Meet the Artist: Heather Naggy of Ruby & Pearl xo
Hello everyone! My name is Heather Naggy, and I am the creative force behind Ruby & Pearl xo. It is an immense pleasure to share that this Faded Floral Junk Journal marks my very first design team project for The Graphics Fairy, and I couldn’t be more excited to present it to you. I am truly looking forward to the incredible opportunity to collaborate with this amazing team of creative women in the coming season, bringing more vintage-inspired art to life.
Seasonal Inspiration: Golden Hues and Avian Migrations
Here in Pennsylvania, USA, where I reside, September brings with it a gentle transition as we bid farewell to the vibrant energy of summer and welcome the serene embrace of autumn. As the leaves begin their magnificent transformation and the air takes on a crispness, I’m always struck by the subtle yet profound change in the light. The sunlight at this time of year takes on an ethereal, golden quality, painting everything in a warm, inviting glow. It’s a truly beautiful phenomenon that I wonder if any of you have also observed as your own seasons shift. This distinct golden light became a central muse for this journal, inspiring me to infuse its pages and ephemera with a palette of rich golden yellows and comforting warm tones. Working with such a naturally harmonious and beautiful color scheme was an absolute delight.
Beyond the changing light, the natural world offers another profound source of inspiration at this time of year: the birds. They are diligently preparing for their long journeys to warmer climates, a beautiful testament to the cycles of nature. This seasonal activity deeply resonated with me and guided my selection of imagery for the journal. I was particularly drawn to The Graphics Fairy’s extensive collection of bird images and printables. I meticulously chose an assortment of different swallows, known for their grace and migratory patterns, and complemented them with other exquisite bird illustrations available on the site. The bird postage stamp printable sheet, in particular, captured my imagination and found a special place within the journal’s pages, adding a touch of vintage charm and wanderlust.
Crafting the Faded Floral Aesthetic: Materials and Techniques
The process of bringing this Faded Floral Junk Journal to life was a joyous exploration, resulting in an eclectic mix of beautiful, textured pages that feel truly cohesive. To create the foundational structure, I primarily used tea-dyed papers, which impart a wonderful antique look and feel, setting the perfect vintage tone. I then layered in genuine vintage and antique papers, adding authentic historical character and unique textures that only time can create. Furthermore, many of the vibrant and visually interesting pages within the journal are crafted from printables sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy Premium site. These digital images offer an effortless way to introduce pops of color, intricate patterns, and captivating motifs, enriching the visual tapestry of the journal.
Once the base pages were established, the real fun of embellishing began. I meticulously decorated each page, creating depth and interest through a diverse array of materials. This included an assortment of patterned papers, delicate fragments of old wallpapers, evocative antique French papers, and soft floral fabrics that echo the journal’s theme. On a few select pages, I incorporated sari silk ruffles, which add a luxurious touch and a beautiful tactile element. Charms, small trinkets, and a variety of carefully chosen ephemera were strategically placed to complement the journal’s warm color palette and overarching faded floral theme. To enhance the interactive experience, I thoughtfully integrated numerous pockets and tuck spots throughout the journal – these delightful additions are, for me, what makes a junk journal so uniquely engaging and full of discovery. The vast and diverse Printables section of The Graphics Fairy Premium site proved to be an invaluable resource, providing an endless supply of beautiful images that perfectly aligned with my vision for this journal.
Interactive Elements and Hidden Treasures
One of my favorite features within this junk journal are the charming envelopes tucked here and there throughout its pages. They are much more than just decorative elements; they introduce a wonderful interactive dimension, inviting the viewer to pause, explore, and uncover hidden treasures. Whether they hold tiny notes, miniature prints, or other small ephemera, these envelopes add an element of delightful surprise. I was particularly impressed by the exquisite selection of pre-designed envelopes available on The Graphics Fairy Premium site – their variety and vintage aesthetic made choosing the perfect ones an absolute pleasure!
A Meaningful Message: The Inside Cover Quote
The inside cover of this journal holds a special place in my heart. The soft pink fabric provides a beautiful, delicate backdrop, against which the golden hues of the flowers truly glow. This page is further enriched by a quote that deeply resonates with me: “But these are the days we dream about, when the sunlight paints us gold.” It serves as a gentle yet profound reminder to truly pause, breathe, and consciously soak in the beauty of the present moments that often pass us by too quickly. Life’s true richness, I believe, lies in these small, fleeting moments – the way the beautiful sunlight streams through a window, the sweet melodies of birds singing their daily songs, or the quiet joy of creating something by hand. There is so much wonder to be found in the world, and this journal, with its faded florals and golden light, is an ode to appreciating those everyday miracles.
