Essential Nursery Organization Zones

1. The Indispensable Hamper for Baby Laundry
A good hamper is more than just a place to toss dirty clothes; it’s a critical component of nursery organization. We chose a charming metal hamper with a key feature: a removable, washable liner. This design is incredibly practical, making laundry day much easier. Furthermore, the lid is essential for containing those notorious “baby smells” that can quickly permeate a room. As babies grow and their adventures become messier, a lidded hamper becomes even more vital for maintaining a fresh and clean nursery environment.

2. Clever Small Item Storage: Canisters and Baskets
When it comes to organizing the myriad of tiny baby items, thinking outside the box can yield fantastic results. We repurposed ceramic and glass lidded canisters, typically found in kitchenware sections, for nursery storage. These are perfect for keeping small essentials tidy and easily accessible, preventing them from getting lost in larger drawers.

The largest canister is ideal for collecting all of Regan’s adorable headbands and bows, keeping them organized and free from dust. Smaller canisters are perfect for storing pacifiers and paci clips in a sanitary manner, and even for Q-tips, which are surprisingly handy for delicate cleaning tasks.

3. The Versatile Tiered Fruit Basket
Another excellent hack from the kitchenware aisle is the tiered basket. Its multiple levels make it perfect for holding items you need frequently during diaper changes. We use ours to store Wubbanubs, soft washcloths, and various “grabby toys” – essential distractions for keeping a baby entertained while you change their diaper. Additionally, two elegant soap dispensers within the basket hold hand sanitizer and baby lotion, keeping everything within arm’s reach for hygiene and comfort.

Optimizing the Nursery Dresser: Your Daily Hub
The dresser often serves as the central command station for daily baby care. For Regan’s room, we opted for a new IKEA Hemnes dresser, specifically chosen for its excellent organizational potential and compatibility with various drawer inserts. This decision proved invaluable for creating a highly systematic storage system.

4. Dresser Drawer #1: Diapering & Health Essentials
The top drawer is reserved for immediate diapering and health necessities. For those exploring cloth diapering, this drawer is perfect for cloth diaper liners, making them easily accessible during changes. All of Regan’s essential medicines, diaper cream, thermometer, and aspirator are also stored here. Keeping these items in a high drawer helps keep them out of reach as she grows. A container of disposable wipes is also on hand for quick cleanings, complementing our moistened cloth diaper wipes, which we keep in a dispenser right on the changing table for convenience.

5. Dresser Drawer #2: Cloth Diaper Covers
Dedicated to cloth diapering, this drawer exclusively holds all our cloth diaper covers. With roughly 30 covers, which is a recommended quantity for a full cloth diapering system, having a specific, organized space for them is crucial. This keeps them tidy, separated, and ready for use, simplifying the daily routine and avoiding any last-minute searches.

6. Dresser Drawer #3: Disposable Diapers & Accessories
Even with cloth diapering, it’s wise to keep a small stash of disposable diapers. This drawer holds a few for situations where grandparents or babysitters might prefer them, or for travel. The small IKEA organizational insert within this drawer is perfect for keeping tiny items like socks and mittens neatly separated and easy to find, preventing them from getting lost amidst larger items.

7. Dresser Drawer #4: Feeding & Headwear
This drawer is dedicated to frequently used items for feeding and dressing. It neatly stores folded burp cloths, which are indispensable during and after feeding times, along with various bibs for different stages of eating. An assortment of hats, from newborn beanies to sun hats, also finds its home here, categorized for easy selection based on need.

8. Dresser Drawer #5: Newborn Essentials & Swaddles
The early months rely heavily on swaddle blankets, so this drawer is designed to keep them compact and accessible. All of Regan’s swaddle blankets are rolled up neatly, making them easy to grab, especially during those sleepy nighttime changes. This drawer also houses all newborn and 0-3 month sizes of onesies, footie pajamas, and sweet pea gowns, ensuring her smallest clothes are always within reach.

9. Dresser Drawer #6: 3-6 Month Clothing
As babies grow quickly, having clothes sized up and ready is key. This drawer is designated for 3-6 month sized pajamas, onesies, and pants. Organizing clothes by size in separate drawers helps prevent clutter and makes it simple to transition to the next size as your baby grows, ensuring you’re always prepared.

