Meet the Artist: Valerie Burton of Little Maine Cottage
Greetings, everyone! I’m Valerie Burton, though most of my loved ones call me Val. “Holding Memories” marks my inaugural journal creation as a proud member of The Graphics Fairy Design Team. My creative sanctuary, Little Maine Cottage Studio, is nestled within my home in the picturesque state of Maine. It’s here that I pour my heart into crafting unique junk journals and other artistic endeavors. I must express how profoundly honored and excited I am to be a part of such an esteemed and inspiring team!
Now, let’s delve into the story behind “Holding Memories.” I chose this evocative title for a deeply personal reason. On the bottom of the front cover, I collaged a small, precious snippet of leftover cloth. Upon it, a poignant phrase reads: “…so good Holding our breath and then is strength.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of a journal – a sacred space where we can gather and preserve our thoughts, cherished memories, aspirations, and anything else that holds significance for us. It’s a vessel for our inner world, a tangible record of moments both big and small, offering strength and reflection.
The “Holding Memories” Journal: Dimensions and Distinctive Cover Art
This exquisite journal is thoughtfully constructed with three signatures, offering approximately 168 page sides for ample journaling and creative expression. Its dimensions are a charming 6 5/8” x 6 5/8” square, complemented by a substantial 1 ¼” spine, providing plenty of room for all the layers and treasures nestled within. The cover itself is a masterclass in mixed media artistry, immediately drawing the eye with its intricate details.
Dominating the front cover is a beautiful lady image, peeking subtly through a delicate mica shard. This captivating image was sourced from The Graphics Fairy’s 4” Square Coaster Collages Printable. To create a unique tactile element, I meticulously transferred this image onto cloth, then carefully stitched it onto a piece of heavy, artfully torn black paper. A thin mica shard, pierced with four small holes, was then used to sandwich the image, secured in place by four elegant bronze brads. This central piece was then carefully adhered to a rich tapestry of vintage fabric remnants that I had previously collaged onto the cover. Further enhancing the vintage aesthetic, an authentic antique stamp and an assortment of tiny labels, crafted from both fabric and paper, were added to complete the intricate design.
For the journal’s closure, I selected one of my most cherished vintage buttons, whose unique character and subtle charm felt absolutely perfect. To complement this, I strung ceramic beads onto a black elastic cord, which was then threaded through bronze eyelets securely placed into the back cover. The final touch for the cover’s robust and classic appeal came from the addition of bronze metal corners, providing both protection and an undeniable touch of elegance.
A Journey Through the Pages: Unfolding Each Memory-Rich Spread
The Inner Cover’s Welcoming Pocket
Opening the journal, the inside of the cover immediately sets a sophisticated tone, lined with contemporary cloth featuring an exquisite antique-style manuscript pattern. This elegant backdrop hosts a cleverly constructed triangular pocket, fashioned from sturdy cardstock and vintage fabric, meticulously stitched together. Within this welcoming pocket, I’ve nestled a large journal tag crafted from a beautiful vintage card, alongside one of my handmade business cards. Two delightful ephemera pieces complete the ensemble: one from the vibrant Wildflower Collage Tickets Printable and the other from the charming Fern Gift Tags Printable. This initial spread not only offers a beautiful aesthetic but also provides functional storage for additional keepsakes and notes.
Butterfly Elegance and Steampunk Aesthetics
Further into the journal, a striking bellyband is created from an off-cut of the Forest Folk Journal Pages Printable. Adorning this band is a magnificent butterfly, meticulously die-cut from black cardstock and backed with commercially printed cloth, giving it a rich, textured depth. On the facing page, I incorporated the CD Sleeve Printable in a beautiful floral pattern. Within this, I glued two pieces of the Steampunk Aesthetic Notepaper together, providing extra journaling space. A charming journal card from the A Rose Is A Rose collection, backed with coffee-stained paper for an authentic aged look, is also tucked here. For the companion page on the right, I utilized the 6×8 Printable Journal Cover Phoenix, adding a delicate vellum window that creates a subtle reveal. Peeking out from this ‘window’ is a tag constructed from one of the Typesetter Bundle collage papers, further embellished with an Ex Libris Printable tag and various tiny collage bits, thoughtfully hidden in a pocket to create an inviting mystery.
Floral Pockets and Vintage Illustrations
On the reverse side of the captivating ‘Phoenix’ page, I’ve incorporated Floral Print #5 from the Attic Paper Stash Bundle. This beautiful print forms the basis for a cleverly constructed pocket, complete with an additional tuck spot designed to hold a special journal card created from a charming vintage book illustration. This arrangement not only adds visual interest but also provides practical spaces for secret notes or mementos, inviting the journal keeper to explore every nook and cranny.
