Hi everyone, my name is Abby, and it is an absolute pleasure and privilege to be creating my very first journal as part of The Graphics Fairy Design Team. For those who might be unfamiliar with my work, I am a mixed media artist based on the beautiful east coast of Suffolk, England. I share my life with my art college sweetheart and our two charming kittens, finding endless joy in both my home and my craft. A significant shift in my life occurred in 2020 when I moved just five minutes from the captivating coastline. This proximity to the sea has profoundly impacted my artistic journey, inspiring and shaping much of my work in ways I could never have anticipated.
Over the past four years of living by the coast, my deep connection to water has only intensified, growing stronger with each passing season. Consequently, my artwork has become heavily influenced by the rich tapestry of stories, ancient mythology, and the unique aesthetic of the sea. When contemplating my first project for The Graphics Fairy, I knew instinctively that I wanted to explore the timeless theme of water. My creative process often revolves around the four fundamental elements – water, earth, air, and fire – and water holds a particularly special place in my heart. Delving into the extensive collection of water-themed bundles on the Premium Membership Site was an absolutely delightful experience. With such an abundance of exquisite vintage images to choose from, I dedicated time to meticulously organize them into a dedicated folder on my computer. This preparatory step allowed me to fully immerse myself in the chosen imagery, setting the stage for the narrative of The Tidekeeper’s Cottage to unfold.
Poetry and evocative words are not merely additions to my creative process; they are often the very starting point for my work, serving as a powerful muse. Before even cutting a single piece of paper, I spent time envisioning the overall layout of the journal, meticulously outlining a list of the distinct spreads I wanted to feature. This thoughtful planning proved invaluable in guiding my selection from the multitude of breathtaking images available, ensuring each choice contributed cohesively to the overarching story. This junk journal, therefore, is more than just a collection of pages; it is a profound window into the inherent magic of water and the boundless mystery of the sea. My inspiration was drawn from a fascinating confluence of elements: the surreal beauty of a secluded coastal cottage, the unwavering courage and pioneering spirit of 19th-century paleontologist Mary Anning, the haunting melancholy associated with the mythical selkies, and the quiet yet powerful rebellion of Victorian women who found solace and freedom in gathering seaweed along the shore. Through these diverse inspirations, this journal lovingly invites you on an immersive journey through time, myth, and cherished memory.
As I began to conceptualize the physical manifestation of The Tidekeeper’s Cottage, I envisioned its walls adorned with a tactile beauty, reminiscent of bare plaster surfaces subtly encrusted with delicate pearls and shimmering shells. Fortunately, I had some exquisite French clay laundered linen from Merchant & Mills, remnants from a previous blind-making project, which immediately spoke to me. I knew this material would be perfect for the journal’s cover. To transform this beautiful linen into a durable book cloth, I carefully ironed on a layer of interfacing, giving it the necessary structure and resilience while retaining its inherent softness and elegance.
The very foundation of the journal’s cover was ingeniously crafted from two sturdy envelopes. These were meticulously covered with the prepared linen, creating a seamless and inviting exterior, before the addition of the beautiful end papers. The finished journal measures approximately 7.5 inches by 9.5 inches, a comfortable and substantial size for both creation and contemplation. Inside, I incorporated three distinct signatures, each comprising four pages of a high-quality mixed media cartridge paper. This choice of paper ensures durability and provides an ideal surface for various artistic applications, resulting in a generous total of 42 sides for journaling and embellishment. I carefully stitched these signatures together using the traditional kettle stitch method, a technique known for its strength and aesthetic appeal. To further reinforce the spine and ensure the longevity of this cherished piece, I added a strip of gauze. For the headbands, I fashioned them from natural linen bias binding I had on hand, adding a delicate strip of string and double-sided tape to secure the edges. A particular detail I adore is the addition of silk, linen, and lace strips along the edges of some pages. These delicate additions not only introduce a beautiful textural contrast but also impart a wonderful softness, enhancing the overall sensory experience of flipping through the journal.
The vintage-inspired label gracing the cover was lovingly handmade from a simple piece of cardboard, which I then stained with rich walnut ink to achieve an aged, timeworn appearance. The words themselves were sourced from a vintage Curtain receipt found on The Graphics Fairy website – a true gem from the extensive collection of vintage ephemera available to Premium Members. I found these particular words so captivating that I chose to incorporate them again later within the journal, using them to line an envelope, creating a subtle yet meaningful thematic echo.
