Transform Your Space: DIY Magnetic Memo Board as Large Vintage Wall Art
Are you tired of cluttered refrigerators and unsightly cork boards detracting from your home’s aesthetic? Imagine a functional memo board that seamlessly blends into your decor, appearing as a stunning piece of large-scale vintage wall art. This easy DIY tutorial will guide you through creating a sophisticated magnetic memo board that doubles as beautiful, upscale art for your office, entryway, kitchen, or any room in your home.

The Art of Functional Decor: A Hidden Magnetic Memo Board
The concept of a memo board isn’t new, but transforming it into a piece of art? That’s where innovation meets interior design. We embarked on this creative journey while planning the conference room design for The Cottage, a women’s shelter. The goal was to infuse the space with a sense of peace and beauty, while also providing a practical area for notes and announcements. Traditional memo boards simply wouldn’t do; we envisioned something that would elevate the room, not just serve a utilitarian purpose.
After countless searches yielded no ready-made solutions that matched our vision, we decided to craft our own. The result was a stunning success: a magnetic display that, at first glance, appears to be a framed mural. Only upon closer inspection, when magnet clips are added, does its true function become apparent. This project proves that you don’t have to sacrifice style for organization. You can have both, beautifully integrated into your living or working space.

Versatile Applications for Your Custom Magnetic Art Board
This DIY wall decor project is incredibly versatile and can bring a touch of organized elegance to almost any room. It’s an ideal solution for areas that often gather clutter but need to maintain a polished look. Consider incorporating this magnetic art board in:
- Entryways: Create an organized family command center for keys, mail, school notices, and upcoming events. It keeps essential information visible without creating an eyesore right at your home’s entrance.
- Home Offices: Keep track of important deadlines, project notes, inspiring quotes, or a simple to-do list. It promotes productivity in a visually calming environment.
- Kitchens: A perfect spot for grocery lists, favorite recipes, appointment reminders, or even displaying your children’s latest artwork without piercing your cabinets.
- Playrooms & Kid’s Bedrooms: Encourage creativity by providing a dedicated space for displaying drawings, chore charts, or treasured photos, keeping their space tidy and inspiring.
We’ve personally utilized magnetic boards in various rooms to manage everything from kid’s artwork and birthday invitations to grocery lists, bills, and cherished photo snapshots. The beauty of this project lies in its customizability. You can adapt its size to perfectly fit your wall and choose any mural, poster, wallpaper, or art decal that complements your existing decor. The possibilities for personalization are endless, ensuring your magnetic art board is truly one-of-a-kind.

How to Create Your Own DIY Magnetic Art Board
Ready to transform your organizational efforts with a touch of artistic flair? This comprehensive tutorial will guide you through each step to create a stunning, functional magnetic memo board that appears as a grand piece of wall art. Follow these instructions carefully for a beautiful and long-lasting result.
Essential Supplies
- 26 Gauge Zinc-Plated Sheet Metal: This gauge is ideal for its magnetic properties and rigidity. We used two 24″x48″ sheets side-by-side to create a substantial 48″x48″ piece of statement wall art. Consider your desired final dimensions when purchasing.
- Mural / Poster / Wallpaper / Art Decal: The core of your art piece. Choose a design that inspires you and complements your decor. I opted for a scenic mural, cutting it into coordinating portions for two separate art pieces.
- Wireless Picture Light: (Optional) This accessory significantly elevates the look, lending an upscale gallery feel. It also adds practical illumination for notes.
- PVC Composite Molding: For creating a durable and attractive frame around your art. Its composite nature makes it resistant to warping.
- Construction Adhesive: Such as Liquid Nails, applied with a caulking gun. Crucial for securing multiple metal sheets together and ensuring they lie flat against the wall.
- Putty Knife: For smoothing adhesive and removing excess.
- Fine Grit Sandpaper: To scuff the metal surface, improving adhesion for primer and wallpaper.
- Kilz Original or other Oil-Based Primer: Absolutely essential if using pasted wallpaper to ensure proper adhesion to metal.
- Paint Brush: For applying primer evenly.
- Gorilla Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive: For securely attaching your chosen art material to the primed metal sheet.
- Heavy Duty Work Gloves: Non-negotiable for safety when handling sharp sheet metal edges.
- Multipurpose 1 1/2″ #8 Self-Drilling Screws: For securing the metal sheets to wall studs.
Recommended Tools
- Power Drill/Driver with Bits: For pilot holes and securing screws efficiently.
- Large Level: Critical for ensuring your board is perfectly straight.
- Pencil: For marking measurements and placement.
- Tape Measure: For precise measurements of your wall and materials.
- Scissors: For cutting your mural or wallpaper.
- Wallpaper Smoother Tool: Essential for achieving a bubble-free application of your art material.
- Miter Saw: (or a hand saw and miter box) For cutting precise 45-degree angles on your molding to form a clean frame.
- Brad Nailer: (or a hammer and brad nails) For quickly and securely attaching the frame molding.

