Essential Supplies for Your DIY French Farmhouse Tray Project

One of the beauties of this DIY project is its flexibility. While I’ll provide specific dimensions for the wood, these are merely a guide. The true farmhouse spirit lies in using what you have on hand, transforming humble materials into something extraordinary. Feel free to adapt the measurements to suit the scrap wood you’ve collected or to create a custom tray size that perfectly fits your needs. Remember, careful measurement is key before making any cuts!

Wood Components:

  • 5 – 1 x 3 wood boards, each cut to 20” for the tray base (Metric Version: 5 – 2 x 6 cm wood boards, cut to 50 cm). These pieces will form the main surface of your tray, creating the distinct shiplap effect.
  • 2 – 1 x 3 wood boards, cut to approximately 12-1/2” for the support sides (Metric Version: 2 – 2 x 6 cm, cut to 30 cm). These pieces will provide structural integrity and define the width of your tray. Ensure these are cut to the exact assembled width of your five base boards.

Hardware and Adhesives:

  • Rustic pull handles: Choose handles that complement the French farmhouse aesthetic. Metal or distressed finishes work wonderfully.
  • Strong wood glue: Essential for a durable and lasting assembly.
  • Screwdriver or driver drill: For securely attaching handles and optionally reinforcing the tray.

Paints and Finishing Touches:

  • Brown acrylic paint: For the base stain and distressing peeks.
  • White acrylic paint: The primary color for your distressed look.
  • Brushes: A variety of sizes for staining, painting, and detailed work.
  • Candle wax: A secret weapon for achieving that perfectly distressed, chippy paint look.
  • 120 grit sand paper: For smooth distressing and revealing the layers beneath.
  • Matte finish spray: Crucial for protecting your artwork and decals, providing a professional, seamless finish.

Image Transfer Materials:

  • Waterslide Decal Paper for Laser Printers OR Waterslide Decal Paper for Inkjet Printers: Ensure you select the correct type for your printer.
  • French graphic: The design you wish to transfer. I created the French printable for this project using several beautiful images from The Graphics Fairy, enhancing it with a rustic brown tone in Photoshop. This rustic brown perfectly complements the vintage charm of our DIY French Farmhouse tray. Of course, you can also print it in classic black and white if you prefer, simply adjust your printer settings.
  • Folding ruler: Indispensable for accurate measurements and layout.

Before committing to printing on decal paper, I highly recommend printing your chosen French graphic on regular paper. This allows you to test the size and placement against your wood pieces, ensuring the design fits perfectly and avoids any wasted decal paper. This simple step can save you time and resources in the long run.

DIY French Farmhouse Tray: Painting and Distressing for a Vintage Look

The painting and distressing process is where the true character of your French Farmhouse Tray begins to emerge. This isn’t just about applying color; it’s about layering textures and finishes to create an aged, well-loved appearance that evokes a sense of history and charm. Embrace the imperfections, as they contribute to the unique allure of a handmade, rustic piece.

  1. **Prepare Your Wood:** Begin by carefully measuring and cutting all your wood pieces to the desired sizes. Precision here will ensure a neatly assembled tray. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper for a clean base.
  2. **Apply the Base Stain:** Dilute your brown acrylic paint significantly with water. This isn’t meant to be an opaque coat, but rather a translucent stain that allows the wood grain to show through, mimicking an aged, natural wood base. Apply this diluted paint evenly to all wood pieces.
  3. **Allow to Dry Thoroughly:** Let the brown stain dry completely. Patience at this stage prevents smudging and ensures subsequent layers adhere properly.
  4. **Paint the Handles (Optional):** While your wood pieces are drying, take the opportunity to paint your rustic pull handles. Use undiluted brown acrylic paint for a solid, rich color. If your handles already possess the perfect antique finish, you can skip this step entirely.
  5. **The Wax Resist Technique:** This is the key to effortless distressing. Rub candle wax liberally along the edges of each wood board. For a more intensely distressed, “chippy” paint effect, extend the wax application to other areas of the wood surface, not just the edges. The wax acts as a resist, preventing the top layer of paint from adhering firmly, making it easy to sand off later.
  6. **Apply the Top Coat:** Once the wax is applied, paint all the wood boards with white acrylic paint. This will be the primary color of your tray. Ensure even coverage and allow it to dry completely. A second coat might be necessary for full opacity, depending on your desired finish.
  7. **Distress to Perfection:** Once the white paint is thoroughly dry, use your 120 grit sandpaper to gently distress each wood board. Focus on the areas where you applied the candle wax. As you sand, the white paint will chip and rub away, revealing the brown base coat and the natural wood beneath. Experiment with pressure and technique to achieve your desired level of rustic charm. Stop when you are fully satisfied with the authentic, aged look.

DIY French Farmhouse Tray: Assembling Your Rustic Masterpiece

With your beautifully painted and distressed wood pieces ready, it’s time for the exciting part: assembling your DIY French Farmhouse Tray. A sturdy build is essential for a functional and long-lasting tray, so pay close attention to securing each component. Before you begin, protect your work surface by placing a garbage bag or old newspaper underneath your wood pieces. This will catch any excess glue and prevent unwanted mess.

