Life can get wonderfully chaotic, and sometimes, even the best-laid plans for sharing our latest creative endeavors hit a little snag. If you ever imagine my days are perfectly organized, please, disabuse yourself of that notion immediately! My brain often feels like a browser with a hundred tabs open simultaneously, each vying for attention. But amidst that beautiful mental clutter, a spark of inspiration often emerges, leading to delightful projects like the one I’m thrilled to share with you today.
This particular “tab” that refused to close until it became a reality was the idea for a wonderfully whimsical and functional towel rack for our hallway bathroom makeover. We were looking for something that offered character, charm, and a touch of the unexpected, moving beyond standard bathroom accessories. And what better way to achieve that than by infusing a bit of history and personality into our everyday items?

DIY Antique Door Knob Towel Rack: A Touch of Repurposed Charm for Your Bathroom
The centerpiece of this project revolves around the undeniable charm of antique door knobs. There’s something inherently captivating about their intricate designs and the stories they seem to whisper of bygone eras. While true antique door knobs can be a treasure to find and sometimes costly, this project cleverly utilizes “faux” antique knobs. The beauty is, we don’t need to divulge that secret! It’ll be our little nod to vintage aesthetics, bringing the rustic elegance of yesteryear into a modern home without the hefty price tag.
The Allure of Repurposing: Crafting with Character
It’s no secret to those who follow my creative journey that I am, without a doubt, a repurposing junkie. I firmly believe in the transformative power of overlooked items and the potential hidden within what others might consider “junk.” Nothing pains me more than seeing perfectly good craft supplies or usable materials destined for the landfill. Our garage, a haven of creative possibility, boasts a fabulous wood pile — a veritable goldmine of project leftovers that I’m constantly sifting through, dreaming up their next life.
This philosophy has birthed numerous beloved pieces in our home. From a heartfelt anniversary sign crafted from driftwood to an adorable arrow growth chart, and a handy mail organizer, not to mention that magnificent oversized sheet music art piece, our home is a testament to the beauty of giving materials a second chance. Each piece tells a story, not just of its origin, but of the creative journey it took to become something new and cherished. These projects not only add character but also represent sustainable crafting at its best, proving that beautiful decor doesn’t always have to come from a store.
Project Spotlight: DIY Antique Door Knob Towel Rack
For this particular venture, I turned to a stack of leftover pine boards from our bathroom plank wall project. These pieces, already cut and treated, were just waiting for their next purpose. The idea was to create a rustic, yet refined, base for our antique-inspired door knobs, transforming simple wood scraps into a statement piece. This approach not only saved money but also ensured a cohesive look with the existing bathroom decor, demonstrating how thoughtful planning and repurposing can elevate your home’s aesthetic.

