Greetings, everyone! It’s an absolute pleasure to share with you my latest artistic endeavor: a captivating junk journal imbued with the spirit of Delft Blue. This project came to life through the harmonious blending of beautiful digital bundles sourced from the invaluable Graphics Fairy premium membership site. For this particular journal, I was drawn to the classic and elegant theme of Delft Blue, a choice that allowed for a fascinating exploration of cultural aesthetics and historical charm.

For those unfamiliar, Delft Blue is a distinctive style of pottery, renowned for its exquisite blue decorations on a white ceramic background. This traditional art form originated in the 16th century in Delft, a charming city in the Netherlands. It emerged as a more accessible, yet equally sophisticated, alternative to the highly coveted and expensive blue and white Chinese porcelain that was fashionable at the time. Initially, even Delft Blue porcelain remained a luxury, accessible only to the wealthiest echelons of society. Today, only a handful of factories continue to produce authentic Delft Blue ceramics using traditional methods, preserving this cherished heritage.

In my creative vision, I perceived a beautiful synergy between Japanese and Chinese imagery and the iconic Delft Blue aesthetic. The intricate patterns, delicate motifs, and serene compositions found in East Asian art perfectly complement the distinct blue and white palette of Delftware. This harmonious blend inspired me to craft a junk journal that weaves these diverse cultural threads into a cohesive and visually rich narrative. As is often my starting point, I began by constructing the journal’s cover, which sets the tone for the entire piece. I fashioned it from a base of soft white cotton fabric, layered with a charming Japanese-style fabric, and cushioned with a slightly smaller piece of batting fabric in between. These layers were carefully sewn together, creating a durable yet inviting foundation for the journal.

A crucial element of any junk journal is its closure, which not only secures the contents but also adds to its overall charm. For this Delft Blue journal, I opted for a dark blue elastic band, adorned with two halves of an elegant Chinese knot applique. This choice was deliberate: the elastic band provides essential flexibility, allowing the journal to expand gracefully as more treasures, ephemera, and memories are added over time. Inside the cover, on both the front and back, I meticulously stitched two fabric pockets. These practical yet decorative pockets, crafted from a beautiful blue and white floral patterned fabric, offer perfect hideaways for small notes, tags, or cherished keepsakes, seamlessly integrating with the journal’s theme.

The heart of this Delft Blue junk journal lies within its three distinct signatures, each a captivating collection of diverse papers, carefully chosen for their texture, age, and aesthetic appeal. This medley includes pages lovingly tea-dyed to impart a rich, aged patina, alongside genuine vintage and antique Chinese and Japanese papers that whisper tales of bygone eras. I also incorporated sections of patterned wallpapers, providing delightful textural contrasts, and, of course, a variety of beautifully printed papers sourced directly from the extensive Graphics Fairy bundles, adding thematic coherence and charm. This blend of old and new creates a unique tactile and visual experience, inviting the user to explore every turn of the page.

Beyond the pages themselves, each signature is adorned with thoughtful embellishments. Along the binding strings in the middle of each signature, I delicately added small blue and white beads, reminiscent of Delftware, alongside an authentic Chinese coin, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Throughout the journal, pockets crafted from elegant lace trims provide delicate hideaways, while belly bands made from similar laces offer secure spots for holding additional ephemera. Fabric clusters, strategically placed here and there, introduce tactile interest and visual warmth. A personal favorite technique I employ is sewing snippets of fabric onto the edges of various pages. These fabric edges not only enhance the journal’s aesthetic appeal but also serve as perfect anchor points for attaching tiny dangles, beads, or other miniature charms, further personalizing each unique spread.

To further enrich the narrative and visual appeal of this journal, I carefully integrated four evocative photographs. Two of these captivating images were discovered within the vast and freely accessible public domain section of The Graphics Fairy site, easily found by searching terms like “Japan” or “kimono girl images.” These vintage photographs perfectly complement the East Asian undertones of the journal. The remaining two images were sourced from the exclusive bundles available on the Graphics Fairy premium site, offering a perfect blend of unique and high-quality visuals. Each photograph was chosen not only for its aesthetic beauty but also for its ability to add a layer of personal story or historical context to the pages. The complete list of premium bundles used to assemble this entire journal can be found further below on this page, making it easy for you to recreate or draw inspiration from my selections.

Tags are an indispensable component of my junk journals, adding both decorative flair and practical journaling space. For this Delft Blue project, the “Blue and White Chinoiserie” bundle proved to be an absolute treasure trove, offering a selection of exquisite pre-made tags. My process for these was delightfully simple: I merely printed them out and then backed them with either tea-dyed paper for an extra touch of vintage elegance or sturdy kraft paper for added durability. This simple step transforms digital images into tangible, functional elements that are perfect for tucking into pockets or attaching to pages.

Beyond the pre-made options, I also enjoy creating custom pieces. Using a variety of paper scraps, I collaged a larger, unique tag, building layers of texture and pattern. To elevate its appearance and introduce a touch of opulence, I incorporated subtle gold accents in the form of a gleaming gold eyelet and a delicate circular sticker. These metallic touches beautifully complement the blue and white palette, adding a sophisticated glimmer to the rustic charm of the journal.

The “Delft Blue Ephemera” bundle from The Graphics Fairy is another gem, overflowing with fantastic images perfectly suited for creating personalized journaling cards. These digital assets make it incredibly easy to craft beautiful, thematic cards that seamlessly integrate into the journal, providing additional spaces for writing, doodling, or attaching small mementos.

What makes the “Delft Blue Ephemera” bundle even more remarkable is its inclusion of delightful pre-made postage stamps and envelopes. These versatile elements are not just decorative; I creatively repurposed some of the charming postage stamps as functional “tuck spots” within the journal, perfect for securing loose ephemera, small photos, or secret notes. This thoughtful inclusion adds an interactive layer to the journal, encouraging exploration and discovery.

To complete this intricate Delft Blue Junk Journal, I layered in a series of delicate final touches that add depth, personality, and an undeniable charm. Throughout the pages, you’ll discover strategically placed strips of washi tape, introducing subtle patterns and texture. Tiny blue and white cabochons, with their smooth, polished surfaces, are scattered throughout, catching the light and echoing the Delftware theme. A elegant metal bookmark, practical and beautiful, ensures easy navigation through the journal’s many wonders. And for a truly unique and whimsical touch, I hand-stitched a small fabric tea bag, a charming nod to the comforts of home and quiet reflection. These small, deliberate details collectively transform the journal from a collection of papers into a truly personalized work of art, inviting interaction and contemplation.

I am genuinely delighted with the outcome of this journal. The carefully chosen color combination of various blues, softened by gentle creams and warm beiges, creates a cohesive and visually pleasing palette that is both serene and inviting. What I particularly cherish is the dynamic interplay between the vintage and new papers, a blend that offers both a sense of history and contemporary freshness. I sincerely hope that this Delft Blue Junk Journal serves as a rich source of inspiration, encouraging you to gather your supplies, unleash your creativity, and embark on crafting a similar, deeply personal journal of your own.
