Mastering the Faux Encaustic Technique for Stunning Mixed Media Art
Welcome, fellow art enthusiasts and creative spirits! Today, we’re diving into a truly enchanting and surprisingly simple crafting method: the Faux Encaustic Technique. This innovative approach allows you to achieve the rich, luminous depth and mysterious atmosphere of traditional encaustic painting without the need for heat tools, wax, or specialized pigments. Get ready to transform ordinary paper prints into extraordinary, multi-layered mixed media artworks that will captivate and inspire!
At The Graphics Fairy, we believe in making beautiful art accessible to everyone. This particular technique, developed through playful experimentation by Heather from Thicketworks, is a testament to that philosophy. It’s a fantastic way to utilize vintage graphics and create pieces with a timeless, romantic appeal.
This technique builds upon the foundations of a previous creation, the DIY Vellum Technique. If you’re eager to explore how we create translucent paper effects, that tutorial offers a wonderful starting point. For our faux encaustic masterpiece, we will be meticulously layering a total of four distinct graphics, each contributing to the ethereal, atmospheric, and deeply romantic feel characteristic of genuine encaustic art.
The beauty of this method lies in its ability to create incredible visual depth. By treating and layering simple paper prints, we can mimic the translucent quality and rich texture of wax-based art, making your final piece look far more complex and professional than the process suggests. It’s an ideal project for beginners in mixed media or seasoned artists looking for a new, accessible technique.

Unlocking Creativity with Graphics Fairy Source Images
The magic of this Faux Encaustic Technique truly comes alive with carefully chosen imagery. For our example, we’ve selected a collection of vintage-inspired graphics that beautifully complement each other and contribute to the desired atmospheric effect. Here are the specific Graphics Fairy images used in this tutorial, each carefully selected to build a cohesive and enchanting scene:
- Elegant Vintage Dragonfly Image: This delicate creature adds a touch of whimsical beauty and acts as a focal point in our top layer.
- Lovely Blue Botanical Flower Stock Image: Soft floral elements introduce color and a natural, organic feel to the middle layers.
- Charming Garden Swings Picture: This image provides a serene background, evoking a sense of peaceful tranquility and nostalgia.
- Dramatic Black and White Castle Graphic: The foundational layer, offering a sense of history, grandeur, and a striking silhouette.
Remember, the beauty of mixed media is the freedom to experiment! Feel free to explore the vast Graphics Fairy archives to find images that resonate with your personal style. Consider how different elements will interact when layered, thinking about transparency, contrast, and overall composition. The right selection of images is the first step towards creating a truly unique and captivating piece of faux encaustic art.
Essential Supplies for Your Faux Encaustic Masterpiece
To embark on this exciting journey of creating layered Mixed Media Art with the Faux Encaustic Technique, gather the following supplies. Each item plays a crucial role in achieving the desired translucent and ethereal effect:
- Several Images: Choose images that are printed on plain old printer paper (not photo paper) and sized to layer nicely together. Both inkjet or laser prints are perfectly fine for this technique. The porosity of standard printer paper is essential for the baby oil to absorb properly.
- Baby Oil: This seemingly unconventional ingredient is key to achieving the translucent quality. Its light consistency and pleasant, subtle scent make it an ideal choice for saturating the paper without leaving heavy residues or strong odors. Other light oils *might* work, but baby oil is consistently reliable.
- A soft Paint Brush: A medium-sized flat brush is perfect for applying the baby oil evenly and for spreading the Triple Thick Gloss Glaze smoothly across your layers.
- A clean, absorbent cloth: Essential for wiping away excess oil and ensuring a clean work surface between steps. Microfiber cloths or old cotton t-shirts work wonderfully.
- A Heat Tool: While not strictly for curing, a heat tool (like those used in embossing or for drying watercolors) will significantly speed up the evaporation of any lingering moisture from your paper after tinting.
- Gelatos or other ‘blendable’ media: These vibrant, creamy pigment sticks are perfect for adding subtle color washes to your images. Their water-soluble nature makes them easy to blend for a soft, painterly effect.
- Water: A small dish of water will be used for blending the Gelatos, allowing you to create smooth, watercolor-like transitions.
- Scissors or a Paper Trimmer: For precise cutting of your images along their borders. A paper trimmer ensures clean, straight edges.
- Triple Thick Gloss Glaze: This high-gloss, clear adhesive and sealant is vital for creating the laminated layers and providing the signature thick, glassy finish. Its robust formula ensures durability and a beautiful sheen.
- A sharp Craft Blade: Essential for carefully freeing your finished artwork from the work surface once the glaze has fully cured.
- A sturdy Metal Ruler: Use this as a guide with your craft blade for straight, precise cuts when detaching the finished piece.
- A non-porous work surface: This is crucial! Think of a glazed ceramic tile, a sturdy sheet of glass, or a non-stick craft mat. This surface needs to be smooth and capable of having a craft blade drawn over it without damage. It will allow the finished piece to peel off cleanly.
Optional Enhancements:
- A 3″ x 4.5″ Matte or Picture Frame: For displaying your finished faux encaustic artwork. The size is adaptable, so choose a frame that complements your trimmed piece.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Employ the Faux Encaustic Technique
Follow these detailed steps to create your own captivating layered artwork. Precision and patience are your best tools!
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
Begin by ensuring you are working on a clean, non-porous work surface. This is critical for the final step where you’ll peel your finished artwork. A ceramic tile or a glass sheet is ideal. Make sure it’s a surface that can withstand the gentle glide of a craft blade without being scratched or damaged.
Step 2: Saturate Images with Baby Oil
Using your paint brush, generously paint the surface of your printed graphics with Baby Oil. Ensure full coverage across the entire image. The oil will immediately begin to soak into the paper, transforming it into a translucent medium. This is where the magic begins, mimicking the light-filtering quality of wax.
