From Drab to Dream Den: Our Rec Room’s Big Reveal

Ultimate Family Fun: A Colorful Rec Room Makeover Packed with Storage and Multi-Functional Zones for Every Age

The journey to transform the Carney family’s recreational room is complete, and the results are nothing short of spectacular! This ambitious project culminated in what we genuinely believe is one of the most enjoyable and functionally brilliant spaces we’ve ever had the pleasure of designing. It’s a room that invites relaxation and creativity without taking itself too seriously, yet it delivers a powerful punch in terms of practical features. We managed to seamlessly integrate extensive storage solutions, dedicated areas for crafting and homework, versatile game zones, and diverse entertainment options, catering to everyone from lively toddlers to independent teenagers. And yes, even the family dog has a designated cozy spot! Crafting such a comprehensive and dynamic environment within a single room was a significant challenge, but one we embraced wholeheartedly, and we couldn’t be prouder of the outcome.

For those just joining us, this incredible makeover was a special gift to our wonderful neighbors, the Carney family. They are truly exceptional people; both parents are distinguished Air Force veterans, and they are raising a vibrant family of nine children! Each one of their kids is an absolute sweetheart, making it an honor to create a space that reflects their spirit and meets their unique needs. Before our intervention, the room featured outdated, approximately 50-year-old built-ins that had definitely seen better days. Given the wide age range of the children, from college-bound young adults to preschoolers, our primary goal was to design a space that would gracefully grow with them. It needed to feel mature enough for older kids and adults, yet still vibrant and engaging for the younger ones, without shying away from a bold palette of colors.

Inspired by the parents’ military service and the family’s shared passion for the Carolina Panthers, we decided to weave together a patriotic red, white, and blue theme, enhanced with a playful nod to the Panthers’ signature teal. Our intention was not merely to create a “pretty” room, but one that felt deeply personal and meaningful to the Carneys. Every design choice was made with their lifestyle, preferences, and the sheer joy of a large, active family in mind.

Transforming the Foundation: Floors and Paint for a Modern Aesthetic

One of the most critical elements needing immediate attention was the flooring. The old carpet in the room was in desperate need of replacement, especially considering the constant activity generated by little kids and pets. We needed a solution that offered unparalleled durability, ensuring it could withstand spills, scratches, and stains for years to come. Crucially, it also had to be waterproof, DIY-friendly, budget-conscious, and, above all, aesthetically pleasing. After extensive research, ProCore Floors luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring emerged as the perfect choice, ticking every single box on our demanding list. Its robust construction and easy maintenance make it an ideal flooring solution for high-traffic family areas, offering both peace of mind and enduring beauty.

The installation process itself was remarkably smooth. Robert and I managed to install the entire room’s flooring and new baseboards in an impressive two days. The ease of installation was a huge bonus, reinforcing our confidence that this durable and stylish flooring will provide the Carneys with years and years of comfortable, worry-free use. We selected the Meadow Oak color, which proved to be the ultimate winner. Its classic medium-dark brown hue offered the perfect balance of warmth and sophistication, ensuring a seamless flow with the existing flooring throughout the rest of the Carney home. The authentic hand-scraped texture of the planks beautifully mimics the look and feel of real hardwood, adding an elevated touch to the entire space without the practical drawbacks of traditional wood.

With the foundation set, our next step was to introduce color and personality through paint. We were thrilled to announce the launch of our very first shade from the Bless’er House Paint Color Collection with Romabio during this project! For the walls, we chose Romabio Low Lustre Interior paint in Feather. This timeless, modern neutral hue possesses a subtle gray undertone, making it incredibly versatile. It harmonizes beautifully with both warm and cool accents, creating an instantly serene and sophisticated atmosphere—the ideal backdrop for a busy family room. When paired with a strategic “pop” of color, Feather allows that accent to truly take center stage and shine.

