Transforming IKEA Liatorp Cabinets: A Stunning Navy Blue Makeover for Your Home Office (Featuring Hale Navy!)
There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of an IKEA furniture makeover, especially when it breathes new life into a functional piece and makes a statement in a room. While I certainly miss the joy of leisurely navigating the expansive aisles of IKEA, the sheer delight of a successful DIY project makes up for it. This particular project began when securing crucial storage for our home office became a priority. Back in April, with IKEA stores’ reopening dates uncertain, we made the practical decision to invest $100 in delivery for two IKEA Liatorp cabinets.
Looking back, there are absolutely zero regrets about that decision. Even with the delivery fee, these cabinets offered an unparalleled combination of affordability and perfect fit for our designated office space, outshining all other storage options I had explored. They provided the ideal foundation for a custom look that would truly elevate the room.

Mastering the Art of Painting Laminate IKEA Furniture for Lasting Beauty
Painting IKEA furniture, especially pieces with a slick laminate finish, often comes with a common challenge: paint peeling. However, with the right method and high-quality products, achieving a durable, professional-looking finish is entirely possible. I’ve shared my tried-and-true approach previously, and for good reason—it guarantees longevity and prevents the dreaded peel. This technique is essential for anyone looking to personalize their IKEA pieces and ensure their hard work stands the test of time. Skipping crucial preparation steps will inevitably lead to frustration and a subpar finish, making proper adherence to the process paramount.
For glass storage cabinets, or any furniture featuring glass panels, I have an indispensable tip: invest in a can of Masking Liquid. This product is an absolute game-changer and worth every single penny. It simplifies the process of achieving crisp, clean lines around glass, saving immense time and frustration compared to traditional painter’s tape methods. Trust me on this; once you try it, you’ll never go back to taping off glass by hand.

The Essential Steps for a Flawless Finish:
- Deglossing for Adhesion: The first critical step is to thoroughly wipe down the entire laminate surface with a Liquid Deglosser. This powerful solution effectively removes any factory finish, grime, or oils, creating a microscopic etch that allows paint and primer to grip firmly onto the otherwise slick laminate. Skipping this step is a common mistake that leads to paint failure, as the surface won’t have the necessary tooth for adhesion.
- Precise Glass Protection with Masking Liquid: After deglossing, I meticulously brushed on the Masking Liquid onto the glass panels of the cabinet. This liquid forms a protective film that is easily peeled away once the painting is complete, leaving behind perfectly clean glass edges. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding to the next step to ensure optimal protection.
- Priming for Perfection: The secret weapon for painting laminate is a high-quality bonding primer. I applied a crucial coat of KILZ Adhesion Primer. This particular primer is specifically formulated to stick to challenging surfaces like laminate, ensuring that your chosen topcoat has a strong, durable foundation. It’s the ultimate trick to preventing chipping and peeling, providing an ultra-strong bond that regular primers simply cannot match on such surfaces.
Choosing the Ideal Topcoat for Durability and Beauty:
When it comes to the topcoat, I have a clear preference for furniture that requires a hard, resilient finish but also offers the flexibility of custom color matching. For these IKEA Liatorp cabinets, Benjamin Moore Advance paint was the perfect choice. This alkyd-based paint cures to a furniture-like finish that is exceptionally durable, washable, and smooth, ideal for high-traffic pieces. Its self-leveling properties also contribute to a brush-stroke-free appearance, a professional touch for any DIY project.
Alternatively, if you’re comfortable selecting from a curated collection of colors and appreciate a simpler application process, Fusion Mineral Paint is another favorite of mine. It’s renowned for its built-in topcoat, which means no extra sealing is required, making it incredibly user-friendly for various furniture projects.
After perfecting the prep and priming, the fun part began: selecting the perfect shade of blue. I sampled a myriad of blue tones, meticulously testing them against our office lighting and existing decor to ensure the ideal match. This process, though extensive, is vital for achieving the desired aesthetic and avoiding future regrets about color choice.

The Enduring Appeal of Benjamin Moore Hale Navy: A Timeless Choice
After careful consideration and numerous swatches, I ultimately landed on Benjamin Moore Hale Navy. And let me tell you, this color truly lives up to its reputation as one of the best navy paint colors of all time! Hale Navy is a sophisticated, deeply saturated shade that brings an undeniable richness and depth to any space without feeling overwhelming. It possesses a beautiful balance of cool and warm undertones, allowing it to seamlessly complement a wide range of color palettes and decor styles.
In our home office, Hale Navy provides that much-needed “pop” to a predominantly neutral room, grounding the space and adding an element of classic elegance. Its versatility means it can feel both traditional and contemporary, depending on its surroundings. It’s a color that exudes confidence and calm, perfect for a productive and inspiring work environment. The transformation of the white IKEA Liatorp cabinets into these deep navy beauties is simply breathtaking, proving that a little paint can completely redefine a piece of furniture and an entire room’s ambiance.

Bringing the Home Office Vision to Life: Decor and Styling
With the cabinets beautifully transformed and curing to their hard finish, it was immensely satisfying to begin stocking them with various office essentials and decorative items. The functional storage they provide is invaluable, but their aesthetic contribution is equally significant. To further enhance the room’s cozy and sophisticated atmosphere, we carefully selected and installed these elegant curtains, paired with these complementary curtain rods. The addition of this plush rug underfoot immediately added warmth, texture, and defined the seating area, tying all the elements together. Each piece was chosen to complement the deep navy of the cabinets and the light, airy walls, creating a cohesive and inviting space.
It’s truly incredible how these additions, alongside the freshly painted cabinets, have brought the room closer to its final, polished state. It finally feels like a real, almost perfectly pulled-together room! (We’ll conveniently ignore the lingering construction dust on the floor for now, but rest assured, it will be addressed soon.) The vision for a stylish yet highly functional home office is rapidly becoming a vibrant reality, piece by carefully chosen piece.

The newly painted Liatorp cabinets look absolutely perfect standing proudly alongside our unique DIY large-scale shower curtain art. This creative art piece, which we crafted just a couple of weeks prior, now harmonizes beautifully with the rich navy tones, adding a personalized and artistic touch to the office. The combination of the DIY art and the upgraded IKEA furniture showcases how thoughtful design and strategic makeovers can achieve a high-end look on a more accessible budget.
