DIY Book Page Botanical Art: Create Stunning & Affordable Vintage Wall Decor
After completing our beautiful foyer shiplap wall, a new vision immediately sparked – the need for truly grand, impactful wall art. While it might seem counterintuitive to cover a portion of a newly installed feature wall, the right art piece elevates the entire space, adding depth, character, and a personalized touch. However, the familiar challenge quickly arose: the exorbitant cost associated with oversized artwork and large picture frames. Premium art often comes with a premium price tag, and even finding a frame of significant size without breaking the bank can be a daunting task. This common dilemma led us, the Shaver Three, on our usual quest for budget-friendly decor solutions, which often culminates in a spontaneous trip to our local Walmart.

The Quest for Affordable Frames
Our recent excursion proved to be quite fruitful! We were delighted to discover these impressive, large wooden poster frames, each priced at a mere $25. Finding frames of this size at such an affordable price point is a rare find, and it instantly fueled my creative ideas. I knew immediately that these frames held immense potential and envisioned giving them a beautiful, weathered finish – a signature touch that transforms ordinary items into pieces with a story and character. This discovery was the perfect foundation for our grand wall art project, proving once again that stunning home decor doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.

Essential Supplies for Your Botanical Masterpiece
Crafting this beautiful and cost-effective botanical art requires a few key materials, many of which you might already have on hand. These supplies are carefully selected to achieve that coveted vintage, high-end look without the corresponding price tag. Below is a comprehensive list of everything you’ll need to transform simple book pages into captivating wall decor. (Affiliate links are included below, noted with asterisks. For more information, please refer to my disclosure policy here.)
- 24″x36″ Wood Poster Frame*: These large frames provide the perfect canvas for your expansive botanical display. Their wooden construction is ideal for applying a weathered finish, adding to the vintage aesthetic.
- White Craft Paint*: A small amount of white paint is crucial for creating the homemade liming wax, which will give your frames that desirable distressed, antique look.
- Fiddes & Sons Clear Wax*: This soft clear wax forms the base of our custom liming wax. It helps to seal the wood while allowing the white pigment to subtly highlight the grain.
- A Paint Brush, Chip Brush, or Wax Brush: Essential for applying the liming wax mixture evenly onto your frames. A chip brush can be particularly good for creating a textured, weathered effect.
- A Dry, Clean Lint-Free Rag: You’ll use this to gently wipe off excess liming wax, allowing you to control the degree of distressing and reveal the natural wood beneath.
- A Cup and Spoon/Stirrer for Mixing Wax: For conveniently mixing your homemade liming wax to achieve a smooth, consistent blend.
- Spray Adhesive: I used E6000*: This adhesive is key for securely attaching your delicate book pages to the frame backing without wrinkles or buckling. Its strong bond ensures your artwork stays intact.
- Scissors: For precise trimming of the book pages and jute ribbon to ensure a clean, professional finish.
- Audubon Book (or similar botanical illustration book): These are very similar to mine* (Update: Since this date’s original posting, this link has been corrected to the Birds of America edition. I’m so sorry for any inconvenience if any of you purchased the Audubon’s America one. All fixed now.): The heart of this project! Look for vintage books filled with beautiful botanical or ornithological illustrations. Thrift stores and antique shops are excellent places to hunt for these treasures.
- Jute Burlap Ribbon*: This ribbon adds a crucial textural element and a refined grid pattern, transforming the “homemade” look into something more polished and sophisticated.
- School Glue or Mod Podge*: Used for adhering the burlap ribbon to the book pages. Both options provide a strong, clear bond.
Crafting Your Botanical Wall Art: A Step-by-Step Guide
This project is designed to be straightforward and enjoyable, offering a satisfying transformation from humble materials to a sophisticated art piece. Follow these steps to create your own unique book page botanical art.
Step 1: Preparing the Frames with a Custom Liming Wax Finish
To give our new wooden frames a charming, aged appearance, I opted to create a custom liming wax. This technique allows some of the natural wood grain to peek through, adding depth and character. The process is remarkably simple: in a small cup, I combined one tablespoon of white craft paint with three tablespoons of clear soft wax. I stirred this mixture for a minute or two until it achieved a smooth, consistent paste. The ratio can be adjusted depending on how opaque or translucent you want your liming effect to be – more paint for a whiter finish, more wax for a subtler wash.

With a paint brush, I applied the homemade liming wax generously and quite thickly over the entire frame surface. The key to achieving the perfect weathered look lies in the removal process. Immediately after applying, I used a clean, lint-free rag to gently rub off some of the wax. You have complete control over how much of the original wood finish you want to show; rubbing more vigorously will expose more wood, while a lighter touch will leave a more pronounced white wash. This allows for a customized finish that truly makes each frame unique. The entire liming process was surprisingly quick, taking only a matter of minutes to transform the raw wood into a beautifully aged piece.

The immediate transformation is quite striking. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the frame before and after the liming wax application. The difference is subtle yet impactful, turning a plain wooden frame into something with character and vintage appeal. I absolutely adore the resulting lime-washed, dry-brushed, weathered finish – it adds a touch of rustic elegance that complements a wide range of decor styles.