Gathering Your Materials: The Essential Supply List
Supplies We Used: (Affiliate links are provided below noted by asterisks. For more information, see my disclosure policy here.)
- 2 1x6x8 pine boards: These were remnants from a previous project, cut into nine 16-inch lengths. Using leftover wood is not only economical but also adds a unique character to your finished piece. If you’re buying new, choose boards with interesting grain patterns or minor imperfections for that authentic rustic look.
- DIY stain or stain of your choice: We opted for a natural, inexpensive DIY stain, which complements the rustic aesthetic beautifully. Consider a stain that matches or contrasts appealingly with your existing bathroom decor. For a more distressed look, you can apply a lighter stain and then sand it back slightly.
- Marine grade polyurethane*: This is a crucial step, especially for any wooden item destined for a bathroom environment. Marine-grade polyurethane offers superior protection against moisture and humidity, preventing warping and extending the life of your towel rack. Don’t skip this if your bathroom gets steamy!
- 4 antique door knobs: I sourced these wonderful, antique-style knobs from Hobby Lobby (specifically this blue metal keyhole with an acrylic knob, and a complementary one). The key here is to find knobs that speak to your aesthetic – whether true antiques or convincing replicas – and that are designed with a screw or bolt for easy attachment to a flat surface. Look for sales to make this even more budget-friendly.
- Continuous hinge* or thin metal strip with pre-drilled holes: This hinge will connect your individual wood planks, providing structural integrity. While a metal strip might be cheaper, a continuous hinge offers the convenience of pre-drilled holes, saving you time and effort. Measure carefully to ensure it spans the entire length of your assembled planks.
- Hack saw*: Essential for cutting the continuous hinge to the precise length required. A good quality hacksaw will make clean cuts and simplify this step.
- Hangman wall mount*: This mounting system offers a secure and level way to hang your finished towel rack, ensuring it stays firmly in place even with wet towels. Alternatively, D-ring hangers or a French cleat system could also work, depending on your preference and the weight of the rack.
- Screws: Various sizes for attaching the hinge to the wood and the door knobs to the planks. Ensure they are appropriate for wood and not too long to go through the front of your planks.
- Drill/Driver: For pre-drilling holes and driving screws.
- Measuring Tape and Pencil: For accurate measurements and marking.
Step-by-Step Guide: Building Your Unique Towel Rack
The Steps:
One of the many joys of repurposing is the efficiency it often brings. Since our pine boards were already cut, stained, and sealed from their prior life as part of our bathroom plank wall, the initial prep work for this towel rack was virtually nonexistent. This allowed us to dive straight into assembly, making for a truly quick and satisfying DIY project. This kind of head start is precisely why I adore finding new uses for project leftovers!
Preparing Your Wood Boards
Even if your wood boards aren’t pre-cut and treated like mine were, the preparation is straightforward. Start by ensuring your 1x6x8 pine boards are cut into nine 16-inch lengths. If your wood isn’t already stained and sealed, this is the time to do it. Apply your chosen stain according to the product instructions, allowing it to penetrate and dry fully. Once dry, apply a few coats of marine-grade polyurethane, especially if this rack will live in a moisture-prone area like a bathroom. This protective layer will shield the wood from humidity and splashes, ensuring its longevity. Lightly sand between coats for a super smooth finish.
Assembling the Plank Base
With your boards ready, the next step is to create the unified plank base. Lay your nine 16-inch boards face down on a clean, flat surface. Arrange them tightly together, ensuring their edges align perfectly to form a single, continuous panel. This is where the continuous hinge comes into play. Measure the collective length of your assembled boards to determine how long your hinge needs to be. We spent a bit of time searching hardware stores for a thin metal strip, similar to what we used on our wood beam doorway project, but without luck. The continuous hinge, while a slightly different approach, proved to be an excellent alternative, primarily because the holes were already perfectly drilled – a real time-saver!

My wonderful partner, Robert, used a hacksaw to carefully cut the continuous hinge to the precise length we needed. It’s important to make clean, straight cuts here for a professional finish. Once cut, we laid the hinge horizontally across the assembled boards, making sure it spanned across multiple planks to securely connect them. This placement is key to ensuring the entire rack is sturdy and durable.

Next, I used a drill to secure the hinge in place with appropriate wood screws. We made sure to pre-drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting, especially given the rustic nature of our scrap wood. We attached the hinge across the center of the planks first, and then, using the remainder of the cut hinge, we created smaller connecting pieces for the bottom parts of the planks. This double reinforcement ensures that all the individual wood pieces are firmly bound together, creating a robust and stable base for the door knobs.

Attaching the Antique-Style Knobs
The most exciting part of this project for me was adding the antique door knob hooks. I was lucky enough to discover these adorable finds at Hobby Lobby during a 50% off sale! This made them a fantastic bargain at just $6.00 each, especially when you consider the typical cost of authentic antique door knobs. Finding these gems truly elevated the project, proving that a keen eye for a deal can lead to truly unique and budget-friendly decor. When choosing your knobs, ensure they have a flat base or a mechanism that allows them to be securely screwed into a flat wooden surface.

