Stepping into a new home is always an exciting adventure, a blank canvas awaiting personality and style. Since closing on our new house last week, the journey has been nothing short of a whirlwind of paint cans and tireless effort. I’ve literally lost count of the gallons we’ve gone through – somewhere north of 13, if my aching arms are any indication! But every stroke, every decision, and every ounce of effort has been profoundly worth it, especially when I look at the incredible transformation of our living room.
Just a few days ago, this central hub of our new home presented a very different picture. While undoubtedly a spacious and well-proportioned area, it carried the distinct stylistic echoes of its previous inhabitants. It was a space with potential, but not yet *our* space. The living room looked like this, a canvas waiting for its true colors to emerge:

We were fortunate to start with such a great foundation. The bones of the room were solid, and it certainly possessed a charming quality in its original state. The existing yellow tones, while inherently cheerful, simply didn’t align with the crisp, modern classic aesthetic we envisioned for our new home. Personal style is paramount in interior design, and for us, that meant embracing a fresh, clean, and ultimately, a more flexible palette.

One of the most compelling reasons I consistently gravitate towards neutral paint colors is the incredible freedom they offer in decorating. (Incidentally, I recently shared some of my absolute favorite neutral hues for those seeking inspiration.) This flexibility is a game-changer for anyone who, like me, might experience a touch of “decorating commitment phobia.” Neutrals provide a serene backdrop that allows you to effortlessly adapt your space to suit seasonal changes, evolving trends, or simply your mood. Whether it’s vibrant summer blooms, cozy autumn textures, or festive winter accents, a neutral base ensures your room remains cohesive and stylish without requiring a complete overhaul every few months. It’s truly a decorator’s secret weapon, offering endless possibilities for personal expression.
The Power of Light: Brightening with Benjamin Moore Simply White

Despite the generous natural light streaming through the elegant French doors, the room still felt a little subdued and darker than we preferred in person. This is where the magic of a carefully chosen white paint comes into play. To instantly lift and brighten the entire space, we opted for Benjamin Moore Aura paint in Simply White (OC-117) for all the ceilings and trim. This particular shade is renowned for its clean, crisp quality without feeling stark or cold. It acts like a true white, expertly reflecting and bouncing around every ray of sunlight that enters the room. Prior to this, the doors and trim were a dated beige, which absorbed light rather than enhancing it. The transition to Simply White was akin to flipping on a giant light switch – suddenly, the room felt expansive, airy, and undeniably luminous. I can literally feel the difference; it’s as if I can truly *see* the space now, bathed in a refreshing glow that transforms the entire atmosphere.
Achieving Soft Warmth: Walls in Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee

While Simply White brought the brightness, we wanted to ensure the living room retained a subtle warmth and inviting atmosphere. For the walls, we selected Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee (OC-45). This exquisite off-white possesses a gentle creaminess that beautifully complements the crisp white trim, preventing the room from feeling overly stark or sterile. Swiss Coffee provides that perfect balance – a soft, sophisticated backdrop that still feels incredibly fresh and modern. It’s a sophisticated choice for those who desire a brighter space but shy away from a pure, unadulterated white on their walls. The subtle undertones of Swiss Coffee create an enveloping effect, making the room feel cozy yet expansive, a true testament to the nuances of neutral paint colors. This careful selection ensures that while the room is light and airy, it also retains an inherent coziness that is essential for a family living space.
Dramatic Contrast: Doors in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron
One design element I’ve always yearned to incorporate is dark interior doors. In our previous home, it was a dream that never quite materialized, but with the classic and high-contrast aesthetic we’re cultivating in this new space, it was the perfect opportunity. We decided to paint all the doors in Benjamin Moore Wrought Iron (2124-10). This color is an absolute revelation. It’s a deeply rich, sophisticated hue – darker than a charcoal gray but not quite a true black. The depth and intensity of Wrought Iron create an incredible visual anchor in the room, providing that much-needed high-contrast pop. Against the soft Swiss Coffee walls and the bright Simply White trim, these dark doors instantly elevate the room’s sophistication, adding drama and an undeniable sense of architectural interest. The contrast is simply breathtaking and transforms an ordinary doorway into a striking design feature, framing the views into adjacent rooms and making a bold, elegant statement. The power of paint, truly, never ceases to amaze me and demonstrates how a single color choice can dramatically redefine a space.