Step 1 – Mark the Placement
Accurate placement is key to a professional-looking result. Begin by using a reliable level and a pencil to precisely mark where your metal sheet(s) will be installed on the wall. For optimal support and stability, especially given the weight of sheet metal, we recommend positioning the board to align directly with wall studs. Use a stud finder to locate these structural supports.
When determining the height, a common interior design guideline for hanging artwork is to center the piece approximately 60 inches from the floor to eye level. This generally provides a comfortable viewing height and a balanced visual presentation within the room. Mark both the top and bottom edges, and the side edges if you are using multiple sheets, to ensure a perfectly level and centered installation.

Step 2 – Drill Pilot Holes
Before attempting to hang the heavy metal sheets, it’s crucial to drill pilot holes. This step prevents the metal from bending or deforming as you drive screws through it and makes the installation process significantly easier. Using your power drill, create a pilot hole at each corner of the metal sheet. If you’ve planned to secure the sheet to studs, ensure these pilot holes align with the stud locations. If securing to studs isn’t feasible, ensure your pilot holes are strategically placed where you can insert heavyweight drywall anchors, which are designed to support substantial weight without requiring a stud.

Step 3 – Secure Metal Sheets
Safety is paramount in this step. Always wear heavy-duty work gloves when handling sheet metal, as the edges can be incredibly sharp and cause serious cuts. With your pilot holes drilled and placement marked, carefully lift and align the first metal sheet with the pencil marks on your wall. Once perfectly positioned, use your power drill to drive the self-drilling screws through the pilot holes and into the wall studs, firmly securing the metal sheet. Ensure the screws are tightened enough to hold the sheet flush against the wall without over-tightening, which could warp the metal.
If your design requires multiple metal sheets to create a larger memo board, repeat this process for each subsequent sheet. Pay close attention to aligning the edges precisely where they butt up against each other. A slight gap or misalignment can become very noticeable in the final product. Having a helper for this step is highly recommended, as large metal sheets can be unwieldy and heavy to manage alone.

Step 4 – Secure Seams with Adhesive
When working with two or more metal sheets side-by-side, achieving a perfectly flush seam can be challenging. Slight imperfections or bowing away from the wall are common. To address this and ensure a smooth, unified surface, apply a line of heavy-duty construction adhesive, such as Liquid Nails, along the edges where the metal sheets meet the wall and each other. Press the metal firmly against the wall until the adhesive sets slightly. Use a putty knife and a damp rag to immediately wipe away any excess adhesive that squeezes out from the seams, creating a clean finish. Allow the adhesive to cure completely, typically a few hours, before moving on.
For an exceptionally secure and permanent installation, you could apply construction adhesive over the entire back surface of the metal sheets before screwing them to the wall. However, be aware that this is a very strong bond and would necessitate replacing drywall in the future if the board ever needed to be removed. For most applications, securing only the seams and edges is sufficient.

Step 5 – Sand Surface
The smooth, slick surface of zinc-plated metal is not ideal for paint or adhesive adhesion. To ensure your primer and subsequent art material bond effectively, gently scuff the entire surface of the metal sheets with fine-grit sandpaper. This creates microscopic abrasions that give the primer something to grip onto, promoting stronger adhesion and preventing peeling in the future. Additionally, carefully sand down any rough spots or dried adhesive residue left over from Step 4, ensuring the surface is perfectly smooth and even before priming. This meticulous preparation is crucial for a flawless final finish.

Step 6 – Prime
This step is absolutely critical if you plan to use a pre-pasted or paste-the-wall mural or wallpaper. Metal surfaces are non-porous, making it difficult for water-based pastes to adhere properly without a barrier. An oil-based primer, such as Kilz Original, creates an ideal bonding surface. Brush on one even coat of the oil-based primer across the entire sanded metal surface. Oil-based primers tend to dry much faster than water-based alternatives, so you won’t have long to wait. Ensure adequate ventilation during application due to the fumes.
If your chosen art material is a peel-and-stick wallpaper or a self-adhesive art decal, you can skip this priming step entirely. These materials are designed with their own strong adhesive backings that adhere well to smooth, clean metal surfaces without additional primer. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific preparation requirements for your chosen material.

