Why Choose Handmade Gift Bows? The Benefits of DIY Embellishments
In a world of mass-produced items, a handmade gift bow stands out. It’s more than just an accessory; it’s a testament to the care and thought you put into your present. Here are compelling reasons to embrace the DIY bow trend:
- Cost-Effective: Store-bought bows can be surprisingly expensive, especially for multiple gifts. Crafting your own uses leftover wrapping paper scraps or inexpensive materials like tracing paper, significantly cutting down on your gifting budget.
- Personalization: Design bows that perfectly match your gift wrap, the recipient’s personality, or the occasion’s theme. The ability to choose colors, patterns, and even the type of paper allows for truly unique creations.
- Eco-Friendly: Reduce waste by repurposing wrapping paper scraps that might otherwise be discarded. This sustainable approach is not only good for your wallet but also for the planet.
- Unleash Creativity: Bow making is a relaxing and rewarding craft. It’s an opportunity to experiment with different papers, textures, and distressing techniques, making each bow a mini work of art.
- Instant Gratification: With our easy-to-follow instructions, you’ll be able to create stunning bows in no time, adding that final, professional touch to your gifts moments before they’re presented.
Unveiling the “Faux Wrapping Paper” Secret: Tracing Paper Magic
You’re likely curious about this “faux wrapping paper” I keep mentioning. And rightly so! The secret is out: we’re using tracing paper! This unexpected material is a game-changer for bow crafting, offering a unique aesthetic that traditional wrapping paper often can’t replicate. While my initial thought was to use regular paper and transform it into faux vellum, tracing paper proved to be an even more exciting discovery.
Tracing paper possesses a subtle translucence and a fine texture that closely mimics high-quality, delicate wrapping paper, offering an immediate visual impact. Its slight sheerness adds an ethereal, elegant quality to the finished bows, elevating them beyond the ordinary. This makes it an exceptional substitute, especially when paired with our beautiful printable designs.
I’ve designed an absolutely captivating printable featuring gorgeous floral motifs, making it incredibly simple to create breathtaking paper bows using this tracing paper technique. The design itself is a cutout from a larger wallpaper-inspired image, sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site – a treasure trove for crafters seeking vintage images, bundles, and inspiring tutorials. When I first saw these flowers from The Lacemaker bundle, I instantly knew they would be perfect for a chic and elegant bow project.
With this pre-designed floral printable, you can directly print the strips onto tracing paper, effectively creating your own custom “faux wrapping paper.” This eliminates the need for tracing and allows you to dive straight into the assembly process, crafting a beautiful bow in record time.
Of course, this technique is also fully adaptable if you prefer using conventional wrapping paper. For those who love the feel and variety of store-bought designs, I’ve also provided a template with strips for two different-sized bows. Simply print these templates onto sturdy cardstock, cut them out, and then trace them onto your chosen wrapping paper. Whether you opt for the innovative tracing paper method or stick with classic wrapping paper, the core assembly steps remain wonderfully consistent and straightforward.
Essential Supplies for Your DIY Wrapping Paper Bow Project
Gathering your materials is the first exciting step in any craft project. For these beautiful paper bows, you’ll need a few key items, most of which you might already have on hand. Here’s your comprehensive list:
- Regular Wrapping Paper: Choose your absolute favorite design if you’re going the traditional route. Look for patterns that inspire you!
- Cardstock Paper: Essential for printing your bow templates if you’re tracing onto wrapping paper. Its sturdiness ensures precise outlines.
- Tracing Paper: Our secret weapon for “faux wrapping paper.” Opt for a good quality translucent tracing paper for the best results, especially with printable designs.
- Printer (Laserjet or Inkjet): Necessary for printing both the templates and the pre-designed floral strips. Either type will work beautifully.
- Scissors: A sharp pair of craft scissors will make cutting your strips effortless and accurate.
- Mini Distress Ink (Optional): I recommend “Tea Dye” for a classic vintage look. This adds depth and character to the edges of your paper.
- Blending Tool with Foam (Optional): Perfect for applying distress ink smoothly and evenly. A domed foam applicator is often preferred for precise control.
- Stapler (Preferably Small): A compact stapler is ideal for securing the loops of your bow neatly without being too noticeable.
- Double-Sided Tape: Crucial for assembling the layers of your bow securely and invisibly, creating a polished finish.

How to Make a Bow out of Wrapping Paper: Step-by-Step Instructions
Preparing Your Paper Strips: Two Approaches
Method 1: Using Traditional Wrapping Paper
If you’re using traditional wrapping paper, the first step is to select a design you absolutely adore. I once found a gorgeous French ephemera script paper from The Graphics Fairy that was just perfect – the chances!
