Transforming a shared space for three active pre-teen and teenage girls into a serene yet vibrant beach-themed bedroom was a dream come true. This dramatic bedroom makeover features custom triple bunk beds, inspiring camp art, ingenious organization solutions, and thoughtful, cozy lighting, creating a stylish and functional sanctuary.
After successfully completing the boho cottage shared bedroom makeover for two of the five sisters who live nearby, the remaining three girls eagerly requested a refresh of their own. It was only fair to give their shared space the same creative attention and personalized touch!
The primary challenge was devising an optimal bedroom layout that maximized functionality, comfortably accommodated a triple bunk bed setup, and harmoniously blended the distinct personal styles of each girl into one cohesive and inspiring look. We aimed for a design that felt both calming and bright, a true reflection of their individual personalities while fostering a shared sense of tranquility.

The girls’ top request was a room that exuded a calming yet vibrant atmosphere. The one color they all universally agreed upon was a soft, light blue. This consensus naturally guided us towards a cottage beach themed bedroom, infused with a playful, camp-out vibe, creating a perfect blend of relaxation and youthful energy.
Before the Beach-Themed Makeover: A Look Back
Before our creative intervention, their shared room, while functional, felt notably cramped, especially with the existing triple bunk bed configuration. It lacked personalized touches and the efficient use of space that growing pre-teens and teenagers truly need. Our goal was to transform this tight space into an airy, organized, and inspiring haven.

Multipurpose Furniture Layout for Dynamic Living
In a shared bedroom for three girls, especially pre-teens and teenagers, efficient storage and versatile “zones” are paramount. This was the driving force behind our furniture selections. We sought pieces that could adapt to their evolving needs, from homework and creative projects to simply relaxing and socializing.
To address these critical needs, we discovered these ingenious dresser desks. They seamlessly transition between a spacious clothing drawer and a functional desk or vanity by simply dropping down a panel in the top drawer. This smart design means the girls have ample storage for their belongings, and as they grow, they have dedicated spaces for homework, makeup application, or pursuing their hobbies. This flexibility ensures the furniture remains relevant and useful for years to come.
Complementing these versatile desks are the charming scalloped chairs. Their design is not only aesthetically pleasing, subtly hinting at seashells and the beach theme, but also incredibly practical. They function perfectly as comfortable desk or vanity chairs, providing the right amount of support. When not in use at the desk, they can be easily moved under the loft bunk to create a cozy hang-out spot or an inviting reading nook, adapting effortlessly to the girls’ daily activities and preferences.

Contrast this with the single, less functional desk/vanity setup they had before, which offered minimal storage and adaptability.
The “Before” Glimpse: Limited Workspace

Creating the Coastal Ambiance: Paint and Wallpaper
The foundation of any great room makeover begins with color, and for these three sisters, light blue was the unanimous choice. To bring this serene hue to life, we opted for Romabio Carolina Sky Low Lustre paint from our exclusive Bless’er House paint color line. This stunning shade was applied to the ceiling, trim, and doors, enveloping the room in a soft, ethereal glow.
What makes Carolina Sky truly exceptional is its chameleon-like quality; it subtly shifts between blue, green, and gray depending on the ambient light, creating a dynamic yet consistently fresh and cheerful atmosphere. This versatility was key to achieving a sophisticated beach aesthetic without being overly thematic.
Beyond its beauty, Romabio paint offers significant health benefits, making it an ideal choice for children’s and teenagers’ rooms. As a zero VOC and non-toxic formula, it ensures a healthier indoor environment. Crafted with natural mineral ingredients using ancient Italian techniques, Romabio interior paints deliver a gorgeous, luminous finish that truly elevates the space, making it both beautiful and safe.
For the walls, we selected a classic striped peel-and-stick wallpaper. The beauty of peel-and-stick is its ease of removal, offering flexibility should the girls wish to update their room’s look in the future. We customized the colors to “Eggshell” and “Celery” to perfectly complement the Carolina Sky paint. This timeless striped pattern ensures the room can easily transition from a vibrant teen space to a sophisticated adult bedroom.
The combination of the subtle stripes and the painted ceiling creates an illusion of increased height, making the room feel significantly more spacious and airy than before. Just like vertical stripes in fashion, they visually elongate the space, adding to the room’s open and inviting feel, embodying a vintage, timeless, and perfectly beach-themed vibe without any cliché.

