Why Print on Junk Mail for Your Junk Journal? The Benefits of Creative Upcycling
Before we delve into the how-to, let’s explore why this technique is a must-try for any junk journal enthusiast. Printing directly onto junk mail offers a myriad of benefits that enhance both your crafting process and your finished journal:
- Unleash Unique Textures: Unlike printing on plain paper, junk mail often comes with inherent textures, faint patterns, and existing print that interact fascinatingly with your chosen graphics. This creates a rich, multi-layered effect that’s impossible to replicate otherwise, adding depth and authenticity to your pages.
- Embrace Eco-Friendliness: At its core, junk journaling is about sustainability. By repurposing junk mail, you’re giving new life to materials that would otherwise end up in recycling or landfill, significantly contributing to a greener, more mindful crafting practice.
- Infuse Personal Character: Printing your selected images, quotes, or designs directly onto a bill envelope or a catalog page transforms it from generic to deeply personal. Every printed piece becomes a custom element, perfectly tailored to your journal’s theme and aesthetic, making each page a true reflection of your creativity.
- Cost-Effective Crafting: You’re utilizing materials you already have readily available, reducing the need to purchase specialty papers. This makes junk journaling an even more accessible and budget-friendly hobby, allowing you to create stunning art without breaking the bank.
- Overcome Creative Blocks: Sometimes, the inherent limitations or unexpected features of the material (like a specific color, a pre-existing design, or a transparent window on an envelope) can spark unexpected creative solutions. These delightful challenges push you to think outside the box and discover new artistic avenues you might not have explored otherwise.
- Create Instant Depth: The existing text or imagery on junk mail provides an immediate background layer for your printed graphics. This foundational layer adds instant depth, texture, and a sense of history to your pages without requiring any extra effort, giving your journal a rich, storied feel.
This method isn’t just about printing; it’s about engaging with your materials in a new and imaginative way, inviting serendipity and making every page a delightful surprise. It encourages experimentation and celebrates the imperfections and unique characteristics of repurposed materials. Now, let’s talk about the visuals!

A Crucial Printer Note: Use Inkjet, Not Laser!
This is a critical point to remember for the success and safety of your project when printing on found papers. All images in this tutorial were printed using an Inkjet Printer. It is imperative that you stick to an inkjet printer for this technique. The heat fusion processing of Laser Printers can cause significant problems with the adhesives, plastics, and clear windows found in many types of junk mail, especially envelopes. The high heat can melt plastics, causing them to warp or stick, release noxious fumes, and even permanently damage your printer’s internal components. Seriously, don’t risk it! Always opt for your trusty inkjet for this creative endeavor; it’s designed to handle a wider variety of paper thicknesses and textures without the extreme heat that laser printers generate.
Essential Supplies for Printing on Junk Mail: Your Crafting Arsenal
Before we embark on our printing adventure, let’s gather the necessary tools and materials. Having everything ready will ensure a smooth, efficient, and enjoyable crafting session. The good news is that most of these items are likely already in your craft stash, or easily obtainable from your local craft store or online retailers:
- Junk Papers from your stash! This is the absolute star of our show! Be adventurous and think creatively – old bills, promotional flyers, magazine pages, user manuals, maps, discarded book pages, and especially those fun windowed envelopes from bills. The greater the variety, the more unique and intriguing textures and backgrounds you’ll introduce to your journal.
- An Inkjet Printer: As emphatically stated, this is non-negotiable for both safety and optimal results when printing on varied paper types and materials commonly found in junk mail. Ensure your ink cartridges are sufficiently filled!
- Plain White Cardstock: Standard 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock (around 65lb or 176gsm) will serve as the sturdy carrier for your thinner or oddly-shaped junk papers. This provides the necessary rigidity for them to be managed by your printer’s feeding mechanism without crumpling or jamming.
- Sturdy Craft Knife: Essential for precisely cutting down oversized junk mail, trimming edges, and for general paper crafting tasks where scissors might not provide the clean, straight lines you need.
- Self-Healing Cutting Mat: A non-negotiable item for protecting your work surface from blade marks and ensuring clean, accurate cuts with your craft knife. Choose one that’s large enough for your typical paper sizes.
- 12 inch Stainless Steel Ruler with Non Slip Cork Base: For achieving perfectly straight, precise cuts and as a safe guide for your craft knife. The non-slip cork base is an added bonus for safety and accuracy, preventing the ruler from shifting during cuts.
- ELMER’S Repositionable Mounting Spray Adhesive: This is a key ingredient for our technique! It allows you to temporarily adhere your junk papers to the cardstock without permanent damage, making removal easy later and preventing residue.
