Sharon Coughlin’s Forager’s Junk Journal: A Personal Journey

Hello everyone, it’s Sharon from Mad Paper Crush again! I’m so excited to share my sixth and final journal project for my design team term with The Graphics Fairy. It has truly been an incredible journey, filled with endless creativity and joy, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this amazing team. The journal I’m delighted to share with you today is titled ‘The Forager’s Journal,’ a deeply personal project inspired by my profound love for hiking through serene woodlands and discovering the fascinating world of wild edibles. Come along, let’s explore its depths together!

This unique journal began its life as a cherished, well-loved Girl Scout Handbook, perfectly embodying the spirit of adventure and exploration. Measuring approximately 5×7 inches, it features a sturdy 1½-inch fabric spine, providing both durability and a touch of rustic charm. The closure is also crafted from fabric, meticulously designed with eyelets on each side. Through these eyelets, I’ve threaded black leather cording, allowing the entire book to be securely cinched shut, keeping all its treasures safely tucked inside. To personalize the front cover, I added a charming ATC (Artist’s Trading Card) adorned with vibrant strawberries—because, really, who can resist the allure of freshly picked wild strawberries? Furthermore, I incorporated a broken piece of an antique folding ruler, securing it firmly to the front cover to enhance its vintage appeal and add a unique structural element. The entire closure mechanism is designed to be easily untied and slipped off, granting effortless access to the journal’s captivating interior. As you observe the picture, you might also notice a small, intriguing box tied with a delicate bow—its contents are a secret you’ll uncover as you delve deeper into the journal!

Upon opening this beautifully transformed handbook, you’re immediately greeted by authentic vintage treasures. The original book already contained a gracefully aged linen envelope, carefully glued into place, alongside an old badge test card and a sweet, tiny handwritten note featuring the words to the Star-Spangled Banner. These charming pieces, with their inherent history and beauty, were simply too precious to remove, so I decided they should remain an integral part of the journal’s narrative. My opening signature page is thoughtfully designed with a rustic pocket, created from some old, gauzy fabric, adding a delicate, tactile element. Inside this pocket, I’ve placed a collaged tag, meticulously crafted using a fussy cut image from The Graphics Fairy’s Pressed Wild Fern kit, beautifully combined with a title page graphic from the Naturalist’s Library kit. This initial spread instantly sets the tone for an adventure through nature, blending repurposed elements with exquisite digital vintage imagery.

As we delve deeper, you’ll discover a clever feature strategically placed within the middle of several signatures: a practical pocket meticulously created around my stitching. This pocket ingeniously utilizes printable journal pages from The Graphics Fairy’s Herbal Apothecary Shoppe kit. I’ve playfully shrunk these pages down even further to craft a charming, miniature field notes journal card, perfectly sized to tuck inside. This thoughtful addition underscores the journal’s purpose: to serve as a companion for outdoor explorations. When venturing out on a hike, it’s immensely valuable to have a dedicated space to jot down essential observations—details about where you’ve discovered an abundance of wonderful plants, their characteristics, and the surrounding environment. This feature transforms the journal into an indispensable tool for any passionate forager or nature enthusiast, encouraging mindful engagement with the natural world.

This particular spread beautifully showcases the reverse side of the ingenious pocket we just admired, alongside a distinctive label I digitally crafted myself. This custom label was created by combining intricate pieces from The Graphics Fairy’s Black and White Apothecary Label kit and the enchanting Owls and Mushrooms kit. I had an absolute blast designing these labels, and you’ll notice many variations thoughtfully scattered throughout the entire journal, each adding a unique touch. Some of these labels even feature cleverly incorporated blank spaces, providing perfect spots for writing personal notes, observations, or dates—a truly practical and aesthetically pleasing detail for any serious forager.

Moving on, this captivating spread highlights another of the exquisite printable journal pages from our collection. This particular design originated from The Graphics Fairy’s Bittersweet Hues kit, and I absolutely adore the striking contrast of colors it brings to the page, adding depth and visual interest. The right side of this spread is beautifully adorned with elements from the washi-tape collection found in the Tattered Paper Treasures 2 kit. To achieve this charming effect, I printed these designs onto a clear full sheet label and then meticulously cut them apart. I find that incorporating washi tape in this manner, both throughout the journal pages and onto various pieces of ephemera, is a fantastic way to create visual cohesion and truly pull all the diverse elements of the journal together into a harmonious whole. It’s a subtle yet powerful technique that enhances the overall aesthetic and tactile experience.

For any dedicated forager, an understanding of fungi is absolutely essential, which is why I was thrilled to discover this incredible page filled with detailed mushroom illustrations in The Graphics Fairy’s Woodland Wonders kit. I knew immediately that it had to be a focal point in this journal. To give it an authentic, well-aged appearance, I decided to print it on manilla drawing paper, which instantly imbued it with an antiqued look. I then carefully folded it and gently “grunged” up the edges, adding subtle distressed textures that make it look wonderfully well-used and cherished over time. This page not only serves as a beautiful visual element but also as a practical reference, perfectly aligning with the journal’s foraging theme.

Throughout the journal, I’ve strategically incorporated various tuck spots, providing charming little hideaways for ephemera and notes. This particular tuck spot, crafted from beautiful papers found in the Tattered Paper Treasures 2 kit, cradles a delightful collaged tag I meticulously created. This tag incorporates some of the original papers from the host book, adding another layer of history and texture, along with additional paper bits for visual interest. A crucial element on this tag is a small compass—because, as any seasoned hiker knows, a reliable compass is an indispensable tool for navigating the wild. This thoughtful inclusion not only reinforces the journal’s theme but also adds a practical, adventurous touch to the overall design.

