The Allure of the Paris Papillon: Sharon’s Creative Vision

Sharon’s vision for this journal was clear: a homage to vintage French aesthetics, imbued with a romantic and whimsical feel. The initial spark for this project came from discovering the Cream and Green kit within The Graphics Fairy’s premium membership bundles. Its elegant palette and classic designs provided the perfect foundation for a journal that would evoke the timeless beauty of old Paris.

Opting for a tall, thin junk journal style, Sharon began crafting the cover using a piece of upholstery fabric from an old swatch book. This choice instantly introduced a rich textural element, giving the journal a substantial and luxurious feel. The edges were expertly finished with pinking shears, adding a subtle decorative touch while preventing fraying. The journal’s signature (the collection of pages) was then sewn into the cover with a delicate cord, which Sharon embellished with luminous pearl beads. This small detail truly makes the cover pop, adding a touch of refined elegance that catches the eye.

Further enhancing the cover’s vintage charm are a classic cabinet card and a meticulously fussy-cut butterfly, both sourced from the versatile Cream and Green kit. These elements, combined with various layered textiles, create a multi-dimensional and inviting tactile experience, hinting at the treasures held within. The butterfly motif, a nod to the “Papillon” in its name, gracefully ties the entire theme together, symbolizing transformation and beauty.

Exploring the Interior: Pockets, Tucks, and Ephemera

Opening the Paris Papillon Junk Journal reveals a delightful array of pockets, tuck spots, and carefully chosen ephemera. Sharon thoughtfully incorporates these functional yet decorative elements throughout her journals, and this project is no exception. The very first spread greets you with a practical tuck spot crafted from a patterned page. While originally from the Mocha and Java kit, Sharon ingeniously digitally overlaid a soft green hue onto the brown, perfectly aligning it with her chosen theme. The large, die-cut shape of this tuck spot not only provides ample space for keepsakes but also adds an appealing visual contour to the page.

A charming bird image, plucked from The Graphics Fairy’s Ornithologist kit, graces this spread, printed beautifully on a piece of authentic vintage ledger paper. The subtle lines and aged texture of the ledger paper lend an authentic historical feel to the illustration, making the bird appear as if it flew directly from an antique natural history book. To further enrich the French theme, Sharon discovered a stunning stereocard. Although its colors aren’t green, its vibrant pop of color and captivating image perfectly complement the overall aesthetic, adding an unexpected element of visual interest. Completing this initial spread are delicate number diamonds from the Mocha and Java kit, securely fastened with elegant brass brads, enhancing the vintage appeal and textural richness.

Thoughtful Layering and Thematic Cohesion

Sharon’s dedication to layering and thematic cohesion is evident on every page. For instance, the captivating dogwood flower graphic, irresistible to Sharon, was printed onto yet another piece of vintage ledger paper. The beauty lies in the subtle transparency, allowing the faint, historical handwriting to peek through the botanical print, creating a layered effect that speaks volumes about the passage of time and collected beauty. Adjacent to this, she crafted a charming notecard from a vintage French postcard, perfectly sized for journaling or hidden messages. A decorative frame from the French Newspaper kit serves as an elegant tuck spot, cleverly integrating more French ephemera into the design.

One particular page spread stands out as a testament to creative playfulness. The signature itself contains a unique dictionary page, serendipitously featuring the word “Paris”! This delightful coincidence adds an extra layer of meaning and charm. Sharon further enhanced this page with some fun, wispy yarn, introducing a soft texture and visual interest that playfully breaks up the grid of the dictionary print. Using another elegant frame from the French Newspaper kit, she created a whimsical little glitter shaker. This sparkling addition is reminiscent of the vibrant energy and glamorous glitz often associated with the City of Lights, adding a touch of unexpected joy.

Inviting Interaction: Writing Spaces and Wrap-Around Embellishments

A junk journal is, at its heart, a space for personal expression and memory-keeping. Sharon thoughtfully included several additional writing spaces throughout the journal. One such inviting spot was created using a distressed brown book cover from the Coffee and Cream kit, which she then lined with rich, coffee-dyed paper. This intentional choice provides a lovely, aged backdrop that is perfect for jotting down thoughts, dreams, or even sketching. The pièce de résistance on this page is a magnificent butterfly from the Butterfly Garden kit. Printed large and bold, this butterfly serves as a stunning wrap-around embellishment, its delicate wings seemingly embracing the page and inviting interaction.

The very heart of the journal’s signature features a striking printable collage page from the Cream and Green kit. This central spread provides a burst of additional colors and intricate details, creating a space where the eye can happily get lost in the vintage patterns and illustrations. Sharon further enhanced this section by creating another clever folder-over page tuck, offering yet more room for mementos or additional journaling. Inside this tuck, she placed a piece of vintage ledger paper, offering a blank canvas for future collage work or further written reflections.

The Charm of Illustrated Elements and Versatile Frames

The Cream and Green kit proved to be a treasure trove, including two exquisite illustrated teacups that Sharon knew she had to incorporate. One of these delicate teacups is featured on a spread, carefully cut out but left unattached. This thoughtful decision offers versatility; the teacup could be moved to another part of the journal, adhered permanently, or even have a poignant quote or sentiment written on its reverse side, making it a truly interactive element.

The elegant frames from the French Newspaper kit demonstrated remarkable versatility throughout this journal, serving as perfect pockets and tuck spots on numerous pages. This particular spread beautifully exemplifies their adaptability. Sharon cut out the middle oval from one of these frames to ingeniously create another distinct pocket, adding depth and functionality to the page. She further enriched this area by incorporating ephemera from both the French Paperie kit and the Coffee and Cream kit, crafting a charming miniature coin envelope pocket and a coordinating tag to tuck inside. These small, intricate details add layers of discovery and delight for the viewer.

Continuing the exploration, another page features a rustic yet elegant pocket fashioned from old green fabric and delicate lace. This textural combination evokes a sense of antique charm and warmth. Inside this unique pocket, Sharon placed a notecard crafted from ephemera found in the Mocha and Java kit. And, as promised, the second exquisite teacup from the Cream and Green kit makes its appearance here, nestled perfectly with the notecard, creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing pairing that truly feels like a perfect match.

The Grand Finale: A Beautifully Curated Back Cover

The journey through Sharon’s Paris Papillon Junk Journal culminates with a thoughtfully designed back cover. Here, she utilized more of the beautifully patterned papers from the Mocha and Java kit to construct a generous pocket, perfect for housing even more precious ephemera or personal mementos. To add a final touch of elegance and height, Sharon created a very tall tag from the intricate coffee plant plate included in the Coffee and Cream kit. This unique tag stands proudly within the pocket, drawing the eye and adding a botanical flourish. The journal is then gracefully finished with one more charming French postcard, tucked in to complete the vintage narrative. Each element on the back cover serves as a final, delightful invitation to reflect on the journey through this extraordinary journal.

Sharon’s dedication to detail, her ability to blend different kits seamlessly, and her passion for vintage aesthetics shine through every page of this Paris Papillon Junk Journal. It is a true celebration of creative paper crafting, demonstrating the endless possibilities when imagination meets a rich collection of vintage imagery.
