Hello, Everyone! I’m Julie, and I’m so excited to share my latest journal with you, affectionately titled “When My Grandparents Were Young.” The seed for this project was planted many years ago when I stumbled upon a small, captivating book filled with intriguing facts about the year 1900. This seemingly simple purchase sparked a profound idea that would eventually blossom into this cherished journal.

You see, the year 1900 held a special significance for my own family history: one of my grandmothers was born in that very year, while my other grandmother arrived in 1893. My two grandfathers also entered the world in the vibrant 1890s. This convergence of birth years in such a pivotal historical period always fascinated me. I often pondered what life was truly like for them as children and young adults, experiencing the turn of the century and the rapid changes that followed. I always thought it would be an incredibly rewarding and fun project to visually explore the world as it existed when they were growing up, capturing the essence of their formative years through historical imagery and storytelling.

To embark on this ambitious family history journal, my initial step was to meticulously plan the thematic scope. I began by creating a comprehensive list of subjects relevant to that specific time period—roughly the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Categories such as clothing styles, modes of travel, daily hygiene practices, typical school environments, popular forms of entertainment, and domestic life were all carefully considered. This detailed list became my guiding star, directing my search for the perfect vintage images, delightful ephemera, and inspiring illustrations from the vast resources available at The Graphics Fairy. This systematic approach ensured that my journal would offer a rich, multi-faceted portrayal of life during my grandparents’ youth.

My search for authentic historical materials was incredibly fruitful, thanks to The Graphics Fairy. I was absolutely amazed by the sheer volume and quality of ephemera reflecting everyday life between the years 1890 and 1920. From quaint advertisements and fashion plates to charming illustrations and historical documents, I discovered an abundance of treasures. Both The Graphics Fairy website’s extensive collections and the invaluable archives on its blog proved to be goldmines. This wealth of vintage ephemera allowed me to pack my journal to the brim, creating a visual feast that truly brings the past to life, as you’ll undoubtedly observe in the accompanying video tour.

When it comes to constructing my journals, I have a particular fondness for using vintage *Better Homes and Gardens* ring-binders as the base. These binders, with their robust construction and nostalgic appeal, provide the perfect foundation for my visual narratives. I found this particular one online for a mere $5.00; it dates back to 1951, adding another layer of authenticity to the project. Instead of traditional paper pages, I opt for heavier cardstock dividers, which offer a sturdy canvas for layering and embellishing. My journals are crafted not as spaces for extensive writing, like conventional diaries, but rather as immersive visual experiences. They are designed to tell stories through images, textures, and carefully chosen ephemera, evoking emotions and reflecting historical narratives in a uniquely artistic way.

To add dynamic interaction and visual interest, I frequently incorporate flip pages into my base layouts, utilizing soft muslin or delicate ribbon as flexible hinges. This technique allows for hidden layers and surprises within the journal, inviting the viewer to explore further. Beyond the foundational vintage photographs and printed ephemera, I delight in adding an array of beautiful embellishments. Sprigs of detailed flowers, luscious fruit illustrations, or elegant greenery serve to enhance my focal points, drawing the eye and adding an organic, natural touch to the historical scenes. These subtle yet impactful additions transform each page into a miniature mixed-media art piece, creating a truly immersive experience for anyone flipping through the journal.

Finding these perfect embellishments is always an exciting part of the process, and The Graphics Fairy is my go-to resource. I systematically search through the various categories: Bundles, Printables, and Images, constantly employing the intuitive filters within these three sections to meticulously narrow down my search. Whether I’m looking for a specific botanical illustration or a unique vintage border, these filters help me pinpoint exactly what I need. Furthermore, I regularly delve into the extensive archives found on The Graphics Fairy blog, particularly enjoying the “Friday Freebies.” This treasure trove often yields unexpected delights, and there’s a dedicated search link on that page where I frequently uncover even more obscure and enchanting vintage ephemera and photos to enrich my projects.

One of my favorite design approaches is to create captivating two-page spreads where facing pages are intimately related to the same subject, allowing for a broader narrative. Consider this particular spread, for instance. On the right-hand page, I envisioned a scene featuring a fortune teller engaging with her customer. To achieve this, I carefully fussy-cut a vintage photograph of a gypsy woman, precisely positioning her behind a shimmering magic ball, ensuring her gaze was directed towards the facing left page. The magic ball itself is elevated slightly with adhesive squares, creating a wonderful sense of dimension, making it appear as though she is truly seated and interacting with the orb. Similarly, some of the vibrant apples on the page are also mounted on adhesive squares, adding depth. Above the fortune teller, I incorporated delicate spinning wheels. I used brads inserted through small puncture holes at the center of each wheel, but here’s a playful twist: I left one of the “legs” on each wheel free, allowing it to act as a pointer. Finally, I mounted a thematic tag to complete this intriguing right-hand page.

Moving to the complementary left-hand page of this spread, I sought to deepen the mysterious atmosphere. I utilized beautiful paper from The Graphics Fairy’s enchanting Luna the Magic Queen bundle as the foundational background. To further enhance the mystical effect, I applied gesso through a intricate clock stencil, adding subtle texture and an ethereal touch that hints at the passage of time and hidden secrets. The luminous moon positioned to the left of the elegant lady on this page is actually one of the magic balls, artfully distressed with various inks to give it an otherworldly glow. The lady herself is supported by adhesive squares exclusively on her right side, a clever technique that allows for two charming little tags to be tucked subtly behind her flowing gown, creating an interactive element for the viewer to discover. This layered approach ensures that both pages contribute to a cohesive, storytelling narrative within the journal.

I sincerely hope you have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the intricate details and vintage charm of this family history journal. My greatest wish is that you feel profoundly inspired to unleash your own creativity and begin crafting with the incredible array of wonderful images and ephemera generously provided by The Graphics Fairy. Remember, the beauty of junk journaling lies in its versatility. Even if you don’t currently have the time or resources to create a grand, comprehensive visual journal like mine, please know that any single page within it could easily be adapted to make a stunning greeting card, a unique tag, or even a beautiful cover for a smaller, more intimate journal. Every piece of vintage ephemera holds a story waiting to be told, and you are the perfect storyteller.
