A Deep Dive into Anna Hollingworth’s Shakespearean Creation
Hello everyone! I hope you’re enjoying a lovely summer and indulging in your favorite crafting endeavors. Today, I’m delighted to introduce you to “The Bard,” a junk journal passionately dedicated to William Shakespeare and his monumental contribution to the world of literature and theatre. This project was a true joy to create, and once again, I found myself spoiled for choice with the rich array of images and ephemera provided within the vast collection of bundles on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. From the outset, I envisioned Shakespeare’s timeless works housed within the covers of a distinguished red book, a concept that guided many of my design decisions.
Crafting the Cover: A Rustic & Regal Entrance
My choice for the journal’s cover stems directly from this vision, selecting a stunning image from the popular Book Covers and Tintypes bundle. To give the journal an authentic, aged feel, I meticulously created distinct ridges on the spine, mimicking the natural wear and texture of an antique volume. The cover itself was then varnished, a crucial step in achieving that beautiful rustic ‘leather’ effect. This not only added a protective layer but also imparted a rich depth and tactile quality. To further enhance its vintage appeal and underscore the timeless value held within, I applied gold gilding wax. This touch of gold beautifully complements the deep hues of the cover, suggesting the enduring legacy of Shakespeare’s genius.
Thematic Embellishments: Theatrical Characters & Vintage Details
One of my favorite elements in this journal is the series of tabs featuring delightful Theatrical Characters. These whimsical figures, sourced from the Theatrical Characters bundle, were absolutely perfect for this project. I painstakingly fussy cut each one, carefully detaching them from their backgrounds, and then aged them to seamlessly blend with the journal’s overall vintage aesthetic. These characters appear to float gracefully along the side of the journal, drawing the eye and inviting closer inspection. I also incorporated the remaining characters into an internal page, creating a charming bunting effect by delicately attaching them to a fine gold thread. This detail adds a celebratory, festive touch, evoking the lively spirit of a Shakespearean play.
Pages of Wonder: Marbled Endpapers and Literary Figures
The endpapers for this journal were selected from the exquisite Marbled Endpapers bundle. I printed these beautiful designs on 120 gsm (approximately 32 lb) ivory paper, a choice that perfectly emulates the look and feel of original antique marbled papers. The tactile quality and subtle texture of this paper truly enhance the vintage illusion. I further enhanced their aged appearance by carefully distressing their edges, ensuring they harmonized with the journal’s overarching theme. The rich, intricate colors of these endpapers complemented the deep red of the cover magnificently, creating a cohesive and visually appealing introduction to the journal’s contents. Within the pages, you’ll also discover a collection of “Shakespearean Women” images. These figures, taken from the aptly named Shakespearean Women bundle, were, of course, absolutely perfect for this theme, adding a touch of grace and literary depth to various spreads.
Hidden Treasures: Envelopes, Pockets, and Surprising Fold-outs
Every junk journal thrives on its interactive elements and delightful surprises. For this project, I created a charming collaged envelope using imagery from the Royalty Images Bundle. This elegant envelope is snugly inserted into a transparent pocket, awaiting the precious thoughts, mementos, or secret notes of its future owner. It’s a dedicated space for personal reflection and treasured sentiments. Additionally, scattered throughout the journal are various pockets and tuck spots, many of which I crafted using beautiful patterns from the Wallpaper Samples bundle. These provide perfect little nooks for storing ephemera, quotes, or small keepsakes.
Perhaps one of my favorite elements, designed to spark delight and curiosity, is the fold-out theater plan. This intricate page lies in wait, a wonderful surprise for anyone who decides to seek it out within the journal’s depths. The reason it holds such a special place for me is its promise: it vividly evokes the anticipation and excitement of an audience settling into their seats, ready to be swept away by the magic of a live performance. It’s a miniature stage, ready for imagination to play out.
