Hello everyone, I’m Jack Ravi, a passionate collage and mixed media artist. From an early age, I’ve felt an undeniable and profound connection to the moon – her mystique, her ever-changing phases, and her calming presence in the night sky. This deep reverence inspired me to create a dedicated ‘shrine’ to Her, a personal sanctuary encapsulated within the pages of this little journal. The “Sister Moon Junk Journal” is precisely that – a heartfelt tribute, a miniature world brimming with lunar energy and vintage charm.
The Genesis of a Celestial Junk Journal: Inspiration and Unique Structure
My artistic journey for this piece began with an admiration for Jane Chipp’s adorable Concertina Prayer Journal, housed within a charming round tin, which she created for a craft tutorial on The Graphics Fairy Premium site. I was immediately drawn to its innovative structure and the delightful surprise of its compact form. Inspired by this, I wanted to explore and expand upon the concept of a journal contained within a round vessel, aiming to create something that not only holds memories but also gracefully celebrates the spherical beauty of the moon.
My tiny, yet incredibly intricate, junk journal nestles perfectly within its own round box, echoing the moon’s iconic shape. Breaking away from traditional rectangular pages, I designed all the journal’s pages to be circular, each one a little world in itself. These circular elements are ingeniously attached to a continuous string, allowing the journal to unfold and reveal its treasures in a dynamic, interactive, and multifaceted way. This structure invites you to explore every angle, every detail, making the act of discovery an integral part of the experience. The lid itself holds a special secret: I transformed it into a charming little shaker, featuring a captivating vintage image of the Three Women Stars, beautifully accented with shimmering silver stars, adding an element of playful magic right from the outset.
Crafting with Vintage Treasures: Pages and Ephemera
To infuse the journal with a sense of history and nostalgia, I meticulously selected a variety of authentic vintage ephemera and exquisite endpapers from The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection. These materials formed the foundation for several small, individual circular journals, which I then machine stitched with precision. These mini-journals are not only decorative but also serve as ideal spots for deeper reflection, intimate journaling, or attaching small mementos. Beyond these designated areas, most of the circular pages offer ample space, inviting the owner to write, draw, or simply adorn them with their own personal touches, making each page a unique canvas for self-expression and creative exploration.
Innovative Design: Integrating Non-Circular Elements
While the circular theme is central to the “Sister Moon” journal, I also wanted to introduce a dynamic element with non-circular pages, adding visual interest and unexpected pockets of discovery. The challenge was to integrate these rectangular sheets seamlessly into the predominantly round structure. My solution involved developing a clever folding mechanism that allows these pages to open up and expand, revealing hidden layers and ample writing space. Yet, when folded back, they cunningly “disappear” within the circular confines of the journal, maintaining its harmonious, moon-like aesthetic. This design choice adds a delightful element of surprise and further enhances the interactive nature of the journal, making each turn of the page a miniature reveal.
Adding Dimension: Thoughtful Embellishments and Details
To further enrich the tactile and visual experience of the journal, I incorporated a pair of small, thoughtfully placed buttons that add a subtle yet significant dimension. The first button is strategically located on the very first page, serving a practical purpose: it allows for effortless retrieval of the journal from its protective tin, ensuring ease of access. The second button, a truly exquisite detail, is crafted from luminous mother of pearl. Positioned within a captivating nightscape image, this button beautifully mimics the serene glow of a full moon, reflecting its light and mystery, and enhancing the journal’s celestial theme with an elegant touch of nature’s artistry.
Hidden Treasures: Pockets, Tags, and Tassels
No junk journal would be complete without a myriad of delightful nooks and crannies to discover. I meticulously crafted several small pockets, each designed to hold a unique secret. Within these charming enclosures, you’ll find an original vintage photograph, a tangible piece of history that sparks imagination. Another pocket reveals a bespoke tag, ingeniously created from a vintage playing card and adorned with a delicate chain, adding an unexpected touch of elegance. And for a final flourish, a miniature tassel dangles gracefully, incorporating a tiny piece of jewellery and soft embroidery floss, adding texture, movement, and an artisan touch to the overall composition. These thoughtful additions transform the journal into a multi-sensory experience, inviting exploration and interaction.
The Mystical Essence: Lining and Lunar Charging
Even the interior of the round tin received careful attention to detail. The bottom is lined with a specially selected image, which I painstakingly aged using a combination of tea stains and rust. This process imparted a wonderfully distressed, antique appearance, creating a rich, earthy contrast to the celestial theme of the journal. This unique background not only enhances the aesthetic but also adds another layer of vintage charm and depth to the entire piece. Furthermore, in a nod to its namesake and the moon’s powerful energies, this entire journal was intentionally ‘charged’ under the radiant glow of a full moon night. This ritualistic step imbues the “Sister Moon” journal with an extra layer of magic and intention, harnessing the potent energies of the moon at its peak, making it not just a beautiful craft, but a truly sacred object.
