Create an Old World European Finish with the DIY Sunken Treasure Technique

Unlock the Depths: Creating a Sunken Treasure Furniture Finish with Layered Patina

Welcome, fellow creatives and DIY enthusiasts! Heather from Thicketworks here, ready to embark on another exciting furniture transformation journey.

Today, we’re diving deep into a unique finishing technique that beautifully merges the elegance of Faded European Grandeur with the mysterious allure of oceanic depths. This layered approach results in a truly captivating “Sunken Treasure” designer furniture finish, perfect for adding character and history to any piece.

A special thank you to Heirloom Traditions for sponsoring this inspiring post!

Our canvas for today’s artistic endeavor is this beautifully shaped chair, a piece that has undoubtedly seen better days but holds immense potential for a stunning revival.

While I absolutely adore its graceful lines and classic silhouette, the uninspired brown stain left much to be desired. This chair was begging for a new lease on life, a story to tell through its finish.

Creating a truly unique designer furniture finish is an art form. It’s a delicate balance of intuition guiding your brushstrokes, a willingness to experiment with different mediums, and, most importantly, a profound trust in the creative process itself. You’ll find that some of the most beautiful results emerge when you allow yourself to let go and enjoy the journey.

To recreate this captivating, layered “Sunken Treasure” look, reminiscent of artifacts salvaged from the deep or forgotten European estates, you’ll need a carefully curated selection of materials:

  • Heirloom Traditions Chalk Type Paint: Alexandrite (This forms our deep, oceanic base color.)
  • Heirloom Traditions Aurora Staining Gel: Copper Mine Metallic (To introduce a rich, aged metallic shimmer.)
  • Heirloom Traditions Aurora Staining Gel: I’m Jaded (A vibrant, translucent green to enhance the aged patina.)
  • Heirloom Traditions Aurora Staining Gel: Oxidized Patina (Essential for achieving that authentic, time-worn appearance.)
  • Heirloom Traditions Soft Wax: Jet Black (To deepen tones and create dramatic shadows.)
  • Heirloom Traditions Spray Wax: Raspberry (A surprising pop of complementary color for added visual interest.)
  • Assorted Paint Brushes, including a small artist’s brush for fine details.
  • Lint-free rags for cleaning and buffing.
  • A small container for dispensing finishing products, ensuring easy access and minimal waste.
  • Low-tack painter’s tape to protect specific areas.
  • A plastic garbage bag or drop cloth for protecting upholstered sections.
  • Optional: A half vinegar / half water solution for thorough surface cleaning.
  • Optional: Protective gloves for those who prefer to keep their hands clean during the process.

Crafting Your DIY Old World European Furniture Finish: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Preparation is Key

Begin your transformation by carefully taping off any areas of your furniture piece that you wish to shield from paint and finishing products. For upholstered sections, a simple plastic garbage bag provides an effective and quick protective cover.

Next, meticulously dust and wipe down the entire wooden surface, aiming for the cleanest possible base. If you encounter stubborn grime or residue, a solution of half vinegar and half water works wonders. Ensure the surface is completely dry before proceeding to the next step.

Step 2: Laying the Foundation with Alexandrite

This unique finish begins with a base of Alexandrite Chalk Type Paint, a truly luxurious blue-green hue that perfectly captures the essence of deep ocean waters or weathered copper. Knowing that I intended to strategically distress the finish later, allowing hints of the original wood tone to peek through, I opted not to prime the surface beforehand. This choice allows for a more organic and authentic distressed look.

To achieve a remarkably smooth finish with minimal brushstrokes, a helpful trick is to dip your brush into water, gently wipe away any excess, and *then* dip it into the Alexandrite paint. This slight dilution helps the paint flow more evenly. (Pro Tip: For optimal results, boil your water for one minute and let it cool before use. This prevents any potential microorganisms from transferring from tap water into your pristine paint container.)

Apply two complete, even coats of Alexandrite Chalk Type Paint. Patience is a virtue here; ensure each coat is thoroughly dry before applying the next. This allows for proper adhesion and contributes to the overall durability of your finish.

(Note: The vibrant color of Alexandrite is more accurately depicted in the following image, showcasing its rich blue-green character.)

Step 3: Introducing Copper Mine with a Personal Touch

Now for the truly unconventional part! Begin to gently smear loose touches of Aurora Staining Gel: Copper Mine Metallic over the painted surface. And yes, you read that right – use your *fingers*! I know, it might sound a bit messy, but trust me, there’s a method to this delightful madness.

While a brush might seem like the natural choice, it tends to create a much more uniform pattern, even when you attempt a random application. The unique blotches, splotches, and organic textures achieved through finger painting inject an unparalleled energy and soul into the final piece. It allows for a truly intuitive application, making each chair unique.

Embrace the Messy Magic!

While a small artist’s brush can be used for adding intricate details or reaching tight corners, rely on your hands for the broader areas. The direct contact allows for unparalleled control and artistic expression. (Rest assured: Aurora Staining Gels are non-toxic and water-based, meaning they are perfectly safe for your skin, though they might linger on your manicure! If you prefer, protective gloves are always an option.)

Work quickly and intuitively. This isn’t a step to overthink. Allow your artistic instincts to guide you, creating an organic, distressed texture that whispers of hidden treasures.

Navigating the “Ugly Phase”

At this point, you might not be thrilled with the way your piece looks. And that’s perfectly normal – even expected! This is where the core principle of “trusting the process” truly comes into play. We must be willing to embrace the temporary discomfort of this “ugly phase” in order to fully appreciate the stunning transformation and the eventual reward of the final, magnificent finish. It’s an integral part of layering and building complex textures.

Once you’ve artfully splotched and dabbed Copper Mine across the entire surface with your hands, allow it ample time to dry. Thankfully, these gels dry relatively quickly.

