Hello Everyone! My name is Sam Poole, and I am absolutely delighted and incredibly excited to share with you my very first Graphics Fairy design team project. It truly feels like a dream come true, as I have been an ardent fan and dedicated follower of The Graphics Fairy for many, many years. The wealth of resources and the supportive community here have always fueled my passion for vintage aesthetics and paper crafting. I am deeply honored to now be working alongside such a talented group of creative women, all united by a love for history, art, and the beauty of handmade creations.

The Heart of the French Farmhouse: A Dream Unfolded

My journal is deeply inspired by my profound love for all things French and a long-cherished dream to one day live in the enchanting French countryside. I have always envisioned myself residing in a quaint, rural area of France, nestled within the walls of a gorgeous, time-worn old farmhouse. This journal is a tangible manifestation of that dream, a personal tribute to the rustic elegance and simple beauty of French rural life.

Allow me to set the scene for you, to paint a vivid picture of my dream home, the very essence of which I’ve tried to capture within these pages. Imagine a tranquil setting, surrounded by vast, undulating fields of green and vibrant apple orchards, where the air is sweet with the scent of blossoms and earth. Above, swallows dart gracefully through the glorious warm sun, their joyful chirps filling the peaceful silence. The garden at the back of the house is a riot of natural beauty, brimming with fresh, organic vegetables and an abundance of wild flowers, their petals dancing in the gentle breeze. The gentle hum of bees provides a constant, soothing soundtrack, emanating from the many beehives scattered amongst the blooms.

Life on this dream farm is bustling yet harmonious. Horses graze lazily in the pastures, cows chew contentedly, and a lively chorus of geese and chickens adds to the charm of daily life. It’s a place where time slows down, where the rhythms of nature dictate the day, and where every moment is imbued with a sense of simplicity and profound beauty. This vision, so clear in my mind, guided every choice I made for this French Farmhouse Junk Journal.

Crafting the Journal: Materials and Techniques

The Foundation: Building a Sturdy and Authentic Base

The very foundation of this French Farmhouse Junk Journal was carefully selected to evoke a sense of history and authenticity. I chose to use vintage French music cards as the base for the journal covers. These cards are not only beautiful with their aged patina and classic typography, but they also possess a wonderful thickness and sturdiness, making them an ideal and durable material for a journal that is meant to be handled and cherished. Their inherent vintage character immediately sets the tone for the entire piece.

To form the spine of the journal, I meticulously joined the covers using a delicate piece of vintage linen combined with elegant lace. This choice was deliberate; the linen provides a natural, rustic texture that perfectly complements the farmhouse aesthetic, while the lace adds a touch of classic French elegance and softness. The combination not only ensures the structural integrity of the journal but also enhances its visual appeal, making the spine a beautiful feature in itself.

The Interior World: Paper Selection and Palettes

For the internal pages and the overarching aesthetic of my journal, I found immense inspiration in The Graphics Fairy’s ‘Spring Meadows End Papers’ bundle. These organic elements soften the pages and add a touch of whimsical, natural charm, reinforcing the journal’s connection to the countryside.

Throughout the journal, you’ll discover various mixed media techniques employed to create depth and interest. Layering different papers, ephemera, and fabrics, along with subtle distressing and inking, helps to give each page a weathered, antique appearance, as if it has been lovingly preserved through generations. Pockets and tuck spots, often created with vintage postcards or invoices, invite interaction and offer small surprises, perfect for stashing away tiny treasures or written notes.

A Journey Through the Pages: Exploring Vintage Ephemera

Flipping through this journal is like taking a stroll through a French country market or rummaging through an old attic filled with cherished family heirlooms. Each page is a carefully curated vignette, telling a small part of the French farmhouse story.
