Meet the Artist: Tejae Floyde from Tejae’s Art

Greetings everyone, it’s Tejae here, from Tejae’s Art! As a dedicated mixed media and polymer clay artist, I’m constantly exploring new ways to transform materials into wearable art. Today marks a truly special occasion for me, as I’m delighted to present my very first Mixed Media Design Team project for The Graphics Fairy. It’s an honor to contribute to a community that has long been a wellspring of inspiration for my work, and I’m eager to share the passion that went into creating these unique pieces.

The Inspiration Unveiled: Vintage Charm from The Graphics Fairy

My creative journey for this project began, as many often do, by immersing myself in the rich archives of The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership site. It’s an absolute treasure trove, brimming with an incredible array of printables, antique images, and historical ephemera that consistently spark new ideas. As I browsed through the countless lovely images, I stumbled upon the exquisite Vintage Roses and Bees collection. Immediately, these timeless illustrations transported me back to warm summer days spent tending to my beloved flower beds, the serene joy of gardening, and the thoughtful act of sending artsy postcards to dear friends.

This particular collection resonated deeply with my personal passions and aesthetic preferences. The intricate details of the roses, the delicate flight of the bees, and the classic postcard layouts provided the perfect foundational inspiration. I envisioned transforming these beautiful two-dimensional images into tangible, wearable art pieces – bracelets that would carry the nostalgic essence of a bygone era. The blend of nature, sentimentality, and vintage charm made this collection an undeniable muse for what would become these captivating mixed media bracelets.

A Closer Look at the Mixed Media Masterpieces

My approach to these vintage mixed media bracelets was to utilize the elegant postcard images as the central focal points, complemented by smaller, intricately detailed elements like miniature roses, buzzing bees, and graceful butterflies. These smaller images were artfully transferred onto polymer clay to create charming, dangling accents that add movement and character to each bracelet. The combination results in truly unique pieces of artisan jewelry that tell a story. Let’s explore each bracelet individually, delving into their distinct features and the artistic choices behind them.

Bracelet One: The Enchanting Bee Mixed Media Bracelet

The first bracelet in this collection, aptly named the Bee Mixed Media Bracelet, radiates a delightful blend of rustic charm and delicate beauty. Its centerpiece is a perfectly proportioned rectangular polymer clay element, adorned with a beautifully transferred vintage postcard image featuring a solitary bee amidst a cluster of soft white flowers. The subtle details of the bee’s wings and the delicate petals are wonderfully preserved through the image transfer technique, making the clay piece look almost like an antique ceramic tile.

To further enhance its allure, a smaller, intricately detailed bee image was also transferred onto polymer clay, carefully shaped, and then securely attached to an elegant metal finding, creating a charming dangle from the side of the main element. This kinetic addition adds a playful touch and captures the essence of a bee in flight. The bracelet is completed with thoughtful embellishments: a sweet metal heart charm, lustrous round copper beads that add a warm glow, a captivating variety of vintage-colored chains that contribute to its antique feel, and an assortment of other intricate metal findings, including a graceful metal flower. Each component works in harmony to create a cohesive and enchanting piece of DIY artisan jewelry, perfect for anyone who appreciates the subtle beauty of nature and vintage aesthetics.

Bracelet Two: The Romantic Rosemary and Butterfly Bracelet

Next in our collection is the Rosemary and Butterfly Bracelet, a piece imbued with romance and a deeply personal touch. For its main focal point, I selected a truly gorgeous rose from the Vintage Roses and Bees collection, set against a serene green background. This imagery was carefully transferred onto polymer clay, which I then meticulously cut into a classic oval shape, creating an elegant central pendant. After assembling the bracelet, I felt it needed something more – an additional layer of intrigue and depth. This led me to incorporate a beautiful metal butterfly, positioned gracefully to enhance the rose. To further enrich the design, I layered a custom-made element behind the large pendant.

