The Vision Behind the Vintage: A Creator’s Journey
Greetings everyone, I’m Kath, known in the journaling world as JournalingJunkY. This is my third exciting project for The Graphics Fairy Design Team, and it’s been a joyful challenge! With the overwhelming abundance of truly wonderful bundles available on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site, I initially found myself in quite a delightful quandary, struggling to choose a central theme for my next creation. The sheer variety is a testament to the richness of the resources available!
However, as the enchanting Christmas season begins to subtly creep into our thoughts, the decision became clear. A festive theme was undeniably calling to me. Even within the Christmas category, the choices were incredibly vast, presenting another enjoyable dilemma. Then, I stumbled upon the captivating Retro Christmas digital kit, along with many other exquisite bundles—all of which I’ve thoughtfully listed at the conclusion of this blog post for your convenience.
These vibrant digital images instantly transported me back to the dazzling, joyful Christmases of my childhood. Born in the early 1960s, I vividly remember a holiday season ablaze with a glorious riot of bright, garish colors: rich reds, verdant greens, shimmering golds, and dazzling silvers. Tinsel and streamers adorned every conceivable surface, transforming every room into a festive wonderland, decorated within an inch of its life! This journal is a heartfelt homage to those cherished memories, designed to evoke that same vibrant, nostalgic spirit. The finished journal measures a comfortable 9 inches by 5 ¾ inches, a perfect size for holding precious thoughts and mementos.
Throughout this journal, you’ll notice that most of the pages and ephemera have been lovingly stitched around their edges, adding a delightful tactile texture and a touch of handmade charm. Furthermore, each page features subtle, light stenciling, providing an extra layer of depth and visual interest without overwhelming the vintage imagery. I’m confident that the detailed list of collections I’ve utilized, provided at the end of this article, will be an invaluable resource in your own quest to create that perfect, dream-worthy journal. I genuinely hope you find as much joy in exploring this bright and cheerful journal as I did in bringing it to life. While not every page is fully displayed here, you can experience the complete tour on my dedicated YouTube channel. For those who fall in love with its charm, this very journal is available for sale in my Ko-fi shop.
Crafting the Cover: A Welcoming Gateway to Nostalgia
The journal’s cover is ingeniously crafted in a faux Midori style, offering both flexibility and a distinctive aesthetic. It’s secured with a luxurious red satin ribbon wrap-around fastening, which also elegantly traces the spine. Two charming small golden bells, thoughtfully added to the spine ribbon, provide a whimsical touch and can be easily removed if desired. Every component of this cover, including its sturdy base, has been lovingly handmade. The base itself is enveloped in a wonderful, heavyweight hessian/burlap fabric, giving it a rustic yet refined feel, beautifully accented by striking red stitching that perfectly complements the overall retro theme. Layered beneath this are authentic vintage music paper and charming wrapping paper, creating a rich tapestry of textures and patterns. For the captivating main image on the cover, I printed two copies of the beautiful child illustration. One served as a subtle backing layer, while the second was carefully die-cut and mounted onto kraft card. To introduce delightful dimension, I strategically added foam pads, making the image truly pop. The final embellishments, including delicate vintage lace, pieces of tartan hessian ribbon, and charming buttons, were then thoughtfully arranged in the corners, tying together the entire nostalgic composition.
Page 1: A Grand Entrance with Mr. and Mrs. Claus
For the inaugural page of this festive journal, I simply couldn’t resist the heartwarming charm of Mr. and Mrs. Claus! Their cheerful presence immediately sets a joyous tone. The background is composed of a delightful scrapbook paper, chosen for its vintage appeal and carefully sewn onto tea-dyed paper. This clever layering not only adds visual depth but also creates a perfect, aged-look space ideal for personal journaling. To further enhance the vintage aesthetic, I also added additional tea-dyed paper behind the central images of the Claus couple, and again, meticulously sewed around the edges for a cohesive finish. A functional and beautiful pocket was also crafted from coordinating scrapbook paper, embellished with charming hessian and tartan ribbon, culminating in a lovely little bow. This page is a perfect example of how simple elements can combine to create a truly inviting and functional spread.
Pages 2 & 3: Elves, Santas, and Secret Letters
Moving onto the next delightful spread, the background for the left page features a beautiful tartan scrapbook paper, evoking a classic holiday feel. From the delightful Merry Retro digital bundle, I crafted an adorable tag featuring a charming little elf. Isn’t he simply endearing? To accentuate the image, I carefully applied gold washi tape around its edges, adding a subtle shimmer. A small gold ribbon bow was then fashioned and attached, a strategic choice that brilliantly highlights the rich reds present within the tag’s design. Peeking out from behind, you can just discern a page from a vintage children’s book, adding a layer of charming history and storytelling.
The opposing page ingeniously utilizes another vintage book page as its foundation. Here, I incorporated a die-cut specimen tag, intricately cut from coordinating tartan paper, which adds a structured element. A fussy-cut Santa image was carefully placed upon this tag, adorned with delicate white and green string for an extra touch of festive whimsy. This specimen card is not only decorative but also removable, revealing a hidden treasure: a wonderful envelope containing a blank letter from the “Desk of Santa,” beautifully created using elements from the Nostalgiac Christmas collection. This interactive feature adds an element of delightful surprise and offers another unique journaling spot for future memories.
