Hi everyone! I’m Rhonda from JOYjunktique, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share this ‘Seamstress Notebook Junk Journal’ as my latest Design Team Project for The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. My vision for this project was to create a functional yet beautiful notebook—a cherished repository for all the inspirations, notes, and ephemera a passionate seamstress might refer to. This journal is a celebration of needlework, textiles, and the timeless elegance of vintage sewing. For this creation, I primarily delved into the rich resources of the Sewing Ephemera kit, the Sewing and Needlework kit, and the delightful Jane Austen Embroidery kit, each providing a treasure trove of perfect imagery.

The journey began with selecting the perfect cover image. I discovered this captivating dressmaker’s mannequin graphic within The Lacemaker kit, and I instantly knew it had to grace the front of my ‘Seamstress Notebook’. To ensure durability and a luxurious feel, I printed this beautiful image onto sturdy cardstock. Further reinforcing its structure, I thoughtfully lined the cover with repurposed Amazon packaging—an eco-friendly touch—and then covered it with soft, tactile muslin fabric. This combination provides a robust yet flexible base, setting the stage for the journal’s vintage aesthetic.

To enhance the antique charm, I meticulously stitched a delicate, very old vintage remnant piece of lace along the edge of the cover, providing a soft, intricate border. The spine of the journal is a true testament to its “well-loved” character. I adorned it with various fabric, lace, and tatting remnants, layering them to create a rich, textured surface that evokes a sense of history and warmth. Functionality was also key: I carefully scored an extension of the cover, allowing it to gracefully wrap around the journal’s signature pages, forming a secure and elegant closure. The closure itself is a delightful assembly—a needle thoughtfully looped through sturdy cotton string, which is secured with charming eyelets and an antique button, tying the journal shut with a touch of old-world utility. Furthermore, I integrated a small, fabric pouch filled with extra ephemera onto the back cover, ingeniously threading a very old piece of measuring tape through its opening, a perfect nod to the seamstress theme.

A truly special element adorning the journal’s exterior is the precious little handmade fabric flower, lovingly crafted by my young granddaughter. This personal touch infuses the notebook with an extra layer of sentiment and generational artistry, making it even more unique and heartfelt.

As you delve into the pages, you’ll discover that I’ve woven old fabric remnants throughout the entire journal, strategically placed to add rich, tactile beauty and captivating texture to every turn. Within the inside front and back covers, I’ve thoughtfully attached vintage crocheted doilies, which not only look exquisite but also serve a practical purpose as charming pockets, perfect for tucking away various pieces of ephemera. The very first page makes a delightful statement: it’s crafted from a beautiful cotton fabric doily remnant and proudly displays a cute, miniature sewing machine charm. Indeed, the journal is sprinkled with several other sewing-themed charms, each meticulously aged to evoke a genuine sense of antiquity, creating tiny treasures scattered among the pages, waiting to be discovered.

To further enhance the visual interest and delicate beauty of the journal, I’ve carefully stitched various lace pieces and trims onto numerous pages. These embellishments not only display the inherent beauty of the lace but also add intricate layers and depth to the compositions. Additionally, I’ve applied some fun, decorative stitches and small bits of lace to the various tags that are designed to tuck neatly into the journal’s pockets and tuck spots, offering delightful surprises. One particular spread holds a special place in my heart, showcasing an old photo that truly comes to life when framed and accented with carefully chosen embellishments, giving it a timeless and cherished appearance.

A textured page within the journal features some delicate stenciling, achieved with paste, adding a subtle, tactile dimension. This page is further adorned with an endearing tag, playfully secured with a rusty safety pin, which adds a wonderful touch of industrial vintage charm. The adjacent “Notes” page is a beautiful print from The Graphics Fairy’s indispensable Sewing Ephemera kit, perfectly complementing the theme and providing a functional space for recording thoughts and ideas.

I continually sought ways to add depth and dimension to each spread. On this particular coffee-dyed page, I created an embossed pocket, lending a sophisticated, raised texture. This pocket holds delightful ladies’ fashion tags, which I adore because they strikingly resemble miniature fabric swatches, perfectly aligning with our seamstress theme. A charming detail is created with some artfully gathered fabric and a cluster of buttons, all held securely with an old, rusty bulb pin, evoking a sense of treasured age. Opposite this, an exquisite lace page, salvaged from an old, hand-stitched embroidery piece, offers a delicate contrast, its intricate patterns speaking volumes of past craftsmanship.

