Hi everyone! Beth here from Beth’s Journal Boutique, delighted to share my June project with you. The arrival of summer always brings a wonderful sense of renewal, and I hope you’re all enjoying beautiful weather wherever you are in the world! For me, this season is synonymous with spending time outdoors, tending to my garden, watering the blossoms, and discovering new growth. It’s a truly peaceful and rewarding experience. If you’re familiar with my work, you’ll know my passion for creating folio journals. In celebration of summer’s charm, I conceptualized this particular piece as a dedicated summer garden theme folio. My vision was for it to serve as a practical tool for planning garden plantings and container arrangements, offering ample space for notes, observations, and progress photos. Imagine being able to reference your gardening journey year after year, tracking successes and learning opportunities within these beautiful pages.
The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership Site is an absolute treasure trove for projects like this. Its extensive collection of bundles provided an abundance of perfect images and ephemera that truly brought my vision to life. To help you recreate this journal or simply inspire your own designs, I’ve compiled a list of all the specific bundles I utilized, which you’ll find at the conclusion of this post. Let’s dive into the details of how this Summer Garden Folio Journal came to be!
Crafting the Perfect Summer Garden Folio Journal
Creating a sturdy and beautiful foundation is key to any lasting journal. For this Summer Garden Folio, I began with a robust base, ensuring it could withstand years of use and interaction. The thoughtful construction not only provides durability but also adds to the tactile pleasure of holding and using the journal.
The Foundation: Building Your Folio Journal Base
The core structure of this folio journal was meticulously crafted using three pieces of substantial 65-pound cardstock, chosen for its strength and ability to hold shape. When completed, the folio measures a convenient 4.5 x 8.25 inches, a perfect size for both carrying and displaying. As you can see in the accompanying photograph, I carefully scored a central spine to allow the journal to open and close smoothly. On each side of this spine, I incorporated flip-outs, enhancing the interactive nature of the folio. These flip-outs were designed with a ¼ inch gusset, providing crucial depth and space for additional elements and preventing bulk when the journal is closed.
To ensure maximum durability and longevity, the flip-outs were securely attached using a combination of score tape for initial placement and Fabri-Tac glue for an unbreakable bond. This dual-adhesive approach guarantees that every component of the journal remains firmly in place, even with frequent handling. Once the foundational base was complete, I moved on to applying the background papers. These papers were carefully backed onto distressed kraft paper, an intentional choice that instantly imparted a beloved shabby, vintage feel to the entire piece. These multiple layers, combined with the initial cardstock, contribute significantly to the overall sturdiness, creating a very resilient and beautiful cover for the folio. The final structural touch involved sewing an envelope into each of the two gussets, offering immediate storage solutions, and a signature (a collection of folded pages) directly into the spine, ready for journaling.
Adorning the Cover: A Tapestry of Roses and Vintage Charm
The cover is, of course, the first impression of any journal, and for this Summer Garden Folio, I wanted to evoke a sense of timeless elegance and natural beauty. My choice for the focal image was a truly exquisite rose from The Graphics Fairy’s “Rose is a Rose” bundle. Its delicate petals and rich hues perfectly capture the essence of a summer garden. To further enhance its vintage appeal, I meticulously edged the image with gold rub n’ buff, which imparts a subtle, aged metallic sheen that catches the light beautifully. This central rose motif was then carefully backed with kraft paper, which I deliberately aged around the edges to create a soft, worn look that complements the overall shabby chic aesthetic.
As a final, authentic touch, I strategically added some aged tape to the cover. This seemingly small detail significantly contributes to the perception of history and adds to the cherished, well-loved feel of a true vintage piece. The background paper chosen for the cover is another personal favorite of mine, sourced from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle. Its intricate patterns and faded charm provide the perfect canvas for the focal rose. Like the rose image, this background paper also received a delicate touch of gold rub n’ buff along its edges, harmonizing the entire composition and ensuring a cohesive, beautifully aged finish.
Unveiling the Inside: Pockets, Tabs, and Journaling Delights
Opening the Summer Garden Folio Journal reveals a world of intricate details, thoughtful design, and abundant space for creative expression. Each section is designed to surprise and delight, offering both beauty and utility for the user.
Upon opening the front flip-out, you are greeted with a charming arrangement designed for both visual appeal and practical storage. For the background, I selected the delightful washi tape image from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle. This printable instantly adds a layer of texture and visual interest, mimicking the look of authentic vintage tape. Layered over this, I crafted a simple yet elegant kraft paper pocket, embellished with a delicate strip of lace, which introduces a touch of softness and refinement. A small piece of aged tape further enhances the distressed aesthetic, tying into the cover’s theme.
