Hello everyone! I’m Brandi, and I’m delighted to share my second project for The Graphics Fairy Design Team: the “Red Beauty” Junk Journal. My vision for this journal was deeply rooted in nature, yet with winter approaching, I wanted to steer clear of a “spring” theme. Instead, I focused on a striking and elegant color palette of white, black, and, of course, a rich, vibrant red. This compact journal measures 6 inches by 4 inches, featuring a sturdy 1-inch spine. The cover itself is a soft, tactile creation, fashioned from canvas and adorned with a meticulously collaged array of different fabrics, adding texture and visual depth.

The focal point of the front cover is a captivating image sourced from the Entomologist’s Field Guide Bundle, beautifully complemented by a black and red butterfly image discovered on the site. I printed these images directly onto canvas, then enhanced them with touches of red metallic and white paint, making the details truly pop and adding a subtle shimmer. Further embellishments include a charming clock face and a rich red rose button, from which delicate dangles crafted from black, pearl, and red beads gracefully hang. A simple yet secure Velcro closure completes the cover, ensuring the precious contents remain safe.

Innovative Journaling Techniques: A Single Lay-Flat Signature

For this particular journal, I aimed for a slightly different approach by incorporating only one “signature” using a “lay-flat” journal technique. The intention behind this method is to allow a single page to be utilized as a full, expansive spread, providing ample space for creativity. While the ideal “lay-flat” nature is somewhat altered by the added layers of ephemera and embellishments, the expansive feel of each spread remains. Pictured here is a striking journal page featuring an image from the Take Flight Bundle. I’ve layered black, white, and red acrylic paint onto the page, creating a cohesive backdrop that unifies the elements. To the left, one of my hand-painted flower creations is attached, lending an additional touch of artistic interest and personal flair.

Moving to this beautiful spread, I utilized a page from the Antique Paper Scraps Bundle, digitally enhanced with subtle paint splatters for an aged, textured look. A delicate floral stencil was applied, adding a hint of botanical elegance. To create a functional and decorative element, I used burlap ribbon to form a charming belly band. The focal point of this spread is a meticulously collaged arrangement of several images from various bundles, intertwined with strands of thread and one of my own pressed flowers, creating a rich, multi-layered visual narrative.

Tucked within this belly band are several handmade cards. These cards were crafted from black cardstock, providing a dramatic contrast, and feature printables from the Altoid Tin Background Printable from the Take Flight Bundle and beautiful designs from the Romantic Roses Bundle. To further integrate them into the journal’s color scheme, I artfully covered the background of the rose printables with black and gold acrylic paint, achieving a harmonious and sophisticated cohesion.

On this spread, a vintage ledger page from the Vintage Office Supplies Bundle serves as a beautifully nostalgic background. The left side features a unique tuck spot, ingeniously crafted from vintage rotary slides and adorned with some of my own pressed flowers. Inside, I’ve placed a charming tag from the Poppies and Daisies Bundle, which I stamped and enhanced with faux stitching, adding a delicate, handcrafted touch. This tag is topped with a piece of elegant red lace, and tucked behind it is a double-sided card from the vibrant Red and White Floriculture Bundle, echoing the journal’s primary color theme.

This spread also features a ledger paper, this time from the Blank Paper Ephemera Bundle, providing a subtly textured foundation. On the left, I created a captivating collage using a vintage stamp, a beautifully dyed skeleton leaf for a natural, delicate touch, and some washi tape sourced from the Poppies and Daisies Printables. To achieve a unique, transparent aesthetic, I transferred the image onto packing tape. The right side boasts a pocket fashioned from a cherished paper scrap, a thoughtful gift from one of my scrap swap friends, which perfectly complements the journal’s overarching theme. Nestled within this pocket are another hand-painted flower card and some Altoid Tin Printables from the Woman in Red Bundle, carefully backed with cardstock for added durability and substance.

For this visually rich spread, I used an image from the French Newspaper Ephemera Bundle, which I digitally enhanced with carefully placed splatters to add an artistic, distressed quality. On the left side, I assembled a delicate cluster from more dyed skeleton leaves and a few fabric flowers, creating an organic, layered composition. A small piece from the Parcel Post Bundle was added, introducing an extra touch of red that ties into the journal’s dominant color scheme. Within this spread, I’ve included another exquisite printable from the Red and White Floriculture Bundle, along with a multi-layered cluster creatively fashioned from elements found in the Parcel Post, Junk Journal, and Woman in Red Bundles, showcasing the versatility of these vintage collections.

Here, another captivating tuck spot has been integrated, this one crafted from Washitape Printables and a charming cluster assembled from the Junk Journal and Black and White Flower Shop Bundles. I further embellished this section with a delicate die cut and one of my cherished old tickets, then embossed the flowers to impart a rich, inviting texture. Tucked inside are a specimen slide I meticulously created from my dried flowers, another vintage rotary slide, and an additional printable from the elegant Woman In Red Bundle. This particular page also features the distinctive aesthetic of the French Newspaper Ephemera, and I added a touch of hand-stitching to the right-hand side, providing a subtle, tactile detail.

This striking page showcases a printable from the Red, Green and White Bundle, harmoniously paired with an image from the Blank Paper Ephemera Bundle. Both elements were digitally combined in Procreate, allowing them to print seamlessly as a single, cohesive page. To elegantly tie the pages together and enhance their vintage appeal, I utilized black and white acrylic paint, expertly sponged onto the surface, before adding a flourish of gold splatters. The resulting effect is wonderfully simple yet remarkably effective, creating an ideal canvas for personal journaling and reflection within this beautiful Red Beauty Junk Journal.

On this page, I crafted a digitally collaged masterpiece using an image from the Tattered Paper Treasure Bundle, instantly lending a sense of history and charm. I then superimposed an image from the Wallpaper Samples Bundle on top, creating a subtle, intricate pattern. To achieve a beautifully aged and textured look, I distressed the layers with artful paint splatters. A vibrant rose image from the Romantic Roses Bundle was also incorporated, providing a bold splash of color. My key objective throughout this journal was to ensure that red remained a prominent and striking element, and this digital collage technique proved to be an easy yet incredibly effective way to infuse more of that rich, captivating hue into the design.

For this final spread, I drew inspiration from the detailed illustrations of the Entomologist’s Field Guide, adding dramatic red and black splatters to enhance their visual impact. I deliberately lightened the bottom right corner with a touch of white gesso, creating a subtle highlight. A striking image of a beetle from the same bundle was then printed, stained red, and transferred onto packing tape. This technique provides a unique, translucent element to the page, giving the beetle a delicate, almost ethereal quality as if preserved in time. Thank you so much for joining me on this creative walkthrough!
