Meet the Artist: Tanja’s Creative Vision Behind the Coffee Dyed Ephemera Journal
Hello everyone, my name is Tanja from madebytanja, and I am delighted to present my third journal here with you. For this particular project, I opted for a distinctive size, featuring a spine that is notably wide, designed to perfectly accommodate the four signatures within. For the cover, I embraced the spirit of repurposing by utilizing old wrapping paper, giving it a beautiful second chance at life. My preferred method for securing signatures is elastic binding, which offers both flexibility and a charming aesthetic, and this is precisely how I’ve attached them in this journal.
To create a captivating focal point, a true “showstopper,” I meticulously arranged several clusters and integrated the word “CREATE,” setting a powerful theme for the journal. A cornerstone of my personal artistic style, and an absolute must-have for this journal, is the extensive use of coffee dyeing. Every single page and accessory throughout the journal has been carefully colored with coffee, imbuing each element with a rich, antique patina and a comforting, rustic feel that is unmistakably “madebytanja.” This signature technique adds depth, character, and a sense of history to every component, truly making this journal one of a kind.
While each of the four signatures individually consists of just a few pages, the true magic unfolds once they are decorated. Each signature transforms into a beautifully robust, thick little piece, bursting with character and charm. This unexpected density is something I particularly adore about the finished journal. The way all the elements – from the coffee-dyed papers to the meticulously placed ephemera and embellishments – harmonize and build upon each other is truly remarkable. I was genuinely amazed at how substantial and full the journal became in its final form, a testament to the power of layering and thoughtful design.
Crafting the Interior: A Journey Through Pages in a Coffee Dyed Ephemera Journal
Designing the very first page of a journal often presents a unique challenge for me. There’s always that question: where to begin? Do you start in the middle, or bravely tackle the very beginning? For this journal, I decided to take a daring leap and commenced my creative journey right in the middle, allowing the process to unfold organically without a predetermined path. This approach felt incredibly freeing, letting the journal dictate its own narrative. To ensure an abundance of intriguing elements, I made sure to incorporate numerous pockets throughout, creating delightful small hiding places for tags, notes, and other cherished ephemera. A significant portion of the journal’s content proudly features leftover and creatively reused materials, embodying the true spirit of junk journaling and sustainable crafting.
Throughout the journal, I intentionally left ample free space, recognizing the importance of allowing room for personal notes, reflections, and future embellishments. This ensures that the journal remains a functional and interactive space for its eventual owner. To add an element of playful curiosity and visual interest, I intermittently created circular openings on pages. These charming cut-outs offer a small, enticing preview of what lies on the subsequent page, inviting the eye to wander and discover the treasures within. This subtle design choice enhances the interactive experience of flipping through the journal, making each turn of the page an anticipation-filled moment.
In maintaining my distinctive artistic “handwriting” throughout this journal, I focused on incorporating elements that truly resonate with my personal preferences. This meant a generous application of various stamps, each adding a touch of vintage charm or intricate detail, alongside an abundance of carefully constructed clusters. These clusters, layered assemblages of small pieces of ephemera, fabric, and paper, provide rich texture and visual interest, drawing the eye and adding depth to each page. By consistently utilizing these techniques, I ensured that the journal reflects a cohesive style, making it uniquely mine and instantly recognizable to those familiar with my work.
I genuinely enjoy making my journal pages feel richly adorned and quite full. Much of the decorative content I create myself, which adds a deeply personal touch to each piece. This involves a delightful process of using stamps to add patterns and imagery, incorporating a variety of charming stickers, and repurposing scraps of paper and fabric. These handmade elements are then thoughtfully applied to pockets, creating delightful little compartments, or directly onto blank pages, transforming them into vibrant canvases. This method allows for endless creativity and ensures that every page holds a unique narrative and visual appeal.
My preference for integrating tags also became a prominent feature in this journal. I strategically installed these versatile elements on various pages, ensuring they weren’t just decorative but also functional. Each tag was then further embellished with an array of charming stickers and carefully crafted clusters, making them mini-artworks in themselves. This approach allows me to create individual tags or clusters as standalone pieces that can be easily inserted, moved, or removed later, offering a dynamic and interactive experience within the journal. This flexibility is key to the evolving nature of junk journaling, allowing for continuous adaptation and personalization.
Washi tape is another beloved medium in my crafting arsenal, frequently employed to add a touch of lightness and playful texture to my creations. Its versatility allows me to introduce different patterns and vibrant highlights to the pages, breaking up solid areas and adding subtle visual interest. When fully opened, this journal truly reveals a treasure trove of meticulous details. It’s filled with delicate lace trims, elegant ribbons, and a myriad of other charming embellishments, each contributing to a rich, layered aesthetic. Every glance offers a new discovery, inviting the viewer to explore the intricate artistry woven into every corner of this unique coffee-dyed ephemera journal.
To further enhance the journal’s functionality and capacity for hidden treasures, I made a conscious effort to incorporate several “belly bands” throughout the pages. These clever horizontal strips provide even more options for discreetly tucking away small letters, cherished notes, or additional pieces of ephemera. They serve as charming little holders, adding another layer of interactive discovery to the journal. The inclusion of belly bands reinforces the idea that this journal is not just a visual delight but also a practical space designed to hold memories and secrets, making each page a delightful surprise waiting to be uncovered.
To bring this coffee-dyed ephemera journal to a beautiful and cohesive close, the entire creation is meticulously tied together with a ribbon that wraps gracefully around its circumference. This final touch not only adds a touch of rustic elegance but also serves a practical purpose by helping the journal maintain its robust and full shape. The ribbon acts as a charming embrace, securing all the intricate details within. Indeed, a true hallmark of this journal is the little surprise awaiting discovery on every single page, a testament to the care and creativity poured into its making. This inherent sense of wonder is precisely what makes this particular journal so exceptionally special and captivating.