Witness the dramatic change from the previous layout. The strategic use of vertical stripes and a painted ceiling truly transforms the perception of height and spaciousness.
Before: A Dull and Squat Space

Smart Storage Solutions for a Tidy Teen Room
Effective storage is the backbone of any organized shared space, especially when accommodating the diverse belongings of three growing girls. We implemented several creative storage solutions designed to keep the room clutter-free while adding character and style.
DIY Burl Wood IKEA Hack Dresser: Style on a Budget
For a high-end look without the high price tag, I undertook a DIY burl wood dresser hack. By simply applying burl contact paper to an IKEA Hemnes chest of drawers, we achieved a sophisticated, custom appearance. To further enhance its charm and add a touch of feminine elegance, we swapped out the standard knobs for exquisite gold and glass knobs. This transformation not only provides ample storage but also serves as a stylish focal point in the room, reflecting the beach theme with its natural wood-like texture.

This new dresser offers significantly more storage space than their previous setup, ensuring each girl has plenty of room for her clothes and personal items. It’s a game-changer for maintaining order.
Before: Inadequate Storage

A Cozy Reading Nook with a Rattan Bookshelf
Given the girls’ shared love for reading and their specific request for dedicated book storage, we carved out a delightful reading nook beneath the loft bunk. A stylish rattan bookshelf was the perfect addition, not only providing essential storage but also introducing a natural, coastal texture that beautifully complements the beach theme. Rattan evokes a relaxed, seaside feel, making the nook an inviting escape.
The scalloped chairs here were a surprisingly comfortable find. During the makeover, I personally tested one and found it so supportive and cozy that I hardly wanted to get up! Their ergonomic design makes them ideal for prolonged reading sessions or simply lounging, yet they offer enough back support to function effectively with the dresser desks when needed. The subtle scallop detail on the chairs is another elegant nod to the beach theme, reminiscent of delicate seashells, adding a layer of charm to this dedicated relaxation zone.

The Ultimate Command Center Zone: Organized Efficiency
Initially, I had a different, more budget-friendly bookcase in mind, but a last-minute stock issue during our week-long makeover led me to invest in a slightly more expensive shelf with next-day shipping. This unexpected turn proved to be a blessing in disguise, thanks to Robert’s brilliant idea: utilize the backside of the bookcase as a dynamic command center!
This innovative solution provides a dedicated space for the three girls to manage their busy lives. They can effortlessly keep track of school schedules, jot down important reminders, and proudly display their artwork or notes. We used simple Command strips to securely hang a practical chalkboard calendar, versatile magnetic white boards, and functional cork boards. This personalized command center is not only practical but also encourages organization and personal expression, ensuring nothing gets overlooked in their active daily routines.

Coastal Wall Decor and Camp Art: Curated Character
In designing bedrooms for pre-teens and teenagers, the key is to allow for vibrant self-expression through a carefully curated collection of art and objects. Our goal was to create a gallery wall that felt authentically collected over time, rather than a generic “theme-y” display. We blended vintage-style pennants, varied objects, and coastal art pieces to clearly communicate the beach-themed aesthetic, all while maintaining a fresh and unique feel.
The selection process focused on adding texture, diverse shapes, and a tangible sense of “feeling” to the space. It wasn’t just about hanging pictures; it was about telling a story and creating an inspiring environment. If you ever need assistance in creating your own display, my go-to gallery wall hanging trick can guide you through the process, ensuring a balanced and engaging arrangement.

This corner of the room underwent a remarkable transformation. Prior to the addition of our carefully chosen coastal wall decor and camp art gallery, it lacked definition and personality.
Before: A Blank Canvas

Inspiring Coastal Paintings
The true inspiration for this entire bedroom makeover stemmed from a single piece of art: the exquisite Castle Coast Print by the renowned artist Teil Duncan. This piece has long been a personal favorite, and I eagerly awaited the perfect opportunity to feature it in a teen bedroom. We framed it in a sophisticated gold frame, a choice that resonated with the girls’ expressed love for gold accents, adding a touch of subtle glamour.
Adjacent to this, we placed a charming coastal painting titled “How About Jupiter?” by artist Maja Cunningham, depicting a vintage Woody Wagoneer with a surfboard on top. By intentionally mismatching the frames, we achieved a collected, organic feel, as if these cherished pieces had been gathered and admired over many years, contributing to the authentic beach house aesthetic.