Step 2: Curating Your Botanical Prints
My inspiration for this project stemmed from a previous success: the botanical print window decor in our master bathroom. I knew I wanted to replicate that natural, serene aesthetic elsewhere in our home. A few years ago, my mom gifted me a true treasure – a vintage, thrifted Audubon Birds of America book. This book, though showing its age and falling apart, is a repository of exquisite Victorian-era biology illustrations. Each page is a piece of art, depicting birds with incredible detail and scientific accuracy. These particular bird prints hold a special place in my heart, as they beautifully echo the bird theme from Robert’s and my wedding day. Perhaps one day, I’ll share a full recap of our wedding here for everyone to see.

Despite its worn condition, the book’s contents are invaluable. I carefully selected 18 of my favorite illustrations – nine for each frame – ensuring a balanced and visually appealing arrangement. The existing cardboard backing of the frames served as our canvas. I had to gently trim the edges of some of the book pages to ensure they fit perfectly onto the cardboard piece, creating a seamless mosaic of natural beauty. This careful selection and preparation step ensures that each frame tells a unique story, blending history with personal significance.

Step 3: Adhering the Book Pages
Once the botanical prints were meticulously selected and trimmed, the next step was to securely attach them to the frame’s cardboard backing. I used spray adhesive for this task, applying an even coat to the back of each page before carefully positioning it. Spray adhesive is ideal because it provides a strong, consistent bond without causing the paper to warp or ripple, which can often happen with liquid glues. It’s important to work methodically, smoothing each page down from the center outwards to eliminate any air bubbles and ensure a perfectly flat surface.

After all the book pages were glued in place, I took a step back to assess the overall look. While the botanical prints themselves were beautiful, I noticed that the visible edges of the individual pages created a distinctively “homemade” aesthetic. It wasn’t quite the polished, high-end look I was aiming for. The slight imperfections and overlaps of the paper edges detracted from the desired vintage charm, making the piece appear less refined than I had envisioned.

Step 4: The Game-Changing Detail: Adding Jute Burlap Ribbon
It was at this point that my mom and mother-in-law offered a brilliant suggestion: to conceal the visible edges of the paper with jute burlap ribbon, creating a grid pattern. This seemingly small detail proved to be a transformative addition, instantly elevating the artwork from “homemade” to “gallery-worthy.” The natural texture of the burlap not only added another layer of visual interest but also provided a structured, professional finish that perfectly complemented the vintage botanical prints. It was an ingenious solution to a minor aesthetic issue, making a significant impact on the final presentation.

To apply the ribbon, I first laid out the strips of jute burlap ribbon onto the arrangement to ensure proper alignment and spacing. Once satisfied with the layout, I carefully lifted each strip and applied a thin line of simple school glue beneath it. While Mod Podge would also work beautifully for this step, I happened to be out, so school glue served as a perfect, readily available substitute. It’s important to apply enough glue to secure the ribbon firmly but not so much that it seeps through the fabric.

I began by placing and gluing the vertical strips of ribbon first. This establishes the initial structure of your grid. Ensure these strips are straight and evenly spaced to create a balanced look across your botanical prints.

Once the vertical lines were secure, I proceeded to apply the horizontal strips of ribbon, overlapping them slightly where they intersected the vertical lines. This creates a cohesive and visually appealing grid, further enhancing the polished appearance of the artwork. Allow ample time for the glue to dry completely before handling or moving the piece, ensuring everything is firmly set.

Step 5: Final Assembly
With the ribbon fully dry and the botanical mosaic complete, the final step was incredibly simple: carefully placing the entire cardboard piece, now adorned with the beautiful art, back into the prepared, limed frame. The fit was perfect, and the transformation was complete! The combination of the distressed frame and the grid of botanical prints created a truly stunning piece of wall art that looks far more expensive than its actual cost.

The Finished Look: A Vintage Charm Unveiled
The end result surpassed all my initial expectations! These DIY book page botanical art pieces turned out to be far more stunning than I had originally envisioned. The interplay of textures is simply captivating: the rough, natural feel of the jute burlap ribbon against the delicate, aged paper of the botanical prints, all framed by the beautifully limewashed wood, creates a rich and inviting aesthetic. The frames, with their subtly weathered finish, perfectly complement the vintage character of the illustrations, providing a sophisticated backdrop that highlights every intricate detail. It’s a harmonious blend of rustic charm and elegant design.

These grand botanical art pieces are an ideal match for our shiplap wall, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing focal point in the foyer. The clean lines of the shiplap provide a wonderful contemporary backdrop that allows the vintage character of the artwork to truly shine. The combination of old and new elements lends a timeless appeal to the space, making it feel both fresh and inviting.

The artwork feels perfectly at home nestled among the curated thrifted pieces on our foyer table. Each element contributes to a narrative of collected beauty and mindful decor. Speaking of thrifted treasures, I was particularly thrilled to find that charming scroll lamp at Goodwill for an incredible $2.00! These kinds of finds not only add character but also underscore the joy and satisfaction of decorating on a budget, proving that stunning aesthetics don’t require a hefty investment.

Completing Our Foyer: The Power of Art
Our foyer is now on the cusp of completion, with just a few final touches being added this week. It’s been a journey of transformation, and the addition of these large botanical prints has played a pivotal role in bringing the space together. It’s truly amazing how a well-chosen piece of art can completely alter the ambiance of a room, infusing it with personality, warmth, and a sense of completeness. The foyer feels significantly brighter and more inviting than it did just a few weeks ago, a testament to the power of thoughtful design and DIY creativity.