Within this pocket, I’ve tucked a beautifully designed journaling card. To make it even more special, I added a decorative tab, inviting the user to pull it out and discover what lies within. Accompanying this card are some exquisite “Catherina Kleine Birds” images, carefully nestled within a small vintage glassine envelope. These tiny, delicate bird illustrations add a whimsical and natural element, perfectly complementing the garden theme and offering charming snippets of beauty to be enjoyed.
Moving further into the journal, I created another inviting element: a journaling card designed to function as a delightful pocket. This card features a charming vase of flowers, an image that immediately reinforces the garden theme. To achieve that coveted vintage, shabby look, I backed this journaling card onto robust kraft paper, providing both durability and a wonderful aged texture. Adjacent to this, I thoughtfully sewed an expandable envelope into the gusset. This particular envelope was created using a template from The Graphics Fairy’s “Envelope Templates” bundle, which I traced onto a beautiful printable from the “Parisian Pinks” bundle. The result is a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing expandable envelope, perfect for storing larger ephemera, seeds, or perhaps even small botanical clippings collected during your garden adventures.
Adding Depth and Utility: Creative Inserts for Garden Notes
To maximize the utility and visual appeal of the journal, I incorporated various inserts and interactive elements. These not only provide additional journaling space but also add layers of texture and visual interest, making each turn of the page a new discovery.
One engaging feature I included is a small bag clipped to a sheet of graph paper. This clever addition instantly provides extra space, whether for documenting specific plantings, jotting down garden observations, or adhering progress photos. The image adorning the bag is a beautifully scaled-down version of a journaling page found within the versatile “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle. This not only enhances the visual storytelling but also introduces a lovely textural contrast, enriching the overall aesthetic and tactile experience of the journal. The combination of different papers and elements adds a dynamic quality, inviting more interaction and exploration.
To further enhance the interactive nature of the journal, I added a delicate lace pocket directly onto a coffee-dyed policy envelope. The coffee-dying process lends the envelope a beautiful, aged patina, complementing the vintage theme perfectly. Within this charming lace pocket, you’ll find an exquisitely embossed tag, offering a lovely textural element, alongside a decorative journaling spot. This spot is ideal for quick notes, important dates, or small sketches related to your garden. These layered elements create an inviting space for both functional use and aesthetic pleasure.
Throughout the journal, I strategically incorporated printables of varying sizes and colors, simply clipped into the pages. This method provides flexible and removable additional documenting space, allowing the user to customize their journaling experience. These versatile inserts can be easily repositioned, used as bookmarks, or removed entirely and utilized elsewhere, offering complete freedom for personalization and ongoing organization of your garden thoughts and plans.
One of the most practical and aesthetically pleasing additions to this folio journal is the full journal-size expandable pocket. This substantial pocket was beautifully created using a printable from The Graphics Fairy’s “Delicate End Papers” bundle. The intricate patterns of this bundle provide a sophisticated backdrop, elevating the functionality of the pocket. To complete its design and ensure its contents are secure, I added a charming closure system featuring disks and string. This not only adds a lovely vintage touch but also makes the pocket incredibly useful for storing larger items that might not fit elsewhere. Imagine tucking away garden receipts, seed packets, botanical illustrations, or even pressed flowers collected during your outdoor adventures. It’s a dedicated space designed to keep all your garden-related treasures safe and organized.
The Back Cover and Final Touches
The inside back cover mirrors the elegant design of the front inside cover, ensuring a harmonious and balanced aesthetic throughout the folio. Here, I’ve once again utilized the lovely washi tape printable from the “Tattered Paper Treasures 2” bundle as the background. This repeated element provides a sense of continuity and reinforces the journal’s cohesive theme. Just like the front, I included a charming corner pocket, offering immediate storage for small notes or collected ephemera. Within this pocket, you’ll discover a beautifully designed decorative journaling card and a larger journaling page, providing ample space for extensive writing, sketching, or additional photo placements. This ensures that every inch of the journal is both functional and visually appealing, inviting continuous engagement.
This Summer Garden Folio Journal is truly brimming with delightful details and a diverse array of journaling spaces, each thoughtfully integrated to inspire creativity and organization. Beyond the elements already mentioned, I’ve incorporated a fun notepad featuring papers of varying sizes, perfect for impromptu notes, gardening lists, or quick sketches. Additionally, a long envelope has been securely sewn into the back gusset, providing another discreet storage solution for larger items or private keepsakes. Creating this summer garden folio journal has been an absolute joy, blending my love for crafting with the beauty of the natural world. I am incredibly pleased with how this unique style of journal has come together and am already envisioning more projects in this versatile format for the future! Thank you so much for taking the time to explore this creation with me. I eagerly anticipate returning soon to share my next project. Until then, I wish you all a wonderful and inspiring summer!
