From Builder Basic to Modern Farmhouse Bliss: Our 48-Hour Bathroom Makeover Challenge
Get ready, folks, because I’m absolutely thrilled to pull back the curtain on a room makeover that has been a long-kept secret, and one that truly pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in just 48 hours! This project has been bursting at the seams, and I couldn’t be more excited to share every detail of this incredible transformation with you.
A few months ago, I announced an exciting partnership with Lowe’s: a room makeover for a deserving homeowner anywhere in the United States. We received an overwhelming response, with countless submissions showcasing kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces brimming with potential. While I wished we could have waved our magic wand over every single one, one particular space stood out, radiating with the promise of a truly dramatic reveal.
That space was a bathroom in Texas, and it was simply oozing with possibilities, just waiting for a touch of character and modern farmhouse charm.

The homeowners’ story resonated deeply with me. Bethany and Levi, married for seven years, live in a typical suburban builder-grade house, conveniently located next door to Levi’s family. Bethany, a recent graduate, works as a mental health counselor intern, while Levi is a wedding videographer and drummer in a worship band. Like many young couples, funds for extensive home improvements are a luxury they simply don’t have. They cherish hosting friends and family, and, in a habit I can certainly relate to, they talk to their dog and two cats as if they were their children. Their journey and aspirations mirrored so much of Robert’s and my own story.
Bethany eloquently expressed her desire for change: “If I have learned one thing about myself in the past few years, it’s that my environment affects everything about my physical, spiritual, and mental health. I am so not crafty nor handy, and so the bathroom has been one room that I haven’t been able to change. I would love to be able to wake up to a calm bathroom in order to start my morning off right and prepare for the day.” Her words painted a clear picture of how a serene and functional bathroom could profoundly impact their daily lives, transforming a mundane morning routine into a moment of peace and preparation.
With Bethany’s vision in mind, and after weeks of meticulous planning and preparation, Robert and I embarked on this exciting adventure in April. We weren’t alone; we were joined by an incredibly talented team of fellow DIY bloggers, each bringing their unique expertise and passion: Rachel from Maison de Pax, Jenna from Rain on a Tin Roof, Nina from Nina Hendrick Design, and April from House By Hoff. Together, a team of six enthusiastic DIYers, we faced a daunting challenge: to completely transform this master bathroom in a mere two days.
The “before” state of the bathroom was typical of many builder-grade homes: functional but lacking personality. It was a blank canvas yearning for character, a space that didn’t reflect the warmth and vibrancy of Bethany and Levi’s lives. The fixtures were dated, the finishes were basic, and the overall ambiance was far from the calming oasis Bethany dreamed of. Our mission was clear: inject modern farmhouse charm, enhance functionality, and create a sanctuary where they could truly relax and recharge.

The 48-Hour Dash: Challenges and Teamwork
“Totally doable, right?” we thought, with a mix of optimism and nervous excitement. The room, thankfully, possessed good bones, a solid foundation to work with. Our primary focus was on cosmetic changes, maximizing impact without extensive demolition, always keeping the tight 48-hour deadline in mind. While Robert and I, and indeed the entire team, aren’t professional contractors equipped with every conceivable skill, we understood that achieving a “wow-factor” often hinges on creative, non-structural updates. This bathroom held immense potential for such a transformation.
One of the most pressing issues was Bethany and Levi’s existing shower door. It was cloudy and so heavily rusted that it wouldn’t even close properly, detracting significantly from the bathroom’s appeal and functionality. Our first order of business, therefore, was its complete removal, along with the outdated faucets and light fixtures. So, yes, there was a *little* bit of demolition involved, but it was targeted and impactful. Robert, our resident muscle, tackled this task with a mix of concentration and perhaps a hint of apprehension – it’s hard to tell if that’s his excited face or scared face in the photo, or perhaps a delightful blend of both! Ha!

As with any ambitious DIY project, especially under such a tight timeline, we encountered numerous unforeseen challenges. Projects went awry, and we were constantly in problem-solving mode. Yet, I couldn’t have wished for a better team. It was a weekend filled with incredible “girl power,” ably supported by Robert’s unwavering strength and good humor. Poor Robert certainly got a significant workout over those two days, surrounded by five women bustling with energy and ideas. Despite the stress, the hard work, and the occasional hiccup, our collective spirit remained high, punctuated by plenty of laughter and camaraderie.
Each team member played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life:
- Nina, with her meticulous touch, became our cabinet painting pro, ensuring a flawless finish.