- Select Your Wrapping Paper: Dive into your stash and pick out the wrapping paper that speaks to you.
- Print Templates: Print the bow templates onto sturdy cardstock. These templates offer different sizes (larger or smaller) for your bows. The small squares on the templates will help you identify and differentiate between the two bow sizes. For instance, if you want a smaller bow, you’ll use the strips indicated by the empty squares.
- Trace and Cut: Each template indicates the number of strips you’ll need for each size (large, medium, small). Using a pencil, carefully trace all the required strips onto the back of your chosen wrapping paper. No need for a ruler here; the templates provide precise outlines.
- Quantity for One Bow: To create a single bow, you will generally need three strips of each size (large, medium, and small), plus one additional, separate smaller strip for the center.
Remember, once your strips are cut, the assembly technique remains consistent, regardless of whether you’re using traditional wrapping paper or our special faux paper.
Method 2: Embracing Our Printable Faux Wrapping Paper (Tracing Paper)
This method streamlines the process, allowing you to use our stunning pre-designed floral patterns directly.
- Print Floral Strips: Print the provided pre-designed floral strips directly onto tracing paper. This acts as our beautiful faux wrapping paper.
- Cut Strips and Distress (Optional): Carefully cut along the inner edge of the black borders on the printable, removing the black outline completely. As with the traditional method, you’ll need three large, three medium, three small strips, and one separate smaller strip for one complete bow. For an added touch of vintage charm, gently distress the edges of each strip using a mini distress ink pad and a blending tool. This step adds wonderful depth and character.
Transforming Strips into Elegant “Infinity Loops”
With your strips prepared, it’s time to bring them to life by forming the signature loops that give the bow its volume and elegance. It’s incredibly helpful to organize your cut strips by size on your workspace before proceeding.
For your bow, you’ll be transforming nine strips – three large, three medium, and three small – into distinctive eight-shaped loops, which I affectionately call “infinity signs.” The final small strip will become a simple circle for the center. Note: You might not use all 3 small strips depending on your paper’s thickness, so keep one extra small strip and the very smallest strip aside for now.
- Crease the Strip: Take one strip and fold it precisely in half, pressing firmly to create a sharp crease in the middle. Then, unfold it. This central crease will serve as your guide.
- Create the First Loop: Pick up one end of the strip and bring it towards the central crease. Once it reaches the middle, twist the end once to form a loop. Securely hold this loop in place at the paper’s center with your fingers.
- Form the Second Loop: Carefully rotate the strip and repeat the process on the opposite side, creating another twisted loop. The two ends should slightly overlap in the middle, forming a balanced and aesthetically pleasing infinity sign.
- Secure with a Staple: Using a small stapler, carefully staple the two slightly overlapping ends together in the center. This holds your infinity loop firmly in place.
- Repeat for Remaining Strips: Follow steps 3-6 to turn all your large, medium, and two of your small strips into infinity signs. You might find it easier to perform these steps while holding the strips in your hand rather than on a flat surface; experiment to find what works best for you.
Assembling Your Multi-Layered Masterpiece
Now comes the exciting part: layering your infinity loops to build a beautiful, three-dimensional bow. Double-sided tape is your best friend here, ensuring a neat and invisible hold.
- Prepare for Stacking: Cut a piece of double-sided tape and place it directly over the staple in the middle of each infinity sign. This provides a clean, strong adhesive point.
- Start with the Largest Loops: Begin assembling your bow using two of the large infinity loops. Position them to form a “plus sign” (+) or a cross shape. Press firmly to ensure they adhere well.
- Layering the Loops: The key to a full, symmetrical bow is a specific layering sequence. After placing an infinity sign, remove the protective backing from the double-sided tape only *after* you’ve positioned the next infinity sign on top and pressed it down firmly.
- The 90-Degree & 45-Degree Sequence: Continue adding infinity signs, working your way from the large loops to the medium, and then to the small ones. The technique is to always alternate: place one loop at a 90-degree angle to the previous one (forming a cross), then the next at a 45-degree angle to the previous one. This creates a balanced, multi-directional fullness for your bow. Repeat this 90-degree and 45-degree sequence until you’ve added all your prepared infinity signs, saving the two unfolded small strips for last.
- Adjusting the Smallest Loops: As you add more layers, the center space on top of your bow will naturally narrow. You might find that you don’t need all three small strips; if the space becomes too tight, simply omit one of the small infinity loops. Use it for another craft project!
- The Central Circle: Finally, take the one really small strip you saved and fold it into a neat circle. Test its fit in the very center of your bow. Trim any excess paper if necessary to achieve a perfect fit. Once satisfied, staple the circle to secure its shape, apply a piece of double-sided tape to its back, and adhere it firmly to the center of your bow. This completes the polished look.
