Upcycled Window Decor Idea with Botanical Prints

But before we get to the free goodies, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. I want to highlight one of my absolute favorite “Trash to Treasure” transformations – a project that was not only incredibly simple but also yielded a stunning piece of wall decor. This DIY reclaimed window art project perfectly encapsulates the charm and satisfaction that comes from giving forgotten items a new lease on life.

The Magic of Upcycling: Turning Trash into Treasure

Upcycling, or creative reuse, is more than just a trend; it’s a sustainable way to inject unique character and history into your home decor. It’s about seeing the potential in discarded items and transforming them into something beautiful and functional. This particular project started with a pair of abandoned windows, discovered tucked away in my in-laws’ old barn, nestled quietly behind their house. These aren’t just any windows; they carry a story, a patina of age that new items simply can’t replicate. Embracing these imperfections is what makes upcycled pieces so special, offering a narrative that factory-made decor often lacks.

The thrill of discovering such a gem is incomparable. Imagine stumbling upon a forgotten relic, covered in dust, yet brimming with possibilities. That’s the essence of the “Trash to Treasure” movement – rescuing items from the landfill and elevating them into cherished home accents. This approach not only helps the environment by reducing waste but also allows you to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect your personal style. From old furniture to vintage frames, the world of upcycling is rich with opportunities for creative expression, and today, we’re diving into the delightful transformation of an old window into a captivating piece of botanical art.

Finding Your Perfect Salvage Piece: The Hunt for Reclaimed Windows

Abandoned Window Before Upcycling

The journey for this particular piece began in an idyllic, albeit slightly creepy, location: my in-laws’ old barn. It truly felt like stepping into a treasure trove of forgotten history. While the barn held several windows, I carefully selected the one that was still intact, a single pane offering a perfect canvas for my vision. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have access to such a magical barn, perpetually supplying incredible reclaimed goodies? I’d certainly spend more time rummaging through it if I weren’t quite so apprehensive about the various critters that have undoubtedly made it their home. Ack!

Old Barn, Source of Reclaimed Materials

For those of you without a magical barn at your disposal, fear not! The world is full of opportunities to find similar treasures. Consider exploring local flea markets, antique shops, architectural salvage yards, or even online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. These venues are goldmines for unique, vintage items that are just waiting for a creative touch. When hunting for reclaimed windows, look for interesting frame designs, unique hardware, or simply a sturdy structure that can be easily cleaned and repurposed. Don’t be afraid of a little dirt or peeling paint; these are often superficial and can be transformed with a bit of elbow grease and the right tools.

Preparing Your Vintage Window Frame for a New Life

Once I brought the selected window home, the first crucial step was to ensure its safety and cleanliness before it could be transformed into a beautiful decorative piece. Dealing with older items, especially those with paint, always necessitates a quick but important precaution: a lead paint test. This simple test provides peace of mind, confirming that you’re not introducing any harmful substances into your home. Safety first, always!

After confirming the absence of lead, the real cleaning began. The window had accumulated years of barn dust and grime, so a thorough cleaning was essential. I started by using a vacuum cleaner with a wand attachment to remove loose dirt, cobwebs, and any lingering debris from the frame and glass panes. Following this, I sprayed the entire frame and glass with a reliable all-purpose cleaner, allowing it to sit for a few minutes to penetrate the grime. Then, with a damp cloth, I meticulously wiped down every surface, ensuring all dirt and residue were gone. I then let it air dry completely, which is crucial for the next step.

To protect the integrity of the aged wood and prevent any further flaking or deterioration, I applied a protective sealant. A coat of matte Rustoleum spray polyurethane was perfect for this. This not only seals the wood, enhancing its durability, but also provides a beautiful matte finish that preserves the window’s rustic charm without making it look too new or glossy. Spraying in a well-ventilated area with even strokes ensures a smooth, consistent coat. This preparation ensures your upcycled window frame will last for years to come, ready to display its new artistic purpose.