Once you have your chosen knobs, it’s time to position them on your wooden plank base. Carefully decide on the spacing and arrangement that best suits your aesthetic and functional needs. Mark the spots where each knob will be attached. Again, pre-drilling pilot holes is crucial here to prevent the wood from cracking and to ensure a smooth, secure installation of the knob’s mounting screw. We then carefully screwed each knob into place, making sure they were tightly affixed and perfectly aligned. The transformation at this stage is truly satisfying, as the plain wood planks begin to take on their charming, functional form.
Final Installation
With the knobs securely in place, the towel rack was virtually complete. The final step was to hang this beautiful creation on the bathroom wall. We opted for a Hangman wall mount system, known for its ability to provide a secure and level installation for heavier items. This type of mount ensures that the rack will hold up well to the weight of towels and daily use. Installing the mount involves attaching one part to the back of your towel rack and the other to the wall, then simply interlocking them. Always ensure you mount into wall studs or use appropriate drywall anchors for maximum stability. And just like that, our unique, repurposed antique door knob towel rack was finished, ready to add charm and functionality to our hallway bathroom!

Styling Your Bathroom: Embracing Imperfection and Whimsy
One of my favorite aspects of this project is how seamlessly the color palette of the door knobs integrates with our bathroom’s existing decor. The blue/green hues of some of the knobs beautifully complement our wall color, Sherwin Williams Sea Salt, creating a serene and cohesive look. This careful consideration of color not only ties the room together but also enhances the overall aesthetic, making the towel rack feel like an intentional design choice rather than an afterthought. It’s amazing how small details can make such a big impact on a room’s atmosphere.

To prevent the setup from feeling too “matchy-matchy” and to add another layer of visual interest, I intentionally incorporated some bronze-toned knobs alongside the blue/green ones. This subtle variation in finish provides a delightful contrast, adding depth and personality without clashing. It’s a design trick I often employ to create a more curated and lived-in feel, allowing each element to shine while contributing to a harmonious whole. The mix of textures and finishes gives the rack an authentic, eclectic charm that I absolutely adore.

The beauty of repurposing often lies in embracing the imperfections of the materials. The wood scraps we used for this project aren’t perfectly cut, and they bear a few dents and dings – remnants of their previous life. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. These little “flaws” are what give the rack its unique character, its story, and its authentic rustic appeal. In a world that often strives for perfection, there’s a profound beauty in letting our homes reflect our own imperfect, beautiful selves. Embrace the dings, the uneven edges, the signs of a life lived – they add soul and warmth that manufactured perfection can never replicate.

Capturing the true essence of this project in photographs proved to be quite a challenge, primarily because our small, windowless bathroom isn’t the easiest space to shoot. The lighting often doesn’t do justice to the vibrant colors and charming details of the finished piece. So, while these photos offer a glimpse, I assure you, in person, this towel rack is even more adorable and captivating. It truly is a showstopper, adding an unexpected element of decor to a functional space.

More Than Just a Towel Rack: Functionality Meets Flair
This creative towel rack finds its home in our daughter’s bathroom, which also doubles as a guest bathroom on occasion. The beauty of this design is its ability to infuse just the right amount of whimsy and character without becoming overwhelming or overly themed. It strikes a perfect balance, offering a unique touch that guests will surely appreciate, while still maintaining a practical and inviting atmosphere. It’s a sophisticated nod to playful design, proving that functional items can also be fabulous decor statements.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this towel rack also offers enhanced functionality, especially in a household with children. Let’s be honest, kids are often more inclined to toss their towels onto a hook rather than meticulously fold them over a towel bar. While I dream of a world where every towel is neatly hung, the reality is that hooks often provide a more accessible and user-friendly solution for little ones. So, in addition to being a charming piece of decor, it’s also a clever way to encourage good habits (or at least better habits than towels on the floor!).
What are your thoughts on this repurposed project? Do you agree it’s a fantastic way to utilize leftovers and add significant character to a space? For me, it’s more than just a towel rack; it’s the satisfaction of turning a lingering idea into a tangible, beautiful reality. And with this project happily completed and installed, I can finally close that particular tab on the browser screen in my brain. One down, and only 999,999 more to go!
Speaking of other projects, I have a truly exciting transformation that I’ll be unveiling next week! I’m bursting with anticipation and can’t wait to share it with all of you. Stay tuned; I hope you’ll be as thrilled about it as I am!
