Lynne Morgado’s Creative Journey: A Book in a Tin
Hello everyone, it’s Lynne here, and I’m delighted to share my July Design Team project with you. I always find immense inspiration in the works of other artists and fellow junk journal makers, and for quite some time, I’ve harbored a desire to create a “wee little book in a tin.” There’s a certain charm to these miniature treasures, perfectly encapsulated by the saying, “Good things come in small packages.” This particular project allowed me to explore that fascination, resulting in a compact yet incredibly rich and detailed journal.
The theme for this journal truly blossomed from the exquisite Garden Party Bundle available on The Graphics Fairy Premium Membership site. Its collection of vintage-inspired florals, charming ladies, and elegant garden elements provided the ideal foundation. I envisioned a slightly grungy, yet undeniably beautiful, floral-themed junk journal that would perfectly complement the rustic appeal of the tin. The rich imagery and delicate details within the bundle made it the perfect springboard for this project, allowing me to infuse a sense of timeless elegance and natural beauty into every page.
Working in miniature, as I did with this junk journal, presents a fascinating and rewarding challenge. It compels me to push the boundaries of my creative thinking, encouraging a more meticulous approach to every single detail. Each tiny tuck spot, every delicate layering of ephemera, and the placement of every print demands heightened attention. This process isn’t just about reducing scale; it’s about magnifying the impact of small elements and ensuring that even the most minute features contribute to the overall narrative and aesthetic of the journal. It truly forces me to consider every millimeter of space, transforming a compact project into a dense trove of artistic expression.
The Allure of Botanical Prints and Vintage Ephemera
While it’s impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite image type, I must confess that botanical prints consistently rank at the very top of my list. Their timeless beauty and incredible versatility make them indispensable for any junk journal enthusiast. They can be effortlessly transformed into elegant journaling cards, intricate tags, functional pockets, or charming tuck spots – the possibilities are truly endless. I have a particular fondness for those botanical prints that include the flower’s Latin names; they add an extra layer of authenticity and educational charm. You’ll find several of these thoughtfully tucked throughout the pages of this little chunky journal, adding depth and visual interest.
To ensure a rich and diverse color palette within the journal, I meticulously selected botanical prints from several of The Graphics Fairy’s Premium Membership Bundles. These included the vibrant Yellow & Purple Botanicals, the striking Pink, Blue & Red Florals, and the classic 1840’s Floral Pairings Bundles. Each bundle contributed unique imagery, allowing me to create harmonious yet varied compositions on every page. The interplay of these different floral collections results in a visual feast, inviting the viewer to linger over each detail and discover new beauty.
To further enrich the garden theme, I revisited one of my all-time favorite collections: the In the Garden Bundle. The images featuring ancient labyrinths and intricate garden structures from this bundle are truly unique and add a layer of historical elegance to the journal. The journal’s textile wrap-around cover was a joy to create, drawing inspiration from the concept of a snippet roll. I carefully sewed together various bits and pieces of vintage doilies and delicate laces, layering them to form a tactile and visually appealing exterior. The final touch was a beautiful green sari silk ribbon, which serves as a luxurious closure, tying the entire piece together with a delicate bow.
Crafting the Trinket Tin: A Cozy Home for Memories
The trinket tin itself became an integral part of the artistic expression. Inside, I utilized a variety of textiles and trims to craft charming pockets and secure tuck spots, perfect for holding additional ephemera and small treasures. This layered approach not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also enhances the interactive experience of the journal, inviting the owner to explore and discover hidden elements. The textures of the fabrics against the aged metal of the tin create a delightful sensory contrast, contributing to the overall vintage charm.
To seamlessly integrate the tin with the journal’s theme, I carefully lined both the bottom and the inside cover with two of the beautiful 8 x 10 papers sourced directly from the Garden Party Bundle. These papers feature delicate patterns and illustrations that perfectly echo the botanical motifs within the journal, creating a cohesive and polished look. The lining transforms the functional tin into an extension of the journal itself, providing a delightful first impression as one opens the lid to reveal the hidden world within.
No garden party would be complete without its esteemed guests, and so, the four lovely ladies from the Garden Party bundle make their elegant appearance throughout this journal. It was simply impossible to leave any of them out! I printed these captivating illustrations onto delicate parchment paper pages, which not only gives them a lovely translucent quality but also adds another layer of vintage texture to the journal’s diverse collection of papers. Each lady adds a touch of bygone-era charm and narrative potential to the unfolding story within the journal’s pages.
To introduce a touch of springtime vitality, I ventured into the Cherry Blossoms Bundle. Using images from this beautiful collection, I crafted a charming little collage within my word processing software, adding a few buzzing bees to a stunning cherry blossom image. This subtle addition creates a narrative of flourishing life and adds a dynamic element to the otherwise serene garden scenes, reminding us of the intricate ecosystems thriving within nature’s embrace. It’s a small detail that brings a significant amount of charm and character to the page.
Finally, to add delicate architectural detail without overwhelming the miniature scale, I printed several of the intricate laces and frames from the Vintage Paper Lace Bundle. These were then expertly cut and used to create tiny, elegant tuck spots throughout the journal. I found this to be the perfect miniature alternative to using real laces and textiles, allowing for the same visual richness and texture but scaled appropriately for the small format. These delicate paper embellishments add an ethereal quality, enhancing the vintage appeal and providing subtle points of interest on each page.
