Welcome to our annual Christmas home tour! This year, our holiday decorating journey has been a beautiful exploration of intentionality and the true spirit of the season. After last December’s whirlwind, which saw us deeply immersed in the final stages of our media room makeover, we embraced a more minimalist approach to Christmas decor. We focused on creating festive warmth primarily in the spaces where our family truly gathers, allowing more room for cherished moments and less for elaborate preparations.
That experience truly highlighted the beauty of doing less and appreciating quality time over an abundance of decorations. This year, we’ve carried that sentiment forward, skipping the decor in less-frequented areas like the kitchen and bedrooms. Instead, we poured our creative energy into transforming our living room, dining room, media room, and foyer into havens of holiday cheer. Our goal was to achieve a perfectly balanced aesthetic that reflects our busy lives yet still celebrates the comfort and joy of being homebodies during the most wonderful time of the year. Join us as we unveil our modern colonial Christmas home, filled with traditional charm and contemporary flair.
Embracing Holiday Cheer: Our Brick Colonial Christmas Porch
This year, the transformation of our home into a festive sanctuary was a gradual and deeply satisfying process, allowing us to truly savor each small detail as it came to life. Our brick colonial home, with its inherent charm and stately presence, truly shines with the addition of Christmas cheer. The front porch, as the first impression, received special attention, creating a welcoming embrace for all who visit.
We’ve gained a renewed appreciation for all the significant projects we’ve completed since 2022, now beautifully highlighted with the warm glow of twinkle lights. From the grand new front door that greets our guests, to the refreshed elegance of our foyer, the intricate details of the dining room ceiling, and the classic appeal of our traditional mantel, and of course, the cozy ambiance of the moody media room – each space tells a story of transformation and love. Adorning these areas with simple yet impactful Christmas decorations has truly brought them to life.
For our outdoor Christmas decor, we leaned into the timeless elegance of classic red ribbons and bows, generously incorporating them throughout our porch and exterior. This choice provided a vibrant pop of color against the traditional brick and lush evergreens, creating a cohesive and festive look. We intentionally exercised restraint with an abundance of ornaments or extraneous knick-knacks, allowing the architectural beauty of our colonial home to remain a focal point. This blend of classic elements with a touch of minimalism feels inherently “us” – a perfect harmony of coziness and understated sophistication. It’s a style that speaks to the heart of traditional holiday decor while maintaining a sense of calm and clarity, ideal for those who, like me, appreciate minimalism without sacrificing warmth.
A Cozy Retreat: Our Modern Traditional Christmas Living Room
The living room is undeniably the heart of our home, especially during the festive season. It’s where cherished memories are made, stories are shared, and the magic of Christmas truly comes alive. This year, our modern traditional aesthetic shines through, blending classic holiday elements with a fresh, contemporary feel. Imagine plush sofas adorned with festive throw pillows and soft blankets, inviting you to curl up with a hot cup of cocoa.
Our focal point, the fireplace mantel, is magnificently draped with a lush, homemade garland, twinkling with subtle lights and accented with deep red ribbons and elegant candles. Above the beautifully limewashed brick fireplace, our Samsung Frame TV, encased in a stylish bobbin frame, displays serene holiday art, seamlessly integrating technology with traditional decor. The room is bathed in the warm glow of our impressive fandelier, casting a soft, inviting light.
Of course, no Christmas living room is complete without a stunning tree. Our Christmas tree stands tall, adorned with a mix of curated ornaments that tell our family’s story and sparkle under the ambient lighting. The rich fabrics of our comfortable sofas, paired with elegant curtains, create a luxurious yet approachable atmosphere. The console table behind the sofa and our exquisite marble coffee table are styled with thoughtful Christmas decor essentials and a selection of inspiring coffee table books, ready for leisurely browsing. Every element works in harmony to create a truly magical and comfortable setting for holiday celebrations. Unplug and Connect: Our Moody Christmas Media Room
Our media room, typically a haven for movie nights and relaxation, transforms into a truly special space during Christmas. This is where our beloved “family tree” takes center stage – a deeply sentimental centerpiece filled with generations of memories. It’s adorned with a charming collection of ornaments, each holding a unique story: from Robert’s and my childhood keepsakes to the girls’ handmade creations from over the years, and cherished souvenirs from our family travels. This tree is a beautiful testament to our shared history.