- Rachel, displaying incredible determination while eight months pregnant, not only built a beautiful barn door from scratch but also expertly rigged its tracks. Her dedication was truly inspiring.

- Jenna took on hardware duty, expertly installing new light fixtures, crafting an elegant mirror frame, and fitting cabinet pulls, bringing precision to every detail.

- April was our unsung hero, meticulously painting walls, handling countless touch-ups, and making frantic supply runs across San Marcos to gather the myriad items we constantly needed. It was such a whirlwind that I regret not capturing a picture of her in action!
As for myself, I bounced between various tasks, taking on every odd job I could find. This included, rather precariously, balancing on a bathtub to wrestle with the installation of a new chandelier. Every project, big or small, saw multiple hands pitching in, reflecting the true spirit of collaboration. The moment everything finally came together was an exhilarating rush, followed by an immense sense of relief and satisfaction.

The Grand Reveal: A Modern Farmhouse Oasis
So, do you remember that undeniably basic bathroom we started with? The one that was functional but utterly devoid of personality and style? Here it is again, a stark reminder of its original state:

For the entire weekend, Bethany and Levi graciously stayed out of their master bedroom and bathroom, preserving the element of surprise for the grand reveal. Witnessing their reactions was, without a doubt, the most rewarding part of the entire experience. Their joy and gratitude were palpable, and their genuine excitement made every challenging moment worthwhile. They truly are the sweetest couple, and we couldn’t have asked for more welcoming and appreciative hosts.

Thoughtful Upgrades: Key Elements of the Bathroom Transformation
Every design choice, every new fixture, and every splash of color was carefully considered to create a cohesive and calming modern farmhouse aesthetic. Here’s a closer look at the elements that brought this vision to life:
The Shower Door: A Clear Upgrade
The most glaring issue in the original bathroom was undoubtedly the cloudy, rusted shower door. Replacing it made an immediate and dramatic difference, instantly brightening and opening up the space. We opted for a new shower door with an oil-rubbed bronze finish, which provides a sophisticated contrast against the lighter wall tones and adds a touch of classic charm, perfectly fitting the modern farmhouse style.

To further elevate the showering experience, we installed a larger, more luxurious shower head. This simple upgrade transformed the daily routine into a more spa-like, invigorating moment, contributing to the serene environment Bethany desired.

The Lighting: A Blend of Glam and Industrial
Lighting plays a pivotal role in setting the mood of any room. Above their tub, we hung a stunning chandelier that masterfully blends glam and industrial elements. Its elegant yet robust design strikes a perfect balance, introducing a touch of feminine charm without overpowering the masculine notes, contributing to a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

We also replaced the old Hollywood-style vanity lights with modern, seeded glass bronze fixtures. These not only provide excellent illumination but also enhance the room’s character with their charming, vintage-inspired design, perfectly aligning with the farmhouse aesthetic.

The Colors: A Palette of Calm and Contrast
To infuse the bathroom with much-needed color and depth, we chose a serene palette. The vanity cabinets were painted in Sherwin Williams Slate Tile, a gorgeous deep blue-gray that I’ve since fallen in love with and used in my own laundry room. This color provides a sophisticated anchor for the room’s design.
For the walls, we selected Sherwin Williams Gray Screen, a light gray-blue that envelops the room in a calming mood. This soft hue creates a tranquil backdrop, making the bathroom feel more expansive and peaceful. To tie into the bronze finishes and add an industrial edge, we replaced the old cabinet pulls with sleek, modern ones in a matching bronze finish, creating a cohesive and stylish look.

Small Changes, Big Impact: Smart and Budget-Friendly Updates
Not every transformation requires a complete overhaul. Sometimes, it’s the small, strategic changes that yield the most significant impact. We chose to keep the existing builder-grade mirror, transforming it by framing it out with pine boards stained in Minwax Dark Walnut. This simple DIY added a rustic touch and instantly elevated the mirror from basic to bespoke, creating a focal point above the vanity.
To refresh the tile floor without the expense and time of retiling, we painted the grout with Valspar Duramax paint in the color Du Jour. This quick and simple solution dramatically brightened the floor, giving it a clean, updated look that complements the new color scheme. These clever modifications prove that big style can be achieved with smart, smaller-scale projects.