This underlying piece of brown polymer clay was impressed with a handwritten text stamp, creating a subtle, antique document effect. This texture was then gently whitewashed with a lighter paint, allowing the text to subtly emerge, followed by delicate touches of green to tie into the rose’s background. The addition of charming heart and key charms is a direct reflection of my “secret passion for gardening,” symbolizing the love and discoveries found within nature. A small, elegant teardrop-shaped charm, featuring another captivating image from the Bee and Roses collection transferred to polymer clay and secured with a metal finding, completes the dangles. The bracelet is beautifully finished with an antiqued double chain, which coordinates perfectly with the vintage aesthetic, making this piece a truly heartfelt tribute to nature and personal expression.

Bracelet Three: The Delicate Tiny Roses Postcard Bracelet

Rounding out this enchanting trio is the Delicate Tiny Roses Postcard Bracelet, a piece that evokes tender memories and the timeless beauty of small details. The central element of this bracelet features a beautiful vintage postcard collage image, adorned with dainty tiny roses and elegant handwritten text. This delicate imagery was precisely transferred onto polymer clay, which was then skillfully cut into a sophisticated marquise shape. This elongated, pointed oval form lends an air of classic elegance and draws the eye to the intricate details of the miniature roses and script.

Adding further interest, a rectangular-shaped image, also transferred to polymer clay, was transformed into a charming rose and butterfly tag, acting as a secondary, yet equally captivating, dangle. The bracelet is further embellished with a tiny metal heart, symbolizing affection and artistry, alongside an eclectic assortment of complementary beads that add subtle texture and sparkle. A variety of vintage chains, carefully selected to echo the antique feel of the postcard imagery, complete the design, providing a luxurious yet handcrafted finish. This bracelet is a celebration of understated beauty and intricate craftsmanship, making it an ideal accessory for those who appreciate handmade jewelry with a story.

Mastering the Craft: Essential Techniques for Mixed Media Bracelets

Creating these exquisite mixed media bracelets involves a blend of artistic vision and specific crafting techniques, particularly centered around the versatile medium of polymer clay and image transfer. My journey with this project began with a crucial preliminary step: preparing the imagery. I utilized photo editing software to carefully shrink down the various postcard, bee, rose, and tag images to their desired sizes for the bracelet elements. This precision ensures that the details remain crisp and legible even in miniature form. Following resizing, a critical step for successful image transfer is to flip or reverse the images. This is because the transfer process will flip the image back to its original orientation when applied to the clay. Once prepared, these images were printed out using my laser printer, which is essential for a clean and effective toner-based transfer onto polymer clay. After the printing, I conditioned a light-colored polymer clay until it was soft, pliable, and ready to receive the images, ensuring a smooth and even surface for the transfer.

Step-by-Step: Image Transfer Magic

The polymer clay image transfer technique is a magical way to incorporate intricate designs onto your clay creations. After printing your reversed images with a laser printer, you gently press the image, print-side down, onto a well-conditioned piece of polymer clay. Using a burnishing tool or even your finger, you firmly rub the back of the paper, transferring the toner to the clay surface. The secret lies in the toner melting slightly onto the clay. Once sufficiently burnished, you carefully peel away the paper, often leaving behind a ghostly, yet perfect, replica of your chosen image on the clay. This technique is incredibly satisfying and opens up a world of design possibilities, allowing you to personalize your DIY jewelry with any image you desire from The Graphics Fairy’s vast collection.

The Versatility of Polymer Clay: A Crafter’s Dream

Polymer clay stands out as an incredibly versatile medium in the world of crafting. Its unique properties allow it to be molded, sculpted, textured, and even made to mimic the appearance of almost any material – from stone and wood to glass and metal. I’ve had the pleasure of “claying” for over a decade now, and my enthusiasm for it has never waned. The endless possibilities it offers mean that every project can be a new exploration, a fresh challenge, and an opportunity to create something truly original. For these mixed media bracelets, polymer clay proved to be the ideal choice for its ability to hold intricate image transfers beautifully, its lightweight durability, and its capacity to be shaped into various forms, from the rectangular and oval focal points to the delicate marquise shapes and tiny dangling charms. It’s a medium that truly empowers artists to bring their most imaginative ideas to life.