Nostalgic Vintage Pennant Camp Art
To infuse a playful “camp-out” vibe into the beachy bedroom, we incorporated two vintage-style pennants. These pieces were chosen not only for their textural quality and unique shapes but also for their uplifting messages. The “It’s Cool to Be Kind” pennant adds a wonderful visual contrast with its distinct shape and delivers a powerful, positive message perfectly suited for pre-teens and teenagers, promoting empathy and kindness within their shared space.
Adding an extra dose of vibrancy, the “These Are the Good Old Days” pennant introduces a cheerful pop of yellow. This sunny hue cleverly ties together subtle hints of yellow found throughout the room, from the beach art to the rattan bookshelf and accent pillows, creating a cohesive and joyful color palette that truly encapsulates the carefree spirit of youth and summer days.
Thoughtful Decorative Wall Decor Objects
Drawing inspiration from the art of dimensional display, we incorporated a vintage ribbon that added a playful, unexpected texture and an extra layer of color to the gallery wall. This element brings a unique softness and movement, breaking up the traditional flat surfaces of framed art.
To further integrate the beach style and offer a touch of musical delight, we hung a ukulele. This isn’t just a decorative piece; it’s fully functional, allowing the girls to easily take it down and play whenever the mood strikes. It’s a perfect example of how decor can be both beautiful and interactive, enhancing the room’s character and providing a creative outlet.

A Rattan Mirror Blending Boho and Beach
One of the girls expressed a particular fondness for bohemian (boho) style, which made incorporating rattan a natural choice. Rattan is a signature element of boho decor and beautifully complements the relaxed, natural aesthetic of a beach-themed room. This rattan arched mirror served as the perfect piece to seamlessly blend both boho and coastal vibes, adding warmth and texture to the space.
Strategically placing a table lamp in front of the mirror, directly opposite a window, was a clever design trick. This arrangement effectively bounces natural and artificial light around the room, enhancing its brightness and creating the illusion of a much larger space. A little design tip for maximizing light! Side note: I intended to place a cute sister photo in this green picture frame, but time ran out. The vibrant palm tree print it came with still works perfectly with the theme, doesn’t it? 😉

Engaging Decorative Accents and Accessories
Beyond visual aesthetics, creating a truly comfortable and personalized bedroom involves engaging all the senses. Since the three sisters adore music, we included a vintage-style Bluetooth speaker with an FM radio. This allows them to effortlessly play their favorite tunes, filling the room with sound and positive energy whenever they wish.
A diffuser was another thoughtful addition, serving multiple purposes. It can provide a soft, glowing nightlight for comfort or, in times of illness, diffuse soothing eucalyptus oil to aid breathing. We specifically added a few drops of this organic Sleep essential oil blend to cultivate a deeply relaxing and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for winding down after a busy day.
Considering all five senses – sight, sound, smell, touch, and even taste (though we skipped snacks as decor!) – is crucial for crafting a cozy and immersive room experience. These carefully chosen sound and smell elements are just as vital as the visual decor in making this bedroom a true sanctuary for the girls.

Seamless Organization for Everyday Living
Beyond the innovative command center on the bookcase backing in the reading nook, we integrated several practical organizers on the dresser desks to empower the girls to maintain a tidy and functional space. These thoughtfully chosen items ensure that school supplies, art materials, and personal care products each have a designated home, making daily routines smoother and more efficient.
We selected stylish concrete bookends that not only hold books upright but also feature integrated slots for extra notebooks and school supply storage. Additionally, we added these chic round acrylic desktop organizers. These are perfect for discreetly storing smaller school or art supplies and makeup within the dresser desks, keeping surfaces clutter-free. These subtle yet effective organizational tools are crucial for a shared room, helping each girl maintain her personal space with ease and encouraging good habits.

Optimal Triple Bunk Beds for Comfort and Space
The original triple bunk bed in the girls’ room featured extremely tight sleeping quarters, which often made climbing in and out uncomfortable. To remedy this, we completely reconfigured the sleeping arrangements, spreading out the three beds into a more spacious and functional setup. We achieved this by positioning a double bunk twin bed alongside a separate bunk loft. This side-by-side arrangement dramatically improved the living space, providing each girl with ample head room to sit up comfortably in bed, a small but significant luxury.
The chosen metal bunk beds introduce a subtle antique style to the room, adding character and a touch of timeless charm. Opting for white beds was a deliberate choice to enhance the room’s light and airy feel, contributing to the overall serene beach aesthetic. Although one bunk bed was out of stock in white, a quick spray paint job ensured a cohesive, bright look, making the entire sleeping area feel open and inviting.
Cozy and Practical Bedding Solutions
Making beds in a bunk bed setup can be a daily struggle, particularly with three levels. To simplify this task and ensure the girls’ comfort, we invested in Beddy’s bedding sets, after hearing countless glowing reviews. While it’s too early to speak to their long-term durability, the girls absolutely adore how effortless it is to zip them up like a sleeping bag, quickly transforming a messy bed into a neat one. The luxurious minky fabric lining inside also ensures a super soft and cozy sleep experience, adding a touch of indulgence to their nightly routine.
To introduce a playful element of pattern and texture, we layered the beds with a variety of stylish accents. We added floral printed gold quilt shams, paired with fresh blue geo printed pillowcases. To complete the look, soft pink floral block print Kantha quilts were draped over each bed. This combination of patterns and textures creates a visually rich and inviting sleeping area, perfectly complementing the beach theme while reflecting each girl’s unique style.