This engaging spread offers a glimpse into the reverse side of another meticulously crafted signature pocket, fashioned using elements from the versatile Herbal Apothecary Shoppe kit. Complementing this, I’ve designed a charming collaged pocket, embellished with a delicate piece of an old crocheted doily, which adds a beautiful touch of vintage lace and softness. Tucked within this pocket is another custom-made label, thoughtfully created using graphics from the Black and White Apothecary Label kit. The tag tucked securely within this pocket is a piece of art in itself, featuring an array of fussy cuts and intricate collage work, all beautifully crowned with a soft, flowing piece of sari ribbon. The rich textures and layered elements on this spread invite tactile exploration and admiration.

These absolutely adorable mushroom cards are sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s captivating Bittersweet Hues kit. Their charming illustrations make them perfect visual references for any forager embarking on a woodland adventure, especially during the vibrant hues of autumn. The page on the right side of this spread features another captivating graphic from the Tattered Paper Treasures 2 kit, which I printed onto more manilla drawing paper. This choice of paper, combined with subtle distressing, gives it a wonderfully “well-used” and authentically aged feel. I truly enjoy adding these beautiful, intricate designs to the journal, as they seamlessly blend aesthetic appeal with thematic relevance.

If I had to choose a single favorite element in this journal – and believe me, it’s an incredibly tough decision! – it would undoubtedly be this ingenious creation. I crafted a charming little foldable magnifying glass using beautiful papers from both The Graphics Fairy’s Tattered Paper Treasures 2 and Bittersweet Hues kits. The magnifier is cleverly attached with a brad, allowing it to swivel smoothly down into a protective pocket for safekeeping, ensuring it’s always secure yet easily accessible. The entire assembly then tucks neatly into a larger pocket on this page, which is adorned with a delicate fussy cut image of luscious wild raspberries. This feature is not just adorable; it’s a brilliant, functional detail that truly enhances the interactive and practical nature of a forager’s journal, perfect for examining tiny leaves or insect wings up close!

The Tattered Paper Treasures 2 kit generously includes a delightful printable envelope design, and knowing that envelopes are such fun and versatile additions to any journal, I simply had to incorporate this one! I’ve added a charming pocket to the outside of the envelope, perfect for tucking away small finds, and within this pocket, I’ve placed another exquisite ATC card sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s Berries and Cherries kit. Inside the envelope itself, you’ll discover another carefully collaged note card—a truly ideal spot for keeping those precious foraging notes, dried botanical samples, or tiny sketches safe and organized. It’s an elegant solution for carrying invaluable memories and discoveries from your outdoor adventures.

Here, you can admire another one of the bespoke labels I meticulously created using elements from The Graphics Fairy’s versatile Black and White Apothecary Labels kit. This time, I’ve thoughtfully enhanced it with a beautiful graphic of dill, sourced from the comprehensive Herbal Apothecary Shoppe kit, adding a botanical touch. What makes this particular tag truly special is its unique foundation: it was crafted entirely on a piece of a glassine bag. I absolutely adore the way it subtly crinkles and rustles when handled, adding a delightful tactile dimension and an authentic vintage feel that perfectly complements the foraging theme.

This vibrant spread showcases even more of my favorite elements: mushrooms and labels! It’s no secret that I’m quite the mushroom enthusiast, and this passion is evident throughout the journal. I’ve created the charming pocket on the right-hand side using another custom-designed digital label, complemented by a delightful fussy cut mushroom illustration from The Graphics Fairy’s enchanting Owls and Mushrooms kit. The accompanying card on the right was ingeniously fashioned from an old Rolodex card, providing a sturdy and distinctive base. To add an extra layer of texture and visual interest, I’ve incorporated a piece of fabric onto the card, giving it a wonderfully tactile and mixed-media feel. This combination truly brings the foraging theme to life with rich details.

As we reach the final page of this remarkable journal, you’ll find another thoughtfully integrated label. This time, it’s firmly affixed directly to the page, ingeniously transforming into a functional tuck spot for additional ephemera or cherished notes. To complement this, I’ve crafted another unique journal card, enhancing it with a delicate trim that adds a touch of elegance and finish. My intention for the very back cover was to maintain a sense of simplicity and harmony, allowing it to perfectly mirror the understated elegance of the book’s original front cover. This design choice provides a satisfying sense of completeness and continuity, bringing our journey through The Forager’s Journal to a graceful close.

A Delightful Surprise: Forager Reference Cards!

Now that you’ve journeyed through every captivating page of The Forager’s Journal, I have a delightful little surprise addition to reveal! I’ve created these incredibly charming and practical “forager reference cards,” designed using the beautiful book plate images from The Graphics Fairy’s Herbal Apothecary Shoppe kit. I printed these intricate images at a very small scale, giving them a quaint, collectible feel, and then meticulously backed each one with sturdy cardstock for durability. To house these treasures, I fashioned a custom-made box that fits them perfectly, adorned with yet another lovely fussy cut mushroom from the Owls and Mushrooms kit. This project brought back nostalgic memories of collecting subscription cards for animals as a child, and I believe any passionate forager would absolutely love having a portable set of reference cards to consult while out exploring the woods! It’s the perfect companion for identifying plants and fungi on the go.

Thank you so very much for taking this immersive walk through my Forager’s Journal. I hope it inspires your own creative adventures!
