Hello everyone! I’m delighted to be back and share my December Design Team project with you. This particular junk journal is special because, much like my previous creation, it didn’t begin with a rigid theme. Instead, it was an organic process where I meticulously gathered an array of beautiful graphics and captivating ephemera from The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. As I collected these treasures, the journal’s essence gradually unfolded before me, eventually revealing its perfect title: “The Storyteller.” This journey from disparate elements to a cohesive narrative is what I find most enchanting about junk journaling.
Crafting the Heart: The Storyteller Junk Journal Cover
Let’s begin with the very first impression: the junk journal cover. For this project, I chose a sturdy vintage book as my foundation, giving it new life by covering it with a piece of linen. To impart an aged, timeworn aesthetic, I meticulously coffee-stained the linen, allowing it to dry and curl naturally, creating a beautiful texture. Before permanently adhering the linen to the book, I hand-stitched delicate vintage eyelet lace pockets onto both the front and back covers, anticipating the tiny treasures they would hold. The front cover proudly showcases a rich textile collage, featuring an antique-style stamping of the word “Storyteller” at its core, hinting at the narratives waiting to be written within.
A signature element of my journal covers is the incorporation of genuine antique embellishments, each with its own history. On “The Storyteller,” I’ve carefully placed several antique buttons, an elegant optical lens dangling playfully from a garment pin, and a fascinating watchmaker’s vial nestled into the spine. The vial itself is a miniature marvel, containing its original clock parts, and upon closer inspection, you can discern two minuscule clock hands, frozen in time. Peeking out from one of the eyelet lace pockets is a collectible bird trading card, adding a touch of natural history. Alongside it, a petite file folder bears the tender inscription “your heart and mine” on its tab, thoughtfully filled with lined paper to offer additional journaling space. And because I adore their rustic charm, a small rusty safety pin finds its place among these cherished keepsakes, completing the cover’s intricate, layered design.
Unveiling the Back: The Storyteller Junk Journal’s Rear Cover
Turning our attention to the back cover, you’ll discover another thoughtfully curated space within its lace pocket. Here, I’ve tucked away a beautiful antique cabinet card photo, generously sourced from one of The Graphics Fairy’s fantastic Antique Portraits Bundles. When printing this image, I made sure to enhance its vintage authenticity by also printing one of their antique Blank Paper Ephemera pages on the reverse side. This simple yet effective technique ensures the back is never stark white, creating a cohesive and aged look that perfectly complements the vintage portrait on the front. To further distress and unify the aesthetic, I meticulously inked all the edges, both front and back. Within this same pocket, you’ll also find a charming vintage garment tag and one of my cherished printable love letters from 1862, delicately enclosed in an aged glassine envelope, inviting curiosity and a glimpse into the past.
Architectural Beauty: Storyteller Junk Journal Edge Design Ideas
The internal structure of this journal is composed of three distinct signatures, each thoughtfully adorned with delicate lace along its edges. This not only adds a soft, romantic touch but also creates a beautiful textural experience as you flip through the pages. For the journal’s closure, I selected a luxurious sari silk ribbon. At this initial stage, it serves primarily as a decorative flourish, enhancing the journal’s aesthetic appeal with its vibrant color and flowing texture. However, should the future owner begin to fill its pages with mementos, photographs, and their own stories, this ribbon will readily transform into a functional closure, keeping all precious contents securely contained.
To enhance the user experience and facilitate easy navigation, I’ve integrated practical yet aesthetically pleasing linen tabs. A sturdy linen tab is strategically placed at the top of the very first page of each signature. These tactile markers make it effortlessly simple to locate and distinguish between the individual sections of the journal, adding both functionality and a subtle rustic charm to the overall design.
Hidden Treasures: Junk Journal Pockets and Their Contents
The interior of both the front and back covers has been thoughtfully lined with a high-quality designer cardstock, the edges of which I’ve carefully machine-stitched for added durability and a refined finish. To maximize storage and creative potential, I’ve incorporated generous pockets crafted from wide vintage lace. These pockets not only provide ample space for tucking away cherished ephemera but also add a delicate, aged aesthetic to the journal’s inner covers.