Beyond the Paint: Envisioning Our High-Contrast Haven
With the foundational paint complete, our living room is now a pristine, high-contrast canvas. While it currently possesses a minimalist, almost “hospital-like” cleanliness, this is merely an exciting interim stage. The real fun begins as we layer in the elements that will infuse personality, warmth, and comfort. Our comprehensive design plan includes selecting the perfect area rug to define the seating zone and introduce texture, along with carefully curated accessories to add character and visual interest. This weekend marks a significant milestone as we’ll be swapping out the existing, outdated ceiling fan for a more stylish fixture and, most importantly, hauling in some of our cherished furniture pieces. For real-time updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses of these exciting developments, be sure to follow along on my Instagram stories! We are eager to share every step of this journey as our vision comes to life.
Of course, a home renovation is always a mosaic of large and small tasks. Beyond the major paint transformation, we still have a list of minor yet impactful jobs. This includes replacing all the yellowed beige outlets and light switches with crisp white ones, a small detail that makes a surprising difference in the overall fresh aesthetic and often goes unnoticed until addressed. And then there’s the perennial challenge of managing our “crazy pile of cords and cables” – a battle I’m sure many homeowners can relate to! Thoughtful cord management solutions are definitely on the agenda to ensure a clean, uncluttered look that enhances the room’s newfound serenity. These finishing touches are crucial for a truly polished and comfortable space.

Navigating Design Dilemmas: The TV and Mantelpiece
Every design project comes with its unique set of compromises and dilemmas. In our living room, the primary challenge revolved around the placement of the television. Given the room’s layout and the prominent fireplace, we faced a difficult choice: either mount the TV above the mantelpiece or position it in front of one of the beautiful French windows. Reluctantly, we opted for the former. While I’m genuinely sad that this means I won’t be able to adorn our mantel with seasonal decor and cherished keepsakes – a decorating joy I always look forward to – it was the most practical solution for optimal viewing and maintaining the flow of the room. It’s a classic design conundrum, and sometimes functionality has to take precedence, even if it means sacrificing a beloved decorative opportunity. Learning to embrace these compromises is part of the homeowner’s journey.

However, every small compromise often leads to a delightful discovery. My slight disappointment about the mantel was quickly softened by these charming little sconces I stumbled upon! I found them on clearance at Lowe’s for an incredible $16 each. They add a touch of elegant symmetry and warm ambient lighting to either side of the fireplace, perfectly complementing our developing aesthetic without breaking the bank. It’s these unexpected finds and budget-friendly treasures that truly make a house feel like a personalized home, showcasing that beautiful design doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag. They are a testament to the idea that thoughtful curation and a keen eye for deals can yield truly stunning results.

Currently, the room features just two accent chairs and a temporary area rug, giving it a somewhat sparse but intriguing “coastal chic” vibe. 😉 We’re just having a bit of fun with the empty space before our main furniture arrives! These initial pieces are merely placeholders, but they already hint at the potential for a sophisticated and inviting living area. Are you loving the direction so far? We certainly are excited to see it all come together and share the final, fully furnished reveal!

The Journey Continues: A House Becoming a Home
As we approach our official move-in date next week, the countdown is on! We’ve already completed the painting of four rooms, with three more to go before we can fully settle in and, importantly, allow my incredibly supportive parents to reclaim their house. This entire experience, from the initial excitement of the before tour to the satisfaction of seeing these transformations unfold, has been truly surreal. I still pinch myself sometimes, half-expecting the previous owners to reappear and inform us it was all an elaborate prank. This new chapter, while presenting its own unique set of challenges compared to our last house, is filled with immense potential and endless opportunities for creativity. Each challenge overcome only strengthens our resolve to create a space that truly reflects us.
We are profoundly grateful for all the love, encouragement, and support you’ve extended to us throughout this whirlwind process. Your enthusiasm makes this journey even more enjoyable and inspires us to keep sharing our progress. We can’t wait to share every step as we continue to infuse this house with our personality, making it unequivocally feel like home. Stay tuned for more updates, design decisions, and perhaps a few more paint-splattered anecdotes from our ongoing home transformation adventure!