This page is a celebration of repurposed elements. It was ingeniously crafted from a vintage sewing pattern piece, which I carefully folded and manipulated to create an abundance of charming pockets and tuck spots, each overflowing with delightful sewing-themed ephemera. The crisp ticking fabric, sewn onto this page, beautifully highlights adorable heart stitches and a sweet embossed tag, adding layers of texture and sentiment. On the opposing side, a large, antique button is securely sewn onto a fabric page, which itself was lovingly created from a piece of an old tablecloth, weaving a narrative of forgotten household treasures into the journal’s fabric.

Moving through the journal, a beautiful lace belly band gracefully holds a large journaling tag. This tag is thoughtfully accented with a delicate ruffle crafted from old pattern tissue paper, alongside more charming heart stitches and a ticking tab, creating a harmonious blend of textures. The elegant lace doily on this page was achieved using a precision die cut, demonstrating how modern tools can create a vintage aesthetic. Peeking from behind, the next page reveals an intriguing old French fabric receipt, a wonderful find from The Graphics Fairy website, adding an authentic historical touch to the narrative of the seamstress.

Another captivating belly band has been fashioned with an intricately embellished dress form, a quintessential symbol of sewing and fashion. Tucked neatly behind this, you’ll discover a charming tiny envelope. And what treasures does it hold? Inside this miniature enclosure is a folded ribbon card, complete with a collection of pins and a needle, offering a truly delightful and practical surprise for any seamstress or crafter. It’s these small, thoughtful details that truly bring the journal’s theme to life.

The vintage imagery used on this spread creates an undeniably beautiful and evocative scene, perfectly capturing the spirit of a bygone era of sewing. These images pair exquisitely with the subsequent page, which is ingeniously crafted from the authentic instructions of an old sewing pattern. This creative choice adds an unexpected textual element and a genuine connection to the historical roots of needlework and garment creation.

Innovation meets tradition on this compelling page. I’ve sewn a clear acrylic sheet to the back of the old pattern instruction page, ingeniously transforming it into transparent, see-through pockets. These pockets proudly display beautiful embroidery patterns sourced from the elegant Jane Austen Embroidery kit, as well as a charming needlework pattern (printed in classic black and white) from the versatile Sewing and Needlework kit. The entire signature, a collection of these thematic pages, is robustly stitched into the journal using durable brown waxed thread, ensuring both strength and a rustic, artisanal finish.

Here, you can see the captivating other side of that intriguing French fabric receipt, which gracefully opens up to reveal delicate lace pieces neatly pinned inside—a hidden treasure awaiting discovery. Further along, another elegant lace belly band secures a fascinating page from the Tattered Treasures 2 kit. This particular page is designed to convincingly resemble a collection of aged fabric samples, adding yet another layer of textile artistry and historical richness to this truly unique ‘Seamstress Notebook Junk Journal’.

The essence of vintage craftsmanship truly shines on this page, featuring a beautiful old vintage sewing machine image, a perfect inclusion from the Sewing and Needlework kit. In an act of creative repurposing, I transformed the flaps of an envelope, originally found in The Lacemaker kit, into charming small pocket pages. These delightful pockets are perfectly sized to hold delicate lace sample cards and various pieces of ephemera, adding both beauty and utility. To elegantly showcase the lace trims, I utilized the wonderful Ribbon and Lace Holders, which I discovered on The Graphics Fairy website—they are truly indispensable. Behind these elements, a luxurious satin pocket conceals a vibrant, accordion fold-out featuring exquisite Victorian ladies in their beautiful dresses, all from the captivating Jane Austen Embroidery kit, offering a delightful surprise as you explore the journal.

Finally, the inside back cover holds its own set of charming secrets. Here, you’ll find a delightful coin envelope featuring the iconic dress form image, perfectly housing even more precious ephemera, ready for creative use. To add a unique and functional touch, I crafted a clear ruler using a die cut and then meticulously applied gold wax to its surface. This not only highlights the intricate details of the ruler but also adds a touch of elegant shimmer, completing this truly magnificent and inspiring ‘Seamstress Notebook Junk Journal’.