- Grip and Rip Aluminum Tearing Ruler: An optional but highly recommended tool for creating beautifully distressed, deckled edges on your papers. It’s fantastic for adding that authentic vintage, hand-torn look effortlessly.
- Distress Stain: Wild Honey & Distress Stain: Gathered Twigs: (Optional, but highly recommended for vintage aesthetics) These are wonderful for adding a vintage, aged, and slightly grimy look to the edges of your finished prints, enhancing their antique charm and making them look like authentic aged ephemera.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Print on Junk Papers Like a Pro for Your Junk Journal
Now that you have all your supplies meticulously gathered, let’s get into the exciting, hands-on part: transforming your everyday junk mail into beautiful, printable canvases ready to adorn your junk journal! Follow these steps carefully for the best results.
1. Gather and Prepare Your ‘Useless’ Paper Ephemera
The very first step in this creative process is to scour your recycling bin, mail pile, or paper stash for a diverse variety of ‘useless’ but visually interesting paper ephemera. Don’t be shy – think outside the box and embrace the unexpected! I highly recommend grabbing a whole mess of items like:
* Newspapers: The newsprint provides a fantastic, subtle textured background. Look for sections with smaller, less distracting text or faint, interesting images that will subtly show through your prints, adding instant character.
* Catalogs and Magazines: Pages with muted colors, faint existing patterns, or even solid light areas work exceptionally well. Be cautious of overly glossy pages, as inkjet ink may not adhere or dry properly.
* User Manuals: Often printed on thin, slightly off-white paper with technical diagrams or fine print, these can add a unique, vintage industrial or archival feel to your creations.
* Window Envelopes from Bills and Promotions: These are especially fun and offer unique design opportunities! The clear windows create unexpected design elements and can be incorporated into pockets, peek-through features, or layered effects within your journal. Just remember our earlier note about using an inkjet printer for these!
* Old Book Pages: The naturally aged look, faint text, and fragile texture of old book pages provide an instant vintage aesthetic that is hard to beat.
* Maps: Sections of old maps or atlas pages can offer a subtle geographic background, perfect for travel-themed or explorer-inspired journals.
The key here is variety! Different paper types will react differently with the ink and create distinct visual outcomes, adding incredible depth and interest to your junk journal. Choose papers that are relatively flat and free from heavy creases or tears.
2. Trim Oversized Pages to Printer-Friendly Dimensions
Many pieces of junk mail, magazine pages, or old book pages are larger or irregularly shaped compared to standard printer paper (8.5 x 11 inches). To ensure they can be properly mounted and fed through your printer without issues, you’ll need to cut oversized pages down. Aim for dimensions just under 8 1/2 x 11 inches. This slight reduction provides a small margin for error and ensures the junk paper fits completely within the cardstock carrier. Use your sturdy craft knife and stainless steel ruler on your self-healing mat for clean, straight cuts. This meticulous preparation is crucial, as it makes it possible to mount them securely to sheets of cardstock for hassle-free printing. Precision in this step prevents paper jams and ensures a smooth, trouble-free printing experience.
3. Mount Your Junk Papers to Cardstock with Repositionable Adhesive
This is arguably the most critical step to ensure successful printing on flimsy or irregularly shaped papers. Take your cut junk mail pieces and temporarily adhere them to full sheets of plain white cardstock using a good quality Repositionable Spray Mount (like ELMER’S). Lay your cardstock flat on your protected work surface, lightly spray the back of your junk paper (or a very light, even mist on the area of the cardstock where the junk paper will sit), and then carefully place your junk paper onto the cardstock, aligning it nicely within the cardstock borders. The repositionable nature of the spray allows for easy adjustment if needed and, crucially, effortless removal later without tearing your printed piece.
Important Note on Ventilation: Whenever using spray adhesives, it’s absolutely essential to have proper ventilation. Work in a well-aired room, open windows wide, or ideally, step outside for this particular step to avoid inhaling fumes. Safety first, always!
This simple yet ingenious step makes it super easy to ‘feed’ awkward papers through your printer without jamming or causing damage. Furthermore, it protects the interior of your machine from ‘overprinted inks’ if your image extends beyond the edge of your junk paper, keeping your printer clean. It provides the necessary stiffness and stability for your printer’s rollers to grab and feed the paper reliably, ensuring consistent printing.