Adding Functionality: The Barn Door Solution
The “water closet” in the original bathroom was a misnomer, as it completely lacked a door, offering no privacy whatsoever. To remedy this, Rachel masterfully built a barn door from scratch, designed to perfectly fit the expansive 9-foot opening. We then rigged a robust header for a sliding barn door track, instantly making this corner of the bathroom more private and functional. This addition was not just practical; it also introduced a significant architectural feature and a dose of rustic elegance.

To further optimize traffic flow and prevent the original bedroom door from clashing with the newly installed barn door, we opted for an unfinished barn door kit. This was stained with Minwax Weathered Oak, then sealed with polyurethane to protect it from moisture, ensuring longevity in a bathroom environment. Hung on a sliding track, this door added gorgeous texture and visual interest, proving to be both stunning and exceptionally functional.

The Faucets: Elegant Curves for a Feminine Touch
Complementing the new vanity lights and hardware, we replaced the sink faucets with curvier, bronze ones. These elegant fixtures introduced a softer, more feminine aesthetic to their existing white cultured countertop, creating a sophisticated and balanced look that harmonizes with the overall design. The bronze finish ties in perfectly with the other metal accents throughout the room, creating a cohesive and polished feel.

Adding Art: Softness and Balance
To provide a crucial contrast to the rugged wood and dark metal elements, we introduced softness through carefully selected art. A set of botanical prints was hung, perfectly balancing the frosted window and filling what was once an awkward blank wall. These prints added a touch of nature and delicate beauty, contributing to the calming ambiance.

Another beautiful blue botanical print was strategically placed beside their vanity, offering a modern spin on classic farmhouse art and further enhancing the room’s serene, nature-inspired feel.

Storage, Storage, Storage: Enhancing Functionality
A truly functional bathroom requires ample and intelligent storage solutions. We integrated various organizational elements to make Bethany and Levi’s bathroom super functional. This included convenient wall hooks placed right beside the shower door, offering a practical spot for towels or robes.

In the water closet, we removed the existing cabinet doors, transforming it into open shelving. These shelves were then filled with charming apothecary jars and woven baskets, perfect for neatly organizing toiletries and adding a decorative touch. We painted the back of this cabinet the same Sherwin Williams Slate Tile as the vanity cabinets, creating visual depth and seamlessly tying this area into the room’s overall color scheme.

Natural Elements: Bringing the Room to Life
The final, magical touch was the incorporation of natural elements. Once we strategically placed faux succulents and delicate silk flowers, the entire room truly sprung to life. Plants possess an incredible power to instantly add freshness, vibrancy, and a sense of calm to any space. By carefully integrating a variety of natural textures – lush greenery, warm wood tones, rustic woven baskets, delicate glass accents, and light, airy textiles – the bathroom blossomed with character and charm. These elements create an inviting, organic feel, transforming a sterile builder-grade space into a lively and welcoming sanctuary.

Reflections on a Rewarding 48-Hour DIY Bathroom Transformation
This 48-hour bathroom makeover was undoubtedly one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever undertaken. The tight timeline, combined with the usual unexpected hurdles of any renovation, certainly tested our skills and our patience. However, every single ounce of hard work, every problem solved, and every small victory along the way was profoundly worth it. The satisfaction of seeing the transformation unfold, piece by piece, was immense.
I feel incredibly blessed to have been a part of such a meaningful project, and I am absolutely thrilled with how every detail of the bathroom turned out. But beyond the aesthetics, my greatest joy comes from knowing that Bethany and Levi love their new space just as much as we do. They are such a deserving couple, and it warms my heart to know they now have a beautiful, calm sanctuary where they can unwind, recharge, and continue to inspire and bless others with their talents.
This entire experience stands as powerful proof that even the most basic, builder-grade space can be imbued with character, style, and immense personality. All it takes is a healthy dose of hard work, a sprinkle of imagination, and, most importantly, the incredible power of good old-fashioned teamwork. This project was a testament to what can be achieved when passionate people come together with a shared vision, turning a dream into a stunning reality.