  1. **Prepare for Gluing:** Lay out your five base wood boards. Turn each piece upwards (long-wise) so that the side edges are exposed. Apply a generous, continuous bead of strong wood glue along the entire length of these exposed side surfaces. This ensures a strong bond between the boards.
  2. **Form the Tray Base:** Carefully place the glued boards back down on your protected surface, aligning them perfectly side-by-side to create a solid, rectangular base for your tray. Press them firmly together to ensure maximum contact.
  3. **Attach the Support Pieces:** Now, apply wood glue to one side of each of your two shorter support pieces. These will be glued perpendicularly across the ends of your assembled base boards. Position these support pieces on top of the base, ensuring they are evenly spaced and flush with the outer edges. I found it helpful to use my printed design as a guide for placement, but a folding ruler will also help you determine the exact right positions for perfect symmetry.
  4. **Secure and Cure:** Once the base and supports are glued, avoid moving your newly assembled tray. Allow the glue to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s recommended time. For added stability, use clamps to hold the wood pieces tightly together while the glue sets. For an even more robust tray, consider drilling some small screws from the back of the tray, ensuring they penetrate both the base and the support pieces. This mechanical fastening provides extra durability for a tray that will see a lot of use.
  5. **Mark Handle Placement:** After the glue has fully cured and any optional screws are in place, it’s time to add the rustic pull handles. Carefully measure and determine the exact position for each handle on the support pieces. Use a pencil to mark the screw holes.
  6. **Attach the Handles:** Using either a screwdriver or a driver drill (whichever you’re more comfortable with), securely attach the pull handles to the marked positions. My husband often helps with this part, as he enjoys using power tools more than I do! Ensure the handles are firmly fixed and ready for comfortable carrying.

DIY French Farmhouse Tray: Mastering the Art of Image Transfer

One of my absolute favorite techniques for adding that special touch to almost any object is the waterslide decal paper transfer. For those familiar with my blog, you know I use this method frequently, and for good reason! It creates a beautifully integrated design that truly looks painted on. I typically use a **Laser Printer** to print my favorite images onto decal paper, and even after years, I’m still captivated by the seamless results.

(Please note: The following procedure applies specifically to Laser Decal paper when using a Laser Printer. **If you are using an Inkjet Printer, make sure you purchase Inkjet Waterslide Decals and always follow the specific instructions provided on their package.** The general steps are similar, but crucial differences in drying and sealing may apply.)

  1. **Print Your Design:** Print your chosen French design onto the Laser waterslide decal paper using your Laser printer. Ensure the print quality is set to high for crisp details.
  2. **Precision Cutting:** Carefully cut out each image as close to the borders or text as possible. Since our wooden tray is crafted from several individual wood pieces, it’s beneficial to cut the decal paper into smaller, manageable sections. This makes them much easier to apply accurately across the individual boards.
  3. **Pre-Fit and Adjust:** Before applying water, perform a quick dry-fit. Check if each decal piece perfectly matches the width of its corresponding wood board. As you can see in my example, a small embellishment on the letter ‘S’ from ‘Spiritueux’ slightly exceeded the board’s width. In such cases, simply use scissors to trim off any excess for a perfect fit.
  4. **Activate the Decal:** Gently immerse the first decal paper piece into a shallow dish of water. You only need to keep it submerged for a few seconds. You’ll notice the decal layer start to separate slightly from its backing paper.
  5. **Apply to Tray:** Carefully remove the decal from the water. Position it precisely on your tray. Gently slide the paper backing out from underneath the decal, leaving the image adhered to the wood surface. Immediately use a soft paper towel to carefully blot away any excess water and gently smooth out any air bubbles that might have formed beneath the decal. Work from the center outwards to push out air and water.
  6. **Repeat and Admire:** Repeat steps 4 and 5 for all remaining decal pieces. Take your time, working one section at a time. Once all images are transferred, step back and admire your almost-ready DIY French Farmhouse Tray! The transformed surface will already be looking incredible.

DIY French Farmhouse Tray: Final Touches, Tips & Tricks for Lasting Beauty

You’re almost there! These final steps are crucial for ensuring your DIY French Farmhouse Tray not only looks fantastic but also stands the test of time. A little attention to detail now will preserve your hard work and allow you to enjoy your beautiful creation for years to come.

  1. **Camouflage the Screws:** To achieve a truly integrated and rustic look, use a small brush and some undiluted brown acrylic paint to carefully coat the heads of the screws used to secure your handles. This simple step helps them blend seamlessly with the distressed wood and rustic hardware. Allow the paint to dry completely. A little tip from my own experience: when opening your handle package, immediately place all screws in a small plastic cup or bowl. This prevents them from rolling away and getting lost, saving you the hassle of improvising with mismatched screws later!
  2. **The All-Important Protective Seal:** This step is absolutely paramount and should not be skipped! Using a clear matte finish spray, protect the ENTIRE surface of your tray. This includes all painted areas, the transferred decals, and even the handles. I used a spray often found in Europe for this project, but I’ve had excellent results with Krylon clear matte spray in the past. Why the emphasis on “WHOLE” surface? This protective layer seals everything, not only safeguarding your paintwork from chips and scuffs but also creating a barrier over your delicate decals. It helps to integrate the decal into the wood, giving it a truly painted-on appearance.
  3. **Witness the Magic of Blending:** Curious why this protective spray is so important for the decals? Take a closer look at the picture above the current paragraph. You’ll notice the distinct, somewhat shiny borders of the decal paper before the protective spray is applied. Now, compare that to the image below. Voila! The shiny borders have completely (and almost magically) disappeared. The spray acts as a unifying layer, causing the decals to ‘blend’ into the painted surface, making their edges virtually invisible. This creates an authentic, hand-painted illusion that truly elevates the overall aesthetic of your DIY French Farmhouse Tray.
  4. And now look at the picture below. The shiny borders have completely (and magically) disappeared! The decals have somehow ‘blended’ into the painted surface and you can barely see their borders anymore.

Now, you can finally admire your magnificent creation! Your DIY French Farmhouse Tray, meticulously crafted from scratch, is complete and ready to be used, cherished, and admired in your home. The satisfaction of creating something so beautiful and functional with your own hands is truly unparalleled.