For that dynamic pop of color, we meticulously painted the newly installed cabinets in Benjamin Moore Newburg Green. This rich, deep green provides a striking contrast to the neutral walls, injecting personality and depth into the room. The transformation brought about by these paint choices is truly incredible, completely redefining the character of the space and illustrating the immense power of color in interior design.

Ingenious Storage and Smart Furniture for a Multi-Generational Space

When designing for a family of eleven, storage isn’t just a convenience; it’s an absolute necessity. Number one on our priority list for this rec room makeover was undoubtedly creating ample, organized storage. Robert and I dedicated approximately a week to constructing an entire wall of custom-look built-ins, complete with a cozy window seat, all utilizing readily available stock cabinets from Lowe’s. This DIY approach allowed us to maximize both functionality and budget, delivering a high-end look without the custom price tag. The result is a system so expansive that there’s essentially a dedicated cabinet for every child in the family, plus a few extra for the adults – truly, everyone gets a cabinet!

While the custom window seat cushion is still on its way, once it arrives, this area will transform into a delightful reading nook. Bathed in natural light, it will offer a perfect quiet escape for the kids to dive into their favorite books or simply relax. This thoughtful integration of storage and a comfortable seating area demonstrates our commitment to creating zones that serve multiple purposes within a single space, a vital aspect of designing for large families.

Dedicated Entertainment Zone

Central to any recreational room is a space for collective entertainment. We wanted to ensure the Carney family had a comfortable and inviting area where they could all gather to watch movies, play video games, or enjoy board games together. To achieve this, we cleverly incorporated a dedicated entertainment center directly into the custom built-ins, providing a seamless and integrated home for their television and media devices. This design keeps the technology neatly organized while allowing the family to enjoy shared leisure time without clutter.

Embracing Multi-Functional Furniture

In a room designed to serve many purposes and accommodate many people, multi-functional furniture is paramount. Recognizing that a full-sized foosball table wouldn’t be practical given the space constraints, we discovered this ingenious foosball coffee table. It’s an absolute game-changer, serving as both a functional coffee table for everyday use and a fun gaming station for impromptu matches. This piece perfectly embodies the spirit of versatility required for a dynamic family room.

To enhance its dual functionality, we styled the coffee table with a selection of educational books, a lifelike faux plant (to avoid any messy spills or maintenance), and a couple of classic wooden games. These items are easily moved aside whenever the mood strikes for a lively round of foosball, ensuring the space remains adaptable and ready for any activity.

The family’s dog also needed a dedicated spot. Knowing they typically used a crate in this room, we sought a more integrated and aesthetically pleasing solution. Our find was this fantastic dog crate end table. It’s an excellent example of furniture that is both highly functional, providing a secure and comfortable space for their furry friend, and utterly charming, blending seamlessly with the room’s decor.

To prepare for impromptu sleepovers and accommodate extra guests, we strategically incorporated this versatile sleeper sofa from IKEA. Not only does it provide comfortable seating for daily use, but it also effortlessly converts into an extra bed. An added benefit is the integrated storage space, perfect for tucking away extra pillows and blankets, keeping the room tidy. The washable slipcovers are another thoughtful feature, offering peace of mind against inevitable spills and ensuring easy maintenance in a busy household.

Thoughtful Decor and Personalized Art

When it came to decor, we allowed ourselves to be a little playful with patterns and prints – after all, if you can’t go a little wild in a rec room, where can you? This space was the perfect canvas for injecting fun and personality. Our entire design scheme began with the selection of two stunning rugs: Rug 1 and Rug 2 from Boutique Rugs. These beautiful pieces expertly blend all the colors we wanted to feature – teal, navy, rust, blush, olive green, taupe, and cream – serving as a cohesive foundation for the room’s vibrant palette. Beyond their visual appeal, these rugs are unbelievably soft, making them ideal for younger children to comfortably sprawl out on with their toys during playtime. (Don’t forget, you can use code BLESSERHOUSE60 to get 60% off your Boutique Rugs purchase!)

