A few weeks ago, I asked for your input on what you’d love to see more of here on the blog. I was genuinely touched and surprised by how many of you requested more personal insights into my life. It’s easy to get caught in a cycle of “design, DIY, craft, repeat,” and sometimes I forget to step back and share the moments that truly shape us beyond the projects. It turns out, you’re not just here for the tutorials; you’re here for the journey, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share a significant part of mine today.
Many of you pointed out that while I’d hinted at our wedding in previous posts, I had never actually shared the photos. What?! How did I let such a fundamental piece of my story slip through the cracks? Today, that changes.

Even though we’re currently deep into autumn, and a spring wedding might seem out of season, this story is timeless. I didn’t want to delay sharing it any longer. Plus, with our latest bathroom makeover now beautifully complete (and I’m still pinching myself!), I’m eagerly preparing some exciting details about our next room transformation, which I can’t wait to reveal next week. But first, let’s travel back in time to April 23, 2011, and the day Robert and I said “I do.”
Our Vintage Lakeside Wedding: A Heartfelt DIY Celebration
Our Journey to “I Do”: A Love Story Rooted in Friendship
For those new to our little corner of the internet, Robert and my backstory is quite a tale, and you can delve into all the details here and here. But in essence, our journey began simply, built on a foundation of genuine friendship. We often say that God truly knew what He was doing when He brought my best friend into my life and destined him to be my husband.
It was during the extensive year-long wedding planning process that I first discovered and fell head over heels for rustic and vintage decor. This passion, unknowingly sparked by our wedding preparations, would later blossom into a significant part of what this blog is all about today. Our special day was celebrated on April 23, 2011, and it was everything we dreamed of, even with its perfectly imperfect moments.
The Morning Reality: Embracing the Unforeseen
Looking back, I wish I could tell you that on the morning of our wedding, I awoke feeling completely serene and flawlessly radiant, like something out of a magazine. You know, those picture-perfect bridal moments captured in soft focus:

Or perhaps like this, gazing thoughtfully into the distance, utterly composed:

Or even this, radiating pure, unadulterated joy without a care in the world:

But honestly, y’all, reality hit a little differently. Thanks to an incredibly lively nightclub adjacent to my hotel room, I managed a grand total of three hours of sleep. And just to add a little extra drama, I was greeted by the most colossal pimple I had ever seen. It was truly a moment of “Are you kidding me?!” for any bride-to-be.

However, as my feet hit the floor that pivotal morning, a profound thought solidified in my mind. I told myself, “Self, something will undoubtedly go wrong today. But by the end of it all, as long as you are married to your best friend, Robert, every other little imperfection or hiccup simply won’t matter.” This mantra carried me through the day, a constant reminder of what truly counted amidst the joyful chaos.
A Truly Personalized Celebration: Our DIY Wedding Journey
During our year-long engagement, a charming bird theme organically emerged and quickly became central to our wedding aesthetic. My mom and I enthusiastically embraced the challenge, diving headfirst into countless DIY projects. We crafted almost everything imaginable: intricate birdcage centerpieces that graced each table, the personalized invitations that set the tone for our guests, unique table numbers, and a significant portion of the overall venue decor. It was a true labor of love, infusing every detail with our personal touch and creative spirit.

For elements beyond our crafting capabilities, we were incredibly fortunate to have a wonderful network of friends and family who eagerly lent their talents. They assisted with everything from our beautiful wedding cake to the picturesque ceremony arch, and even the live music for both the ceremony and reception. This collective effort truly made our wedding feel like a community celebration, a testament to the love and support surrounding us.

One particularly cherished detail was our guestbook, a unique creation hand-painted by a colleague friend. It featured a beautiful tree design, inviting all our guests to leave their thumbprints as leaves, transforming it into a vibrant, living piece of art filled with memories.

Adding another layer of personal significance, Robert’s father, with his incredible talent, hand-carved and meticulously painted our wedding cake topper. These bespoke elements not only saved on our budget but also made our wedding profoundly intimate and reflective of our families’ love and dedication.

In a sweet nod to my past, I chose wedding shoes reminiscent of my ballet dancing days. They felt both elegant and deeply personal, connecting my present joy to cherished memories.

To further assist with our wedding budget, I made a resourceful decision to purchase my wedding dress pre-owned, acquiring a stunning gown at half its original price. It was a beautiful dress that felt incredibly special, proving that dream weddings don’t always require breaking the bank.

