The Inspiration Behind Shabby Whiskers: A Crafter’s Love for Felines and Vintage Charm
Hello everyone! Marie from Crafty Landing here, back with another exciting Design Team project for The Graphics Fairy. For this month’s feature, I wanted to explore a theme close to my heart: cats! This passion inspired the whimsical name ‘Shabby Whiskers’ for my latest junk journal. My vision for this journal was to infuse it with a distinct shabby-vintage flair, using a palette of soft pink and brown-toned papers. The heart of this project lies in the exquisite images I sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s beautiful ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle, complemented by an array of other wonderful Graphic Fairy printables. Every single page whispers ‘shabby-ness’ through delicate touches of lace, elegant ribbons, charming embroidered trims, and carefully placed vintage buttons. It’s a true celebration of texture and nostalgia.
To enhance the digital elements, I also incorporated some lovely cat-themed pages from my personal stash, which blended “purrfectly” (yes, I couldn’t resist!) with the digital papers and ephemera found on The Graphics Fairy website. As a devoted cat lover, creating this journal has been an absolute joy. It’s designed with ample journaling space throughout, making it an ideal treasure trove for recording countless feline adventures or any cherished memories.
Crafting the Cover: The First Glimpse of Vintage Elegance
The journey into the ‘Shabby Whiskers’ journal begins with its sturdy hard cover, meticulously crafted from thick cardstock. This robust foundation is beautifully adorned with pieces of authentic vintage lace, which I carefully stitched into place, adding a layer of tactile charm. For the focal point, I selected an irresistibly sweet kitten image for the front, further embellishing it with more delicate lace, intricately crafted paper flowers, and a scattering of unique vintage buttons. The journal is secured with a soft ribbon tie closure, inviting you to gently unwrap its secrets. Inside, the cover reveals a resilient piece of scrapbooking cardstock, chosen for its appealing woodgrain effect, adding an organic touch to the vintage aesthetic.
A Page-by-Page Tour: Unveiling the Shabby Whiskers Treasures
The Elegant Side Tuck Pocket
Our first peek inside reveals a charming full-length side tuck, a perfect example of functional beauty. I crafted this by collaging a strip of paper from one of the ‘British Flower Guide’ printables, layering it with one of the many delightful cat postage stamps from the ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle – a bundle I’ve utilized extensively throughout this journal! A small, delicate cluster of lace and shimmering gold trim completes this charming detail. Tucked neatly inside, you’ll discover one of the beautiful Artsy Postcards, also sourced from the versatile ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle, ready to hold your precious notes or small mementos.
The Charming Double Bellyband
Moving on, this page features one of the exquisite journal pages from the ‘Printemps’ bundle, which I found to be an impeccable color match for the overall theme of this journal. To create a captivating focal point, I fashioned a unique double bellyband using layers of vintage lace and trim. This elegant band securely holds a lovely envelope discovered within the ‘Vintage Album Frames’ bundle. Adorning the front of the envelope is the delightful ‘CAT’ vocabulary card from the ever-popular ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle. This entire spread beautifully illustrates the creative freedom and versatility of mixing and matching images and printables from various bundles available on The Graphics Fairy website. With literally thousands of images to explore, perusing the site is always an inspiring experience!
A Generous Journaling Spread
As I’ve mentioned, providing ample journaling space was a key consideration, and this double spread perfectly exemplifies that. On the left, I’ve chosen a simple yet elegant background from the ‘Blank Papers And Parchment’ bundle, offering a serene canvas for personal reflections. To add visual interest and practical storage, I included a delicate lace pocket paired with a matching green envelope. This envelope was creatively collaged using one of the charming cat postage stamps and beautiful floral cut-outs from the ‘British Flower Guide’ Collage Sheet. The right-hand page features one of my own tea-stained papers, again providing a wonderful backdrop for journaling. Along the edge, a strip of pretty wallpaper from the ‘Beekeeper’s Cottage’ bundle adds a lovely decorative touch. A unique swinging tag, which I assembled by artfully combining two distinct images – a cat and a teacup – completes this page. Both images were easily found using the convenient search bar on The Graphics Fairy website, showcasing the ease of finding perfect elements for your projects.
More Delightful Swinging Tags
It seems I have a particular fondness for swinging tags at the moment, as the right side of this spread features two more! These interactive elements add a playful dimension to the journal, inviting discovery. I took one of my own printed pages, duplicated it, and then carefully cut out the tag images from the spare sheet. These were then attached over their matching images on the journal page using split pins, creating a subtle lift and movement. To add an extra element of delightful surprise, I tucked one of the charming cats from the postage stamp sheet underneath a tag. I absolutely adore how these look – it’s such a clever and enchanting way to discreetly hide a journaling spot, don’t you agree? On the left page, a slim tuck provides another functional detail, utilizing more of that beautiful wallpaper from the ‘Beekeeper’s Cottage’ bundle. Here, I’ve adorned it with a bulb pin, embellished with lovely scraps of fabric and lace. And, of course, I couldn’t resist adding a metal cat charm I found in my stash – it was simply too cute to leave out!
The Flipping Cat Reveal: A Hidden Delight
The left page holds a particularly charming surprise: a cute cut-out image of a vintage cat, sourced from my personal collection, beautifully embellished with delicate paper flowers, tiny leaves, and more vintage buttons. But this isn’t just any cat image – it cleverly flips open to unveil a collection of ephemera held securely in place by a discreet, hidden ‘slot’ within the journal page itself. To achieve this ingenious feature, I carefully used my craft knife to cut around a portion of the image, creating a slot just wide enough to house these precious pieces. Tucked inside are another delightful postage stamp and the adorable catnip envelope, both thoughtfully chosen from the versatile ‘Kitty Cat Ephemera’ bundle. This interactive element adds a wonderful sense of discovery and whimsy to the journal.
The Tactile Beauty of Shabby Whiskers: A Side View
Finally, I wanted to share a side view of the journal. This perspective truly highlights its tactile beauty and the rich layering of materials. With all those delicate laces and charming trims cascading from its edges, the journal invites you to run your fingers across its surface. It’s a symphony of shabby loveliness, subtly hinting at the treasures held within and beckoning us to take a tiny peek inside. I know I would be completely drawn in, and I’m sure you would be too!