4. Smooth and Prepare for Printing
Once your junk paper is adhered to the cardstock carrier, gently but firmly smooth the entire surface. Use your hand, a clean brayer, or even a soft cloth to remove any air bubbles, creases, or wrinkles. A perfectly flat surface is crucial for ensuring an even ink application and preventing print distortions, streaks, or blurry areas. This attention to detail will significantly improve the quality and aesthetic appeal of your finished prints, making them look professionally crafted.
5. Configure Your Printer and Print Your Designs
Now, here’s the part where you’ll need to follow the correct procedures for YOUR specific printer model. Every printer is a little different in its interface and settings, so take a moment to look at your printer’s software settings before you hit print.
* Paper Type: Select a setting like “Plain Paper” or “Cardstock” (depending on the thickness of your carrier sheet) to optimize ink delivery and drying time.
* Print Quality: Opt for a “High” or “Best” quality setting. While it uses more ink, it ensures vibrant colors and crisp images, which is what we want for our detailed graphics.
* Orientation: This is key! Determine how to feed the papers through your printer in the correct orientation so that your image prints exactly where you intend it on the junk mail piece. A quick test print on a scrap piece of paper (or even a marked cardstock sheet) can save you frustration and precious ink!
Once your settings are dialed in and your mounted paper is loaded correctly, it’s time to Print Away! Watch as your humble junk mail transforms before your eyes into beautiful ephemera.
6. Double-Sided Printing (Optional but Highly Recommended)
To add even more depth, functionality, and visual interest to your junk journal pages, consider printing on both sides of your junk mail. This is especially effective for envelopes or larger pages that will be folded. After printing one side, carefully peel the paper off of the cardstock carrier sheet. Then, gently mount it again onto a clean spot on the cardstock (or a fresh sheet), this time placing it (‘face down’ relative to your previous print) to add images on the reverse of each page or envelope. This technique is fantastic for creating interactive elements, hidden details, or simply more robust and visually complete journal pages.
Here’s a peek at some wonderfully detailed envelopes that have been beautifully printed on both sides, showcasing the incredible versatility and aesthetic richness achievable with this technique:
7. Post-Printing Care and Drying
Once your creations emerge from the printer, a little post-printing care goes a long way. Depending on your printer model and the specific type of junk mail, you may find that some ink has accumulated on the surface of envelope windows or other non-porous areas. If so, simply and gently wipe away the excess ink with a clean, lint-free cloth or a cotton swab – I often find myself doing this for a crisp finish. After printing, it’s absolutely crucial to allow the prints to dry completely before handling them excessively, bending them, or proceeding to the next steps. This prevents smudging, ensures the ink sets properly, and maintains the integrity of your beautiful graphics. Finally, carefully peel your newly decorated junk mail off of the cardstock carrier sheet. Take your time to avoid tearing the delicate printed papers.
Once the papers are printed and thoroughly dry, you’ll have created this fantastic layered effect, where the original text, subtle patterns, and inherent texture of the junk mail subtly show through your chosen graphics, adding incredible depth, character, and a unique artistic narrative to each piece. It’s a true transformation!
Elevate Your Prints: Distressing and Creative Embellishments for a Vintage Touch
Your printed junk mail is already unique and captivating, but you can take it a step further with some simple distressing and embellishing techniques. These small, thoughtful additions can dramatically enhance the vintage appeal, tactile quality, and overall character of your journal pages, making them truly feel like aged treasures.
Add Some Fun Distressed Edges!
One of my absolute favorite ways to add character and an authentic antique feel to my printed papers is by distressing their edges. This gives them a wonderfully aged, well-loved, and somewhat worn look, as if they’ve been handled and cherished for decades. Here, I’m using one of my most cherished tools for this specific purpose: The Grip & Rip Tearing Ruler. This fantastic aluminum ruler, with its specially designed tearing edges (Mountain and Deckle), allows you to create beautifully jagged, feathered, or deckled edges effortlessly, adding an authentic vintage feel that tearing by hand often can’t achieve consistently or with such ease.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different tearing motions and pressures to get varying results – some gentle, some more rugged. You can also further enhance this aged effect by lightly dabbing distress inks, such as “Wild Honey” or “Gathered Twigs,” around the torn edges. This deepens the aged look, adding warmth, a subtle antique patina, and making the edges truly pop.
The Beauty of Layering: Simple Line Art Over Existing Text
One of the most captivating and unique aspects of printing on junk mail is the inherent layering effect that automatically occurs. I particularly love the aesthetic created by placing simple line art over existing text, like newspaper print or fine catalog text. The striking contrast between the clean, crisp lines of your printed graphic and the busy, often faded background of the repurposed material creates an instant sense of depth and profound visual intrigue. It’s a subtle yet incredibly powerful way to integrate the “junk” aspect into the art itself, making the original background an integral and beautiful part of the new design rather than just a blank canvas. This technique celebrates the history and previous life of the paper.