This year, Robert and the girls took full creative control, decorating the tree themselves. It was wonderful to step back and watch them immerse themselves in the joy of the process, personalizing it with their own touches. To tie into a subtle theme, I added some delicate blush-colored ribbon, a gentle nod to the graceful pointe shoes in The Nutcracker, and then declared it complete. Some might call this tree a delightful mess, but to us, it’s a beautiful, authentic representation of our family’s journey, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every single ornament, every piece of tinsel, holds a precious story, making it the most meaningful tree in our home.
To further encourage family bonding and unplugged moments, a beloved tradition unfolds beneath this tree each year. We forgo decorative presents and instead place either a selection of engaging board games or a stack of classic Christmas storybooks. This simple act encourages us all to switch off the screens, put away distractions, and spend meaningful, connected time together. The moody ambiance of the room, with its rich wallpaper and deep teal paint, creates the perfect backdrop for cozy evenings, filled with laughter, stories, and the warmth of family during the holidays.

Enchanting Feasts: Our Modern Colonial Christmas Dining Room
Our dining room holds a unique place in our home; it’s a space reserved for special occasions, holidays, and cherished gatherings with guests. While I sometimes ponder transforming it into a more casual room for everyday use, seeing it dressed up for Christmas invariably reaffirms its purpose. This room is meant to be extraordinary, a touch “over-the-top” in the most delightful sense, much like a stunning party dress or a sharp suit. It’s not utilized daily, but when it is, it delivers an experience that is truly magical.
For the holidays, our modern colonial dining room transcends its everyday elegance, becoming a captivating stage for festive feasts and memorable conversations. The exquisite mural wallpaper provides a dramatic and artistic backdrop, enhanced by the soft glow from our elegant chandelier. Our classic yet contemporary dining furniture, from the grand table to the comfortable chairs, is dressed for the season with festive placemats, sparkling glassware, and a centerpiece that often features lush garland, candles, and delicate ornaments.
The entire room is enveloped in warmth, partly thanks to the luxurious curtains and the rich tones of our chosen navy blue paint, which beautifully complements the traditional Christmas palette. We’ve even added a small, thoughtfully decorated tree in the corner, adorned with classic tree ribbons, further enhancing the festive atmosphere. Every detail, from the carefully selected decor to the twinkling lights, works together to create an enchanting setting that truly feels like a celebration. This space isn’t just a room; it’s an experience, a place where holiday traditions are honored and new memories are forged, reinforcing its purpose as one of our home’s most special rooms.

A Grand Entrance: Our Colonial Christmas Foyer
The entryway sets the tone for the entire home, and our colonial foyer truly shines during the Christmas season, extending a warm and inviting welcome to all who cross our threshold. We recently completed a full refresh of our foyer and staircase, and now, adorned with festive decor, it feels extra cozy and luminous, especially when bathed in the soft glow of evening lights. This space, with its impressive scale and classic details, transforms into a beacon of holiday cheer, a perfect introduction to the modern colonial Christmas style that flows throughout our home.
The staircase, a prominent feature of our foyer, is a focal point of our Christmas decorating. Draped with lush garland, interwoven with twinkling lights and elegant ribbons, it creates a breathtaking visual as you enter. The newly installed staircase molding adds architectural interest, beautifully highlighted by the festive greenery. Adjacent to the staircase, our gallery wall, showcasing cherished family photos and art, gains an additional layer of warmth and sentimentality with subtle holiday touches.
On the landing, our beautifully stained cabinet provides a surface for seasonal vignettes – perhaps a grouping of vintage bottle brush trees, a scented candle, or a small bowl of glittering ornaments. The calming sage green paint on the walls offers a serene backdrop, allowing the vibrant reds and deep greens of the Christmas decor to truly pop. This year, the foyer feels more enchanting than ever, promising the magic that lies within. Keep an eye out for our upcoming annual candlelight Christmas tour, where you’ll see this space, and the rest of our home, illuminated in its most magical light.
