The thrill of discovery at a local thrift store is an experience I cherish, especially when the timing is just right. Last November, I hit the jackpot during what I affectionately call the “holiday purge season.” It’s that magical time before Christmas when everyone tidies up for guests and decks their halls, often leading to incredible finds being donated. Mark my words: the periods immediately before and after major holidays are prime times for uncovering hidden gems. Consider that a seasoned thrifter’s secret weapon!
I left that day with a car full of potential, a collection of items whose destinies were yet unknown but whose possibilities felt limitless. They eventually transformed into some of my most cherished projects: a charming Christmas village centerpiece, a clever coffee table reimagined as an ottoman, delicate “concrete” magnolias, and most recently, this set of well-loved but undeniably cute nesting tables.

Honestly, these nesting tables were in remarkably good condition when I found them. Not a single wobbly leg in sight! And the entire set cost a mere $20 – an absolute steal. The only drawback was their dated design on the tabletops, which simply didn’t align with my aesthetic vision. I knew immediately they deserved a complete transformation.
My inspiration had recently been sparked by a stunning bone inlay dresser from Anthropologie. While its intricate beauty was undeniable, its price tag of $1,298 was certainly not within my budget. This realization ignited a creative spark: could I replicate that sophisticated bone inlay look using stencils? I decided these thrifted nesting tables would be the perfect canvas for this month’s Trash to Treasure Tuesday challenge.

Let me preface this by saying I am no artist. My drawing skills typically extend to stick figures. So, if I, with my limited artistic talent, could successfully pull off this project, I assure you, anyone can! This faux bone inlay stencil technique is surprisingly forgiving and yields incredibly impressive results, proving that you don’t need a fine arts degree to create beautiful, custom furniture for your home.

Step-by-Step Guide to Faux Bone Inlay Stencil Furniture Makeover
Transforming these thrift store finds into designer-look pieces was a rewarding process. Here’s how you can achieve a similar stunning result:
1. Prepare Your Base with a Flawless Finish. My first step was to ensure the old tabletop designs were completely obscured and to provide a perfect backdrop for the intricate stencil work. I meticulously applied two coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black using a natural bristle brush. This paint not only offers exceptional coverage but also dries to a beautiful, velvety matte finish, making it an ideal canvas for the faux inlay. Allow ample drying time between coats for best adhesion and a smooth surface.

2. Strategize Your Stencil Placement. Once the black base was completely dry to the touch, it was time to introduce the Raw Silk color with the stencils. The Indian inlay stencil set typically comes with a variety of patterns – geometric, floral, and repeating motifs. Before you commit to paint, take some time to lay out your stencils on the tabletop. Experiment with different arrangements to see what best fits the dimensions and desired aesthetic of your piece. For my nesting tables, I opted for a combination: the geometric patterns formed an elegant border around the edges, while the delicate floral designs took center stage in the middle of each table. This thoughtful planning helps create a cohesive and visually appealing design.

3. Master the Stenciling Technique. Secure your first stencil firmly in place with painter’s tape to prevent any shifting during application. This is crucial for crisp lines. Next, dip just the very tip of your stencil brush into the Raw Silk paint. The key here is to use very little paint. Immediately after dipping, offload almost all the excess paint onto a paper towel until the brush feels nearly dry to the touch, carrying only a minimal amount of pigment. Then, apply the paint to the stencil using a light, dabbing motion, perpendicular to the surface. Avoid swiping or brushing, as this can force paint under the stencil and cause bleeding. Light, even dabs build up the color gradually and ensure clean edges.

4. Exercise Patience with Overlapping Patterns. As you progress and begin to overlap stencil patterns, patience is your best friend. While the “dry brush” method for stenciling means paint dries quickly, it’s always wise to wait a few minutes before placing a new stencil directly over a freshly painted area. This brief drying period significantly reduces the risk of smudges or accidental transfer of wet paint, ensuring a professional and neat finish. Rushing this step is a common mistake that can easily ruin an otherwise perfect design.

5. Achieve Clean Edges with Painter’s Tape. What if a pattern is too large for your piece, or you want a precise border? Simply use a strip of painter’s tape to define where you want the pattern to end. Apply the tape firmly along your desired edge, stencil right up to it, and then carefully remove the tape once the paint is dry enough not to smudge. This technique creates sharp, professional-looking lines and allows you to customize the stencil placement to perfectly fit any furniture piece, regardless of its size or shape.

6. Perfect Your Design with Touch-Ups. Even with the most careful stenciling, tiny imperfections can occur. A little bleed-through here, a small smudge there – it’s all part of the DIY process! Don’t fret. Once all your stenciling is complete and completely dry, grab a small artist’s brush. Dip it into your Coal Black base paint and meticulously touch up any areas where the Raw Silk paint has bled or smudged. This step is a game-changer; it cleans up the design, sharpens the contrast, and elevates your faux inlay to a truly professional standard. Take your time, and you’ll be amazed at the transformation.

7. Seal Your Masterpiece for Lasting Beauty. Your beautiful handiwork deserves protection. To ensure the painted finish withstands daily use and retains its charm for years to come, apply several thin coats of matte polycrylic. This topcoat provides a durable, non-yellowing protective layer that guards against scratches, scuffs, and moisture. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application and drying times, usually applying multiple thin coats rather than one thick one for the best results.
That’s it! The transformation is complete, and the results are simply adorable. It’s hard to believe these are the same $20 tables I found just weeks ago!

I genuinely have to lean in close and examine the paint texture to even discern that these aren’t authentic bone inlay pieces. The crisp lines and delicate patterns, combined with the contrasting black and off-white, create an illusion of depth and craftsmanship that truly mimics the high-end look. It’s a testament to the power of a well-executed stencil and quality paints.

Beyond their stunning appearance, I absolutely adore how versatile these little tables have become in our living room. We have two accent chairs that previously lacked accompanying end tables, but now these nesting beauties fit perfectly, providing convenient surfaces for drinks, books, or decorative accents. I honestly never realized how much I needed nesting tables until now! Their ability to tuck away neatly when not in use, yet expand to offer multiple surfaces, makes them incredibly practical and ideal for smaller spaces where every inch counts.

And the best part? These gorgeous tables now look like they cost a small fortune, but the total investment to create them was only about $84. Compared to the nearly $1,300 Anthropologie inspiration piece, that’s a staggering saving and a true testament to the value of DIY. It’s proof that with a little creativity and effort, you can achieve luxurious home decor on a budget.

Have you embarked on any stencil projects that filled you with immense pride? While not a technique I frequently attempt, this particular endeavor has definitely ignited a passion for stenciling within me. The transformative power and surprisingly simple execution make it an incredibly rewarding way to personalize and elevate furniture. I encourage you to give it a try – you might just catch the stenciling bug too!