One of the most charming embellishments on the journal’s cover is the miniature window, painstakingly crafted from authentic pieces of driftwood that I had personally collected during my walks along the beach. To complete this whimsical feature, I integrated a tiny lead window frame, a precious keepsake from my own childhood dollhouse. This detail adds a deeply personal touch, marrying natural elements with a nostalgic fragment of my past.
To further enhance the coastal theme and add a touch of shimmering elegance, I hand-sewed some of my cherished vintage mother-of-pearl buttons directly onto the shoreline image sourced from the ‘Sea Spray’ bundle. I used a delicate vintage button thread for this, and I absolutely adore how these buttons mimic the appearance of real shells, glistening beautifully on the beach under the warm sunlight, adding a tactile and visual depth to the cover.
The immersive journey into The Tidekeeper’s Cottage Junk Journal truly begins at the very edge of the world, where the steadfast land meets the boundless sea. This evocative place, meticulously imagined as being constructed from weathered driftwood and iridescent shells, is depicted as holding the soft whispers of the ocean and the ancient secrets of those who once dwelled within its embrace. The opening page immediately draws the reader in with the poignant words, “It was a lonely and beautiful place,” thoughtfully printed on delicate vellum. This sets the perfect tone, introducing us to a dreamlike world where the boundaries between tangible reality and ethereal dreams beautifully blur. For the end papers, I absolutely loved using the exquisite wallpaper from The Graphics Fairy’s ‘Pink, Gold & Green’ bundle. Its vibrant yet soft aesthetic instantly establishes the enchanting tone and overall vintage appeal for the entirety of the journal, creating a cohesive visual narrative from the very first glance.
The Tidekeeper’s Cottage itself is presented as more than just a dwelling; it’s a living repository of countless stories, cherished memories, and dreams born from the sea. It stands as a fantastical cottage, precariously perched at the land’s edge, where the rhythmic meeting of the tide and shore defines its very existence. To bring this vision to life, I carefully selected a charming watercolor image of a cottage from The Graphics Fairy’s ‘Lacemakers Cottage’ bundle, printing it onto high-quality watercolor paper to enhance its artistic texture. Throughout the journal, I integrated pages of vintage lined paper, offering ample space for the owner to add their own reflections and future journal entries, making it a truly interactive piece. A particularly delightful detail is the collaged piece of Horn Wrack onto one of the pages. I find its papery texture incredibly beautiful. When I first began collecting it, I, like many others, mistook it for seaweed. I often discover it dried and gracefully washed up on the beach, and I can easily imagine the Tidekeeper herself regularly collecting such natural treasures, integrating them into her daily life and the very fabric of her home.
Within the enchanting narrative of The Tidekeeper’s Cottage, its very walls are imbued with a sense of history, having silently witnessed and absorbed countless stories over the years. These narratives speak of the elusive Selkies, shape-shifting seal-folk; of intrepid fossil hunters, meticulously searching the ancient cliffs; of captivating mermaids, whose songs drift on the breeze; of brave sailors and resilient fishermen, battling the relentless waves; and the hearty, communal spirit embodied in rousing sea shanties. The idea of using intricate vintage wallpaper as a visual metaphor for the holder of these myriad stories deeply resonated with me. While The Graphics Fairy Premium Site boasts an incredible array of beautiful wallpapers, I found myself particularly drawn to the elegant patterns within the ‘French Floral Motifs’ bundle and the rich textures of the ‘Pink, Gold & Green Ephemera’ bundle. On one memorable page, a charming image of a girl, carefully selected from the ‘Marsh & Pond’ bundle, was printed onto delicate tissue paper. This transparent image was then skillfully glued onto a letter featuring the exquisite ‘Beautiful Script’ from the site, creating a layered effect that suggests hidden depths and whispered secrets.