Flip-Out Delights and Guidebook Treasures
Continuing the journey, I crafted an engaging flip-out page using Image #6 from the Delicate Endpapers Bundle. This innovative page integrates a convenient pocket, perfect for holding a special journal card. To further enrich this section, I utilized Image #21 from the Attic Paper Stash Bundle as a tuck spot. This cleverly designed tuck holds a single page sourced from a vintage guidebook, offering a nostalgic glimpse into the past, alongside a charming printable from the Sage Meadows Ticket Journal Tags. Each element is carefully chosen to create a sense of discovery and whimsy.
Blue Daisies and Wildflower Wonders
The next captivating spread features a tranquil blue daisy print from Image #8 of the Spring Endpapers Bundle on the left-hand page, evoking a sense of calm and natural beauty. On the right, a thoughtfully designed pocket page holds a trio of delightful printables: the delicate Fern Gift Tags from the Pressed Wild Ferns Bundle, the vibrant Wildflower Collage Tickets, and another charming Sage Meadows Ticket Journal Tag. This combination creates a rich, layered aesthetic perfect for holding snippets of inspiration or personal reflections.
Elegant Ephemera Flip-Out
On the left-hand side, a charming flip-out page reveals a cleverly integrated side pocket. This elegant feature is constructed from Image #6 in the Pink, Gold & Green Ephemera Bundle, meticulously sewn together with Image #13 of the Beaux Papiers Bundle. The combination of these two beautiful prints creates a harmonious blend of color and texture, offering both visual delight and a practical space for tucking away cherished notes or small mementos. This thoughtful design emphasizes the journal’s blend of aesthetic appeal and functional utility.
Layered Pockets and Steampunk Charm
This dynamic spread showcases intricate layering and functional design. On the left, using various leftover pieces from both Attic Paper Stash Image #5 and Spring Endpapers Image #8 (the delightful blue daisy print), I’ve created a small pocket atop a tuck, along with a perfectly sized journal card to nestle within the tuck spot. An enchanting antique image graces the front of this pocket, which is stitched along three sides to form its structure. The smaller, elegant page in front of this feature is Image #5 from the Beaux Papier Bundle. Transitioning to the right side, you’ll discover a unique journal card nestled within a meticulously crafted vintage postcard pocket. This card was created by machine stitching two identical images from the Steampunk Aesthetic collection back-to-back, then beautifully embellished with carefully chosen vintage cloth remnants and a small, intriguing paper label. This section truly highlights the blend of texture, history, and imaginative design.
Botanical Beauty and Literary Charm
On the left-hand page of this inviting spread, I created a lush, full-size floral page using Image #9 from the Little Women Bundle. To this, I attached a charming cluster I had meticulously assembled, which gracefully holds a piece of serene blue paper, perfect for journaling your thoughts. Adjacent to this, a smaller floral page, lovingly sourced from a vintage plant book, adds an authentic touch of botanical history. The right-hand page complements this natural theme, featuring Image #1 from the Attic Paper Stash Bundle, grounding the spread with its classic vintage appeal. This combination evokes a sense of timeless elegance and a deep appreciation for the natural world.
Bohemian Butterflies and Vintage Textures
This enchanting left page is built upon a foundation of a vintage book page, providing a rich, historical backdrop. Upon this, I collaged a charming leftover bit of the blue daisy print from the Spring Endpapers Bundle, harmoniously paired with a delicate image from the Bohemian Butterflies Printable. To complete this intricate vignette, I added a carefully selected label and a whimsical touch of torn washi tape, enhancing its layered, artisanal feel. On the right side, the page features a captivating print from the Attic Paper Stash Bundle, specifically Image #7, offering a beautiful visual balance to the butterfly collage. This spread is a delightful exploration of texture, pattern, and vintage charm, perfect for inspiring creative thought.
Lace, Daisies, and Rustic Charm
The final glimpse into the “Holding Memories” journal reveals a beautiful spread blending soft textures and inviting prints. On the left, you can see a portion of the serene blue printed page, #5 of the Delicate Endpapers Bundle, to which I’ve added a delicate strip of vintage lace, instantly enhancing its antique allure. The page on the right features a charming daisy print, #6 from the Rustic Tattered Treasures Bundle, exuding a comforting, nostalgic feel. This is further accented by a carefully torn bit of green print, which is Image #3 from the Beaux Papiers Bundle. Together, these elements create a harmonious and visually rich conclusion to the journal’s curated journey, inviting the viewer to linger over each detail.