My wonderful mother-in-law contributed her exceptional sewing skills, creating my garter from delicate lace remnants salvaged from both her own and my mother’s wedding dresses. It was a deeply meaningful “something old,” weaving our family histories together in a beautiful, tangible way.

From Chaos to Calm: The Bridal Suite Experience
The first half of our wedding day was, to put it mildly, an adventure! It involved me, the flustered bride, driving five bridesmaids from downtown Charlotte to my hometown, a good 45 minutes away. And yes, you guessed it, I managed to get lost not once, but three times! Who, indeed, let the stressed-out bride take the wheel? Yet, through a combination of sheer will, good humor, and perhaps a guardian angel, we survived the journey and arrived at our destination, ready for the magic to unfold.
Once settled, the six of us, along with my mom, mother-in-law, and grandmother, embarked on the quintessential bridal suite experience. We got our hair styled, sipped refreshing mimosas, and enjoyed a hearty breakfast together. It was a precious time filled with laughter, a few happy tears, and more laughter, creating a beautiful bond as we prepared for the significant moments ahead. By the time we arrived at our breathtaking wedding venue, any lingering nerves had vanished, replaced by an overwhelming sense of excitement and eagerness to “do this thing” – to finally become husband and wife.

Together, we all applied our makeup, sharing tips and touch-ups, before my mom and mother-in-law helped me into my voluminous gown. It was a collective effort, a moment of intimate support and shared joy.

The dress, a masterpiece of lace and layers, weighed a ton, but in that moment, I had never felt more radiant or beautiful in my entire life. It was a feeling of pure bridal bliss, a culmination of all the planning and anticipation.

Our incredible photographers, Brandywine Photography and Cassie Leigh Photography, did an absolutely spectacular job of capturing every precious moment, big and small, throughout the day. This particular shot of my mom, who is truly my best friend, perfectly encapsulates the warmth and love we shared.

We also made sure to capture a unique four-generation ring shot, a truly special photograph featuring the hand of my sweet 94-year-old great-grandmother at the very bottom, symbolizing the enduring legacy of love and family.

And of course, there were countless more pictures with my wonderful bridesmaids. These five incredible women and I shared so much joy and laughter throughout the entire day, creating memories that I will forever cherish.

Anticipation and Laughter: Robert’s Side of the Story
Meanwhile, while I was navigating bridal suite activities, here’s a glimpse of what Robert was up to, undoubtedly causing a bit of playful mischief, as is his nature. There’s truly no one who makes me laugh quite like he does.

Despite his playful demeanor, he maintained a remarkably cool and collected presence, ready for the biggest moment of our lives.

The Ceremony: A Sacred Union Under the Spring Sky
Finally, the moment arrived. As the music began to play, my bridesmaids gracefully departed the bridal room, taking their places. The photographers positioned themselves near the altar, and for a few precious minutes, I found myself utterly alone, waiting to step outside and meet my dad at the aisle. This solitary moment, suspended in time, is still incredibly vivid in my mind.
I closed my eyes and offered a heartfelt prayer to God, overflowing with gratitude for allowing me to marry my best friend. I prayed for a long, happy life together, but more importantly, I asked that we would always honor Him throughout our marriage – to remain forgiving, trusting, and loyal to one another. I firmly believe that with Him at the center of our union, no challenge or obstacle that comes our way could ever truly break us. It was a moment of deep spiritual connection and commitment.

Stepping outside to embrace my dad, I was met with the most perfect spring day imaginable. The air was filled with the sweet melodies of chirping birds, the sky was a brilliant, endless blue, and there, at the end of the aisle, was Robert, smiling up at me. For those few minutes, my world narrowed to just him, and everything else faded into a beautiful, joyful blur. It was pure magic.

Just as emotions threatened to overwhelm me, my dad leaned in and whispered, “I’m not wearing underwear.” His perfectly timed, utterly absurd joke instantly broke the tension and made me burst out laughing, effectively saving me from a tearful walk down the aisle. Well done, Dad, well done.

And then there was Robert’s expression – a genuine twinkle in his eye that I’ll never forget. He might insist he didn’t cry, but I had a front-row seat to a story that told a slightly different, more emotional tale. It was a beautiful sight.

We exchanged our vows – mine perhaps a little squeakier than anticipated, but heartfelt nonetheless. And in our typically endearing fashion, we continued to make “googly eyes” at each other, a silent conversation of love and anticipation passing between us.