Pages 4 & 5: Festive Layers and Classic Carols
This heartwarming spread begins with a backing page thoughtfully selected from a Christmas-themed book, instantly grounding the layout in holiday spirit. For the pocket on the left page, I employed a charming scrapbook paper, which then became the foundation for several layers of ephemera sourced from various collections. This layering technique adds wonderful depth and texture, culminating in the elegant fussy-cut image of a lady in a striking red dress, who becomes a focal point. Delicate small elements of lace were also added, enhancing the vintage aesthetic. Furthermore, two pieces of aged ephemera were strategically placed to serve as additional journaling space, inviting personal reflection. For the opposite page, my search for the perfect Christmas-themed papers led me to a vast and inspiring selection. The chosen Christmas Carol page, with its timeless charm, hails from the wonderful Dicken’s Christmas bundle, perfectly embodying the spirit of classic holiday celebrations.
Pages 6 & 7: The Heart of the Journal with Retro Wraps
These pages form the very captivating center of the journal, embodying the essence of retro Christmas. The background papers immediately resonated with me, mirroring the exact style of wrapping paper I fondly remember from the 60s and 70s—I simply had to incorporate them! To create dynamic and functional pockets, I ingeniously printed on both sides of the paper, allowing me to form turn-back sections. The top edges of these charming pockets were then trimmed with festive reindeer ribbon, adding an extra, undeniable Christmassy touch. The accompanying tags were created using elegant oval metal dies. For the front panel of each tag, I added snowflake acetate, introducing a lovely translucent quality. These were then adorned with fussy-cut images of Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with various pieces of Christmas ephemera, clustered together to create delightful mini-scenes. For that extra special touch, I attached small gold bells to each tag, which can be easily removed, offering a playful, jingly embellishment that perfectly captures the joyous spirit of the season.
Pages 8 & 9: Literary Charms and Beloved Dolls
The left-hand page of this engaging spread is thoughtfully sourced from a well-known book featuring a delightful December theme. This provides a natural, pre-formatted canvas that can be directly written upon, or, for those desiring even more space, additional pockets could easily be incorporated to expand the journaling potential. On the right, I’ve once again utilized a printable image, carefully chosen for its distinctly vintage/retro vibe, perfectly aligning with the journal’s overall aesthetic. Here, I crafted another charming pocket and adorned it with lovely crochet lace, a festive red-checked ribbon, and delicate small holographic stars, adding subtle sparkle and texture.
The tag on this page is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite! The central image features classic Kewpie dolls, instantly evoking a sense of sweet nostalgia. Did you ever own a Kewpie doll? I certainly did – I lovingly named mine Suki – and as soon as I encountered this image, I knew it had to be included; it’s simply adorable! To ensure visual harmony, I selected a vibrant green star background that beautifully tones in with the green hues within the Kewpie doll image. The image itself was then mounted onto shimmering gold mirror card, adding a touch of glamour. The final flourish was a delicate gold fabric bow, completing this truly cherished embellishment.
Pages 10 & 11: A Unique Flip-Out Creation
This particular page is a proud achievement, ingeniously designed to flip out and reveal a delightful surprise. What makes this spread truly special is the image on the front – one that I created myself using editing software! This marks a significant personal milestone, as it’s the very first time I’ve attempted anything of this nature. My creative process involved selecting one of the beautiful Christmas music papers as a base, then carefully adding a vintage Christmas tree image and the elegant lady in the red dress, both provided in versatile PNG formats. It took a bit of meticulous finessing to achieve the perfect effect, specifically to make it appear as though the lady was delicately touching the bauble on the tree, but I persevered and am thrilled with the final result. Once printed, I mounted this custom image onto vibrant red cardstock, providing a bold frame. To further coordinate with the image’s aesthetic, I added various fabric scraps around the edges, blending textures and colors harmoniously. This page truly exemplifies the personalized and imaginative potential of junk journaling.
Pages 12 & 13: Delightful Details and Festive Finishes
As we approach the concluding pages, the intricate details continue to enchant. The corner pocket on this spread was lovingly created from tea-dyed paper, carefully designed to include a charming hidden tuck spot – perfect for concealing little notes or mementos. The accompanying tag is crafted from striking red card, layered with a delicate organza fabric. A delightful surprise awaits as you move the tag: it’s playfully decorated with shimmering red metallic spots, adding a subtle touch of festive sparkle. The heartwarming family image featured on this tag is a cherished selection from the Merry Retro Christmas bundle. To further enhance the vintage appeal, I chose elements from the extensive Christmas words collection, discovered through a simple search on The Graphics Fairy website, adding meaningful phrases to the design. A fascinating addition to this spread is a page from a vintage cookery book, proudly displaying a Christmas cake heavily decorated in a classic, “vintage” style – complete with thick, opulent royal icing, a true blast from the past! The opposite page has been gently tea-dyed, giving it a soft, aged patina, further enhanced with delicate stenciling. I meticulously fussy-cut an image taken from the Winter Fun collection, and to give the page a tactile and playful edge, I added vibrant red bobble fabric along its borders, concluding this nostalgic journal with a flourish.
I sincerely hope you’ve thoroughly enjoyed this detailed tour and discovering the creative process behind this unique Retro Christmas Junk Journal. I eagerly look forward to reading your comments and reflections. Thank you for joining me on this creative journey!
