Meet the Artist: Henriëtte van Mierlo and Her Creative Vision

Hello everyone! I’m Henriëtte van Mierlo, hailing from the picturesque Netherlands, and I’m absolutely delighted to share my inaugural junk journal project as a proud member of The Graphics Fairy Design Team. My journey into the captivating world of junk journaling began approximately two years ago, and I’ve been utterly captivated ever since. This versatile art form allows for endless thematic explorations, from whimsical to historical, and I’ve experimented with a wide array of styles. However, I consistently find myself drawn back to the timeless elegance and nostalgic charm of the vintage aesthetic. There’s something uniquely satisfying about breathing new life into old ephemera and creating a tangible piece of history.

For my very first Graphics Fairy creation, I decided to embark on a Vintage Circus themed journal. The idea of capturing the vibrant, mysterious, and awe-inspiring atmosphere of an old-world circus had been brewing in my mind for quite some time. The moment I discovered The Graphics Fairy’s incredible collection of vintage circus bundles, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to bring this vision to life. The rich imagery and diverse elements within these bundles provided the ideal foundation for a project that truly reflects the grandeur and wonder of the big top.

Crafting the Perfect Vintage Circus Cover

The foundation of any great journal is its cover, and for this Vintage Circus Junk Journal, I wanted it to immediately transport the viewer into the enchanting world of the circus. I began by cutting two sturdy pieces of thick cardstock, each measuring 9×6 inches, which would form the front and back covers. For the spine, I prepared a piece measuring 9×2 inches. The choice of thick cardstock is crucial for durability, ensuring the journal can withstand years of handling and admiration. To join these pieces seamlessly, I used masking tape, a simple yet effective method that provides flexibility while creating a strong hinge.

The next step was to imbue the cover with its distinctive vintage character by layering it with fabrics. The textiles I meticulously selected for the front cover were a lucky find from a vintage fabric sample book, discovered during a treasure hunt at a local thrift store. This book was a true gem, containing an exquisite assortment of patterned and colored fabrics that perfectly evoked the rich textures and hues necessary for an authentic vintage circus aesthetic. These fabrics not only provide a visually appealing surface but also add a wonderful tactile dimension, inviting you to touch and explore.

Inner Beauty: Designing the Journal’s Interior and Spine

Continuing the journey inside, the interior of the journal demanded an equally captivating design. I chose a luxurious purple velour fabric to line the inside covers, a material that instantly adds a touch of opulence and a sense of theatrical grandeur, perfectly befitting the circus theme. Complementing this, I crafted two charming purple checkered fabric pockets, strategically placed to hold cherished ephemera, notes, or small treasures discovered along the way. These pockets are not just functional but also add an inviting visual element.

To ensure the journal’s longevity and to provide a sophisticated finish, I attached ornate gold book corners. These not only protect the edges from wear and tear but also lend an elegant, antique feel to the entire piece. Furthermore, to accommodate a bespoke embellishment, I punched a sturdy eyelet through the spine, preparing it for the handmade tassel that would later adorn it. It’s worth noting that the final decorative elements for the cover were thoughtfully added only after all the signatures – the grouped pages forming the core of the journal – were securely sewn into place. This methodical approach ensures structural integrity before focusing on intricate ornamentation.

Preparing the Pages: A Symphony of Vintage Ephemera and Digital Art

The heart of any junk journal lies within its pages. For my Vintage Circus Junk Journal, I meticulously gathered an eclectic assortment of papers. This included genuine old papers, each carrying its own unique history and texture, alongside tea-dyed copy paper, which I prepared myself to achieve that desirable aged, sepia-toned look. The combination of these papers provides a rich foundation, offering varied surfaces for writing, collage, and visual interest.

To further enhance the vintage circus theme, I delved into the treasure trove of The Graphics Fairy. Using Photoshop, I thoughtfully layered background papers and captivating images sourced from the “Dazzling Circus” and “Vintage Circus” bundles. This digital collage process allowed me to design custom pages that perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic, seamlessly integrating historical imagery with new creative layouts. These custom-designed pages were then organized into three distinct signatures, ready for assembly.

Before meticulously sewing in the signatures, I took the opportunity to add several crucial textural and decorative elements. This included attaching various fabric tabs along the page edges, which provide both visual interest and practical markers, alongside delicate lace trims that add a touch of antique elegance. Furthermore, I incorporated some subtle stenciling on various pages, adding depth and intricate patterns that hint at the ornate decorations often found in vintage circus tents. This preparatory work ensures that each page is a mini-masterpiece before it becomes part of the larger narrative of the journal.

Bringing the Circus to Life: Embellishing with Vintage Ephemera

Once all three signatures were securely sewn into the journal, the truly exhilarating phase began: adding all the enchanting pockets, tags, journaling cards, and various ephemera pieces. This is where the journal truly bursts into life, transforming from a collection of pages into an interactive experience. The Graphics Fairy proved to be an indispensable resource during this stage. Both the exclusive premium membership site and the vast public domain collection offered an incredible array of circus-themed vintage images, including fascinating illustrations of exotic animals, captivating photographs of circus performers, and intriguing historical artifacts.

I found numerous sheets filled with beautifully designed journal cards and intricate collage sheets showcasing the “wonders of the circus.” These resources are a dream for any crafter aiming for an authentic vintage feel. I made sure to integrate these elements throughout the entire journal, ensuring a cohesive and immersive theme on every page. Additionally, I supplemented these fantastic Graphics Fairy finds with some other unique (and free) images I discovered online, carefully curating a diverse and visually rich collection that makes each turn of the page a delightful surprise. Every pocket holds a secret, every tag an invitation to write, and every piece of ephemera tells a story, inviting the owner to become part of the journal’s unfolding narrative.

Detailed Embellishments: Charms, Cover Art, and The Finishing Tassel

No Vintage Circus Junk Journal would be complete without a touch of sparkle and movement. On the various fabric tabs that protrude from the pages, I carefully attached bulb pins adorned with delightful circus-themed charms and an array of colorful beads. These small details add a playful, kinetic element, making each tab a miniature attraction in itself, hinting at the wonders contained within the journal’s pages.

Finally, the grand finale of the project was decorating the front of the journal, transforming it into a captivating showpiece. The central image, featuring a majestic elephant, was meticulously created by me in Photoshop, combining elements from different Graphics Fairy bundles. The striking elephant itself was sourced from the “Dazzling Circus” bundle, while the evocative accompanying text came from the “Vintage Circus” bundle. After perfecting the digital design, I had it printed directly onto fabric, giving it a unique texture and seamlessly integrating it with the fabric-covered cover.

To further enhance the theatrical feel, I painstakingly crafted what appears to be circus curtains using rich red fabrics, shimmering gold thread, and delicate red lace. These elements are strategically layered to frame the central elephant image, creating the illusion of a stage curtain drawing open to reveal the wonders within. The combination of textures and colors truly captures the vibrant spectacle of the circus.

To perfectly complete this elaborate piece, I fashioned a bespoke tassel, pulling from my personal stash of laces, threads, and ribbons. This handmade tassel, a unique collection of various textures and hues, was then securely attached to the journal’s spine, adding a final touch of whimsy and movement, making the journal a truly tactile and visual delight. It’s a testament to the joy of mixed media crafting, where every element contributes to the overall narrative.
