This week marks the beginning of an incredibly significant and deeply personal project for Robert and me, a venture I’ve eagerly anticipated (with a healthy dose of nerves!) since Bless’er House first came to life nearly a decade ago. It’s a project that encapsulates the very essence of what I always envisioned this blog would champion: using design to make a tangible difference in the world.
Our dear friend, Amber, plays a crucial role as the Coordinator at The Cottage, a vital, year-round emergency safe shelter dedicated to supporting homeless women. Located within the compassionate embrace of the Pathways Community Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina, The Cottage operates in meaningful partnership with The Life House Women’s Shelter. When Amber reached out, asking if we could lend our expertise to decorate their small conference room, my immediate response was an emphatic, heartfelt “YES!” – I couldn’t say it fast enough.

The Life House Cottage offers a lifeline to women in critical need, providing a safe haven where up to 35 individuals can find shelter seven nights a week. Beyond a warm bed, it offers essential amenities like showers, laundry facilities, and nutritious meals and snacks. It’s a place where immediate needs are met, laying the groundwork for brighter futures.
Over the past year, I’ve had the profound privilege of bringing my daughter, Olivia, to volunteer alongside me at The Cottage. These experiences have been incredibly humbling and deeply impactful. Sitting down, sharing conversations, and truly listening to these women reveals stories of incredible resilience, strength, and bravery that truly move you. Their spirit in the face of adversity is a constant source of inspiration.
Our mission is to transform their conference room, a space that serves as a cornerstone for critical services. This room is where women receive invaluable counseling, tailored case management, essential employment assistance, and vital financial education. Therefore, this office meeting room is far more than just a place to gather; it’s a key component in their journey towards regaining independence and achieving self-sufficiency.
Designing a Sanctuary: The Conference Room Makeover Plan
We are immensely excited and honored to be entrusted with creating a space that not only fulfills these crucial functional needs but also communicates, from the very moment someone steps through the door, a profound sense of belonging. Our goal is for every woman to feel loved, safe, and truly comfortable here. This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about fostering an environment conducive to healing, growth, and empowerment. I am beyond eager to bring this thoughtful design plan to life and witness the completed transformation.

Crafting an Inviting and Functional Space
Our design philosophy for The Cottage’s conference room centers on creating an atmosphere of calm and professionalism, while never compromising on warmth and welcome. The existing space, while functional, lacked the comforting elements that truly foster open communication and trust, which are paramount for the services provided here. We aimed for a balanced aesthetic that feels both inspiring and grounded, incorporating elements that evoke a sense of home rather than an institutional setting. The color palette, featuring deep teal and jewel tones, was carefully selected to be soothing yet sophisticated, promoting a sense of peace and stability.
The Central Hub: Conference Table and Seating
Given that this room will frequently host meetings with several women simultaneously, selecting the right conference table and seating was paramount. We need a sturdy, large table capable of comfortably accommodating 6-8 people. Durability and ease of maintenance are key considerations for a high-traffic environment.
For seating, these elegant Midcentury Mod style dining chairs struck the perfect balance. Their compact footprint is ideal for optimizing space in a smaller room, ensuring easy movement and a less cluttered feel. Crucially, their ergonomic design ensures they remain incredibly comfortable, essential for longer counseling sessions or workshops. The clean lines and timeless appeal of this style also contribute to the room’s overall modern yet welcoming aesthetic.
Enhancing Ambiance: Curtains, Rugs, and Lighting
To infuse immediate warmth and softness into the space, we plan to address the small window with a pair of luxurious jewel-toned curtain panels. These curtains will not only add a rich pop of color and texture but also provide a sense of privacy and intimacy. Beneath the main seating area, a beautiful traditional rug will be rolled out. This addition is vital for softening the industrial painted concrete floor, adding much-needed warmth, absorbing sound to create a quieter environment, and defining the conference area within the room.
Lighting is another crucial element. To counteract the harshness of overhead fluorescent bulbs and introduce a more inviting glow, we envision hanging a stylish plug-in pendant lamp from the drop ceiling. This will provide a cozy, diffused light source, instantly making the room feel more welcoming and less sterile. Layered lighting is fundamental to creating a comfortable and adaptable atmosphere suitable for various activities, from quiet consultations to lively group discussions.

