Hello Graphics Fairy friends! Diana from Dreams Factory here, thrilled to share another delightful DIY tutorial with you. Today, we’re diving into the enchanting world of handmade stationery to create these truly exquisite DIY Vintage French Notepads. Featuring mesmerizing red roses, a distinctively chic ‘Frenchified’ aesthetic, and an undeniable shabby-chic charm, these notepads are a perfect blend of elegance and practicality. We’ve prepared free printable templates in three convenient sizes, ensuring you can craft these beauties to perfectly suit your needs, whether for personal use, thoughtful gifts, or even to sell at craft fairs.

Beyond just the covers, I’m also providing coordinating templates for the interior paper inserts, adorned with a beautiful vintage frame. This meticulous attention to every small detail ensures that your finished notepads are not just functional, but truly unique works of art. Every element has been carefully chosen to create a cohesive and captivating design that you’ll adore.

The covers of these Vintage French Notepads are, without exaggeration, contenders for my all-time favorite designs. The focal point, a rich image of red roses, is truly captivating, isn’t it? These vibrant blossoms harmonize flawlessly with the intricate French ephemera, the elegant vintage frame, and the charming red postage stamp. The entire design has come together beautifully, exceeding my expectations. I particularly love how the front label not only complements the project’s aesthetics but also offers a designated space for you to personalize it with a title or recipient’s name. For the inserts, I’ve maintained the same vintage frame motif but kept the pages pristine white, offering you a blank canvas to embellish them further as your creativity dictates.

Crafting your own notepads is a wonderfully rewarding experience. It allows for complete personalization, transforming simple paper into a cherished item. These DIY notepads are not only perfect for jotting down daily thoughts, reminders, or shopping lists but also serve as incredible handmade gifts. Imagine presenting a friend or loved one with a set of these elegant, vintage-inspired notepads – a truly thoughtful and unique present for any occasion. They are ideal for birthdays, holidays, or even as charming stocking stuffers during Christmas. Moreover, if you’re a fan of junk journaling or mixed-media art, these notepads provide beautiful, ready-made elements to incorporate into your creative projects, adding an authentic vintage touch.

Next, decide how many pages you’d like each notepad to contain and print the corresponding inserts. It’s wonderfully straightforward: simply print as many sheets of paper for your inserts as desired. Here’s a general guideline for the sets I created:

  • For 1 large notepad – I printed the large template 3 times to yield 15 large inserts.
  • For 1 medium notepad – I printed the medium template 2 times to yield 16 medium inserts.
  • For 1 small notepad – I printed the small template 1 time to yield 12 small inserts.

Essential Supplies for Your DIY Notepads

Gathering your materials is the first step towards creating these lovely vintage notepads. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need:

  • The notepad printables (covers and inserts)
  • Cardstock paper (for printing the durable covers)
  • Regular printing paper (for the interior pages)
  • Laserjet printer or an Inkjet Printer (if using inkjet, ensure you follow this extra step for waterproofing)
  • Mini distress inks (perfect for adding an aged, vintage look)
  • Blending tool with foams (domed ones are often preferred for smooth application)
  • Scissors or a paper trimmer (for precise cutting)
  • Binder clips (these will serve as clamps to hold pages together)
  • Craft glue with a fine tip applicator (PVA glue works well)
  • A ruler and a bone folder (optional, but highly recommended for crisp folds)
  • Double-sided tape (for a clean finish when adhering pages)
  • A plastic sheet or any non-absorbent surface (to protect your workspace from glue and ink)

Having all your supplies ready before you start will make the crafting process much more enjoyable and efficient. Each item plays a crucial role in achieving that polished, professional look for your DIY notepads.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Notepads

Follow these detailed steps to bring your vintage notepad visions to life:

1. Prepare Your Covers: Begin by printing your beautiful red rose covers onto sturdy cardstock paper. Carefully cut them to size, following the outer edge of the brown vintage frame. Ensure all white paper borders are neatly removed for a clean finish. Precision here will enhance the overall aesthetic of your finished notepad.

2. Print Interior Inserts: As mentioned earlier, print the desired number of inserts for each notepad. The quantity depends on how thick you want your notepads to be. Remember, you have templates for large, medium, and small sizes.

3. Distress and Embellish Inserts: For an authentic vintage feel, I highly recommend distressing your inserts at this stage. It’s easier to ink and stamp them before assembly. Experiment with various distress ink colors. For instance, I used a soft pink on the small notepads, a rich red on the medium ones, and a classic brown (Walnut Stain) across all sizes to tie them together. To add another layer of charm, consider using your favorite stamps. Small butterflies, delicate flowers, graceful leaves, or elegant feathers can transform each page into a miniature work of art. Just be mindful of the page orientation as you stamp.

You can also opt for a monochromatic look. For the large DIY Notepad, I used only Walnut Stain to distress the pages, then stamped some subtle branch designs. This creates a sophisticated, understated elegance.

4. Admire Your Finished Inserts: Once cut and embellished, you’ll see how truly unique and beautifully decorated each individual page becomes. This step truly elevates the humble notepad into something special.

5. Edge Distressing for Cohesion: For an even more cohesive distressed appearance, stack all the inserts for one notepad together. While holding them firmly, gently run your blending tool with distress ink along all the edges of the stack. This creates a uniform, aged border around your entire pad.

6. Prepare for Gluing: Turn your stack of inserts upside down and tap them gently on your table to ensure they are perfectly aligned. Then, use two binder clips – one on each side – to hold them securely in place. At this stage, only the inserts are stacked; the covers will be added later.

7. Apply Glue to the Spine: Return the pages to their normal upright position. Carefully squeeze a consistent line of craft PVA glue along the entire top edge of the notepad. A bottle with a fine tip applicator is ideal for creating a uniform glue line, eliminating the need for additional brushes.

8. Dry and Repeat: Apply glue to all your other notepad stacks following the same steps. You’ll want a somewhat thick, even coat of glue. Allow them to dry undisturbed on your table, checking periodically to ensure no glue drips. The white PVA glue should turn transparent as it dries, indicating that your inserts are ready for assembly.

9. Distress Your Covers: While the glue on your inserts is drying, take this opportunity to distress your covers. Fold each cover precisely in half. A ruler and a bone folder will help you achieve crisp, professional folds, though your fingers will also work. Then, use your distress ink, like Walnut Stain, to gently age all the edges of both the front and back covers. This step ties the entire vintage aesthetic together beautifully.

10. Final Assembly: Once the craft glue on your inserts has completely dried and turned clear, it’s time for the final assembly! You can use a bit more craft glue or, for a cleaner and instant bond, opt for double-sided tape to adhere the very last page of each insert stack to the inside back cover of your folded notepad. This step securely attaches the paper block to its beautiful cover.

And just like that, your absolutely stunning DIY Vintage French Notepads are complete and ready for use! The glued spine ensures that each insert can be easily and cleanly torn off, just like any commercially produced notepad. This professional finish makes them truly satisfying to use.

For those who love to personalize even further, feel free to create your own unique inserts. You can use my printable inserts as a guide for sizing, then experiment with different types of paper: try coffee or tea-stained pages for an aged look, avocado-dyed papers for subtle color, mixed media collages, spray-inked abstract backgrounds, or even repurpose beautiful scrap pieces of paper you might have. The possibilities for customization are endless, allowing each notepad to truly reflect your personal style.

I highly recommend making these notepads in batches. Working on several at once is incredibly satisfying and efficient, allowing you to build up a wonderful stock.