Creative Layouts: Printing Across Multiple Pieces for Cohesive Designs
Don’t limit yourself to printing on a single piece of junk mail at a time. For an even more unique and expansive effect, try combining multiple smaller pieces onto one cardstock carrier sheet before printing. Here, for example, two envelopes were mounted to cardstock, and then an oversized image was cleverly printed across both at one time. Once separated, these pieces can either form a cohesive, larger image when placed side-by-side in your journal, or they can be used as facing pages that visually connect, adding another layer of artistic narrative and surprising continuity to your journal. This approach encourages thinking big and maximizing your repurposed materials.
Building Your Masterpiece: Integrating Printed Junk Mail into Your Journal
Once you’ve diligently printed, distressed, and lovingly prepared your unique papers, it’s time to move to the incredibly satisfying and deeply personal process of starting to build your Junk Journal! This phase is where all your beautifully printed ephemera, reclaimed from the everyday, comes together, transforming into a cohesive, tactile, and captivating narrative. The variety of methods for assembling junk journals is truly staggering, ranging from simple pamphlet stitches to elaborate Coptic or sewn bindings, allowing for endless creative expression that perfectly matches your personal style and the story you wish to tell.
I personally enjoy gathering a diverse mix of decorative papers, scraps of fabric, delicate laces, and a range of three-dimensional embellishments (like buttons, charms, or dried flowers) to create a rich, tactile, and visually stimulating experience in my journals. The printed junk mail pages become the strong backbone or intriguing focal points, around which you can layer, glue, stitch, and adorn. Think creatively about how the inherent features of your repurposed items can be utilized: how pockets can be effortlessly formed from window envelopes, or how a single printed page can become a dynamic flip-out feature, revealing hidden images, private journaling space, or interactive elements. Every element you add contributes to the unique character and story of your journal.
Let’s look at some inspiring examples of how these printed pieces seamlessly come to life within a completed junk journal, demonstrating the power of this simple technique:
-
This vivid Peacock Collage looks absolutely fantastic printed directly over the subtle texture of newsprint. The underlying text provides an intriguing, slightly faded background that peeks through the vibrant colors and intricate details of the peacock, giving the page an antique, almost ethereal elegance. It’s a perfect blend of modern vibrancy and vintage charm, powerfully proving that humble, discarded materials can yield truly stunning artistic results when given a new purpose.
And here, you can see the same Peacock Collage beautifully bound into the resulting Junk Journal. It integrates seamlessly as a captivating journal page, adding a vibrant focal point that instantly draws the eye and invites closer inspection, becoming a cherished part of the journal’s narrative.
-
This delightful Vintage Circus Collage was ingeniously printed over a large window envelope. The transparent window itself becomes an integral part of the design, offering a playful peek into the page beneath or creating an unexpected frame for a small detail. The whimsical juxtaposition of the lively circus theme with the typically administrative nature of an envelope adds a charmingly unexpected and imaginative twist to the journal page.
Once thoughtfully incorporated, the Circus Envelope easily becomes a delightful pocket within the journal, perfect for tucking away handwritten tags, private journaling cards, or small, cherished mementos. Here it’s nestled charmingly next to an Omni Gel Image Transfer, wonderfully showcasing how beautifully different mixed media techniques can complement and enhance each other to create rich, layered compositions.
-
Even a simple, often overlooked catalog page becomes charmingly nuanced and exquisitely beautiful with the thoughtful addition of these printed images. The existing commercial imagery, product descriptions, or muted background colors of the catalog add a subtle, sophisticated, and unexpectedly artistic background that allows your chosen graphics to truly pop, creating an unexpected yet harmonious synergy between the old and the new.
Once bound into a journal, it creates a lovely, textured page that invites viewers to not just look, but to touch and explore. The layered visuals provide endless details and little surprises to discover, making each turn of the page a unique and engaging experience for the observer.
Truly, the sky’s the limit with this wonderfully transformative technique! You can now confidently and creatively transform almost any ‘useless’ piece of paper – from your everyday junk mail to discarded magazines, old maps, or forgotten book pages – into beautiful, truly personalized ephemera that will infuse your handmade junk journals with unparalleled charm, unique character, and a captivating story. Each printed and repurposed piece becomes a testament to your creativity, your commitment to sustainable crafting, and the boundless possibilities of mixed media art, making your journals not just books, but unique narratives woven with repurposed beauty and artistic ingenuity.