Next, create a thin wash of Copper Mine by adding just a tiny bit of water to a dime-sized amount of the gel in your small container. With a brush, loosely slather this watery mix over the entire surface. This wash will subtly tie the initial copper applications together, adding a soft, shimmering veil.

Allow this layer to dry completely before moving on.

Step 4: Layering with “I’m Jaded” and Wet Distressing

The next layer involves Aurora Staining Gel: I’m Jaded. This is a wonderfully intense yet translucent green that will add incredible depth and character to your emerging patina. Apply a loose layer of “I’m Jaded” over the entire surface.

While the “I’m Jaded” layer is still slightly damp, it’s time to begin the crucial wet distressing process. Take a clean, damp cloth and gently begin to rub away layers of the staining gels and paint. Focus on areas where natural wear and tear would occur, like edges, carved details, and raised surfaces. The goal is to strategically reveal small glimpses of the original wood-toned finish beneath, creating a truly authentic aged effect:

Once satisfied with your distressing, allow the surface to dry thoroughly.

Step 5: Adding Mystery with Oxidized Patina

Now, apply a watery layer of ‘Oxidized Patina’ Aurora Staining Gel over selected areas of the piece. Be selective and thoughtful in your application. The ultimate goal here is to craft a surface that possesses incredible depth, dynamic movement, and a captivating touch of mystery, as if it has genuinely aged over centuries.

Don’t be afraid to be bold with the patina in some areas, allowing it to gather and deepen, while in others, apply it more demurely for subtle hints of age.

Allow this final gel layer to dry thoroughly. At this stage, the complexity of your carefully built layers truly begins to ripen and reveal itself. You should now be able to detect the subtle traces of the original wood tones, the deep Alexandrite base, the shimmering Copper Mine, the vibrant I’m Jaded, and the aged Oxidized Patina.

It’s this nuanced interplay between these rich pigments that delights the eye and vividly evokes the imagery of “Sunken Treasure”—a masterpiece forged by time and artistic vision.

Step 6: Enhancing Details with Metallic Flow

If your furniture piece features carved channels or intricate details, here’s a delightful technique to highlight them: allow a watery mix of metallic pigment (in this case, more Aurora Staining Gel: Copper Mine) to flow precisely within these carved contours. The liquid will settle beautifully, leaving behind a faint, yet captivating, metallic sheen that accentuates the craftsmanship of the piece.

Step 7: Adding Drama with Jet Black Soft Wax

At this point, your finish is undoubtedly rich, but perhaps a touch too uniform or lacking that final layer of sophisticated depth. One excellent method to introduce subtle drama and antique charm is through the application of Jet Black Soft Wax.

Observe the striking difference: on the right, Jet Black Soft Wax has been carefully applied with a brush, immediately deepening the tone and adding visual weight. On the left, you see the surface just prior to the wax application, highlighting the transformative power of this step.

Apply the Jet Black Wax over the entire piece, using your brush to swirl it into all the nooks, crannies, and carved details. Initially, the appearance will become somewhat “dull” or muted – this is precisely the effect we’re aiming for. It’s a normal and necessary part of the process, setting the stage for the next magnificent reveal.

Allow the Black Wax to set up overnight. This crucial curing time ensures the wax hardens sufficiently for proper buffing and long-lasting results.

Step 8: Revealing the Gleam through Buffing

Soft waxes, like our Jet Black, require diligent buffing with a lint-free cloth. This action works the wax deep into the finish, activating its protective qualities and, most satisfyingly, bringing out that glorious, soft gleam that transforms the piece. Without buffing, the wax would remain dull and potentially tacky.

Chairs are particularly enjoyable candidates for soft waxing, as their various surfaces allow for a dynamic “shoe-shine” method to effectively buff large areas.

Step 9: The Unexpected Pop: Raspberry Splatter

Confession: I’m a firm believer that “more is more” when it comes to adding unique artistic touches. Or perhaps, I simply can’t resist pushing the creative boundaries! But here’s the magic: a subtle, carefully placed amount of a complementary color can truly breathe unexpected life and vibrancy into your finish.

Who could possibly resist such a captivating detail?

Certainly not me. For this final flourish, we’ll create another watery mix, this time using Raspberry Spray Wax, applied with a scruffy brush for maximum texture.

Before applying to your precious piece, always test the splatter technique on a scrap surface. Load your brush with the diluted pigment, then sharply tap the handle against your finger or another object to release a fine, ethereal mist of glorious color. Aim for an organic, scattered effect rather than uniform dots.

Now, and this is the hardest part, resist the temptation to touch the surface! Go for a walk, tackle some laundry (if you must!), and allow the delicate splatter to dry completely, undisturbed. When you return, you’ll find the finish has fully ripened, achieving its complete glory.

The rich complexity of layers will now be gleaming in a magnificent symphony of patina, revealing the full depth and character you’ve meticulously built:

This transformed chair has become a cherished part of our permanent collection, a testament to the power of creative finishing. I’ll truly never part with my “Sunken Treasure”!

Note the exquisite, beautiful gleam that only thoroughly buffed wax can provide – simply divine.

Those tiny, subtle splatters of Raspberry add an unexpected dimension, catching the light and drawing the eye.

For me, this finish truly evokes the rich, multi-faceted patina seen on ancient treasures painstakingly pulled from ships long sunk into the ocean’s silent depths, or priceless heirlooms from forgotten European eras.

After diligent buffing, the surface doesn’t appear overtly “black” at all; instead, the Jet Black wax simply adds an incredible richness and depth, enhancing the underlying colors without dominating them.

And there you have it – a magnificent transformation. A furniture piece embodying Faded Grandeur, infused with a subtle hint of the ocean’s mystique, truly a “Sunken Treasure” reborn.