10. Dresser Drawer #7: 6-9 Month Clothing & Comfort Items
Continuing the size-based organization, this drawer holds 6-9 month size clothes. Additionally, it’s a great spot for a few security blankets that might come in handy for comfort or play. Keeping these items organized ensures that as your baby reaches new milestones, their wardrobe is ready and waiting.

11. Dresser Drawer #8: Larger Sizes & Bulk Supplies
The largest drawer accommodates 9-12 month clothes, along with bulkier or less frequently used items. This includes bath wash, spare bottles of lotion, changing pad protectors, extra Boppy covers, travel wet bags, and extra washable wet bags for storing cloth diapers between washes. Boogie wipes and a full grooming kit also reside here, making this drawer a comprehensive catch-all for various baby care needs.

Maximizing Space: The Organized Nursery Closet
Beyond the dresser, the nursery closet offers invaluable vertical storage. We transformed our closet by removing old wire shelving and installing sturdy solid shelves, creating dedicated spaces for drawers and baskets. Adding wallpaper also serves a dual purpose: it adds a charming aesthetic and provides an extra layer of motivation to keep the space consistently tidy.

12. Closet Baskets for Future Sizes
Utilizing baskets on closet shelves is a smart way to store clothes your baby will grow into. We found these baskets at Target, perfect for holding larger sized play clothes, such as 12-month, 18-month, and 24-month sizes. This strategy prevents these items from cluttering daily-use spaces, ensuring they are neatly stored until needed. As Regan grows, these items will transition to her dresser, maintaining a seamless organization flow.

13. Books for Bedtime & Milestones
A stack of baby books on a closet shelf is not only decorative but also practical, keeping them within easy reach for nightly bedtime stories. This encourages a consistent routine and early literacy. We also keep her baby book here, making it convenient to document those precious first years as she grows, ensuring memories are preserved.

14. Closet Drawer #1: Bulk Diaper Supply
For parents who use both cloth and disposable diapers, or simply want to be prepared, a closet drawer is ideal for storing extra disposable diapers and wipes. This reserve supply is perfect for travel or for times when babysitters or grandparents are caring for your little one and might prefer the convenience of disposables over cloth.

15. Closet Drawer #2: Miscellaneous Essentials
This “catch-all” drawer is designed for those bulkier or less frequently used items that are still vital. It holds breast milk storage bags, the baby carrier, noise-canceling ear muffs for loud environments, and a selection of tummy-time toys. Consolidating these items keeps them out of the way but readily available when specific situations arise.

16. Closet Divider Tags for Seamless Organization
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to manage hanging baby clothes is through closet divider tags. We created and printed these on card stock to easily separate clothes by size. This small addition makes navigating the closet effortless, ensuring you always pick the correct size without rummaging.

Creating a Comfortable Feeding & Comfort Station
Glider Area:
The glider is a sanctuary for nursing sessions, cuddles, and rocking baby to sleep. Optimizing this area for comfort and accessibility is paramount to making these moments as peaceful as possible.

17. The Functional Side Table
A sturdy side table next to the glider is a must-have. Our accent lamp is fitted with a sleeper bulb, providing a soft, dim light that’s gentle on sleepy eyes and promotes rest for both parent and baby. Crucially, this table also hosts a Hatch sound machine, offering a selection of white noise sounds to create a soothing environment, aid sleep, and mask sudden household noises.

18. The Essential Nursing Basket
To ensure maximum comfort and convenience during feeding times, a well-stocked nursing basket is invaluable. Kept right beside the chair, this basket contains nursing pads, a couple of burp cloths, lanolin for comfort, and a bottle of water to help stay hydrated, which is vital for milk supply. Adding lavender essential oil to a diffuser nearby can also enhance relaxation for both you and your baby, making those intimate moments even more special.
This comprehensive organization tour highlights how thoughtful planning can transform a nursery into an incredibly efficient and calm space. Who knew such a tiny human being would require so many accessories and dedicated storage solutions?
