Hello everyone, I’m Lynne from Mockingbird & Main, and it’s an absolute thrill to be back collaborating with The Graphics Fairy Junk Journal Design Team. For this particular project, my inaugural journal back with the team, I was drawn once again to one of my all-time favorite themes: Steampunk. The allure of Steampunk lies in its fantastical and wonderfully whimsical nature, offering a unique blend of Victorian elegance and speculative retrofuturistic technology. It’s a genre that truly sparks the imagination, inviting us to envision a world of incredible wonders and ingenious inventions that, sadly, never quite materialized in the 1800s.

Steampunk allows for unparalleled creative freedom. You can let your imagination soar, crafting narratives and aesthetics that are both historically inspired and wildly imaginative. My hope is that this journal will ignite a similar spark in you, encouraging you to explore the limitless possibilities within this captivating theme. With the vast array of Steampunk and 1800s Victorian images available within The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership bundles, the creative sky truly is the limit for bringing your own fantastical visions to life.

Crafting The Inventor’s Guild: A Narrative Journey

This particular journal is titled “The Inventor’s Guild,” and it serves as the personal chronicle belonging to the esteemed leader of a clandestine group of brilliant inventors. This guild harbors a profound fascination with mechanical devices, intricate contraptions, and, most notably, magnificent flying apparatuses – with hot air balloons holding a special place in their hearts. To imbue the members of this distinguished group with a sense of identity and history, I meticulously selected a variety of vintage photos. These striking portraits were sourced from both the Antique Portraits and Antique Portraits 2 Bundles, each image carefully chosen to represent the intellectual curiosity and pioneering spirit of the guild’s members.

Bringing Characters to Life: Vintage Portraits & Ephemera

A pivotal moment in the journal’s creation came when I discovered the captivating Altoid Tin Sheet within the Masculine Ephemera Bundle. The moment I saw those four distinguished gentlemen, I knew instantly that they were destined to be integral members of my inventor’s group. With a slight reduction in size, I transformed these compelling images into charming mini cabinet cards, giving each inventor a unique presence within the journal’s pages. This subtle detail helps to establish the backstory and personalities of the guild members, making the journal feel like a genuine artifact from a bygone era.

To add a striking visual contrast and a dash of rich color to the otherwise grungy, industrial aesthetic of the journal, I incorporated the vibrant card player label. Also hailing from the versatile Masculine Ephemera Bundle, this piece provided precisely the pop of color and visual interest needed to balance the journal’s overall tone. It’s details like these that elevate a junk journal from a simple collection of papers to a curated artistic statement.

Every esteemed guild needs a loyal companion, and for The Inventor’s Guild, that companion is a charming dog whose vintage photo can be found in the Masculine Elements Bundle. This particular image holds a delightful little secret that I eagerly anticipate revealing to you during the flip-through video. It’s a testament to the hidden wonders and interactive elements designed to surprise and engage the viewer as they explore the journal’s depths.

Interactive Design: Engaging the Viewer

When approaching the design of this journal, I was keen to create a more interactive experience. Steampunk, with its inherent fascination with gears, mechanisms, and discoverable elements, truly lends itself to this hands-on approach. To achieve this, I crafted an elaborate collaged pocket directly on the journal’s cover. This pocket isn’t merely decorative; it features dynamic moving parts and cleverly concealed secret compartments, inviting exploration and discovery from the very first glance. The strategic addition of various metal embellishments, both on the cover and throughout the journal’s interior, further accentuates the authentic Steampunk aesthetic, adding tactile depth and a wonderful industrial charm.

As hot air balloons are a central motif for The Inventor’s Guild, I extensively utilized several breathtaking graphics from the Steampunk Images 2 Bundle. These magnificent illustrations were instrumental in creating a variety of functional and beautiful elements within the journal, including intricate pockets and charming journaling ephemera. Their detailed designs and vintage appeal make them truly beautiful additions, enhancing the narrative of flight and innovation woven throughout the journal.

The Steampunk Images 3 and Eclectic Steampunk Bundles are treasure troves of fabulous digital stamping images. I found them incredibly useful for crafting a charming mini journal – a journal within a journal – filled with decorative images perfect for embellishing your pages. These elements provide a wonderful layer of texture and detail, inviting further engagement and storytelling.