Throughout the carefully curated pages of the journal, the sea itself transcends its physical form to become a living, breathing character—a powerful voice that echoes with the profound memories of the past. A typewritten vellum page poignantly reads, “I can hear their voices on the waves,” exquisitely capturing the ethereal, dreamlike quality of the ocean’s ceaseless call. This passage is thoughtfully framed by the soft, undulating colors of the sea, embodied in the captivating image of a sea goddess from the ‘Ocean Blues’ bundle. When printed onto transparent acetate, this image evokes the sensation of being submerged underwater, gazing upwards towards the dappled light and mysterious surface, truly immersing the viewer in an aquatic wonderland.
Another evocative passage, ‘Like driftwood she was shaped by the sea,’ was printed onto one of the beautiful Vintage Paperie pages, immediately grounding the reader in the journal’s central theme of transformation by the ocean. To complement this, I crafted a unique envelope by stitching together tracing paper, which offers a semi-transparent quality, hinting at the contents within. This delicate envelope was then adorned with a soft silk tie and an elegant image of sea lettuce, carefully chosen from the ‘Sea Spray’ bundle. The sea lettuce image was printed on watercolor paper, giving it a subtle texture, and then hand-stitched onto the envelope with fine linen twine, adding another layer of intricate detail and organic charm to this beautiful spread.
A profound and recurring theme throughout this junk journal is the intricate and often mystical connection between the past and the present. A dedicated section within the journal beautifully celebrates the remarkable discoveries of Mary Anning, the pioneering 19th-century paleontologist. By highlighting her tireless work along the very same shores that inspire this journal, we forge a direct link between the timeless human fascination with ancient fossils and the ongoing, dynamic story of the sea. It serves as a powerful reminder that the echoes of history are constantly present in the natural world around us.
In this particular segment of the journal, you will discover thoughtfully designed pockets and charming windows, each meticulously filled with detailed fossil and shell diagrams, alongside handwritten notes. These elements serve as a heartfelt tribute to Mary Anning’s extraordinary legacy and eloquently convey the enduring wonder of unearthing ancient stories hidden within the very stones of the earth. This interactive section encourages deeper engagement, inviting the viewer to explore and appreciate the historical and scientific marvels of the coast.
Over the past few years, I have developed a deep appreciation for collecting and pressing seaweed, a practice that has become a cherished hobby. I knew from the outset that I absolutely wanted to incorporate these beautiful natural elements into this journal, not just for their aesthetic appeal but also to weave in a fascinating historical narrative. I was particularly keen to share the story of the unique freedom discovered by Victorian women who engaged in the seemingly simple act of collecting seaweed.
For these women, the seashore offered a rare and precious sanctuary where they could cast off societal constraints, literally removing their shoes, exposing their ankles, and walking unchaperoned along the open shore. This act of communion with nature was, in its own quiet way, a profound expression of liberation. This poignant section of the journal prominently features real, carefully preserved pressed seaweeds, artfully displayed beneath layers of parchment paper. These seaweed pages not only evoke the burgeoning scientific curiosity of the Victorian era but also, and perhaps more importantly, celebrate the subtle yet powerful rebellion of these women who found empowerment and joy in the simple act of exploring the natural world.
The final pages of The Tidekeeper’s Cottage Junk Journal gently guide the reader back to the timeless, ever-flowing nature of water. Here, the profound message resonates: the sea remembers all. Every single drop holds a memory, and every cresting wave tells a story, an eternal narrative that unfolds with ceaseless grace. The journal thoughtfully concludes with a generously sized envelope pocket, designed to hold many more future explorations, discovered treasures, or personal reflections. The very last page is deliberately left with ample space, inviting you to add your own profound reflections, encouraging a deep and personal connection between your unique memories and the endless, captivating song of the sea.
This ‘Tidekeeper’s Cottage Journal’ is far more than a mere collection of beautifully arranged pages; it is an intimate exploration of the deep and multifaceted connections that bind nature, history, and myth. Every meticulously chosen element, from the delicate beauty of the pressed seaweeds to the subtle hint of a hidden selkie’s cloak, serves as an invitation. It beckons you to immerse yourself fully, to experience the profound magic of water and embrace the liberating freedom found along the shore. Whether you consider yourself a passionate collector of stories, a devoted lover of the sea, or simply a seeker of quiet, reflective moments, this exquisite junk journal offers a cherished space to wander, to dream, and to remember. I have poured my heart into making this journal and have truly loved every moment of its creation. I am currently engrossed in developing a few more editions that share this captivating theme. These will be available on my website in October.
