Hello everyone! I’m Sharon Hoerth, and I make my home in the serene, rural landscapes of Wisconsin, USA. Living many miles from the hustle and bustle of a large city certainly encourages one to cultivate enriching hobbies! (Laughs.) Approximately two years ago, I serendipitously stumbled into the enchanting world of handmade journal-making, and it’s safe to say, I’ve been utterly captivated ever since. My mind is constantly abuzz with ideas, perpetually dreaming up the next journal I will bring to life.

For my inaugural Design Team Project for The Graphics Fairy, I embarked on a creative adventure by repurposing an old book cover, transforming it into a unique journal centered around a pastoral landscape theme. My vision for this journal was to evoke a profound sense of exploration and discovery in anyone who flips through its pages. I want readers to feel as though they are on an unhurried adventure, traversing the picturesque countryside on foot, with delightful surprises awaiting them around every corner, much like finding a hidden gem in a forgotten path.

The journey of creating this journal began with the beautiful Delft Blue Ephemera Bundle, which served as my initial inspiration and a vibrant jumping-off point for the color palette and overall aesthetic. To perfectly complement these charming Delft Blue images, I extensively utilized the powerful search tool available on the Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. This allowed me to effortlessly discover a rich array of landscape and wallpaper images, which I then ingeniously employed as the foundational backgrounds for my journal pages, ensuring a cohesive and visually harmonious theme throughout the entire piece.

Crafting Cohesion: Pairing Landscapes with Vintage Wallpaper

One of my favorite techniques, and one that greatly contributes to the aesthetic flow of this journal, is the artful pairing of a captivating landscape image with a complementary wallpaper image within the same spread. This creates a visually rich and immersive experience for the viewer. To achieve a seamless sense of cohesiveness across these diverse elements, I meticulously incorporate similar textual or material components on both pages, such as a consistent fabric choice or a delicate piece of lace. This subtle repetition acts as an anchor, subtly guiding the eye and ensuring that each two-page spread feels like a unified, miniature work of art.

Authenticity Through Repurposing: Integrating Original Book Pages

When embarking on the wonderful journey of repurposing an old book, a crucial step for me is always to integrate some of the original book pages directly into the junk journal. This not only pays homage to the book’s history but also imbues the new creation with an undeniable sense of authenticity and a story that extends beyond the newly added elements. These vintage pages serve as fantastic foundational elements, blending effortlessly with high-quality printables from The Graphics Fairy and other vintage papers. I particularly enjoy the technique of printing new images directly onto these original book pages, as I did with the charming floral images featured in this journal. This layering technique creates a unique depth and a beautiful interplay between the old and the new, celebrating both the past and the present of the book’s life.

The Art of Coffee Dyeing and Lacy Details

Coffee-dyed papers are an indispensable element in crafting authentic junk journals, offering a timeless, aged aesthetic that perfectly complements vintage imagery. The process not only imbues the paper with beautiful, rustic tones ranging from light sepia to deep amber but also adds a subtle texture and a delightful, earthy aroma. My personal favorites are the papers I imprint with delicate lacy doilies, creating intricate patterns that mimic the charm of antique textiles. After the dyeing process, carefully fussy cutting around these lace imprints transforms a simple paper edge into a unique, decorative tuck spot, adding both beauty and functionality. To complete this elegant touch, delicate paper buttons are often added. While real buttons lend a tangible weight and charm, opting for paper buttons is a clever compromise to reduce bulk, ensuring the journal remains beautifully tactile without becoming overly cumbersome, a crucial consideration for a functional and enjoyable journal.

Adding Dimension with Stitching and Textiles

The judicious application of both machine stitching and the more meditative practice of slow stitching can elevate a junk journal from merely beautiful to truly extraordinary. A simple blanket stitch, for instance, when applied to almost any page, card, or tag, instantly adds a layer of handcrafted detail and visual interest, taking the piece to an entirely different level of artistry. For me, introducing diverse textures to the journal’s pages and various ephemera pieces is paramount. I consciously strive to achieve this tactile richness by thoughtfully incorporating various fabrics and laces. In this particular journal, I crafted charming page and tag tabs from several types of exquisite wool textiles, adding warmth and a rustic feel. Additionally, a small piece of authentic bark cloth was transformed into a unique pocket, demonstrating that even a little touch of texture can go a very long way in enhancing the overall sensory experience of the journal.

Unique Embellishments: The Velvet Bookmark and Versatile Envelopes

One of the most cherished elements within this Pastoral Landscape Junk Journal is the elegant velvet bookmark I meticulously crafted. This enchanting embossing technique, which I first encountered years ago demonstrated by the incomparable Martha Stewart, is surprisingly simple yet yields stunning results. All that’s required is a piece of velvet fabric, a rubber stamp with a design of your choice, and a warm iron. The key to achieving the most striking outcome is to select a simpler stamp image, as its clean lines will transfer with greater clarity and depth onto the velvet, creating a beautifully tactile and visually rich impression that adds a touch of luxury to the journal.

Adding a fun and functional element to the center of a signature, or any page for that matter, is the inclusion of an envelope. In this journal, I fashioned a charming envelope from a page extracted from an antique book, giving it a rich history. The flap of this envelope was then exquisitely embellished with a delicate metal filigree piece, adding a touch of vintage elegance. A clever trick I employ is to leave the sides of the envelope open until after the signatures have been securely sewn into the journal. Gluing the sides shut post-sewing neatly conceals the binding threads, presenting a much cleaner and more professional finish. Another innovative approach I love for creating “faux” envelopes involves using real wallpaper as the exterior. I adhere one or more pages for writing to the inside, but deliberately leave the sides open. This allows the entire piece to be unfolded and written upon freely. These faux envelopes are particularly effective as free-floating elements, which can be playfully clipped to various pages, providing abundant extra writing space without permanently altering the journal’s structure.

The Finishing Touches: Spine Fabric and Decorative Edges

For me, one of the most exciting and satisfying stages in the creation of any junk journal is the moment of deciding which fabric to use for the inside of the spine. This choice is pivotal, as the fabric offers a tantalizing glimpse of coordinating color and texture, peeking charmingly through the spaces between the signatures and the inside covers. It’s an opportunity to infuse the journal with another layer of personality and visual harmony. In this particular Pastoral Landscape journal, I opted for an additional elegant detail: punching a delicate scalloped edge on my inside cover sheets. This thoughtful design choice serves a dual purpose: it creates a much softer, more organic transition between the chosen fabric and the paper elements, enhancing the overall aesthetic flow and tactile experience of the journal.
