Lunar Crafts: DIY Moon Phase Cards

Celestial Inspirations: Crafting Vintage Moon Phases Cards

Hello, Graphics Fairy friends! It’s Diana from Dreams Factory, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be back with you today to share another enchanting DIY project. We’re about to embark on a creative journey to craft some truly exquisite Vintage Moon Phases Cards. This project is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, thanks to the specially created free printable cardmaking kit. You’ll be amazed at how effortlessly these gorgeous cards come together. The only real challenge might be choosing your favorite hues from the four stunning color variations available. But why limit yourself? Embrace them all and create a dazzling collection!

For today’s demonstration, I gravitated towards the serene blues, cheerful yellows, and vibrant magentas. Looking back, I almost regret not following my own advice and creating a fourth version with the captivating green design. Each color palette lends a distinct mood and character to these celestial creations, inviting a different sense of wonder and beauty.

As a crowning detail, I decided to infuse these cards with a touch of gold. There’s an undeniable magic in gold; it introduces an element of surprise and luxury in the most subtle and elegant fashion. It’s not always immediately apparent, but with a slight tilt of the card, the shimmering gold reveals itself, allowing you to bask in its full, glorious splendor. This delicate gilding truly elevates the vintage aesthetic, making each card a tiny masterpiece.

Unlock Your Creativity: Free Moon Craft Printable Cards

To help you bring these exquisite moon phases cards to life, I’ve designed two essential printables. These resources are thoughtfully crafted to ensure your cardmaking process is smooth and enjoyable. You’ll find the download links below, ready to transform your crafting space into a celestial workshop.

  • Card Base and Top Printable: This foundational printable includes both the base and the decorative top for your cards. It also features a truly inspiring quote by Norman Vincent Peale: ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.’ This sentiment beautifully complements the celestial theme. You’ll need to print this printable once for each card you wish to create. Feel free to print as many copies as your heart desires if you’re planning a full collection or gifts for loved ones.
  • Colored Moons Printable: This printable is a treasure trove of lunar imagery, offering the stunning moon phases in various colors. You’ll utilize the larger versions of these moons for your cards, but I’ve also thoughtfully included several smaller versions. These miniature moons are perfect for using as decorative stickers in other creative endeavors, such as junk journals, scrapbooks, or gift tags. Print this sheet once, and you’ll have all the moons you need to create four distinctively colored cards.

These meticulously designed printables are your gateway to a world of vintage-inspired paper crafting. They are created with clarity and ease of use in mind, ensuring that even beginners can achieve professional-looking results. The detailed illustrations and the inspiring quote add layers of charm and personal touch to your handmade cards.

Essential Supplies for Your DIY Moon Craft Cards:

Gathering your materials is the first exciting step in any crafting project. For these vintage moon phase cards, you’ll need a selection of basic paper crafting tools and a few special items to achieve that perfect golden shimmer. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need:

  • Cardstock Paper: Essential for printing the sturdy card printable. Choose a good quality, heavier weight cardstock for durability and a professional feel.
  • Cardstock Paper OR Sticker Paper: For printing the moon printable. Sticker paper offers convenience if you prefer not to use glue for the moons, while cardstock allows for more embellishment versatility.
  • Home Printer: A reliable home printer is crucial for clear, vibrant printables.
  • Sharp Scissors: For precise cutting of the card elements and moons. A good pair of craft scissors will make a noticeable difference.
  • Bone Folder: This tool is invaluable for creating crisp, clean folds on your cardstock, especially with heavier weights, ensuring a polished finish.
  • Mini Distress Inks: I highly recommend Tim Holtz Distress Inks for adding a beautiful, aged, and vintage look to the edges of your paper elements.
  • Blending Tool with Foams: A blending tool, particularly with domed foams, allows for smooth and even application of distress inks, creating a professional-looking distressed edge.
  • Glue Stick or Any Other Paper Glue: For securely adhering the card components. Choose a strong, acid-free glue that won’t warp your paper.
  • Gold Acrylic Paint OR Gold Watercolor Paint OR Gold Gouache: I personally used gouache for its rich pigment and matte-to-satin finish, but any of these gold paints will create a stunning effect. This is the key to that magical “gold surprise.”
  • A Small Brush: For applying the gold paint to larger areas of the moons.
  • A Fine Tip Small Brush: Essential for adding delicate gold accents to smaller details like the stars or text edges.

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Vintage Moon Phases Cards

Let’s begin crafting! Follow these easy steps to create your own collection of vintage moon phases cards, imbued with timeless charm and a touch of golden elegance.

1. Print Your Templates and Prepare Your Paper

Start by printing both the card base/top printable and the colored moons printable onto your chosen cardstock paper. Quality cardstock will ensure your cards feel substantial and look professional. If you plan to make multiple cards, remember to print the card template printable several times. For example, to create three cards, you’ll need three copies of the card template. If you’re a fan of convenience, printing the moons on sticker paper is a fantastic option that eliminates the need for liquid glue later on.