Creative Display: Mounting Your Upcycled Window Art

With the window meticulously cleaned and sealed, it was ready for its new home. I decided to install it in our master bathroom, hanging it elegantly behind the tub. The contrast of the rustic window against the clean lines of the bathroom decor created a wonderfully eclectic focal point. For hanging, I relied on a trusted tool: a Hangman hanger. These hangers are my go-to for anything I need to be absolutely secure and level, providing unparalleled stability, which is especially important for a heavier item like an old window. Their design ensures that the piece sits flush against the wall, preventing any wobbling or accidental dislodging, giving me complete confidence in its placement.

Upcycled Window Art in Master Bathroom

Choosing the right location for your upcycled window art is key to maximizing its visual impact. Consider areas that could benefit from a unique architectural detail or a touch of vintage charm. Think about how natural light interacts with the piece – a window frame can beautifully frame and amplify the light in a room. While a bathroom might seem unconventional, the right protection (which we’ll discuss shortly) makes it a perfectly viable and charming spot. Other great locations include hallways, living room feature walls, or even as a headboard alternative in a bedroom. The versatility of an old window frame allows it to adapt to various design aesthetics, from farmhouse chic to eclectic bohemian, making it a truly flexible decor element.

Infusing Nature: Crafting Botanical Art for Your Window Frame

Now for the artistic touch that truly brought this piece to life! I had a cherished, thrifted copy of an Audubon Birds of America book lying around, its pages practically falling apart from age and love. From the moment I acquired it, I knew its exquisite illustrations were destined to become beautiful art. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the bird and botanical prints are simply timeless, offering a classic aesthetic that complements almost any decor style. This particular book, while no longer suitable for reading, was perfect for repurposing, giving its stunning imagery a new purpose.

The process of transforming these book pages into artwork for the window was remarkably simple. I carefully selected a few of my favorite illustrations, each one a miniature masterpiece. Then, I simply taped them directly to the inside of the window panes. The beauty of this method lies in its ease and flexibility; you can easily swap out prints whenever you desire a fresh look. The window frame itself acts as a natural matting, highlighting each botanical print within its individual pane. This creates a charming gallery effect, turning a simple salvaged item into a sophisticated display piece that celebrates the beauty of nature and vintage artistry.

Beyond vintage books, there’s a wealth of options for finding stunning botanical prints. You can explore digital archives for public domain botanical illustrations, allowing you to print them at home in various sizes. Etsy is another fantastic resource for unique printable art from independent artists. And, of course, don’t forget the free printables I’m offering later in this post, which are specifically curated for projects like this! Whether you prefer birds, flowers, or other natural elements, the world of botanical art offers endless inspiration for personalizing your reclaimed window.

Protecting Your Art: Essential Tips for Longevity

Because I chose to hang this beautiful piece in the master bathroom, an area prone to humidity and moisture, an extra step was necessary to protect the delicate book pages. If you decide to display your botanical window art in a similar high-moisture environment, I highly recommend sealing the pages. I used Scotch laminating sheets for this purpose. These self-adhesive sheets are incredibly easy to apply and create a protective barrier against moisture, ensuring your prints remain crisp and vibrant over time. Simply place your print between the sheets, smooth out any air bubbles, and trim the excess. This simple step can significantly extend the life of your artwork, preventing warping, fading, or damage from condensation.

Laminated Botanical Prints in Window Frame

Even if you’re hanging your window art in a drier space, protection can still be beneficial, especially for delicate vintage prints. A spray-on clear sealer, like a matte acrylic sealant, can offer a good level of protection against dust and UV light without altering the appearance of the prints. Alternatively, you could consider framing the prints behind glass within the window panes, though this might be a more involved process depending on your window’s structure. The goal is to preserve the beauty you’ve created, allowing it to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Beyond the Window: Expanding Your Botanical Art Collection

The versatility of botanical prints extends far beyond just a reclaimed window frame. I’ve used more sheets from my beloved Audubon book to create stunning book page botanical art for our foyer, simply by pairing them with affordable poster frames from Walmart. This project instantly brightened up the space and is absolutely perfect for adding a touch of natural elegance during spring and summer, or really, any season!