Continue this process until you have thoroughly coated all four of your selected images. Lay them flat to allow the oil to fully penetrate the paper fibers.
Step 3: Remove Excess Oil
Once the oil has soaked in, use a clean, absorbent cloth to gently wipe away any excess oil from both the front and the back of each print. You want the paper to be translucent but not greasy. This step prevents smudges and prepares the surface for coloring. Afterward, it’s wise to clean your work surface to remove any oil residue.
Step 4: Tint Images with Gelatos
Now, let’s add some subtle color. Select a misty, complementary color of Gelato (a pale blue or green works well for a romantic look), and scribble a light & loose border around the Flowers Image. Don’t worry about perfection; the blending will soften it beautifully.
Dip your finger in a small amount of water, and gently blend the color on the paper until it becomes smooth and very subtle. The goal is a delicate tint, not an opaque block of color. This blending creates a soft, ethereal glow.
Next, grab a couple of shades of blue Gelato and scribble a loose ‘sky’ effect on the Castle Image. To enhance the reflection, add blue and green scribbles to the watery area at the bottom of the castle. These subtle additions will bring life and depth to the monochrome graphic.
Once again, gently blend with your fingertips, using a tiny bit of water as needed, to create a softly romantic and integrated effect. The translucency of the oiled paper allows these colors to shine through beautifully.
Step 5: Evaporate Moisture
To ensure your papers are ready for the next step, use a Heat Tool to gently evaporate any remaining moisture from the paper, especially from the areas where you blended the Gelatos. This prevents buckling and ensures a smooth lamination process.
Step 6: Trim Your Images
Carefully trim each of the images along its borders. Precision here will contribute to a clean, professional-looking final piece. A paper trimmer is highly recommended for achieving perfectly straight edges.
Step 7: Visualize Your Layers
Before applying any glaze, take a moment to arrange your trimmed images to visualize how they will ‘stack’ up. For this project, the suggested order from bottom to top is:
- Castle (the foundational layer)
- Garden Swings (the mid-ground)
- Flowers (adding immediate visual interest)
- Dragonfly (the delicate, topmost focal point)
This stacking order is designed to create a sense of depth and narrative within the artwork, with elements gradually revealing themselves through the translucent layers.
Step 8: Begin Layering with Triple Thick Glaze
Place the Castle Image, your bottom layer, precisely onto your smooth, clean, non-porous work surface. Ensure it is positioned exactly where you want your finished piece to be, as it will remain fixed here until fully cured.
Apply a generous, even coat of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze to the entire surface of this first image. Crucially, make certain to extend your brushstrokes beyond the boundaries of the image, onto the work surface. This creates a continuous layer of glaze that will encapsulate all subsequent images and allow for clean removal later.
While the Triple Thick is still wet and tacky, carefully place the Garden Swings Image directly on top of the first glazed layer, aligning it as desired. Immediately apply another generous layer of Triple Thick over this newly placed image and the entire layered stack.
Repeat this meticulous process for the remaining images: first with the Flowers Image, ensuring it’s centered and aligned, and finally, with the delicate Dragonfly Image as the topmost layer. Each layer should be adhered while the previous glaze coat is still wet to create a seamless, encapsulated effect.
Step 9: Apply the Final Coat
Once all images are stacked and glazed, apply a final, smooth, and even coat of Triple Thick over all stacked layers. Work carefully to minimize visible brush strokes, aiming for a consistent, glassy surface. This last layer will provide the signature thick, domed appearance often found in traditional encaustic art.
Step 10: Allow for Complete Drying and Curing
Now comes the most important part: patience! Allow the entire layered piece to dry naturally and completely. Depending on the ambient temperature and humidity levels, drying times will significantly vary. While it might feel dry to the touch in a few hours, for optimal strength and non-stick properties, you should aim for a minimum of 2 hours before handling, but ideally 12-24 hours for a full cure. Resist the urge to touch or move it too soon!
Step 11: Free Your Artwork
Once the Triple Thick has completely cured and hardened, it’s time to release your masterpiece. Place your metal ruler along one edge of your artwork, and with a sharp craft blade, carefully slice through the perimeter where the glaze has extended onto your work surface. Maintain steady pressure for a clean cut.
Carefully use the edge of your craft blade to gently pry up one corner of the laminated piece. Once an edge is lifted, you can then carefully and slowly peel the entire finished artwork off the non-porous surface. If it’s fully cured, it should come off cleanly, leaving a smooth, glossy back.
The Magical Results: Translucent & Versatile Art
The moment you peel off your creation, you’ll be amazed! The material is beautifully translucent, yet surprisingly thick and sturdy. The Faux Encaustic Technique has resulted in a durable, layered art piece that is truly ready to use in a myriad of creative ways!
The inherent translucency of the final piece opens up a world of possibilities. Here, we’ve temporarily mounted it over a night light to showcase how the light filters through the layers, creating a mesmerizing glow. Imagine making several of these to adorn various spaces in your home – they are truly so pretty and add a unique touch to any decor.
Beyond backlighting, the soft and misty result looks equally lovely mounted in a traditional frame. The depth created by the layered images gives the illusion of a much more complex and time-intensive art form, making it a perfect statement piece for any room. The glossy finish of the Triple Thick Glaze enhances the colors and the overall luxurious feel.
Take a moment to appreciate this final closeup of the layered images. You can clearly see how each graphic contributes to the overall narrative and texture of the piece. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the subtle tints of the Gelatos, creates an incredibly romantic atmosphere that layering these translucent images so effectively achieves. This technique is perfect for capturing a vintage aesthetic with a modern, mixed-media twist.
