Lesly’s Vision: The Inspiration Behind “A Moment in Time”
Hello again, everyone! It’s Lesly from Crescent Moon Journals, here to share my latest creation for The Graphics Fairy Design Team. For this particular journal, I wanted to venture into something a little different and explore new techniques. Having never crafted a ring-bound journal before, I decided this was the perfect opportunity to try it out. The foundation of this journal is built upon three charming rusty rings, to which I’ve thoughtfully tied pieces of delicate tulle and elegant lace. Each ring is further adorned with a beautiful crocheted dangle, adding a touch of rustic charm and softness.
The central theme of this journal is a deeply personal one: it focuses on photography and the poignant act of capturing a moment in time – a moment that, once photographed, instantly becomes a cherished memory of the past. To embody this theme, I’ve incorporated photographs from various time periods throughout the journal, each telling its own silent story. My choice of this subject stems from a profound influence in my life: my father was a dedicated photographer. Growing up, my childhood was filled with his passion, as he captured a multitude of subjects through his lens. One of my most treasured memories is visiting his darkroom, watching in awe as images magically appeared and came to life on the photographic paper. That sense of wonder, of preserving fleeting moments, is what I aimed to capture within the pages of this journal.
The journey into this journal begins with its captivating cover. I started with a sturdy piece of heavy handmade paper, providing a robust and textural base. On this foundation, I began the process of layering, a technique central to junk journaling. A vintage Tim Holtz frame elegantly encases an enlarged photo from the 1930s, carefully chosen to fit the frame’s dimensions perfectly. The photo itself, despite originating from a tiny original, boasts amazing quality, truly bringing a piece of history to life. A delicate piece of mica protects and enhances the photograph, adding a subtle shimmer and vintage appeal. I continued to layer various pieces of lace, meticulously arranging them until the desired aesthetic was achieved – a look that is both rich and gracefully aged. To complete the cover, I added a lustrous mother-of-pearl button and two tiny, antique roses in the upper right corner, lending a delicate, timeless touch. The back cover mirrors this elegance, layered with an old book page and a beautiful crocheted doily, further solidifying its vintage charm.
Opening the journal, the inside of the front cover immediately draws the eye with a fascinating relic: a very old school report card. Its heavy paper quality proved perfect for adding an extra layer of strength and authentic character to the cover. This page also features a mica pocket, thoughtfully designed to hold an antique CDV (carte de visite) card and a delicate French letter, each piece whispering tales from the past. At the bottom of this introductory page, a beautiful piece of whitework, a traditional form of embroidery, is exquisitely topped with a 100-year-old flower trim, adding texture and historical beauty. The subsequent page offers a playful element with a lace flip that partially covers a sheet music title page, inviting interaction and discovery.
Moving through the journal, an old ledger page becomes a canvas for further embellishment. I’ve adorned it with a charming crepe paper ruffle, complemented by delicate lace and a small photo pin. This arrangement not only adds visual interest and a soft, tactile quality but also cleverly functions as a shallow pocket, perfect for tucking away small mementos or notes. This thoughtful detail perfectly aligns with the journal’s theme of collecting and preserving moments.
A beautifully simple belly band graces another page, designed to securely hold an envelope tag. This tag itself is a testament to creative repurposing, crafted from an envelope that originally accompanied a group of captivating 1930s portraits from my collection. Ingeniously, this vintage envelope transforms into a functional pocket right on the tag, offering a perfect spot for additional keepsakes or journaling prompts. This dual functionality is a hallmark of clever junk journal design, maximizing both aesthetic appeal and practical use.
Further along, a delicate lace pocket adds an ethereal touch, thoughtfully designed to house a journaling card. This card prominently features one of the enchanting 1930s portraits I mentioned earlier, providing a dedicated space for personal reflection or notes. The subsequent page continues the musical motif, presenting more of the beautifully aged title page from the sheet music, adding continuity and charm.
This particular page is ingeniously fashioned from an old document, lending it an instant sense of history. I’ve simply folded it over to create a clever tuck spot, perfectly sized to hold a vintage cabinet card and a journaling card. While the gentleman on the cabinet card isn’t fully visible in this static image, I genuinely believe it features one of the most handsome couples I’ve ever encountered on a cabinet card – a detail you absolutely must see in the video tour to fully appreciate! The two pages that follow this are creatively derived from a single envelope, which I meticulously cut in half to form two distinct and functional pockets, demonstrating resourcefulness and artistic flair.
Continuing the exploration, an old vellum document serves as the delicate yet sturdy base for another enchanting page. I’ve beautifully embellished this with an exquisite, embroidered fabric pocket, adding a luxurious texture and visual depth. This lovely pocket is perfectly sized to hold a journaling card, providing yet another dedicated space for personal thoughts, quotes, or tiny mementos, all contributing to the journal’s narrative of preserved moments. The soft translucence of the vellum adds an almost ethereal quality to the page, making the embroidery stand out even more.
Further enhancing the collection of pages, another spread features a music sheet as its backdrop, instantly evoking a sense of harmony and nostalgia. Upon this musical canvas, I’ve carefully placed a mica pocket, designed to elegantly display a wonderful vintage photograph sourced from The Graphics Fairy. The interplay of the aged music notes and the timeless image creates a beautiful juxtaposition, underscoring the journal’s theme of historical layers and artistic resonance. The mica pocket not only secures the image but also adds a subtle sheen, drawing the eye to this central focal point.
The journey through “A Moment in Time” concludes with grace and thoughtful design. Here, you’ll discover more of the charming sheet music, a recurring motif that ties the journal together with a melodic thread. The opposite page, forming the back cover, is adorned with an old Italian book page, its unique script and texture adding a sophisticated touch. This is further embellished with a portion of the beautiful crocheted doily that graces the journal’s exterior. Ingeniously, I’ve left a section of this doily open, transforming it into a functional pocket, perfect for holding small treasures. To complete this final flourish, another small, crocheted piece and a delightful photo pin are attached, echoing the embellishments found throughout the journal. All the exquisite graphics used in this journal, unless they are genuine antique originals, were lovingly sourced from The Graphics Fairy Premium website, a treasure trove for any crafter.
