephemera, waiting to be discovered.
The Heart of the Journal: Central Spreads and Thoughtful Bookmarks
At the very center of the journal, Valerie has fashioned a stunning spread featuring two functional pocket pages. These were ingeniously created by combining a coffee-stained book page, adorned with a lovely garden illustration, with complementary cardstock scrapbook paper. The perimeter of these pocket pages is meticulously machine-stitched, enhancing their durability and aesthetic appeal. Each pocket is thoughtfully filled with charming envelopes, crafted from The Graphics Fairy’s versatile printables, offering discreet storage for notes, sketches, or tiny keepsakes. Complementing this central spread is a unique bookmark, a true gem within the journal. One side of the bookmark utilizes the original vintage spine from Valerie’s thrifted book, preserving a piece of its history. The other side features a printable spine proudly proclaiming “my own garden,” carefully aged with a touch of ink to blend seamlessly with the journal’s vintage aesthetic. An eyelet adds a refined touch, and the bookmark is elegantly finished with stained seam-binding, making it both beautiful and practical for marking important pages in a gardener’s journey.
On the left, a delightful pink and green wallpaper print, rendered on textured linen paper, forms a charming and visually appealing page, bringing a touch of vintage elegance to the journal. The right side of this spread reveals a wonderfully interactive flip-out page, a testament to Valerie’s creative ingenuity. This dynamic page was constructed by combining two distinct floral papers, and within it, Valerie created two functional pockets using two different endpaper prints. These pockets are treasure troves, holding an authentic receipt for garden seeds from 1844 – a truly historical document – alongside a charming lettuce seed packet and another versatile seed envelope printable. A tiny, decorative label is added to the front, enhancing its appeal. To the top of this inventive page, Valerie included yet another tab from the ever-useful “Cultivating Beauty” journaling tabs and stickers printable bundle. Both the flip-out page and its integrated pockets are meticulously machine-stitched, ensuring their durability and showcasing Valerie’s commitment to quality craftsmanship.
The left side of this final page spread is a beautiful composition featuring a striking foxglove print, harmoniously layered with torn and ink-stained pieces of complementary floral prints. A carefully punched tab from a blue endpaper adds a subtle pop of color and functionality, and the entire arrangement is brought together with meticulous machine stitching, adding texture and a handcrafted feel. The right side of the spread showcases a uniquely constructed die-cut multi-level pocket, expertly fashioned from sturdy scrapbook cardstock. This intricate pocket is both visually appealing and highly functional. A delightful round pink rose label serves as an elegant flip tab, adding an interactive element, and its edges are also machine-stitched for a polished finish. The pockets are thoughtfully filled with a charming Petunia seed envelope, handmade by Valerie herself from her extensive collection, offering a personal touch and a perfect spot for storing garden seeds or related ephemera.