A Touch of Coastal Comfort: The Scalloped Jute Rug
To anchor the room and infuse it with natural texture, we discovered a fantastic Serena and Lily dupe: a beautiful scalloped jute rug. This rug not only introduced a much-needed layer of beach-inspired texture underfoot but also echoed the charming scallop details found in the chairs, creating a cohesive and thoughtful design narrative.
The natural jute material instantly made the room feel incredibly cozy and warm, providing a vital organic element that grounds the space. It’s a perfect example of how the right rug can dramatically enhance both the comfort and aesthetic appeal of a room, especially one designed to evoke the relaxed elegance of a coastal retreat.
Functional and Stylish Window Shades
For the windows, I repeatedly turn to these cordless pull-down bamboo shades in various room makeovers, and for good reason. They consistently prove to be the most functional and budget-friendly option available, offering both practicality and aesthetic appeal. Their cordless design ensures safety and a clean, uncluttered look, which is essential in a busy shared bedroom.
These bamboo shades infuse the room with fantastic texture and a much-appreciated warmth, instantly softening the windows and contributing to the overall cozy atmosphere. While they are not blackout shades, they provide excellent light filtering, offering privacy and reducing glare without making the room feel dim. Their inherent beauty is so striking that I decided against adding any additional curtains, allowing the shades themselves to be the focal point and maintaining a minimalist, airy feel perfectly aligned with the beach theme.

Let’s take one final look at the “before” state of this bedroom to truly appreciate the incredible transformation!
Before: A Cramped Sleeping Space

Thoughtful Lighting for Comfort and Functionality
Lighting plays a crucial role in both the aesthetics and functionality of any room, especially a shared bedroom with unique needs like triple bunk beds. We carefully selected lighting solutions that enhance the beach theme while prioritizing safety and individual control for each girl.
The Innovative Fandelier: Style Meets Airflow
With the triple bunk beds reaching close to the ceiling, a traditional ceiling fan with exposed blades was an immediate safety concern – a disaster waiting to happen! To circumvent this, we opted for an ingenious caged ceiling fan with a rattan-like shade, affectionately known as a “fandelier.” This piece works incredibly well, providing exceptional air output that rivals conventional blade fans, all within a safe, enclosed design.
The fandelier also comes equipped with a remote control, allowing for convenient adjustments to the light bulb color temperature and offering a dimming function. This versatility enables the girls to customize the ambiance of their room with ease, from bright task lighting to a soft, relaxing glow. For more top-rated options, you can explore my list of best-rated fandeliers.
Personalized Wall Lamps for Each Bunk
A conventional nightstand with a bedside lamp is virtually impossible to access with a triple bunk bed configuration. To ensure each girl had her own personal light source, we installed these clever wall-mounted plug-in lamps from IKEA. Each lamp is easily operable with a pull string, granting individual control to each girl right from her bunk. This thoughtful detail provides convenience for reading, late-night chats, or simply adding a cozy glow, without disturbing her sisters.

Ambient and Task Lighting with Table Lamps
To further enhance the room’s illumination, we incorporated a variety of table lamps. On one dresser, a charming beachy table lamp with a classic linen shade provides a soft, ambient glow, contributing to the overall coastal aesthetic. On the opposite dresser, a sleek modern task lamp offers focused light, perfect for homework, reading, or any detailed tasks the girls might need to accomplish.
In the inviting reading nook, nestled on the rattan bookshelf, a practical mini lamp with built-in USB ports ensures that extra reading light is always at hand. The integrated USB ports are a thoughtful addition, allowing the girls to conveniently charge their devices while enjoying their favorite books. This multi-functional lighting scheme ensures every corner of the room is well-lit and caters to the diverse needs of three active teenagers.
