Welcome, autumn enthusiasts! Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of cozy charm as we embark on a delightful fall home tour. This isn’t just any tour; it’s a celebration of all things pumpkin spice, vibrant foliage, and the inviting warmth that defines the autumn season. I’m thrilled to open my home and share how we infuse every corner with simple, yet impactful, fall decor.
I’m incredibly excited to be joining my talented friend, Rachel from Maison de Pax, once again for her annual “Fall Into Home 2016 Tour.” This year, we’re showcasing our autumn aesthetics alongside 12 other exceptionally creative bloggers, promising a wealth of inspiration for your own seasonal styling endeavors.
For those visiting my corner of the internet for the first time, a heartfelt welcome! My husband Robert, our energetic three-year-old Olivia, and our beloved, slightly spoiled pup Lola, have called this our first home for two and a half wonderful years. Located in the charming suburbs of Charlotte, this builder-grade house has been a canvas for us to personalize and transform into a true reflection of our family’s style and spirit.

When it comes to fall decor, I genuinely attempt to exercise restraint. However, as many fellow autumn lovers know, pumpkins have a mysterious way of finding their way into my car! It’s as if they leap off the shelves and demand a place in our home. This year, my collection grew organically, and I’m certainly not complaining about the extra dash of seasonal cheer they bring.

Our foyer, the first impression of our home, has undergone a beautiful autumnal transformation. While I recently shared its spookier Halloween iteration, its initial fall styling was a lesson in subtle elegance. I swapped out our summer greenery for shimmering gold leaves, unique metallic artichokes, and rustic dried wheat stalks. These elements collectively create an inviting and sophisticated welcome, setting the tone for the entire house.
Rachel encouraged all participants to share their go-to decor wisdom, so I’ve compiled some of my most cherished and effective strategies for effortlessly incorporating fall touches into your existing home aesthetic. These tips are designed to be both easy on the eye and the wallet, ensuring your home feels refreshed without a complete overhaul.
- Choose Neutrals as Your Decor Base: One of the most versatile and budget-friendly decor tips is to build your foundation with neutral pieces. Think classic wooden bowls, crisp white pitchers, elegant metal lanterns, clear glass vases, and naturally woven baskets. The beauty of neutrals lies in their ability to serve as a timeless backdrop, allowing you to easily introduce seasonal pops of color throughout the year. These foundational pieces are readily available and often found at incredible prices in thrift stores, flea markets, or your favorite home goods retailers. They provide a cohesive look that effortlessly adapts to any festive theme.

A perfect example of this principle is the little wooden trough I discovered in the HomeGoods clearance aisle. Despite a broken handle, its rustic charm and an irresistible $5.00 price tag meant I simply couldn’t leave it behind. It’s now a cherished piece that grounds many of my seasonal displays.

- Opt for Faux Florals and Greenery for Lasting Beauty: While I adore the freshness of real flowers and seasonal produce, a practical approach to annual fall decorating is to invest in high-quality faux florals and greenery. Real items from nature, while beautiful, typically last only a few days or weeks at best. Artificial alternatives, however, provide continuous beauty year after year, making them incredibly cost-effective in the long run. I often scout craft stores during their 40-50% off sales in late summer when new seasonal items arrive, or look for clearance deals after Thanksgiving to stock up for the following year. Look for realistic bittersweet vines, varied leafy branches, and charming faux gourds and pumpkins to create stunning, enduring displays.

Our dining room, particularly after the makeover of our weathered oak dining table, becomes a focal point for festive gatherings. Thanksgiving, in particular, calls for an extra special table setting. This year, I experimented with repurposing grapevine wreaths as unique chargers, adding a wonderful natural texture and rustic elegance to each place setting. It’s a simple yet impactful way to elevate your holiday dining experience.

I also delved into a bit of DIY creativity by crafting these adorable cotton boll napkin rings. They add a charming, handcrafted touch to the table, and I’ll be sharing a tutorial for them very soon!

- Focus on a Thoughtful Color Palette: Before you begin decorating any room for fall, take a moment to decide on your desired color palette. Do you envision a vibrant space filled with rich oranges, reds, and deep purples, or a more serene atmosphere with muted golds, greens, and creams? You can certainly carry a consistent color scheme throughout your entire home for a harmonious flow, but I often enjoy mixing it up from room to room to create distinct moods. This intentional choice ensures your fall decor feels cohesive and polished, rather than haphazard.
In our kitchen, for instance, I leaned into a palette of soft golds and light greens, allowing the natural warmth of autumn to shine through without overwhelming the space. Since completing our kitchen makeover a few months ago, this space has become even more of a joy to cook in. Robert and I recently finished a Whole 30 challenge, a culinary boot camp that put our new kitchen to the test, and I might even share our results with you all sometime soon!