For flexible, overflow seating, we incorporated several jute poufs. These versatile pieces can be easily moved around, allowing kids and adults alike to sit comfortably around the coffee table for board games, puzzles, or just casual conversation, promoting interaction and togetherness.

Personalized Wall Art

To create a true statement and tie all the room’s vibrant colors together, we designed a striking gallery wall featuring a set of vintage car prints from Society6. This collection adds a dynamic and artistic focal point, instantly drawing the eye. A delightful detail within this art collection is a panther perched atop one car and a tiger on another. This subtle yet meaningful touch was “puuurrrrfect” (pun intended!) for the Carney family, who are ardent fans of the Carolina Panthers and Clemson University. Such personalized elements make the space truly their own.

Beyond the themed art, we also showcased some of their cherished family photos, elegantly displayed in modern acrylic frames, adding a warm, personal touch to the walls. To address the room’s low ceilings and make the window appear larger, we employed a clever design trick: we outside-mounted cordless Roman shades and hung curtains high and wide. This method elongates the windows and gives the illusion of greater ceiling height, enhancing the overall sense of spaciousness.

Given that we didn’t have room for a traditional loveseat, we opted for this incredibly comfortable chair-and-a-half from IKEA. Its generous proportions mean that a couple of kids can snuggle up in it at a time, providing another versatile seating option for reading, gaming, or simply unwinding.

Creative Zone: Homework & Craft Area Designed for Productivity and Fun

Dedicated homework and craft area with a small table and colorful decor

Designing a dedicated homework and craft area presented a unique challenge due to a large sliding door on one side of the room, which required maintaining clear traffic flow to the outside. Our solution was this perfectly sized small square table. It offers ample surface space for arts and crafts projects or collaborative homework sessions, yet it leaves plenty of room for easy movement around the area. This thoughtful placement ensures that creativity and productivity can flourish without impeding access.

Above this table, we hung a charming display board, repurposed from an antique store find. This board provides a fantastic spot for the kids to showcase their latest artwork, pin up important memos, or even display inspiring quotes, fostering a sense of ownership and creative expression. Adjacent to this, we included this clean white desk. It’s designed with intelligent storage solutions, featuring space for a couple of storage baskets and a discreet compartment at the back specifically for wrangling computer cords. This ensures a tidy workspace, free from visual clutter, which is essential for concentration.

To further enhance the practicality of this creative zone, particularly for potentially messy art projects or snack times, we incorporated these stylish leather chairs. They are incredibly easy to wipe clean, making them durable and forgiving, yet they don’t compromise on comfort or support. This ensures that the kids can spend hours on their projects without discomfort.

And of course, no craft area would be complete without an antique sugar mold – a beloved organizational tool we also use in our own playroom. It’s absolutely perfect for neatly holding and displaying a vibrant collection of colored pencils, encouraging artistic exploration. Now, the Carney kids have a beautiful, organized, and inviting space where they can color their hearts out, delve into creative projects, or diligently pour over their homework as needed.

A Transformation Beyond Expectation

We can’t resist one more before-and-after shot, just because the transformation is so dramatic and truly inspiring. It’s still hard to believe that we managed to pull off this entire rec room makeover in under four weeks! The sheer scale of the project, combined with the comprehensive changes, makes this timeline a testament to careful planning and dedicated effort.

Striking before and after comparison of the rec room

Of course, we’re realistic – it’ll probably take even less time for those nine energetic kids to “redecorate” it with their everyday play, just as ours do! But that’s truly the beauty and charm of any well-loved rec room, playroom, or game room. The most cherished spaces are often the ones that get a little messy from all the living, creating, and laughing that happens within their walls. We are incredibly excited for all the countless fun memories, shared moments, and creative adventures that the Carney family will undoubtedly make in their vibrant new multi-functional family hub!