Within the front pocket, you’ll discover a striking reproduction die-cut of a beautiful lady’s hand, meticulously fussy-cut from The Graphics Fairy’s captivating Victorian Valentines Bundle. This elegant hand was printed on matte photo paper, and to ensure its antique appearance was consistent, I deliberately printed one of TGF’s antique plain ephemera pages on its reverse side. This technique is invaluable for achieving a truly authentic vintage look, preventing any jarringly stark white backsides on period images. As always, I’ve inked the front and back edges of these elements to fully complete their aged character. Accompanying the lady’s hand are several lovely leaves adorned with antique script, which serve as perfect journaling cards. A small paperclip at their base keeps them neatly fanned out and together within the pocket, ready to capture new stories.
Throughout the journal, I’ve strategically used stunning images as overlays, drawing from a rich array of bundles available exclusively through The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. These include the enchanting Birds on Branches bundle, the graceful Bohemian Butterflies bundle, and the lush floral imagery from the In the Garden bundle. Each selection adds depth, beauty, and a touch of natural wonder to the journal’s pages, enhancing the overall storytelling aesthetic.
A Scent of Nostalgia: The Unique Vanilla Aged Paper Technique
One of the most distinctive features of “The Storyteller” is the unique texture and color of its pages, achieved through my signature vanilla aged paper technique. I believe these subtle graphics create a beautiful contrast against the creamy, mellow tones of the vanilla-aged copy paper. This method was born out of serendipity and a keen eye for detail. I was inspired by a handwritten cookbook I’ve treasured for over 30 years, whose pages had naturally acquired beautiful vanilla-stained areas from decades of use. I absolutely adored the resulting look and decided to experiment with replicating it.
For this process, I use imitation vanilla, which I purchase in large gallon jugs from a restaurant supply company – a far more economical choice than real vanilla, which would be prohibitively expensive for paper aging. The beauty of aging paper with vanilla lies in its delicate outcome: it produces a lighter, softer color than coffee aging, offering a nuanced vintage aesthetic. Beyond the visual appeal, a wonderful bonus is the subtle, sweet fragrant smell it imparts to the entire journal, making the experience of holding and interacting with it truly multi-sensory and nostalgic. It’s a technique that adds both character and a charming aroma to every page.
On this particular page, I’ve created a layered composition that evokes a sense of timeless elegance. I started with one of The Graphics Fairy’s captivating Script Ephemera bundle pages as the base, its antique handwriting adding immediate historical depth. Over this, I layered a delicate dragonfly image from the enchanting Woodland Walk bundle. This time, I opted for a direct, manual layering approach: first printing the script page, then carefully printing the dragonfly image directly over the top to achieve a beautifully integrated look. I also enjoy incorporating vellum into my journals; here, it’s used as a charming flip-up element, providing hidden space for additional journaling underneath.
On the opposite page, functionality meets vintage charm. I’ve utilized a reprint of a beautiful postcard from the Vintage Postcards bundle, transforming it into a practical tuck pocket. This pocket is currently home to a collection of smaller vintage ephemera pieces, ready to be discovered and inspire further narrative. Each element on these pages is chosen to spark imagination and invite interaction, creating a truly unique storytelling experience.
The Soul of the Journal: The Storyteller Junk Journal Ephemera
The true character and inherent beauty of “The Storyteller” journal are largely owed to the meticulously curated selection of ephemera nestled within its pages. Every single Ephemera bundle piece I added to this journal hails from The Graphics Fairy’s invaluable Premium Membership site. This treasure trove of resources allowed me to select an incredibly diverse array of items, each contributing to the journal’s rich narrative tapestry. My choices included historical postcards, beautifully scripted pages, intricate botanical illustrations, charming reproduction die-cuts, and various other printable elements specially designed for members. Collectively, these exquisite items imbue the journal with its unique personality, timeless charm, and an unparalleled sense of history, inviting every viewer to delve deeper into its story.