Dynamic Wall Decor to Inspire and Inform
One of the challenges in this room is the presence of only one small window and two modest doors, leaving large expanses of empty wall space. Our strategy for the wall decor is twofold: to create the illusion of more windows and to maximize functionality. We believe that art and thoughtful displays can dramatically alter the perception of a space, making it feel more open, engaging, and inspiring.
A key innovative element will be adhering mural wallpaper panels directly to sheet metal. This clever technique will allow us to create two impressively large and highly functional memo boards. These boards will serve as versatile organizational tools for the shelter staff, enabling them to easily display important documents, announcements, or uplifting messages using magnets. This solution not only adds significant utility but also introduces a beautiful, large-scale art element that brightens the room and offers visual interest.
On the back wall, we envision a carefully curated gallery wall featuring a collection of framed vintage art pieces. The timeless appeal of vintage art brings character and a sense of history, grounding the space. To further enhance the cozy ambiance and provide additional light, these art pieces will be flanked with elegant table lamps. This layered lighting approach, combined with the visual interest of the gallery wall, will transform a previously stark wall into a focal point of comfort and aesthetic appeal.
Efficient and Stylish Storage Solutions
Effective storage is critical in any functional office or meeting space, especially one that serves diverse needs. Our goal is to provide ample storage without sacrificing the room’s inviting atmosphere. To achieve the look of one expansive, custom sideboard, we plan a smart arrangement: pushing together three individual small reeded accent cabinets. This not only creates a cohesive and elegant visual line but also provides flexible storage within. The reeded texture adds a sophisticated, tactile element to the room. On top of this combined unit, we will set up a welcoming coffee bar, offering refreshments and a moment of solace to both staff and residents.
Amber, as the coordinator, requires a dedicated and highly organized workspace. For her, we’ve selected a practical yet stylish secretary desk. This choice is ideal because it offers excellent built-in storage specifically designed for files and organizational essentials. The compact nature of a secretary desk also makes it perfect for a smaller room, ensuring functionality without overwhelming the space. This thoughtful integration of storage will help maintain a tidy and professional environment, crucial for the sensitive work conducted at The Cottage.

A Nurturing Reading Corner for Reflection
Every truly comforting space benefits from a dedicated area for quiet reflection and individual solace. To establish a serene reading corner within the conference room, we plan to place a plush armchair. This armchair will be paired with a versatile floor lamp, providing focused task lighting for reading and contributing to the overall ambient glow of the room. This small but significant corner offers a personal retreat where women can find a moment of peace, read, or simply gather their thoughts.
To further enhance the feeling of spaciousness and distribute light effectively, we’ll incorporate a large windowpane mirror. Mirrors are an interior designer’s secret weapon, bouncing natural and artificial light around a room, making it appear larger and brighter—a crucial consideration in a room with limited windows. Beyond its functional benefits, the mirror also serves as an elegant decorative element, adding depth and visual interest.
Finally, to bring an essential touch of life, vibrancy, and natural beauty into the space, a few carefully selected plants will be introduced. Plants not only enhance the aesthetic appeal but also contribute to a healthier indoor environment and have been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. This small living element will help make the room feel more alive, welcoming, and connected to nature, further aiding in the creation of a therapeutic and comforting atmosphere.

The Transformative Power of Thoughtful Design
This comprehensive design vision aims to do more than just update a room; it seeks to create an environment that actively supports the incredible work done at The Cottage. By investing in a well-designed space, we are investing in the dignity and well-being of the women who pass through its doors. A beautiful, comfortable, and functional environment can significantly impact mood, focus, and overall confidence, fostering a sense of respect and self-worth that is invaluable on a journey to stability. It underscores the message that these women are valued and deserving of a beautiful space to heal and grow.
So, that’s the full vision for this conference room makeover! Can you already imagine the transformation? You will, very soon – at least, that’s our fervent hope. We are praying, hoping, and crossing all appendages that we can execute this conference room and meeting space makeover efficiently and cost-effectively, allowing The Cottage to utilize this enhanced space for their critical services as soon as possible. This project is a labor of love, driven by the desire to make a lasting, positive impact. I’ll be sure to share plenty of behind-the-scenes glimpses of the entire process on my Instagram Stories, inviting you all to follow along on this inspiring journey.