Voila! Your handmade faux wrapping paper bow is complete! It might not be absolutely perfect on your first try, but remember, practice makes perfect. The more bows you create, the more skilled and confident you’ll become.
Showcase Your Creations: A Gallery of DIY Bows
The beauty of this technique lies in its versatility. Using the same fundamental steps, you can create a wide array of bows, each with its own unique character. Here are some examples to inspire your next project:
The first example, crafted using our faux wrapping paper with the stunning floral design, is simply gorgeous. The delicate translucence of the tracing paper truly enhances the intricate flower patterns, giving the bow an ethereal and refined quality. It’s a perfect choice for elegant gifts, adding a touch of sophisticated charm that’s hard to achieve with opaque papers.
Next, observe the bow made from regular gift wrap featuring a beautiful French script. This design has a more neutral and classic vibe, exuding understated charm. It’s perfect for gifts where you want an elegant touch without overwhelming the recipient with vibrant colors. The texture of traditional wrapping paper also offers a different tactile experience, contributing to its distinct appeal.
Though we’re eagerly anticipating summer, let’s fast forward to the holidays! I couldn’t resist applying this same technique to create a festive Christmas bow. Using leftover holiday wrapping paper scraps featuring a charming French collage pattern (you might recall it from my DIY Christmas Crackers project), I created a bow that perfectly captures the spirit of the season. This particular Christmas collage was already printed on tracing paper, making it an ideal candidate for our faux wrapping paper project. The result was equally delightful, proving the adaptability of this method.
My paper gift bow experiments may have gotten a little ambitious, but with wonderful results! I also tried this technique with regular printer paper. While regular paper is generally more fragile and requires a slightly gentler touch during assembly (I had to omit two small strips due to the thickness and difficulty in pressing the layers), the final bow was undeniably gorgeous. Distressing the edges of both front and back strips beforehand added a lovely textured feel. Each material offers a distinct character, encouraging you to explore and find your favorite.

These beautiful handmade bows aren’t just for gifts! Their versatility extends far beyond basic gift wrapping, allowing you to add a charming, personalized touch to various aspects of your life and home:
- Handmade Gift Boxes: Easily transform a simple handmade gift box, like The DIY Book Box, into a perfect present. Attach one of your leftover strips to the box cover with a large paper clip, apply double-sided tape, and then securely place your bow on top. Fill the box with homemade cookies or other small treasures for an unforgettable combination!
- Party Favors: Adorn party favor bags or small take-home gifts with a miniature version of these bows for a cohesive and elegant look.
- Home Decor Accents: Use bows to embellish wreaths, tie around decorative jars or vases, or even create unique garlands.
- Scrapbook and Journal Embellishments: Smaller bows can add beautiful dimension and texture to your scrapbook pages or journal entries, highlighting special memories.
- Place Cards: Attach a small bow to each place card at a dinner party for a touch of refined elegance.
- Centerpiece Elements: Incorporate bows into floral arrangements or table centerpieces for events, matching them to your theme.
- Hair Accessories: With a little ingenuity, you could even attach a small bow to a hair clip or headband for a unique accessory.
Tips for Success and Bow-Making Mastery
To ensure your bow-making journey is smooth and enjoyable, consider these helpful tips:
- Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be discouraged if your first bow isn’t flawless. Each attempt refines your technique and builds your confidence.
- Experiment with Papers: While tracing paper is fantastic, try different weights and textures of paper. Each type will yield a slightly different look and feel for your bows.
- Distress Ink Techniques: If using distress ink, experiment with how much pressure you apply and how close to the edge you blend for varied effects. A lighter touch creates a subtle aging, while heavier application gives a more pronounced vintage look.
- Stapler Size Matters: A small, discreet stapler is best. If you only have a larger one, try to position the staples as close to the center as possible and conceal them well with your double-sided tape.
- Consistency in Loops: Strive for consistency in the size and tightness of your infinity loops. This will contribute to a more symmetrical and professional-looking finished bow.
- Troubleshooting Adhesion: If your tape isn’t holding, ensure your paper surfaces are clean and free of dust or oils. You can also reinforce with a tiny dab of craft glue if needed, especially for the center circle.
- Storage: Store your completed bows in a box to prevent them from getting crushed, ensuring they look pristine when it’s time to use them.
I genuinely hope you’ve enjoyed this project and feel inspired to give it a try! Embrace the joy of crafting, practice at becoming a bow-folding master, and let your creativity shine using leftover wrapping paper. The floral faux wrapping paper bow, in particular, has captured my heart; I absolutely adore the end result. I hope it brings a little bit of joy and a big smile to anyone who receives it with a thoughtful gift.
