Meet the Artist: Anna Hollingworth of Leximbue Journals
Hello everyone, I’m Anna Hollingworth from LeximbueJournals. For those unfamiliar with my work, my artistic journey is deeply rooted in history, particularly the Dark Ages, which profoundly influences my themed journals. My passion lies in creating pieces inspired by Dark Age, Medieval, and other historical periods. Beyond the ancient, I also find immense joy in romantic, rustic, vintage, fairytale, and mythical themes, allowing me to explore a broad spectrum of enchanting aesthetics. I am based in the picturesque United Kingdom, residing in a charming village near London, nestled gracefully by the River Thames.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Karen and Emily for inviting me to join their esteemed Design Team for The Graphics Fairy Premium site. A special thank you also goes to Lisa for her incredible support, and to all the other wonderful ladies on the team for their warm and encouraging welcome. It’s a true privilege to be part of such a creative community.
The Vision: Crafting the Urban Structures Junk Journal
For my inaugural project with The Graphics Fairy, I envisioned and meticulously crafted a journal themed “Urban Structures.” This concept was born from a desire to capture the essence of old-world architectural styles, evoking a sense of enduring history and robust design. My aim was to create a piece that felt inherently rustic and beautifully weathered, yet possessed a sturdy, resilient quality – a journal that could withstand the rigors of everyday use while retaining its antique charm. Every element of this book, from its foundational structure to its intricate details, has been lovingly handmade by me, ensuring its unique character and artisanal integrity.
The Exterior: Architectural Elegance and Golden Accents
The visual foundation for the journal’s cover and spine was laid using magnificent images sourced directly from The Graphics Fairy’s Architectural Drawings bundle. These prints, rich in historical detail and intricate lines, perfectly captured the archaic beauty I sought. To further elevate their elegance and emphasize the journal’s aged character, I meticulously added touches of gold. This shimmering accent enhances the subtle ridges of the architectural designs and highlights the artisanal stitching, lending the journal a refined, almost gilded appearance that speaks of forgotten grandeur.
Crafting the Interior: A Symphony of Vintage Imagery and Textures
The selection of images for the journal’s interior was a thoughtful process, ensuring each piece harmonized with the overarching “Urban Structures” theme. I carefully chose prints that not only depicted architectural elements but also contributed to the desired rustic color palette and tonal consistency. This deliberate combination of elements creates a cohesive and immersive experience as one pages through the journal, with each image enhancing the overall narrative and aesthetic.
One of the true marvels of The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership is the effortless access to a treasure trove of images. Downloading the desired prints was incredibly simple, and the flexibility to print them in any size allowed for perfect customization. For this project, I utilized a variety of downloads, adapting each to my specific requirements to achieve the intricate layering and visual interest seen throughout the journal. This adaptability is key to personalized junk journaling, empowering creators to truly make each piece their own.
Materials and Artisanal Touches: The Heart of the Journal
The tactile experience of a junk journal is just as important as its visual appeal. For the ephemera and various pockets within the journal, I opted for a high-quality 100 gsm ivory card stock. This choice provides a subtle, aged foundation that beautifully complements the vintage images. The main journal pages, however, are crafted from a sturdier 120 gsm paper, which I personally hand-dyed using a combination of coffee and tea. This artisanal process imparts a rich, variegated patina, giving each page a unique, aged character that cannot be replicated by manufactured papers. This coffee and tea-dyed paper is exceptionally versatile, making it ideal for a wide range of creative applications, including journaling, collaging, painting, drawing, and various other mixed media techniques. All the exquisite images were printed using an inkjet printer, ensuring their clarity and vibrant hues were perfectly preserved, bringing the architectural details to life.
Beyond the paper and images, the journal is further enriched by extensive hand-sewing. This intricate detailing, with its delicate threads and intentional imperfections, contributes significantly to the journal’s unique, rustic character. The “thread tales,” as I like to call them, add a layer of authenticity and craftsmanship, making each page feel truly handmade and imbued with a story.