Step 7 – Cut Mural to Size
Careful measurement and cutting are crucial for a polished final look. Begin by accurately measuring the exact dimensions of your secured metal sheet(s). Then, subtract approximately one inch from both the width and the height of your total measurement. This intentional reduction will create a small, exposed border of metal around the perimeter, which will later be covered by your frame molding, ensuring the art doesn’t peek out from under the frame.
Using these new, slightly smaller dimensions, mark and cut your chosen mural, poster, or wallpaper panels. If your art has a specific pattern or multiple panels that need to align, pay close attention to the orientation and order of each piece to maintain the intended design continuity. Lay out your panels on a clean, flat surface to ensure everything lines up correctly before applying adhesive.

Step 8 – Apply Adhesive
With your mural cut and ready, it’s time to apply the adhesive. Using Gorilla Heavy Duty Spray Adhesive, apply a generous, even layer to the primed metal sheet(s). Work in sections if your board is very large, to ensure the adhesive doesn’t dry before you can apply the mural. Hold the can about 6-8 inches from the surface and use sweeping motions to achieve uniform coverage. Be sure to cover the entire area where the mural panel will be placed, paying extra attention to the edges and corners to prevent lifting.
Spray adhesive offers a strong bond and allows for a slight repositioning window, which can be helpful during application. However, it’s best to work quickly once the adhesive is applied. Ensure proper ventilation in your workspace during this step.

Step 9 – Adhere Mural / Poster
This step benefits greatly from a second pair of hands. Begin by carefully lining up one edge of your mural panel or poster with the corresponding edge of the metal sheet, ensuring it’s straight and properly positioned. Once aligned, gently press down that starting edge to secure it. Have your partner hold the opposite, non-pasted side of the panel lifted slightly away from the metal sheet.
Working slowly from the secured edge outwards, use a wallpaper smoothing tool to firmly press the panel into place on the metal. As you smooth, continuously push out any air bubbles that might form underneath the paper. Work systematically to prevent creases and ensure a flawless application. If your design involves multiple panels, repeat this process for each subsequent piece, paying meticulous attention to lining up patterns and ensuring seamless transitions where the panels meet. Precision here is key for the overall aesthetic of your finished art piece.

Step 10 – Attach Frame
Now it’s time to give your magnetic art board its polished, framed appearance. First, measure the exact dimensions of your wallpapered metal sheet. Transfer these measurements to your PVC composite molding. Using a miter saw, carefully cut the molding pieces at precise 45-degree angles. These angled cuts will allow the pieces to join together seamlessly, forming perfect corners, just like a traditional picture frame.
Once your molding pieces are cut, position them around the perimeter of your metal sheet, aligning the mitered corners. Use a brad nailer to secure the molding strips firmly to the wall and the edges of the metal sheet. The brad nails will be small and virtually unnoticeable. If you don’t have access to a power miter saw or a brad nailer, a simple hand saw with a miter box and a hammer with small brad nails will also work effectively, though it might take a bit more time and precision.

Step 11 – Hang Up Picture Light
While optional, adding a picture light is the “cherry on top” that elevates your DIY magnetic art board from a functional piece to a sophisticated focal point. There’s an undeniable charm and importance a picture light lends to any artwork, making it feel thoughtfully curated and museum-worthy. Beyond aesthetics, it provides a practical benefit, offering extra illumination for reading notes, announcements, or inspecting details on your displayed items.
For ease of installation and a clean look, consider a wireless picture light. If you choose this option, investing in rechargeable batteries is highly recommended to save on long-term costs and reduce waste. If hardwiring isn’t an option but you prefer a constant electrical source, a plug-in picture light with cord covers can effectively conceal the wiring, maintaining a tidy appearance. Install it centered above your frame, approximately 6-10 inches from the top edge, for optimal lighting and visual balance.

The Peel-and-Stick Shortcut: Faster DIY Wall Art
For those seeking a quicker, less intensive method, peel-and-stick wall art offers a fantastic shortcut to creating a beautiful magnetic memo board. Instead of dealing with primers and wallpaper paste, you can simply apply these self-adhesive decals directly to your metal sheet. This eliminates several steps, making the project significantly faster and less messy.
Many peel-and-stick options are available, including stunning vintage art reproductions sourced from historical archives. These designs can instantly lend an elegant or whimsical touch to your memo board without the commitment of traditional wallpaper. You can easily find these self-adhesive stickers online or in specialty decor stores.
Beyond new metal sheets, consider repurposing existing items. Do you have old farmhouse signs that no longer match your decor? Instead of discarding them, you can stick these art decals directly onto the signs to instantly transform them into a fresh, new style. This not only saves money but also promotes creative recycling, giving beloved pieces a second life as part of your unique magnetic art display.