Then came a little unexpected twist: we discovered Robert’s ring was a bit too snug, threatening to cut off circulation to his finger! In a charming, improvised solution, he sported a rather dapper pinky ring for the rest of the day, a quirky detail that only added to the unique story of our wedding.

We then sealed our vows with a kiss, a moment I had dreamt of, solidifying our commitment under the watchful eyes of our loved ones.

…and, in true Robert and me fashion, a bit of air guitar! Though, we saved this rockstar pose for our “formal” pictures, a fun and spontaneous detail that perfectly captured our personalities.

After the ceremony, we enjoyed sweet tea and shared copious laughs with our amazing bridal party. I distinctly remember thinking, “There’s no way this day can get any better.” But, as it turned out, it absolutely could!

Then, with spirits high and hearts full, we all boarded our vintage trolley, transforming the ride into one last photo-party-before-the-party, a joyous prelude to the reception awaiting us.

The Reception: Dancing, Laughter, and Cherished Connections
Upon arriving at the reception hall, we paused for a moment of heartfelt prayer, then indulged in a delicious meal and shared countless hugs with so many cherished loved ones that I honestly lost track. The atmosphere was simply brimming with happiness and connection.

Then, it was time to hit the dance floor! Robert and I had even taken a couple of dance lessons – purely for fun – to prepare for our first dance as husband and wife. Our chosen song was “Marry Me” by Train, whose lyrics resonated deeply with our own love story. I had been his waitress at a restaurant, we started talking, and somehow, we simply never stopped. The rest, as they say, is history, and dancing to that song felt like a perfect encapsulation of our beginning.

The energy throughout the reception was absolutely infectious. Not a single soul remained in their seat the entire night! Even my incredible 94-year-old great-grandmother, in her wheelchair, took a spirited spin around the dance floor, a testament to the joy and celebratory spirit filling the room.

Our family, I can proudly say, definitely knows how to “bust a move” when the music starts playing!

A little bit softer now, as the night progressed, we truly cherished every moment on the dance floor.

We closed out the unforgettable night with an enthusiastic rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

And of course, that meant more air guitar! Because, let’s be real, it’s practically a physical impossibility to listen to Journey and *not* passionately play air guitar while singing off-key at the top of your lungs. It was the perfect, high-energy ending to a perfect day.

During that final dance, I distinctly remember consciously trying to hold onto every single second, wishing I could freeze time and prevent the party from ever ending. It was a feeling of pure, unadulterated happiness.

But then, a comforting thought washed over me: every day is a party when this incredible guy is around. (Side note for future brides: be warned, birdseed sticks to sweaty faces like glitter sticks to glue – a humorous, albeit slightly messy, exit tradition!) Our grand exit under a shower of birdseed was the perfect, memorable conclusion.

Beyond the Wedding Day: The True Meaning of “Best Friend”
As the day drew to a close, my mind circled back to the promise I had made to myself that morning: “Something will go wrong today, but by the end of the day, as long as you’re married to your best friend, the rest of it doesn’t matter.” This simple yet profound realization has become a cornerstone of our marriage.
The wedding day, as magical as it was, isn’t the hardest part. The true test, and the most beautiful journey, is marriage itself. In every season of our life together, whatever obstacles we face, whatever challenges we endure – big or small – something will inevitably “go wrong.” Life is messy, and relationships require continuous effort. But at the end of every single day, after every disagreement, through every difficult decision, as long as I am married to my best friend, Robert, the rest truly doesn’t matter. His partnership, his understanding, and his unwavering presence make every challenge surmountable.

If we could navigate living with my parents for nearly two years when we were completely broke, just starting our life together, and if we can still tackle demanding home improvement projects with genuine smiles on our faces, it’s clear we must be doing something right. And perhaps the most invaluable lesson we’ve learned: if an argument ever starts to brew, the quickest, most effective cure is always a good, hearty laugh shared between us. Laughter truly is the best medicine for any marital hiccup.
P.S. A massive shoutout and heartfelt thank you once again to Brandywine Photography and Cassie Leigh Photography for being our incredible paparazzi for the day. They were absolutely amazing at capturing every single moment with such artistry and emotion! If you’re planning a wedding or any special event in the Carolinas, I cannot recommend them highly enough. Their talent and professionalism are truly exceptional.
