After transforming our master bathroom, invigorating the breakfast area, styling our foyer, enchanting our daughter’s room, and refreshing the hallway bathroom, it’s safe to say that I don’t stay still for long! The ink barely dried on the last room makeover reveal before my mind was already buzzing with ideas for our next big project: the master bedroom. This space, a true sanctuary, is long overdue for a personalized transformation.
For almost two years since we moved into our home, our master bedroom has been functional but far from finished. We started, as many do, with just a mattress on the floor – a humble beginning for what we envisioned as our private retreat. Slowly but surely, we added essential pieces. Robert and I saved diligently for months to purchase our bed during a Christmas sale at Ashley Furniture. The quest for the perfect nightstands was a lengthy one, finally ending with a charming pair from Nadeau. Our trusty dresser was a lucky Craigslist find. And then, as often happens in a busy household, progress stalled.

Our initial focus was primarily on the downstairs living areas, spaces frequently seen and used by guests. The master bedroom, being a more private area, felt almost like an indulgence to prioritize at the time. However, I’ve reached a point where I am incredibly eager to infuse this room with our unique style and comfort. It’s time for it to truly become our own haven, reflecting our personalities and providing the ultimate escape.

For a long time, this particular room left me stumped. If you had asked me to decorate it when we first moved in, the design would have been vastly different from the vision I’m about to share with you. This journey has been a testament to the power of discovering your personal decor style. There’s an incredible sense of empowerment that comes from finally understanding what truly resonates with you, eliminating the endless second-guessing across a million different design directions. While I’ve never formally studied interior design, our homeowning adventure has been an invaluable education in identifying and curating spaces that feel authentically “us.”

Crafting Our Modern Rustic Master Bedroom Design Plan
The initial spark for this entire master bedroom redesign actually came from a rather practical problem involving our bathroom and closet doors. Currently, our bathroom door opens directly into the shower door, often creating an awkward traffic jam. One day, Robert, with his typically astute observations, suggested, “Hey, let’s take these doors out and build sliding barn doors instead.” My heart practically skipped a beat! He knows me so well, instantly tapping into my love for rustic charm and clever space-saving solutions. Those two traditional doors you see in the ‘before’ picture below? They’re definitely on their way out!

It’s rare for Robert to voice a strong opinion on room decor, but this is, after all, *our* bedroom, and his input is invaluable. His requests for this makeover were simple yet impactful: blue/gray walls, a prominent deer mount, and a strict no-floral print fabrics rule. Absolutely no worries, darling! I’ve got this vision firmly in hand. With these key elements established, the path to a modern rustic retreat became much clearer. (Affiliate links are provided below for sources. A Detailed Breakdown of Our Bedroom Makeover Strategy:
Ready for the full reveal of our strategy? Here’s how we plan to bring our modern rustic master bedroom to life, blending comfort, style, and a touch of personal history.
1. The Plank Wall: A Focal Point
I’ll admit, I’ve developed a slight addiction to textured walls, from board and batten to shiplap. For our master bedroom, the plan is to create a stunning focal wall directly behind our bed using a DIY plank effect. I’m utterly captivated by the look Jenna from Jenna Sue Design Blog achieved (pictured below). The wall color she chose, Benjamin Moore Moonshine, is incredibly similar to the serene blue-gray hue I envision – perfectly aligning with Robert’s preference. It’s amazing what magical transformations can happen with just paint and cleverly cut plywood strips, creating an architectural interest that makes the room feel custom and cozy.

2. Reinventing The Bed
Our existing bed, while comfortable, is quite dark in tone. I’ve been deliberating a bold DIY project: brightening the wood with a lime wash and painting the fabric upholstery a lighter color. The goal is to achieve a sophisticated, lighter aesthetic, much like the elegant beds seen at Restoration Hardware. This endeavor will certainly require a bit of courage and careful planning, but the potential for a fresh, airy look that maintains its sturdy character is incredibly appealing. It’s a chance to completely transform a significant piece of furniture and integrate it seamlessly into our new design scheme without purchasing a new one.