2. Cut, Fold, and Distress Your Card Elements

Carefully use your scissors to cut out the quote, the card top, and the card base from your printed sheets. Precision here contributes greatly to the final polished look. Next, fold each card base neatly in half. For a clean, crisp fold, especially with heavier cardstock, use your fingers to crease it first, then reinforce the fold with a bone folder. This step prevents cracking and gives your card a professional edge.

To infuse your cards with that coveted vintage aesthetic, gently distress the edges of your cut-out pieces. Using your favorite distress inks, such as the rich Walnut Stain I prefer, lightly blend the ink along all the edges of the quote, card top, card base, and eventually, the moons. This technique adds an aged, worn look that perfectly complements the vintage theme, making your paper elements appear as if they’ve journeyed through time.

3. Select and Prepare Your Moons

Now comes the delightful, albeit challenging, decision of choosing your moon colors! Each of the four color variations offers a unique charm. You’ll need the full moons along with the three other phases located on either side of the full moon from your printable. I often cut out all the colored moons at this stage, as it gives me more options to play with. Plus, any leftover moons are perfect for future projects, making them wonderful to have on hand! Once cut, remember to distress the edges of your chosen moons as well, using the same technique as with the card elements. This ensures a cohesive, vintage look throughout your design.

4. Assemble the Card’s Foundation

Carefully apply paper glue to adhere the card top to the card base. If you examine our starry card design closely, you’ll notice subtle blank spaces—these are your guides for perfect moon placement. I’ve literally moved the stars aside for you, leaving clear marks in the night sky! Before making anything permanent, arrange your chosen moons and the quote sentiment on your card. Take a moment to experiment with their placement until you achieve a visually pleasing composition. Once satisfied with the layout, use your preferred paper glue to permanently secure each moon and the quote to the card.

5. Adding the Golden Surprise: Gilding the Moons and Stars

This is where the true magic happens! To introduce that elegant golden surprise, you’ll need a small brush and just a tiny amount of gold paint. I used gold gouaches for their rich, opaque finish, adding a drop of water to my lid to achieve the perfect consistency for easy application. The secret to making your moons shine with an organic, almost ethereal glow, as if they’re made of pure gold, lies in the application technique. Instead of traditional brush strokes, use a gentle dabbing motion. This technique allows the gold to subtly catch the light, creating a unique texture.

Remember, less is more. Use a tiny amount of paint and dab, dab, dab! Crucially, focus your gilding efforts on the darker surfaces of the moon, always keeping the original moon design in mind. We’re essentially ‘gilding the dark side of the moon,’ highlighting its mysterious contours and bringing them to life with a celestial shimmer. As you work, occasionally tilt your paper to observe how the light catches the gold. You’ll be amazed at the transformation – a little happy dance is entirely understandable at this point, as you’ve just created a truly gorgeous, golden moon!

It’s important not to completely obscure the darker surfaces with paint; the goal is to enhance, not cover, the underlying design. The original pattern of the moon should still peek through, adding depth and dimension. Continue dabbing gold onto the other moons, then switch to a really fine-tipped brush to add delicate golden touches to the small stars on your card. You can choose to paint all the stars for maximum sparkle or select just a few to create subtle focal points.

For an extra touch of sophistication, consider adding a whisper of gold to the edges of the quote lines. I applied a light brush stroke to the first line on my card, and the effect was truly captivating. This subtle gilding adds another layer of vintage charm and highlights the inspiring words.

Isn’t it remarkable what a gorgeous result we can achieve with such minimal effort? While gilding the tiny stars might take a moment of focused attention, I find the process of painting small details, especially with gold, to be incredibly relaxing and meditative. There’s something profoundly satisfying about watching these celestial bodies come alive with a radiant glow.

I must confess, I found myself repeatedly tilting and admiring these finished cards, utterly mesmerized by the interplay of light and shadow, and the captivating shimmer of gold. It’s clear why gold has held such profound, almost magical, allure throughout history – it simply radiates an irresistible beauty.

Beyond Cards: Versatile Moon Phase Stickers and Decor

Don’t forget the incredible versatility of these stunning moon phase images! The smaller versions included in the printable are perfect for transforming into stickers, opening up a universe of additional creative projects. Imagine incorporating them into your moon-themed junk journals, adding a celestial touch to each page. They’re also ideal for scrapbooking, creating unique tags for gifts, designing charming bookmarks, or even crafting elegant home decor collages.

Having a stash of these ready-to-use moon phases is a crafter’s dream. I personally keep a few gold-free versions on hand, just in case I want to experiment with other metallic paints like bronze or copper in future projects, allowing for even more creative expression and versatility. You could also mix and match colors from the different moon printables. These vintage moons look incredibly beautiful when combined, don’t you think? Their collective charm creates a harmonious and visually rich display.

And here’s a glimpse of the gorgeous green version, which, though not featured prominently today, undeniably holds its own captivating beauty. It serves as a reminder of the diverse palettes you can explore with this kit.

These vintage moon phases cards, with their hidden-in-plain-sight golden touches just waiting to be admired, make the most thoughtful and beautiful gifts on their own. They are more than just cards; they are miniature works of art, imbued with personal effort and a touch of celestial wonder.