My faux rusted “vintage” scale now proudly displays a fresh haul of apples, a delicious reminder of our annual apple-picking tradition at a nearby orchard. We love stocking up on apples and cider each fall, though I have to keep a close eye on Olivia – she has a penchant for taking a single bite out of every apple in the basket! Toddler adventures, right?

While these branches are simply artificial ones from Michaels, they beautifully capture the essence of the season and ignite my eagerness for a mountain trip to witness the vibrant changing leaves firsthand. It’s still a bit early for the full autumnal spectacle here in the Carolinas, but these faux touches tide us over until nature unveils its true colors.

- Enhance Your Space with Thoughtful Place Settings and Centerpieces: When entertaining, especially during the holidays, small details can make a grand impact. Focusing on beautiful place settings and a captivating centerpiece instantly elevates any gathering. For past Thanksgivings, we’ve had the pleasure of hosting over 24 guests for a grand feast, and one of my absolute favorite preparations is always decorating the tables to make them feel truly extraordinary and welcoming for everyone.

This year, with our playroom undergoing a makeover right around Thanksgiving, I happily (and perhaps a little slyly) dodged hosting duties. Ha! However, that certainly won’t stop me from getting “table decor crazy” at my parents’ house. Decorating for the holidays is something I always eagerly anticipate, right alongside reuniting with family, enjoying the delicious food, and, of course, indulging in all those delectable desserts!

Speaking of centerpieces, my mom truly knows my taste! She found this charming old toolbox for me at an antique store earlier this year, and it has become one of my favorite vessels for seasonal arrangements when we have company. For fall, I simply filled it with three faux fall bouquets, interspersed with natural pine cones and a few plastic gourds. The combination adds a delightful blend of fresh color and varied texture, creating an instant autumnal focal point.

To further personalize our fall table, I designed these sweet little place card printables. They’re an easy way to add a thoughtful touch for your guests, and you can conveniently download them here.

- Incorporate Cherished, Sentimental Items: While store-bought decor can certainly be beautiful, nothing compares to the soul and character that sentimental pieces bring to a home. These are the items with stories, the heirlooms that connect us to our past and infuse our spaces with personal meaning. For instance, an old miner’s lamp, a treasured pass-down from my great uncle who worked in the coal mines of West Virginia, sits proudly in our living room. Similarly, a small wooden cross, meticulously cut by my dad from a beam in my great grandparents’ house, holds a place of honor. These objects are more than just decor; they are tangible memories that make our house uniquely ours.

Our living room is undoubtedly our family’s favorite retreat after a long day. Most Friday nights, you’ll find us snuggled up on the couch, enjoying a movie night together. This room is designed for comfort and connection, making it the perfect canvas for subtle yet inviting fall touches.

To help manage the everyday clutter that naturally accumulates in a well-loved living space, I consistently keep a stylish tray on our coffee table. It’s the ideal spot for corralling books, remote controls, and coasters, ensuring the space remains tidy and functional while still looking chic.

And of course, this cozy corner of our sofa is Lola’s preferred spot for her afternoon naps. Her presence truly completes the picture of a lived-in, loved home.

- Embrace Symmetry for a Balanced Look, Especially on Your Mantel: While I love to experiment with decor, one principle I often return to, especially when styling a mantel, is symmetry. My mantel decor is a constantly evolving project, as I enjoy re-imagining it with each passing season. For early fall, I typically begin with a softer, neutral color palette, gradually transitioning to more vibrant oranges and reds as the weather cools down in October and November. This gradual shift creates a beautiful evolution of seasonal warmth in the heart of our home.

Regardless of the season, my go-to formula for a beautifully styled mantel involves anchoring the display with a large, captivating focal piece at the center, such as this striking charcoal mirror. It grounds the entire arrangement and draws the eye.

To create balance and visual interest, I then add elements of varying heights on either side, such as elegant vases or rustic lanterns. The space in between is perfectly filled with a seasonal garland, weaving together the entire display with texture and natural beauty.

This year marks the first fall I’ve had the joy of decorating our mantel without the television above it, as we relocated it earlier this year. I must confess, the newfound freedom to style this space has been absolutely delightful!

Ultimately, regardless of whether your home boasts a “magazine-worthy” spread or reflects the beautiful chaos of “well-lived in” spaces, the most important thing is to love it wholeheartedly. It’s not the perfectly placed decor that truly transforms a house into a home; rather, it’s the people who fill its rooms with laughter, warmth, and love. I never want anyone to walk away from a home tour, whether it’s mine or another blogger’s, feeling as though their efforts or their home are not enough. You truly are enough, just as your home is.
Whether you’re a busy parent juggling football practices, a newlywed navigating your first home on a tight budget, or enjoying your golden years with a bit less energy for extensive DIY projects, I want you to cherish your home in its current state. If it serves as a soft landing after a challenging day, a place that rejuvenates and comforts your family, then that is its most profound purpose. Love your home for what it provides, and it will undoubtedly return that love in abundance.
Happy fall, everyone!