3. Installing Stylish Barn Doors
The idea of incorporating barn doors, sparked by Robert, is a design element I’m truly excited about. I adore the color and unique design of the barn doors featured by Unskinny Boppy. We are confident in our ability to construct a pair for our bathroom and closet entrances, making this a budget-friendly DIY project. Not only will these sliding doors resolve our current traffic flow issue, but they will also introduce a significant rustic-modern architectural detail, adding character and warmth that perfectly complements our desired aesthetic. This practical solution doubles as a significant style statement.

4. Enhancing the Windows
For the windows, my aim is to maintain a sense of simplicity while infusing them with ample texture and character. We’ll start by framing them out beautifully with our signature DIY window trim, a project that always adds a custom, finished touch. To adorn them, I plan to hang crisp white Ikea curtains, similar to the ones that brought an airy feel to our breakfast area. If the budget allows, an ideal addition would be to replace our existing white blinds with natural bamboo shades. These shades would introduce a rich, organic texture and create a perfect visual balance with the wood tones of the barn doors on the opposite side of the room, adding warmth and depth.

5. Incorporating Ticking Stripes
Lately, I’ve developed a fondness for stripes, and ticking stripes, in particular, hold a classic, understated charm. I envision adding ticking stripe pillows and potentially a duvet cover to our bed. This subtle pattern will complement our crisp white linens, which are always a non-negotiable for me, creating a layered and inviting look. The delicate lines of ticking stripes offer a beautiful contrast to the rustic elements of the room, providing a touch of farmhouse elegance without being overtly feminine, perfectly balancing Robert’s preference for no florals.

6. Selecting the Perfect Rug
If there’s one home decor item that consistently presents a love/hate relationship during shopping, it’s rugs. (In fact, I once rounded up my no-brainer favorites just to have an easy reference list!) The sheer volume of choices can be overwhelming, and they are certainly not cheap. However, the transformative impact a well-chosen rug can have on a room is nothing short of immense. It took me weeks of searching and comparing to finally settle on this particular rug. While I might change my mind a dozen times before the room is truly finished (that’s just part of the process!), isn’t it absolutely stunning? And rest assured, I’ll be watching for it to go on sale like a hawk. A rug isn’t just a floor covering; it’s an anchor that defines the space, adds warmth, and brings all the elements together.

7. Upgrading the Mirror
Currently, we have a functional mirror hanging above our dresser, a relic from my college days, likely purchased for a mere $20. While it serves its purpose, it lacks the charm and character we desire for our redesigned master bedroom. I’m eager to replace it with something far more captivating, like a window mirror. A well-placed decorative mirror, especially one with an arched or window-like frame, can significantly enhance a room by reflecting light, creating the illusion of more space, and adding an architectural element. It’s a simple change that can elevate the entire aesthetic of the dresser area, turning a purely functional piece into a stylish statement.

8. Adding Faux Taxidermy
This is one of Robert’s few specific requests, and happily, it’s one I’m thrilled to embrace. Deer antlers hold a special place in my heart, stirring fond memories of our honeymoon suite. While faux taxidermy might be considered a trendy item right now (or perhaps it’s gracefully moving out of the spotlight – who can keep up with all the design gurus?), for us, it carries personal significance. It’s a nod to our shared history and an element that perfectly fits the modern rustic aesthetic we’re creating. It offers a subtle masculine touch without being overbearing, contributing to the cozy, layered feel of the room.

Our Honeymoon Inspiration: The Grand Bohemian Hotel
Our design inspiration truly began during our honeymoon. We stayed at the magnificent Grand Bohemian Hotel in Asheville, NC, during our visit to the Biltmore Estates. It was there, amidst its luxurious yet distinctly rustic ambiance, that I truly began to understand and articulate the design styles that spoke to me. Walking into our hotel room, I distinctly remember thinking, “One day, I want our master bedroom to feel exactly like this.” The blend of rich textures, natural elements, and sophisticated comfort resonated deeply, laying the groundwork for the modern rustic vision we’re pursuing today. This was our gorgeous hotel suite, a true design awakening:

And because Robert and I are nothing if not ultra-classy individuals, our immediate reaction upon entering that exquisite room was to do this:

Come on, you know you get the urge to do something similar when you walk into a beautiful hotel room!
